External powered speakers pop on wake from sleep

I just got new iMac 21.5, the most recent one that came out in May 2011. It is replacing my old iMac, the 21.5 that came out late 2009. When the new iMac wakes from sleep, the external speakers that I have connected (Harmon/Kardon Soundsticks) may a loud pop. This did not happen with my old iMac. The speakers are connected in the earphones out port. There is no difference in the setup between the two iMacs, and I have not changed the setup with the speakers. Everything is plugged in just the way it was.
I don't think the exact make of the speakers is important; what's important is that they're external powered speakers. Answers or discussion of any of these questions would be helpful:
Anyone with a new iMac having this problem?
Anyone with a new iMac not having this problem?
Has anyone with any kind of Mac had this problem and had it fixed?
The tech at the Apple Store said he was happy to swap out the logic board, but felt that the pop may still be there afterwards. He thought that this pop through external powered speakers when waking from sleep may or may not be normal in some cases. He said it's possible that Apple may have changed the audio circuitry from the time my old iMac was built. (The new logic board is currently on order.)
Thank you,
Mario

I found the following article from Apple: TA20612. It reads as follows:
"The popping sound does not indicate any software issue or hardware failure. This is a normal part of hardware-software initialization after waking from sleep or during startup."
I'm a bit skeptical. I think I would have noticed this on the old iMac. Since I haven't yet sold it, I'm going to try to arrange for some side-by-side testing. I'll update this thread when I have the results.

  • MBP Retina - External Disks consistently disconnect when wake from sleeps

Everytime I wake my MBP from an extended sleep (ie, overnight) it says that all of my external drives (FW 800, USB) were improperly ejected, and this could lead to damage... etc.
They are not ejected or unplugged, they remain connected to MBP. This exact scenario happens when I bring MBP home from work and attach different drives.. If i have an App open like Aperture, it loses it connection to the external FW dirve and cannot find source material, I have to reboot App.
    Any Ideas

Ive got the same problem with a Western Digital 500GB My Book Pro on my iMac Ive tried it on a few other machines and I think its happened on them, I say think because it was only when it had happened a couple of time that I started to take notice of circumstances etc and ive only had the drive a week, downloaded what may be a more uptodate "My Button manager" from the WD site still happened but Ive got this idea that it didnt happen on one machine which may not have had the MyButton thing on at that time, have you solved it yet I am using USB at the moment.

  • How do i play music from my ipod shuffle gen 4 on external powered speakers

Can I play music from my IPOD shuffle gen 4 using external powered speakers?  If so, how do I hook it up?

First a curiosity question. Why do you want to play through the computer? Why not use headphones?
Ok, now to your question. I have never done this before, but this intrigued me. I did some experimenting and got it to work. Here is what I did:
    1) Connect Touch to computer.
    2) Open iTunes.
    3) Your device will show up in the left panel.
    4) Click the little triangle next to your device to expand it.
    5) You now have access to the different content on the Touch.
I have played stuff from Music, Movies and my playlists. Everything works the same way as if it was on your PC.
Hope that helps and good luck!

  • Lion, external monitor, and wake from sleep - please help!

For the most part I love Lion.  However, the changes they made to the external monitor support are not helpful for me.  Let me explain...
I have a 13" 2009 MBP.  In my office I use a monitor stand that the laptop can slide into from either the left or the right, and the monitor sits on top.  Previously I would simply take my closed MBP in sleep mode, slide it under the stand, and plug everything in.  Once the power cord and monitor cable were plugged in, as soon as I inserted something into the USB or SD-Card slot (or I think even the ethernet jack) the laptop would wake from sleep and the monitor would come on.
Now, however, this doesn't happen.  My only option is to plug everything in, open the laptop so it wakes up, then close the lid, then slide it into the stand.  This is definitely NOT an improvement!  Before I had my phone at the left of the monitor stand, and would slide the laptop in from the right.  Now, though, I have no choice but to slide it in from the left (after going through the above hassel), which means I had to move the phone off of my desk.
The energy saving preferences have the "wake on network access" box checked, which would make me think that it would wake up as soon as the ethernet cord is plugged in - but no such luck.  I also have wireless in the office, but it's hard for it to recognize that when it's in sleep mode.
Has anyone else had this problem?  Is there a solution I'm missing here?  I'm using a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse, so of course those won't do anything while the computer is asleep.

