External Plextor Duel Layer DVD Writer  or  Superdrive

Still looking at Macbook 2.0 with Superdrive
Already own a fast Plextor duel layer external burner.
Will Macbook and all programs be able to use/access this drive, as well as / just like a Superdrive ?
Other than the convienience of a Superdrive being built into Macbook, I can't see any benefit downgrading to a Superdrive.
DO YOU ?
Macbook 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Combo Drive, 2G, 120G HD

well when I buy something and I have to choose between features that can't be upgraded later like processor, or in this case Superdrive or Optical Drive. I always just get the best one. unless moneys an issue thats different. but if your not necessarily on a budget get the best. you won't regret having something you might not end up using much. but getting the minimum you later might end up wishing you had it. I find having a superdrive handy for when I go to a friends place or go out of town and need to burn something it really comes in handy.

  • Duel Layer DVD in iDVD

    I am using iDVD to convert VHS to DVD and want(ed) to use Duel Layer DVDs so I could put more video on one DVD. My problem is that at 30 to 45 mins. from completion during the Multiplexing process the DVD pops out and the program says DONE but it also says it has 30 mins. to go.  When you put the DVD back in, the DVD is blank.  What do I need to do.  Is it a problem with iDVD or just using the Duel Layer DVDs.  By the way, I have a MacBook Pro 17".

    In response to MartinR - I am using the following:
    MacBook Pro: MacBookPro6,1
    OS X  Mountain Lion - 10.8.4
    I used a VCR hooked up to my MBP through an ION VIDEO2PC, I converted all of them to mp4 after I edited all of the snow and junk out of the videos in iMovie - They are all now mp4 files
    iDVD version 7.1.2
    Memorex DL DVD+R
    I still can burn single layer DVDs, BUT they are doing the same thing when I try to make multiples, making copies through iDVD after the intial one is burned.  So I have to cancel out of the burning process,  it usually works and take about 18 mins. vs the 2-3 hrs. that it takes the inital DVD to burn
    If it means anything I have/had all of my video files on an external 2TB hard drive and now I copy the files I plan to use back to the main drive on the MBP to see if that helps things
    In response to Courcoul - I did a Get Info on the blank DL DVD and it said 6,148 bytes (8 KB on disk) for 1 item
    I value both of your opinions, thank you both for responding, tell me what you think could be the hang-up on all of this since I gave you more info.  If you need more info the make a better decision just let me know.

  • External USB 2.0 DVD writer - sleep mode issue

    I have an Adaptec USB PCI card and hook up with an external USB DVD writer. When I try to standby (sleep mode) it, only screen blanks out, PowerMac G4 does not go to sleep, and no way to wake up or access to it. Only way is a hard shutdown.
    The question is, do I need to disconnect this DVD writer first and do I need eject this USB 2.0 device first?
    Thanks

    Hi
    Most Mac compatible USB 2.0 PCI cards seem to have problems supporting sleep. Typically either the computer won't sleep, or it will sleep but hang on wakeup, or it will sleep and wake up but the device will no longer be recognised until a restart. One solution seems to be to switch off any connected USB devices before sleeping the computer.

  • Dual Layer DVD write error #80020022 - failure to communicate with disk

    This only happens on Dual Layer DVDs, and always just as it's finishing. "Communcation with the disk drive failed error code: 80020022"
    Used Disk Util and direct burn via finder - both give same error. The image is a .cdr created via DiskUtil, original from a factory cut dual layer DVD, about 7.2GB. The target blank is a "Double Layer DVD+R" Memorex.
    The resultant disk is full, but unusable. Re-insertion sees it as a blank disk with no usable space. It wrote something, but certainly not the TOC?
    MacBook Pro 2.5, about 6 months old, lastest Leopard
    Please - any ideas? Do I have a hardware issue?

