External periph/fans

Hi!
When I connect either my camera or external hdd to the usb port on my pb 12, rev d the fans come on and stay on. Why is this? Is it normal? The second I unplug them the fans calm down. Even if the powerbook isnt reading from the connected drive the fans stay on. Its really annoying. I was thinking about getting the 20 inch cinema display but if the fans are gonna go nuts about it then no I wont. Anyone here have the same issues or know how to solve them?

I got this information with speedfan concerning refresh rate of my memory sticks
DIMM #1 = No nam, DIMM #2 = Corsair
Refresh rate of Dimm 1 is two time that of Dimm 2, isn't it the cause of my problem ???

  • New MBA and external monitor - fan is going full speed

I just got a brand new MBA 13". When I connected via a DVI adapter to my Viewsonic 19" monitor the fan kicked into high gear and hasn't slowed since.
I am using it in dual-screen mode with both screens open, and I even have my MBA on an iLap stand to dissipate heat. The CPU temp is 77C.
Is there anything I can do to reduce the need for the fan to run full blast? Would switching to a VGA connection help? What about a different monitor (this one is 5 years old).
    Thanks in advance!

There's a program in your applications folder called 'Activity Monitor' that you should check out. Sounds like there's a process maxing out your cpu when you plug in the monitor and that tool would show if that's true and what the process might be. You may have to select 'All Processes' at the top by the filter field and sort by cpu activity so the busiest comes to the top.
I have the 11 inch 1.6/4gb plugged in all day into a 24 inch, 1920x1200 lcd over dvi with both displays active at once and a 3x3 grid of spaces active (makes 18 virtual windows with the external plugged in.) and the fan is almost always at it's minimum (2000rpms) with the cpu temp just a little over where it would be at idle and the bottom only slightly warm. By the end of the day I'll have like a dozen term windows open, multiple word documents, excel, outlook, communicator, many many safari tabs/windows going, itunes, active vpn back home, 3 parallels vm's (win7, ubuntu, oracle 10g appliance), twitter, ical, apple mail, etc... and well you get the point, obviously this is a just a lowly netbook designed for light browsing! At this point the memory is maxed out and I'm using about 6GBs of swap space but the air is still silent and fast.

  • Chime, no video, no external video, fan on?

I picked up an iMac G4 1.25 GHz with startup chime, but no video and no video from an external display, and the fan is running. I reset the PMU and tried starting while Ethernetted to other Macs to see if disk would show up, but no-go on either.
I see this problem in several threads, but none that go as far as reporting back if an external display shows up, which mine does not.
Anyway, it seems logical to me that without video from either source, my video board is fried? Does it sound like I have a doorstop or is there anything else I could try?

But would any of those ideas you suggested (with the display, CCFL or inverter) cause the loss of an external display?
You're right about that. I forgot you mentioned trying the external video port. I think the external video would work if the problem was isolated to LCD sub-system.
Second, would a bad video controller cause it to not boot all the way up, even in target disk mode?
My theory is that the problem (wherever it is specifically) is causing the iMac to not pass its power-on self test. So it chimes, runs the diagnostic test, something does not pass, so it does not go any further. It is likely that the cause is on the logic board somewhere. If you had the original discs, there should be a hardware test app on it, but you probably did not get the discs with it.
Is there any way to bypass or graft another video controller and use it as a headless Mac?
If the iMac is not passing the power-on test, it does not necessarily mean that the cause is video related. The startup sequence could be stopping before the point where the video would come on. It could be the CPU or something else. If you have it open, you may want to remove the upper RAM module, in case that is the bad part. You can also try removing the PRAM battery; if you have a voltmeter, test it for 3.3 to 3.7 volts. It looks like this one
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAA36VPRAM/
I've read reports that a weak or dead PRAM battery can cause odd startup issues. You can also try it with the PRAM battery removed, to see if there is any difference.
I don't know of any way to bypass the video on that iMac model.

  • HT4543 Does anyone know a good external CPU fan for macbook pros?

Whenever I attempt to play games on my macbook pro, mid 2012 edition, it heats up to an extreme temperature in the top-left hand corner of my computer. I recognize this isn't safe for the computer. Do you guys know a good mac cpu fan, if that is indeed the heated piece of the computer, that I can plug into my mac via USB port or something of that nature?

