External monitor won't wake up

I've just installed 10.5.8, and can no longer wake up my external monitor from sleep with the clamshell closed by pressing a key on my external keyboard, meaning that I now have to have the clamshell open (and macbook display active) when I want to use my external screen. I installed 10.5.8 specifically to solve the sleep issue that many users have been experiencing. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks.

Earlier today, I discovered that I could connect a second older 24" Dell Monitor (2405FPW) I've been using for years by using the DisplayPort to DVI adapter I had on my old iMac, and plugging the Dell directly into the second Thunderbolt port on the MBP. All was well, until the displays went to sleep (I have my laptop configured to not sleep for 3 hours, but have the displays sleep after about 15 minutes). When I came back, moving the mouse and typing on the keyboard brought the Thunderbolt Display back to life, but the Dell monitor remained dark. Pressing buttons on the Dell had the message "In Power Save Mode - press key on the keyboard" appear. I tried turning the monitor off, back on, unplugging the DVI cable from the MBP, all sorts of things. It just would not wake up. When going to the System Preferences, the dell WAS recognized. As I plugged and unplugged the DVI cable from the second TB port, the "Arrangement" tab would appear and go away. So, it SEEMED like it was working.
Final solution for me: I selected "Sleep" from the Apple menu to actually put the entire machine to sleep. I then jiggled the mouse, and the machine woke up, along with BOTH monitors!
So, it appears that if just the monitors go to sleep, the "wake" signal is not making it to the Dell. If the ENTIRE MACHINE sleeps, they all wake together.
Hope that helps someone. I couldn't find an answer, so I found it trial-and-error.

Macbook with lion; external monitor won't wake

I have a 2008 unibody aluminum 2.0 ghz MacBook with an Acer s232HL 23" external monitor. Lately I've noticed that the external monitor won't come back to me after I put the computer to sleep. I'm using Lion and a Dynex MiniDisplay Port to DVI adapter. I never used to have this problem with Snow Leopard, but I got Lion right after it came out, and I could swear this problem didn't really start until a week or two ago.
I'm able to get the monitor back, but only after unplugging and replugging it in about 15 times.
Here's what happens:
I wake the computer up from sleep. The laptop monitor comes on. The light on the monitor turns from amber to blue, and it cycles through its ports–DVI, HDMI, and VGA–looking for a signal, before saying "no signal", and going back to sleep.
I unplug the monitor from my laptop.
My laptop screen briefly turns blue as it is reinitializing.
The Acer light goes from amber to blue again, and cycles through its display. If I leave it unplugged, it says "no cable attatched," or something.
I plug it back in.
Laptop monitor briefly goes blue.
Acer light goes back to blue and it cycles through its ports again before saying "no signal."
I repeat this a multitude of times, until the computer and monitor seem to randomly agree to speak to eachother.
Has anyone else experienced this and found a more acceptable solution than mine?

Hi Sworden79, I'm having exactly the same problems with my Macbook Pro 2011...
I didn't notice the problem at the begining, I think it start to happend with one of the Lion updates...
Is really anoying... to make it worst, some times when I restart the computer if the monitor is plug in the computer freeze... I have to disconect the monitor from the computer, then force restart long pressing the power button, wait till Lion load and then connect the monitor back... (experiencing this issue that you are describing then...)
I notice that it reduce the amount of cicles it takes to recognize the monitor if you have display preferences open when you connect the monitor to the mac...
This is SO annoying!

Nec monitors won't wake up

I have two NEC PA272W Spectraview monitors connected to a 2013 6 core, MacPro with dual 500 video cards and 64 gigs of memory. I have tried all the monitor settings to put them to sleep and wake them up. They will go to sleep in several of the auto off settings but won't wake up. If I leave them on all the time the computer will blank the screen, but it still glows indicating it is drawing a lot of power.
Is there anything I can do to get them to sleep/wake like all the other monitors I have had?

I got a reply from NEC Display support. This is a known problem with their monitors and Mavericks. They made the following suggestion which seems to be working:
"Dear Michael,
The Off mode should be set to Standard. I have spoken with a level 2
technician, who gave me some trouble shooting that you may want to try.
1. Disconnect the signal to the monitor, either by turning off the computer or
disconnecting your connection cable.
2. The "NO SIGNAL" message will appear on the screen. Press the RESET and EXIT
buttons simultaneously 9 times when you see this message.
3. You will then have the option to change the DP PLL PMS POWER setting to ON.
4. Also, please ensure that the power save timer in the advanced menu is shut
off.

External screen won't wake up after standby

Just bought a new 15" Macbook a few days but I have a serious problem. Every time I conntect it to my HP x2301 (also brand new) with a minidisplay > DVI cable and the Macbook goes to sleep the monitor won't take up after I wake up the Macbook.
NOTHING works except unplugging the cable of the monitor for a few seconds and then plugging it back in.