    Wow - thanks for the quick reply, pullman! I did all of the ideas you listed, no luck. The only way to make this fail is to write to a double sided DVD, I've gone through a stack already just testing/failing. This also fails when writing to a double sided DVD through the finder (then clicking on "burn")
    Here's a copy of the console error logs:
    http://baxnet.com/bs/picture6.png
    -- which indicate a hardware/polling error on the DVD drive itself.
    Note that it is complaining about /dev/disk1, which on my system maps to the DVD drive:
    Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-867
    Revision: HA13
    Serial Number: HG010865
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
    Low Power Polling: Yes
    Thanks again for your help - but still no luck. According to the logs, this may well be a device/hardware problem. Would you suggest a call to Apple support?

  • Please recommend a dual layer dvd writer drive...

    For my Dual 2.0 GHz G5.
    Looking for something reliable, fast, cheap and will write dual-layer dvds as well as all the other usual stuff.
    Thank you

    Hi Red Havoc.
    I've got the same machine and I fitted a Pioneer DVR - 115D and it runs fine. You have to play a bit with the height of the screws to get it to fit snugly. I couldn't use the black knurled screws on the original drive cos it rides too high with them and the tray gets caught on the edge of the aperture. I think I just used some long hard drive screws in the end. It' quite straightforward.
    There's a bloke on eBay who is doing them for about 25 quid at the mo.
    I think any Pioneer optical drive will fit plug and play as they supply all the Apple originals anyway.
    Good luck,
    L2K8

  • What duel layer dvds to use?

    Does anyone have any suggestions as to make and reliability?

    I've always found Verbatim DVD-R DL (the regular not gold plated) the most reliable.

  • External HD or CD/DVD writer

    Got a 400MHz grape iMac 80Gb HD with a dvd/cd ROM drive with 2 firewire ports and would like to buy external storage or a disc burning device ....I have approx £150 sterling to spend.
    My questions are :Which would you go for cd/dvd burner or external HD and why ? or could I get both?
    Also: Which brands of these devices are proven to work well with this iMac?
    I really do appreciate all help and advice
    kindest regards, Rebecca

    I'd recommend an external "SuperDrive" (DVD±RW) burner, which connects via FireWire or FireWire and USB 2.0, but not by USB 2.0 only. Your iMac's onboard USB 1.1 bus speed would limit burn speeds to 4x, which would hinder the drive's capabilities. In the US, Other World Computing has such a drive for about £59, exclusive of shipping. It has a Pioneer DVD±RW drive, which is very compatible with the Mac burning programs. I'm sure that you can find an equivalent product from retailers in your area. A DVD±RW drive will give you the capability to burn just about every type of media available, such as CD, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW. Because of your relatively slow 400 MHz G3 processor, I wouldn't suggest buying one with the idea of burning DVD movies, but rather to create data backup disks on DVD media, which hold substantially more than CD media. You'd still have money to buy an external hard drive, so if you chose to go with one, I'd recommend a FireWire-connected drive, as opposed to a USB 2.0 drive. FireWire is the superior bus for the reasons discussed here. Additionally, a FireWire hard drive won't have the 128 GB limitation that the internal hard drive in your iMac is restricted to. Seagate and Western Digital market a line of external hard drives, with those featuring FireWire connectivity a bit higher in price than those that are strictly USB 2.0 devices. I'd also recommend a drive that has its own power supply, so that it doesn't draw its DC power from the iMac's FireWire bus.

  • External NEC dual layer DVD player not reconized by DVD player

    Mac DVD Player will not reconize Movies inserted into the NEC DVD RW (model ND-3500AG) or Toshiba DVD-R (modelSD-R5112) installed in an external Firewire enclosure with an error of "THERE WAS AN INITIALIZATION ERROR" "A valid DVD drive could not be found. (-70012) any help with this would be great.

    Apple's DVD Player will only run if there is a DVD player installed inside the computer; you can use this application to play DVDs from the external drive.