It's good that you're looking into something to cool down your MBP. Unfortunately, even good fans will only moderately - maybe 5•F at best.
    Also, download this free software:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/articles/keep-you-and-your-macbook-pro-cool
And use your machine so that the temperature is never above 160•F at any time.

  • Did Apple mess up my logic board? (Fan always 4000 rpm!)

So I just had my logic board replaced because I was having sleep/wake problems and I think that problem has resolved, but now I have noticed a new problem. My fan seems to jump directly to 4000 rpm during start up and sits there always despite low activity. I have installed smcFanControl and it is reporting a CPU temp of 39-40 ˚C, so this can't be a normal fan setting at that temperature. I am sure Apple could have messed something up installing my logic board but I was wondering if there was anything else to try to fix this problem before giving them a call. I hate sending this thing in because I really need it for class. Anyway, I have tried an SMC reset and that did not do anything. I will try booting from an external HD to see if that resolves problem (I'm sure it won't). Anyone have advise on what to do? Thanks!

Apparently smcFC was the culprit. I noticed it had a crash log in my console and when I booted from my external my fan was fine. Uninstalled smcFC and the problem has resolved.

  • Multiple-point Hardware And Software Failures in Two, Separate and Not-connected Computers At The Same Time...

A few days ago, I was working on a restoration of a 100-years-or-so-old Calculus book on one of my Linux based computers, while my other computer with the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system was serving as Broadcast TV receiver with its USB HDTV tuner
in the afternoon.  The weather in Los Angeles was summer-like in November, with clear skies and 90 degree Fahrenheit temperatures.  All of a sudden, my Linux based computer halted in the middle of the processing it had performed hundreds of times
before in hotter days.  It would not restart.  The entire boot block of the disk seemed to have been garbled.  This did not seem even feasible at all, so I decided to shut its power off for a while.   It came back up after a while,
and everything looked normal.  Then, it did the same thing again.  I decided to open its cover and check on its multiple fans as there was nothing else that could go wrong.
I then noticed that the computer with the Microsoft Windows Vista Operating system which had been receiving the broadcast TV, was displaying a freshly-booted log-in screen.  It had "Blue-screened" while I was working on the other computer
across the large room.  This again did not seem any feasible as there had been utterly no connection between these two computers.  Even the AC power line circuit was different.  Furthermore, this computer had the most extensive air-cooling system
I had built to have it work through 107 degree Fahrenheit temperatures indoors.  Anyway, I logged back in and started the broadcast TV reception again.  Sure enough, after a while it "blue-screened" one more time...
I went back to the Linux-based computer and found all of its fans operating, but with somewhat hotter disk drives.  The problem was that in hotter days, the same computer had cooler disk drives with nothing different.  I concluded that somehow
the 80 mm fan mounted in the front side of the case, with its side with rotating blades clamped on the perforated part of the steel case serving as the fan grill, was starting up fine.   But, as the time passed the spring-loaded rotating hub was slowly
drawn toward the perforated steel case by two means: The partial vacuum formed by the suction generated by the blades of the fan, and by the magnetic attraction of the rotating hub with electro-magnets in it to the partially magnetized, perforated steel casing.
The first effect was always there, so it was not the real cause, but once something else came along, it really helped the latter.  The hub was slowly drawn to the perforated steel casing due to magnetic attraction, with the holes in the casing
inducing a huge air-drag on the hub blades as there was no by-pass around to supply the extra-air needed to reduce the partial vacuum.  In addition, the rotating hub with the electro-magnets now was very close to the conducting metal surface and the induced
eddy-currents in the metal by the moving electro-magnets had added even more drag on the rotating hub, causing it to come nearly to a halt.  The disk drive electronics was heating up and was causing DMA access faults which in turn caused the Linux kernel
    to panic and halt.
Well, this was nearly unbelievable, but true...  I had not brought any magnets into the room and I still do not know how the computer case got magnetized.  It has been working at the same location for years.  The solution was to move the fan
away from the perforated steel casing a little so that some air could come in through the gaps on the sides of the fan (hence supplying a by-pass), reducing the partial vacuum in front of the fan.  This kept the rotating hub far enough away to prevent
the massive induced eddy-current drag from slowing the fan down to a halt.  The computer now works perfectly with the very same fan as it has had been doing for years.
The real solution is to saw the perforated part of the steel casing in front of the fan away, and to replace it with a better fan grill.  The best fan grill material  I have found is the finely perforated, thin, black aluminum sheet that is usually
used as a car audio speaker grill.  In fact, I use these in my Microsoft Windows Vista based computer.  The fans are quieter, with more air flow.  It also keeps dust away and you can brush the collected dust off easily.
The next problem was the halting of  the computer with the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system with a blue-screen.  The fans in it could not be the cause of this, as it had already had the best improvements I could put in it,  with even
externally powered fans that did not load  the computer power supply.  And, all of the fans were working well.  In the meantime, the Microsoft November 2014 updates for the Microsoft Windows Vista came out, and as usual I told the computer to
load and to implement them.  Sure enough, the computer again "blue-screened" in the middle of the update procedure.
That was somewhat too much, but there was nothing else I could do other than to debug it.  I had not changed anything in the computer and its power supply, completely internally updated by myself a few years ago, was working perfectly.  Whatever
was causing it was not in the hardware.  It was not in the November 2014 software updates either as it "blue-screened" before those were announced.  I brought the computer back up after several disk and other software checks and after the
completion of the updates,  I gingerly turned the network modem on.  I then sent the reports on the six failures (three "blue-screen" type failures and three "Anti-malware Executable" failures) to Microsoft with all of details
requested using the Microsoft Windows Vista problem reporting system.  Within minutes, the Microsoft came up with a diagnosis that the USB driver code in the system had a serious bug.  I had not changed this code in years.  It suggested that
I should use the "Microsoft Fix-It" for this problem and it pointed to a link to download it.  I did download it.  It ran and the "blue-screen" problem just went away, as if it had never been there...