Thinkpad T420 with Dock 4338 Dual External Monitors won't work

Hey Everyone,
I recently purchased a T420 with Dock Model 4338 and am trying to connect two external monitors. I want to have my desktop visible on my primary monitor with laptop closed and that desktop extended onto my second external monitors. Both external monitors are Dell 19", one is being ran through the VGA port on the dock and the other is a VGA cord that I put a VGA to DVI-D adapter on to run off of one of the DVI Ports on the dock. I can get my desktop to display on the main external monitor, and everything detects the other monitor fine, but the extended monitor remains black. The screen is on, and recognized as the button light on the monitor is green not yellow and i can scroll my mouse over to that window and i lose the mouse so it's extending just not visible. I have made sure that both monitors work by checking each individually in the VGA port and they are operational, but the DVI-D port doesn't seem to work on my second monitor.
I have done some pretty extensive searching and can't seem to get this to work. At my job I have a T430 with the same dock and dual monitor setup that took no time and works great. Does the T420 just not support this?

DVI-D don't support passive dvi to VGA adapter. You are better off with a displayport to VGA adapter, as they are cheaper then a dvi-d to VGA converter.

Monitor won't wake from sleep since 10.4.8 update

Since upgrading to 10.4.8 my display (Dell 2405FPW) wouldn't wake up from sleep mode (overnight only) and I'd just get a black screen (although it sounded like the CPU was powering up and working fine) ... but after visiting some Apple discussions I've done some troubleshooting ... and today, the Monitor DID finally wake up from sleep ... but the display was a pixelated mess(!?)
To date I have verified and repaired all permissions. I've zapped the PRAM. I've RESET the SMU and the NVRAM and I have deleted the PowerManagement.plist ... but this problem still persists, and it requires a restart to correct (which is maddening) Could it be an extension conflict? The video card? Power Supply? Sounds like a LOT of ibook and iMac folks are experiencing the very same problem.

Interesting, You, like me, have an undetermined sleep problem and a Dell 2405 FPW monitor with a built in USB 2 hub. Temporarily substitute another monitor to see it the problem persists. Also, did your G5 require a new PCI graphics card?
An ATI Radeon 9600 (PC/MAC Pro) PCI graphics card was installed on mine to handle that large screen Dell. Generally the system works again with a hard restart if it can't wake from sleep--try pushing the tower's front power button for more than 8 seconds and repeat this 8 sec restart if sleep persists. Mine sometimes goes to deep sleep even if the Energy Saver panel shows computer sleep "Never". Since the Dell was designed for a PC the Mac's auto detect mechanism for the sleep state of online monitors may be fooled by something in the design of the Dell monitor--only a theory--my Dell 2405 sometimes goes black and on again with mouse movements even though my sleep corner is turned off. I think I'll try a 24 hours with only my second Sony 17 inch monitor plugged into the card.
Is the USB cable from the Dell USB hub still plugged in? Was your G5 originally equiped with USB 2 ports or did you add a PCI USB 2.0 card? The Dell hub is USB 2.0 and it is logical, maybe even critical, to plug your high speed peripherals and the Dell hub in a USB 2 card while retaining original USB 1.1. ports for your wired keyboard (wireless keyboard might also be a problem) and other powerless (or AC plugged) peripherals--cameras etc.
This may also be a PCI card problem as I had a lesser problems with sleep even before I bought the DEll 2405 FPW and had only PCI SCSI and USB 2 cards from Adaptec. I 'll keep looking for solutions. Post if you find any. For further info see:

Monitor won't wake up after sleep mode

Does anyone know how to fix the monitor, so it starts up after sleep mode? When my computer comes out of sleep mode the monitor doesn't always come on. Does anyone else have this problem and do you know the cause? The computer is only a few months old and hadn't had any problems.

Well my solution may not be the most cientific one but it works for me (at least until the real solution comes to the public)...
My computer has the problem that when it goes to sleep mode she never comes back... but it the screen that does not comes back... all the system is workin in behind (its like the brightness level was set on the less power possible) so i had to turn off the computer and had to do for a long time some times i had to wait that the computer cooled off a little and then try again to turn it on... I some tried things that the support page of apple said it could be... but did worked out... i dont know i think is a problem over 2 factors...
1. heating (the screen generates to many heat but, TO MANY!)
2. tiger os the OS "sleep mode" (it knows that the screen its heating a lot and tries to go to sleep to prevent over heating and damage)
So based on this i tried conecting a external monitor to the computer while she was unable to "awake" (or to show some thing in the screen)... and it worked whit no problem at all... so my conclusion was to prevent the over heating (1st factor) and the sleep mode (2nd factor)... so I deactivated the sleep mode setting up the computer to a never sleep mode... and to prevente the over heating well I use a low bright and when i need more brightness (to se the colors of what im doing or some thing like that) I use high brightness... when I away I set the brightness level to no brightness so there is no over heat and no sleep mode (cus if it is deactivated and it over heats it will go to sleep anyway...
Soooooo....
1. deactivate Sleep mode...
2. Activate a Screen saver...
3. And remember to contro your brightness your self... and turn it off when you are not using your computer...

