I am using macbook3.1 - 2007 later version, I got the problemwith its optical drive (DVD reader only). Now it's too expensive to replace theoptical drive. So I would like to buy an external optical drive.  And myquestions are-
1)Can I use an external Blu-ray drive for thesame MacBook? Does it support the current OS/hardware?
2)If it’ssupport, what is the best external optical (DVD/ Blu-ray) drive for themacbook3.1?
Your suggestions are very helpful for me..

  • Please help me find an effective solution for an external optical drive for my Mid 2012 Macbook Pro.

I have replaced my optical drive with a DataDoubler and they both work fine but the new external optical drive enclosure doesn't work with the optical drive I took out of my Mid 2012 Macbook Pro... Well it does work and recognises my optical drive perfectly, it runs fine but it can't handle some disk installations.
I have heard that the apple external superdrive isn't reliable for playing DVD's or lasting either.
Can I have someone with experience with external optical drives to give me professional advice or just other people with solutions.
Below is an image of what I have now for an enclosure.

  • External Optical Drive for Bootcamp

I'm sure this has been asked to death, but I just want to clarify this in laymans terms before I go out and waste my money on something that doesnt work. I'm really not very good with computers to I'm sorry if the answer is obvious.
I have a 2013 iMac which comes with no optical drive and I want to install windows 8. So if I buy an external optical drive I can put the windows 8 disk into that and use bootcamp to install it right? Will any external optical drive work? And windows 8.1 is NOT supported correct? So I have to get a windows 8 software disk.
    Thanks in advance.

    Correct.

  • EXTERNAL OPTICAL DRIVES FOR G5

I have an internal optical drive failure. Would like to purchase an external drive.
    Any suggestions on brand??

Not all firewire drives, even those sold as 'Mac Compatible', will actually boot a Mac. I learnt this to my cost having last year purchased a Western Digital My Book Studio Edition external hard drive (Firewire 800/400, eSata, USB2, formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) and found that it would not boot my G5 iMac when connected by firewire 400.
I contacted Western Digital who replied as follows: "Unfortunately, such model is not bootable and as of now we do not have any models that will perform such function."
So, not only can they not write correct English, they do not even use a chipset good enough to boot a PPC Mac!
Fortunately for me the vendor agreed with me that this rendered the product completely useless and replaced it with a Maxtor.

  • External Optical Drive for MacBook

Sorry if that sounds like a stupid question:
My built-in optical drive on my MacBook Pro does not work.
Can I connect an external drive to my MacBook. I went to a
shop today (in India) but they told me the external drive
for the MacBook Air would not work on a MacBook Pro.
Any ideas? Thing is I bought Final Cut Express but I cannot
install it without a drive now, can I? Does anybody have a
workaround for me? Thanks a lot.

Just a quick note about this thread, I have the same problem but was apprehensive about buying an external CD/DVD drive because most of them don't say they are compatible with Mac OS only Windows. Can I assume this is not true, it would be great if I could buy a decent drive at last and not worry about the large cost of replacing the built in one. Would I have to download any firmware for a new External drive or would it work from the start?
    Cheers Richard

  • What is the best external Optical Drive for my Macbook?

I was wondering if anyone has purchased an external CD/DVD burner for their Macbook?
My internal Super Drive in my Macbook will only play DVDs not CDs. And my discs always get stuck.
I am looking for an external drive that will read and write CDs and DVDs. Something that I can boot my Macbook from if there is a need.
    Thank you

If your MacBook is still under warranty, contact Apple. There's no reason to accept a partially operating Mac. If it isn't under warranty you might still want to contact Apple and relate your problem - you never know, you could get lucky.
Essentially any FW or USB external drive is going to work - head over to NewEgg and search for external DVD burners. The great thing about NewEgg, besides being a pretty decent company to deal with, is the user reviews. They are blunt, honest, and pretty useful. You might also want to check out http://xlr8yourmac.com/ for user information. It is the go to place for upgrades.

  • Best external optical drive for fire wire port on the mac?

    Any one have one? good/bad?
any specific info on the Lacie products?
    Dan

I personally favor OWC at http://www.macales.com/ . They are the only ones to make drives compatible with Apple's software out of the box. LaCie offers booting, but doesn't necessarily support iDVD, or DVD Studio Pro, and a few other apps. http://www.patchburn.de/ adds that compatibility to many other drives, and actually is what OWC packaged with many of their drives (not sure if they still do). http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ is a good drive database to look up this stuff.