I ordered the capacitors on Friday and they arrived on Monday, November 17, 2014.  I removed the motherboard from the machine, by removing all PCI and AGP boards, drive and fan connectors and the computer power supply first.  The motherboard then
simply unbolted from the case and came out with the CPU fan assembly still attached.
I wrapped the solder side of the motherboard with aluminum foil and set up a work place with the aluminum foil under the motherboard and myself electrically well grounded.  Here came another surprise:  There were four more capacitors of the same
kind just behind the CPU fan assembly and their tops were also deformed with one of them leaking the electrolyte inside from the the top.  Luckily, I had ordered more than two capacitors to get the quantity discount and the lower rate of shipping.
I do use them in other circuits I occasionally build.
Technically, the only thing one needed to do was to unsolder the six old capacitors from the motherboard and to solder six new ones in in their place with the correct polarities.  However, due to fact that the capacitors span the 3.3 V power plane and
the ground plane in the multi-layer motherboard, it is nearly impossible to unsolder these capacitors using regular, fine-tip soldering irons.  The thick copper of the power and the ground planes carry the soldering iron heat away very fast, preventing
the solder from melting quickly.  Continuous application of heat at this point will simply burn the internal insulating epoxy layers and cause shorts inside the motherboard which are impossible to fix in any reasonable amount of time.
The only reasonable way to remove these capacitors was to dismantle the capacitors from the top leaving their already soldered leads in place.  The new capacitors were then tack soldered to these stubs using lead-free, hard solder.  However, the
CPU fan assembly and the CPU itself had to be removed from the board to be able to work on these capacitors.
To dismantle the capacitors from the top, I first drilled small holes at the tops of the capacitors at the intersections of the indentations using the tip of a hobbyist's knife.   I then used needle nosed pliers to peel back the triangular sections
of aluminum from the center at the tops to their bases at the top edges of the capacitors.  Next, I  removed the plastic layers covering the outside of the capacitors by scoring the plastic layers first from the bottom to the top using the tip of
the hobbyist's knife and peeling the plastic layers off starting at the cut.  The following step was to cut the aluminum cans of the capacitors from the top to the bottom using the hobbyist's knife like a can opener.  One could not use a saw like
tool here to accomplish the feat as the saws generated very fine metal chips which were very hard to remove and were certain to cause shorts in the densely populated mother board.  The cans were then peeled off the rest of the capacitors starting from
the top at the cuts using needle nose pliers, revealing the spiral-wound metal-paper layers of the capacitors.
The wound layers of the capacitors were peeled off layer by layer by cutting into the layers from the top to the bottom, leaving only the two aluminum electrodes which were crimped and soldered to the leads of the capacitors.  The picture below shows
the six capacitors with one of them dismantled (left) and with all of them dismantled (right):
The  black disks below the aluminum electrodes are the rubber plugs covering the bottoms of the capacitors.  The rubber plugs were then cut in half using the hobbyist's knife and removed using the needle nose pliers.  It was not possible to
solder to the aluminum electrodes, so these were trimmed at the point they were crimped on the leads of the capacitors, leaving only the stubs of the capacitors' leads soldered to the motherboard.
The new capacitors with suitably trimmed leads were then soldered to these stubs with the correct polarities using lead-free, hard solder.  The capacitors were lightly bonded together using a flexible glue to prevent them from moving.  The picture
below shows the new capacitors as installed into the motherboard:
I then assembled everything back together and turned the computer on.  The BIOS complained on the boot screen that the CPU was out of its socket and it needed to be reset.  I set BIOS parameters correctly to their original values.  The computer
came up and worked without any problems.  I typed this message on  my newly repaired computer running the  Microsoft  Windows Vista operating system.
By the way, the manufacturing date on the motherboard is 09/12/2002 and the CPU is a Socket-478, 2.4 GHz, Intel Pentium-4.