External Monitor won't work

I have a MBP 17" Late 2011 model with the Intel HD 3000 and AMD 6770M grpahics cards. I have read through many of these posts and found the exact same problem that I am having as well. I hook up a monitor through the VGA connection; Windows sees the monitor and even correctly idenifies the model; however no picture on the screen. Also, when monitor is connected is shows the startup windows screen and even the Safe boot screen; but the second it gets into the desktop the screen goes away on the 2nd monitor. I have tried many of the solutions; updating boot camp drivers, updating AMD drivers, etc. and no joy. When updating the AMD drivers, AMD's website detected that the hardware was the 6700 series and windows 64-bit; gave me the drivers to install and when installed the drivers their program ended up saying that the hardware was incompatible and not the right one. Why is this so hard and can anyone tell me what to do, also is it possible to get windows to see the Intel HD 3000 card or is that just not possible.

I have followed your advice and still no go with dual monitor through VGA. However, here is an interesting note. Using the ATI drivers from bootcamp 4.0 disk, the program detects the graphics card as a 6740 and not a 6770M. However, AMD's own website detects it as what Apple stats in their specs, a 6770M and when it give the the drivers to install that, the program won't load it saying it is the incorrect hardware/software match up, but it does the SAME decting with the boot camp drivers and goes a head and installs the drivers for the 6740. I am not sure what to do, so here's a run down again of what I have and what I need to do:
MBP 17" 2.4 GHz Intel i7, 4GB RAM 1333
Bootcamp 4.0
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit edition
Trying to use dual monitors through the VGA adapter, VGA adapter and cable work (works in safe mode, start up, and in OSX). Once in Windows 7 desktop, 2nd monitor goes dark and won't respond. I have gone into safe mode, uninstalled the display drivers, clean registry, reboot into safe mode, then install the bootcamp ATI graphics drivers (no go), rinse, repeat, tried using the drivers that AMD's website detects of the device (no go), rinse repeat went back to the bootcamp ATI drivers just so I can still use the main screen.Has anyone else figured out this problem.

Monitor won't wake up with Mac Mini

I am using a Mac Mini (late 2012; OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2) connected via HDMI to a Samsung Syncmaster S27B350 monitor. When the Mac wakes from sleep, the monitor will wake up for about 5 seconds and then go black. If I unplug the monitor from AC power and then plug it back in and turn it on, it works fine.
I have read several threads but haven't found a solution.
I have the monitor set to PC mode. Any suggestions?

I have a Mac Mini Server 2012 with OS X 10.8.2 and an Belkin HDMI to DVI cable to an AsusMW221u. Whenever the Mac Mini sleeps, either logged in to a user, or still on the log-in page, the display will either show all-white or all-black. If I move my finger on the Magic Pad, a little rectangle, like the size of the Apple Logo, will wipe on the screen leaving non-contiguous rectangles on the display. Behind the rectangles I can see the log-in user circles and the password box. Once logged-in, the screen refreshed and problem disappeared, until next sleep time comes. I think it's the Intel HD Graphics 4000 driver problem. Similar situation happens very often in Windows based notebook and PCs.

I just reinstalled OS 10.4.5 on my Powermac and have the screen saver set to go on after 10 minutes of inactivity. Instead, the monitor (NEC Multisync 95) goes into powersave mode and I can't get it to come back on. I also notice that my optical mouse appears to have gone to sleep also (i.e. the LED doesnt light up when I move it). Any ideas on how to fix this? Thank you very much.

Your system has gone to sleep, not to screen-saver mode. In sleep, the mouse LED is off, so moving it will not wake the system. Clicking the mouse or pressing a key should wake it. Screen saver mode is not useful unless you need a picture, or want to require a password to wake. Using "Display Sleep" in the "Energy Saver " preference puts the monitor in a low power mode.