  • Blu Ray drive/burner can't write dual layer DVD - W500 Vista 64

    I recently did a clean Vista 64 Business install on a new hard drive. I pretty much have everything up and going, except the Blu Ray drive doesn't recognize that it can write dual layer DVDs. I ran Nero InfoTool and it, too, tells me that the drive cannot write dual layer DVDs. (Pretty much everything in InfoTool is checked, read and write, except all the HD-DVDs and the dual layer DVD write functions.) Does anyone have any ideas? My understanding is that the drive can write dual layer DVDs.

    I'll answer this with the same information that I posted at TPF:
    From: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70234
    Reads or writes data with speedy maximum data transfer rates of:
    * 16x maximum (writing to CD-R media)
    * 10x maximum (writing to CD-RW media)
    * 5x maximum (writing to DVD-RAM media)
    * 8x maximum (writing to DVD+/-R media)
    * 4x maximum (writing to DVD+/-RW media)
    * 2x maximum (writing to BD-R/RE SL media)
    * 1x maximum (writing to BD-R/RE DL media)
    * 24x maximum (reading CD-ROM, CD-R media)
    * 24x maximum (reading CD-RW media)
    * 8x maximum (reading DVD-ROM/-R/+R SL media)
    * 6x maximum (reading DVD-ROM/-R/+R DL media)
    * 6x maximum (reading DVD-RW/+RW media)
    * 5x maximum (reading DVD-RAM media)
    * 2x maximum (reading BD-ROM media)
    * 2x maximum (reading BD-R/RE SL/DL media)
    It appears that DL (dual layer) writing in DVD-R and DVD+R formats is not supported.

  • Dual Layer DVD Help

    Hi All, I was thinking of purchase a Dual Layer DVD burner from ebay (Apple USB 2.0 External 20x Double Layer DVD Burner; Mac/PC) and was wondering if there are any known issues. I've got a superdrive now but I would like the extra space when creating home movies from iMovie to iDVD. Will iDVD recognize the external DVD burner so I can choose single or dual layer to burn my project Please keep in mind, I'm using a Dual 1 ghz G4 (MMD) and running iDVD 7.0.3 Thanks Scott

    Hello,
    Your computer is fine for support of a double-layer superdrive. Just make sure to plug it into the ATA-66 port on the logic board if you plan to burn in speeds of 16-20x or more.
    ATA-3 won't handle full burns at 20x.

  • Dual layer DVD burner any time soon?

    I have an old PowerBook 1.33ghz. I'm itching to replace it with a MacBookPro. I upgraded this PowerBook with a dual layer DVD burner, and I use it a lot. I moved to the US from the UK and send many DVD's back to family and friends in the UK. I can't live without the dual layer DVD writer, plus backing up requires less DVD's and hence less space on my shelves.
    Anyone here know when Apple will release a model with a dual layer DVD writer? I refuse to buy an external.
    This old G4 has better DVD support than Apples flagship portable computer, doesn't seem right does it. I keep thinking I can live without dual layer, but its just such a step back.
    Anyone know of when this may change and MacBookPro will get a dual layer burner? I dont know how long I can wait to get my hands on the new MacBookPro . . .

    As soon as the industry can make one (so thin). I'll be buying one to replace it on my MBP. Might be Blu-ray

  • Can't find DVD writer

    I have a Plextor PX-716AL DVD writer which Encore 2.0 can't recognize - this is kind of odd since it was OK with 1.5. Any suggestions other than dumping 2.0 and going back to 1.5?

    Last year I put Encore 1.5 on my 64-bit computer and it interfered with Windows seeing my DVD drives. I deleted the lower filters line in the registry, and kept Nero off my computer, and it worked fine. I just got the upgrade to Encore 2.0, and after installation, the same thing happened. Now I removed the upper filters line, like it says in the help instructions I saved from last year, but this time when I re-install, the drives are gone again. Now what? (I'm not that knowledgeable, just following a cookbook fix I got off the forum a year ago.)