  • Airport Card on the blink

Hi - I have three 14" ibooks on the same airmac network. One of them, an iBook 900mhz, keeps dropping the airmac connection due to: 'unable to find airport card' error. If the computer is then turned off for sometime then it is then able to reconnect to the network, say for about 30 minutes before the connection is again dropped, and so on. The ibook is fitted with 2 extra fans for cooling and the room is about 26C. This has occurred with OS 10.3.9 and also 10.4.2. The airport card is fixed perfectly.
    Any comments of ideas welcome.
I thought the airport card may be no longer any good? Also, I tried to see the other two posts on where to by aircards of Mac (not extreme) but the 3 companies listed are for domestic US only - I need international; if anyone knows a supplier who will ship overseas that into. would be helpful.
    Thanks
    Steven, in Japan

The airport card in the iBook is still switching off without warning after some 30~40 minutes of use. If the computer is turned off for say 30 minutes then the airport card joins the net work without any problems. Two other similar iBooks on the same network have no issues.
At first I thought the problems was due to overheating in that particular iBook so I have now installed a two external cooling fan system. WHile the computer is running much cooler the Airport card is still switching off without warning intermittently.
Is there any way to test this Airport card - or does it need replacing. I have found one source of replacement cards, but I am unsure this situation will improve if the airport card is changed.

  • How hot does a CPU get before its overheating?

    Macbook Pro 15" (Early 2011)
    Mac OS X: 10.7.2
Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
I've had my macbook early 2011 for a few months now, I have noticed some high temp on the CPU, GPU and the fans dont seem to cool it down by much. Its gotten to the point where i have a external dual-fan for it. As i type this all i have open is Safari, Skype, FileVault2 and LittleSnitch and my Temps are as below
**These are with the external fan
    CPU 43C
    CPU Heatsink 33C
    Enclosure Bases (1,2,3) 29C
    GPU 36C
    GPU Diode 36C
    Heatsink 35C
    Internal Fan Speeds
    Right: 3600 RPM
    Left: 3608 RPM
Not sure if this is good or not I looked up the regular cpu temps and it said it should be running from 10-35C. Sometimes when i have Youtube and other applications running it can get to 50C+ with the fan. If I play Steam games on it i can hit 72C on low graphic settings. With Minecraft and everything else closed it hits 45-65C (Also I have found java doesnt run well in Lion, any suggestions for making Java faster too?) Also I rendered/exported a short video (about 1-2min) and it heated up to around 65C in seconds. For what i run i expect high CPU temps but if i do a full shutdown and boot it up the next morning and only use safari, i dont see any reason why it gets up to 45C instantly when the apple site says 10-35C on regular usage.