So it looks to me like both displays are being detected. The geometry looks such that one display is on top of the other, but I can change that using an xorg.conf.d config file (e.g. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mu … xorg.conf). I also tried using arandr.
The real problem is that the display on HDMI3 just isn't "waking up". The power is on, but it just sits there in sleep mode.
Any help would be great. I might just be missing something simple. Thanks.
Edit: I just saw a short list of window managers near the bottom of the Arch Multihead page (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mu … _xorg.conf). I don't see openbox on that list. Does that mean I'm SOL if I want to use openbox with multiple monitors? This page seems to imply that it should work fine with openbox http://magnatecha.com/dual-monitors-wit … nd-xrandr/.

I use XFCE, and when I boot my computer I just run:
xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --auto --output DVI-I-2 --auto --left-of DVI-I-1
I'm assuming if you modify the names appropriately that it'll work too. I have had issues before trying to run dual monitors without taking both outputs off of a single video card (which is what I'm doing now). For example, I had a graphics card with one (VGA) output and a VGA output on my motherboard. But, connecting the graphics card disabled the on-board VGA. So it is possible (I'm not an expert here) that two displays coming off the motherboard may not work for hardware reasons.

The monitor coming out of sleep is depending on it receiving a signal from the device it is connected to. I do not see anything about sleep issues with this monitor in our documentation. Do you happen to have another monitor that you can connect using the same connection and cable to see if the issue persists?

Time capsule drive and external drive won't wake up

I have a time capsule purchased in August (2TB) and a 2 TB WD MyBook external drive plugged into the usb slot on the time capsule. Given my computer is a laptop, it is nice to be able to put the external drive somewhere where it doesn't have to be plugged and unplugged with laptop use. The WD external drive houses my itunes library and is pretty sensitive and loses data whenever not powered down cleanly.
The problem:
Time Capsule drive and WD drive seem to go away and not allow me to access them no matter what I try. The only way to get them responding is to pull the power plug on the time capsule and power back on. This needs to occur each time I want to access either drive. When attempting to connect via finder I get connection failed errors.
I have no connectivity problems with airport. Access to network is fine, so I know the TC is not totally dead, just the part that lets me access the hard drives. It is interesting that time machine appears to be able to access the drive on the tc without problem but I'm not sure how confident I am that this is true just because it is telling me so.
Any suggestions? anyone else seeing this?

I am having this issue as well.
The behavior seems to be that the drives are available after a reboot and for some time afterwards. Then at some indeterminate time, the drives become unavailable. The Time Machine backups stop with a "Backup Delayed" message and I have to go to the Time Capsule and reboot it by removing the power and re-inserting it.
When the drives are unavailable, the wireless router functions are still active since I use this router as my gateway to the internet.

Mac Mini (2014) won't wake up monitors (HDMI)

I just installed my Mac Mini (Late 2014) at home, using two external monitors (1x HDMI and 1x Thunderbolt to HDMI (Adapter). After sending the Mac Mini to sleep and waking it up again, the external monitors will not wake up. Unfortunately I have no idea why. All the settings are still in default and I did not change anything. I already switched the HDMI cables, did a SMC and PRAM reset, but no luck unfortunately.

Leopard won't wake monitor from sleep on Power Mac G4

I had no problems with my Power Mac dual G4 867 while running Tiger, but immediately after a clean install of Leopard (a fresh install - no third party apps) my Dell 17 inch LCD monitor will not wake from sleep.
The monitor comes on just fine when the computer first boots, but if the computer sleeps, and I wake it by hitting a key on the keyboard, the drives spin up and I can hear that it thinks it's working just fine, but the monitor won't wake.
I know that the computer is working fine despite the sleeping monitor because I can hear VoiceOver working after a clean install of Leopard (if I let it sleep after the Welcome movie) while asking for user information.
I reinstalled Tiger, and the problem disappeared. The monitor wakes reliably from sleep with a fresh, clean install of Tiger. But with Leopard, even turning off and on or unplugging the monitor doesn't wake the screen.
I have reset the PRAM, the PMU, and the Open Firmware (the firmware is up to date). I even opened the case and pulled and re-seated the video card. Nothing seems to work, so I have just set the computer to never sleep. Not a great option, given the insane fan volume in the G4 MDD model.

I'm having similar problems with both a new MacBook Pro and a new Mac Mini, both connected via a Gefen DVI switch to a Dell 2005FPW monitor. Putting the MacBook Pro to sleep while in dual monitor mode will crash the machine. Putting the Mac Mini to sleep won't crash it, but the monitor won't wake—the computer wakes, but the monitor stays black. I can use Screen Sharing to connect to the Mac Mini and restart it (the only fix, as far as I can tell).
I suspect this is a software issue, because my old PPC Mac Mini would usually wake from sleep. The Gefen support people say this shouldn't be happening.
Anyone having this problem should probably post it as a bug at Apple's Feedback page. I think reinstalled, resetting PRAM etc. is probably a waste of time. Meanwhile, don't sleep your monitor.