  • G5 using Macbook as an external optical drive

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to use a macbook as an external optical drive for a G5 powermac to update the system software?
My optical drive on the G5 no longer spins discs for some reason.
I was thinking it might be possible to use a firewire and mount it as an external drive with the CD inside.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Hi Jaaniekregg, and a warm welcome to the forums!
If your MacBook has Firewire & you have a cable, then boot the MacBook into Target Mode, connect the two via Firewire, boot the G5 with the option key held down & you should be able to select the DVD in the MacBook to boot the G5 from.

  • External optical drive - recommendation

    Hello
Could someone recommend an external optical drive for my Intel iMac? My internal drive is failing.... Thanks in advance!
    Julie

Depending on what options you want, one of these.
The stuff at OWC is generally good quality. Firewire will be faster than USB.

  • Recommend an external optical drive

What is the best external optical drive for a mac book pro?
I don't like the rubbish apple optical drive with no automatic disk ejection.

I went with a Sony but here's a page reviewing a lot of what's available:

For best speeds get one with a Firewire IO (but that limits your choice)

  • Booting from USB-powered External Optical Drive

    Hey all,
I am looking to update my unibody MacBook as follows - I am swapping out my internal SuperDrive to replace it with an OWC Data Doubler bracket & Intel SSD. The Intel SSD will eventually be for the OS and apps and my original HDD will be for media.
It looks like there may be an Intel SSD firmware update I'll need to install and to do so I need to burn the firmware ISO image to a CD-R then boot from it to carry out the update. Since I'll have removed the internal SuperDrive I'll be getting an external optical drive for this and all future CD-related tasks.
So the question is, will I be able to boot from a CD in an external USB-connected optical drive? Will any possible limitation be the MacBook's fault or the external optical drive's fault?
Any other way around this if I can't boot from the external drive? I wanted to go the USB flash-drive route, but the Intel site (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18363&lang=eng) says a CD-R is specifically needed, or do they always say that? I know I've booted the Mac OS X installation disc from a flash drive before...
    Thanks so much.

You should not have a problem booting from an external USB drive (the MacBook Air does this, for example). My recommendation is to buy an external drive from Amazon and try it. They don't have a restocking fee so you can return it if your plan doesn't pan out.
As far as installing the firmware to the intel drive, is it possible to install the SSD in the regular hard drive slot first before replacing the optical drive and running the update that way? (I don't know much about SSDs, sorry). Once the firmware itself is updated, then you could put it in the optical slot like you wanted.

  • Optical Drive for MBP Retina Display

I am trying to find an external optical drive for my new MBP with Retina Display late-2013. I would prefer a Blu-Ray dual-layer slim burner due to its acceptance of large storage media (for backup purposes). I am using Toast 10 Pro as a burning software. It would be a bonus if I could also play DVDs or Blu-rays from it (using XBMC or VLC media players). What would you recommend? Thank you.

  • Can "Refit" Be Used for USB Boot From External Optical Drive?

Since the new Mac Mini 2011 has no optical drive, how would one make a generic USB 2.0 optical drive act as a boot device? I have heard that a utility called "Refit" can alter the boot loading order and device choices in Macs. I suppose it is also possible that the new Mini may already be set up to boot first from USB. I would appreciate any comments. It would be nice to have some kind of optical drive boot option for Windows installation and other possible utilities that need to boot before the OS in order to work. Maybe I will have to take my external optical drive to an Apple store to find out. Hope not. I also suspect that a USB keyboard will be mandatory for "Refit" and the boot drive to be used before Mac OS X is loaded.

    No utility should be needed.
You can hold the Option key down during the boot process to select which drive you wish to use as a boot device.
Also pressing and holding C boots to the optical drive.
There is reportedly a pretty broad number of USB optical drives that people have been able to use as a boot device, as inexpensively as $30. I don't know that there is a specific list though. I would research whichever model you wish to buy with a quick google search or searching that model here in the forum.
Or maybe somebody will have a recommendation which one they have.

  • What is the best and reasonably priced external cd/dvd optical drive for an Imac 21.5 inches from late 2009?

What is the best and reasonably priced external cd/dvd optical drive for an Imac 21.5 inches from late 2009?

A lot of people have a Mac where the superdrive has been taken out to be replaced with a harddisk. Try to find a friend who has done that, give him a beer and take the superdrive, then buy a superdrive container from OWC or another for  afew dollars and put it in there. This slimdrive container has a USB connector. There you go.