It varies with the version of the MBP, but it's generally accepted that the computer will do a safety shutdown if the temps approach 100C. Therefore the failure temp must be something above 100C.

  • MEGA Mods by Bluefront

These cooling/quieting mods were applied to a MEGA 651....but could be used on the other models. Since Dr Stu made this thread a sticky, I thought I'D add a disclaimer here. I've been modding things/computers for a long time. So stuff I find easy, may not be so for you. I suggest you run this computer stock for a few days at least.....before you do anything that may void your warrenty. Most problems will show up right away. Things I do to computers are designed to make them run cooler, quieter, and cleaner.....maybe making them last longer. I hate small fans....and avoid them at all costs. If you have any questions about any of my MEGA mods (I've done four MEGAS so far), feel free to ask.
I'm finishing up my second MEGA 651....with extensive modification to promote cooling, and quieting, along with a little bling.
    Partial list of major mods....
Changed 80mm PSU fan to an external 92mm fan.
Changed stock heatsink to an all-copper Manhattan heatsink/fan # 701792.
Developed a sideways mounted HD mount that can use a laptop drive, or a std 3.5" drive.
Added ducting for the CPU that allows the new PSU fan to suck all it's air through the copper heatsink, promoting passive CPU cooling.
Added an AIW 9200, a full-sized AGP card, which runs cool because of the added airflow from the 92mm PSU fan.
Added LCD temperature readouts to the front of the case, replacing the card readers.
Added an internal air filtration system, using electro-static filtration material.
Running a P4-2.4 with 512mb ram, this system runs very cool, and very quiet. Only at high CPU usage does the 70mm Evercool fan get loud enough to be heard.....Still got a few things to finish, but this is mostly complete.
    MEGA 651 #2

I made a few tests today to try to figure out the CPU fan speed in relation to the CPU temp, using the on-board fan controller. Since I have been unable to get rpm readings, I can give CPU fan voltages at different temps. These voltage steps should be the same, whatever fan or CPU you are using. I'm using Speedfan to measure the temps and a digital volt-meter to check the voltage.
With the PC off there is .5v at the CPU fan.
At the PC startup the CPU fan gets 10.5V for about 2 seconds.....then drops back to .5V (fan is stopped).
When the CPU temp reaches 45C the fan gets 4.3V and starts.
When the CPU temp reaches 53C the fan gets 5.6V.
When the CPU temp reaches 61C the fan gets 8.1V.
That is fan speed #3 and as hot as I can get using CPUBurn.
I can force the fan to maximum voltage using Speedfan, and the maxium voltage at that point is 10.5V. Apparently there is a fan speed #4.....but I never got to that temp/speed.
As the temps drop 4C below each fan step temp, the fan voltage drops back to the next lowest step. For instance....if the fan is running at 5.6V @53C, when the temp drops to 49C, the voltage drops to 4.3V. If the fan is running at 4.3V @45C, when the temp drops to about 41C, the fan will turn off.
These tests were run at an ambient temp of 27C. Both my MEGAS run their fans about the same....with the fan speeds increasing at the same temps.
What this means in practical sense, if you can keep your CPU temps about 41C.....the fan will be off. This appears to be completely normal behavior for the MEGA fan control system.
I also made some temp readings at different levels of CPU usage.....using the SiSoft Sandra CPU burn-in program.
At 30% CPU usage my system runs about 48C.
    At 50% ..... 52C.
    At 75%...... 56C.
    At 100%..... 59C.
I suppose you could use the same program, at the same ambient of 27C.....to check your own temps against mine. Using that Sandra burn program, my fan speed stayed on step #2 (5.6V) even at 100%. I am very pleased with this result. It makes for a quiet computer.

Papers to 3 industrial facilities inside China's expenditure to be able to update the commercial composition regarding Japan organizations because the standpoint from the resistant: Lately, okazaki, japan producer regarding air-driven factors analysis as well as growth service inside Beijing, SMC Company, is actually launching several item is not going to exchange in between equipment robot tools; making of commercial bearings along with other detail devices as well as factors Seiko NSK place inside Shanghai in addition intends to expose involving the indication factors within the assemblage collection automatic robot tools; in addition create gas engine inside The japanese Nabtesco business which taking into consideration purchase a completed portray to the automatic tools. Before this particular, within the 3 work spaces within the manufacturer had been operational from the individual.
KatsushiSaito until this programmed course of action to market several aspects: Very first, China's job expenses increase. Even though the provincial minimal salary arranged from the global financial trouble a year ago, certainly not altered, nevertheless in 2010 may be elevated. Month to month minimal salary inside Guangzhou is predicted to elevate concerning 20% inside; Shanghai is actually 15%; whilst other places tend to be way up 10% charge to be able to 20%. A lot of producers are able to afford to cover short-run increases, while sales agents expenses approximately 5% to be able to 10%. Nevertheless, job expenses will continue to increase, increase which mean starting to take into account automatic is actually validated.
At the same time, regardless of consistently growing income, several industrial facilities nonetheless confront effort absence. Caused from the Federal government, the particular national parts of Cina Developed Improvement to produce a lot more work have to minimize seaside salary migrant personnel, and a lot industrial facilities are situated inside seaside locations. Employees inside seaside locations can also increase the price tag on existing boost this particular craze.
2nd, monetary progress is generating the introduction of capital-intensive from the making industry. For instance, the current manufacture of auto as well as power devices improved drastically, along with developing monetary restoration, the particular National stimulation actions may also be key elements. Last year Cina vehicle revenue greater than Thirteen.6 000 0000, producing Cina our planet's best-selling vehicle industry. Automobile control remains to be minimal from the national locations assist revenue progress, right after This year China's car or truck manufacturing continue to cultivate. The actual channel time period, China's yearly vehicle productivity might achieve Twenty zillion is practically two times the particular productivity inside The japanese. Creation as well as profits really at high level, producing auto manufacturing place happens to be offered to purchase sophisticated tools which isn't an excessive amount of reduced revenue.
Ultimately, make the effort to market vehicle manufacturing area automatic as a way to keep top quality can be another significant source of developing availability of software. Business automatic robot creator Yaskawa Power (YaskawaElectric) place inside Shanghai while using welding automatic robot on the enterprise table. To the car, gadgets along with other items factors Omron (Omron) Shanghai place includes a warning program put in, the machine finds an unsuccessful production personnel might obtain notice. A growing number of vehicle assemblage collection welding automatic robot was utilized to generate the high quality a higher level welding device handbook soldering is much more reputable than previously.
Spiders provide automatic tools making business popular market increase. Japan's device instrument business exports to be able to Cina as opposed to many significant financial disaster, there's been considerable restoration. It can be recognized which within the Cina Electronic digital portion purchases the corporation may be quite steady. China's interest in these kinds of equipment inside 12 Last year of your behave which surpassed the particular need inside The japanese, okazaki, japan device instrument purchases right now take into account concerning 30%.
At the same time, this article in addition noticed that Cina isn't just the opportunity industry, can be another rival. China's device instrument manufacturing last year above The japanese as well as Indonesia rates very first on the globe. Nevertheless, lower levels regarding Oriental organizations focused on search engine optimization gainesville, Oriental producers nonetheless can't comprise any non-Chinese organizations inside one on one opposition. Actually China's most significant device instrument producer Shenyang Appliance Application (Class) Corp., Ltd. within the numerous industrial facilities, are nevertheless popular programmed devices creator Fanuc (Fanuc) as well as Siemens (Siemens) to manage the creation of CNC manufacturing course of action; that they THK can also be utilized in The japanese to manage the particular importation regarding devices manufacturing collection linear guidebook as well as soccer ball attach using Seiko.
Nevertheless, producers inside The japanese as well as The european union remains the automatic industry innovator inside high-end items. High-end clients more quality as opposed to expense of top quality device equipment. The japanese as well as The european union, the normal precision regarding device instrument manufacturing will be the item of 5 occasions, moreover, the corporation also provides an array of tech support team. Many years to develop any popularity can also be critical. These brand new newcomers on the niche for Oriental organizations are incredibly substantial boundaries.
Through the automatic a higher level making, Cina right now symbolizing The japanese within the very first half the particular 1980's degree. Using the business developing usage of sophisticated engineering, Cina will heighten the interest in automatic tools, consequently, KatsushiSaito Zhi Chu, international producers regarding automatic tools, task must be tips to capitalize of the chance.

It doesn't take long to figure out that the Toshiba design is flawed and is very suspect to overheating. Heat will slowly kill the MotherBoard components.
I recommend turning the Laptop Off and unplugging all accessories. Get a good Flash light and look down into the CPU HeatSink Cooling Fins (where the HOT air comes out) You should be able to see inside the area unrestricted. If you see a bunch of Grey Matter, it's more than likely clogged with dust bunny's restricting the airflow.
Get a can of compressed AIR. Get a vacuum cleaner and hose...no attachments. Turn the laptop upside down on a flat surface so that you have access to both the intake fan vents and the exhaust vents. (facing towards you)
I have a technique where I hold the vacuum nozzel direcly flat against the FAN IN-Take vent--with the vacuum on--I use the compressed air in 2 second bursts to clean out each of the narrow heat-sink vanes. (Not the open spaces in the plastic case, but each of the metal cooling fins)
Try to not use too much compressed air as it does have a tiny amount of liquid in it.  You could also wait 30 or so  minutes to let it dry.
It's a quick fix, but the alternative is to completely taking apart (on most Toshiba's) to get access to the heat sink and CPU.
If you don't see any dust or any more dust after blowing it out and it is still overheating...you could try what I did below...
I saw a youtube video where a guy rigged up an external 80mm fan with a shroud and duct tape. He powered the 12VDC fan with a battery, but I used one of those Variable Voltage Adapters...set it 12VDC and connected it with Aligator Clips. It didn't look pretty, but the external fan kept the laptop ICE cold.

  • Rubberized Hard Case?

Just asked this(person was helpfull but didn't know) Is Rubberized Hard case a good case? IS it better than a plain hard case, or do you think that it gets easily dirty and is hard to lean. I like the idea of a silicon feel but I'm hesitant to get one.

"Heat disspation" requires air cooling all parts of all surfaces of the aluminum case, not just small vents.
If you were talking about a ventilated bottom metal support that has external powered fans to force more air over the surfaces, I would agree with with you.
But blocking air contact with any part of the surface is not wise.
If you want to eliminate all risk of scratches or surface blemishes, I would not even try.  Just be careful.  You can also buy a "personal articles rider" for homeowner's or renter's insurance that covers significant bosy damage, but I expect the policy I have on mine to cover dropping ofr theft instead of simple scratches.

  • New macbook pro user, need advice

So this is my very first macbook pro, it's a 2009 model 2.53GHz and 4GB RAM. I seem to be getting used to it the more I use it, however I did notice sometimes it heats up a bit which I understand is normal due to the loads it is doing. This brings me to my first question, I am thinking of purchasing somethings like a external cooling fan to help it out, is this a good idea and if so which would you recommend?
I know I also had another question, but even if my life depended on it right now I cannot remember, it will come to me eventually.

Double click the disk drive icon, inside you will find the installer .pkg
.dmg is a disk image file it opens as a disk and mounts on your desktop.

  • Older Mac Mini Shuts Down due to Overheating

After researching this issue extensively and trying every suggestion, I finally began placing icepacks underneath my Craig'slist purchased Mac Mini to keep it cool. I must also keep the blinds shut to minimize solar heating and sometimes run the ceiling fan in my office. I also must watch the temp on SMC FanControl to make sure it does not rise above 130°. I'm now looking for an external cooling fan which I hope will keep this situation more permanently under control. Does anyone know of a good one? Remember, external fan, not internal. My hardware info is :
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: Mac mini
    Model Identifier: Macmini2,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MM21.009A.B00
    SMC Version (system): 1.19f2
    Serial Number (system): YM824031YL2
    Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-0016CBB0A806

To diagnose this, one really needs to know if the Mini's internal fan speeds up (and gets noisy) before the thermal shutdown occurs.
Not sure why you brought up "liquid cooling systems": the Mini has a standard CPU heatsink. There is no liquid cooling anywhere in the Mini.
Sometimes the contact between the CPU and heatsink gets compromised and the Mini can no longer keep the CPU cool. This is more likely to have occurred if the Mini has been modified or upgraded by the previous owner.