I'm beginning to hate Lion because of this one problem. It's great that Lion doesn't sleep when you close the laptop with external monitor connected. But I can no longer wake the external monitor with USB mouse movement. I have to open and close the lid. This is very inconvenient when switching between two systems with KVM. The MacBook is awake; it just won't wake the monitor.

  • Display no longer wakes from sleep after latest updates

    G4 Quicksilver 933, nVidia Ti, 1.5GB, 20in Cinema Display
I applied the latest updates that were pushed out recently (10.5.2 and the "Leopard Graphics Update") and now my Apple display will not properly come up when I wake the box from suspend.
That is, it starts and runs fine, but if it goes into sleep, upon waking it will (sometimes) flash the contents of the desktop, and then go black. The litte green light is on. Happens from a logged in session, or from the main login screen.
I have to hit the reset or power button (or login via SSH and issue a shutdown) to get it to work again.
I only have a single monitor.
    I tried:
o Powering the monitor off and on, both from the switch and by pulling the power cable
o Pulling the DVI cable and reinserting it
    o Resetting NVRAM
o Re-applying both the 10.5.2 combo installer and the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 in order
o Waving a magic wand... I mean, fixing permissions
o Changing the display resolution a few times
o Running fsck a few times (only because all these unclean shutdowns are making me nervous)
o Hitting the "Detect Displays" button in the Displays Prefs panel...
Aha! Hitting that button causes the display to flash and then go dark. I have to power cycle the unit to get the monitor to come up again.
I do have the special build option of the faster video adapter which was available all those years ago. It's quaint now, sure, but it was a fast card back then.
I'm stumped. It's surprising how something like this can turn a perfectly reasonable desktop into a boat anchor.

This Discussion is marked as Answered, but with my apologies to the other respondents, it is NOT. There is a problem. The software/hardware do NOT work as they are supposed to. Apple needs to address this problem immediately. Mac Book Pro will not wake from sleep when connected to a Cinema Display 23". The problem lies in the most recent operating system updates. Before the update the products worked as advertised, since then they do not. Period.
With all due respect, I am the one who posted this, and I marked it "answered." Yes, there very well may be a problem with the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 (what a mouthful! I dub it "LGU v1.0" from this point on.), but this is so far only a hypothesis.
I found an immediate workaround which suits my purpose. If this does not suit the purposes of completely foreign (to this discussion) symptoms related to Intel-based Apple laptops and external displays, then so be it. I recommend splitting off your own symptoms to a new thread.
Certainly, my reading of the symptoms described after I posted mine mostly do not sound like what I ran into at all. For example, I never once said that my computer had problems waking from sleep. I said the /display/ had problems waking/starting up after sleep, and this is probably related to the "detect displays" mechanism that the OS uses to find attached displays when it comes out of suspend. Even if this is my misunderstanding it does not matter, since this is how it comes across to a reader. This may indicate that someone may want to clearly and carefully describe /exactly/ what they are seeing, and the steps they took in order to come to any conclusions they might have.
This will help Apple, and it will certainly help others that search these threads with their own similar but different issues they need solved.
If there is a common reproducible issue related to displays and the most recent update(s), then Apple already knows about it, or soon will. As far as my immediate needs are concerned, this is answered.

  • I'm booting from a new LaCie Thunderbolt SSD and it won't wake from sleep.

As my boot drive I have a new 1TB LaCie Thunderbolt SSD Disk. It's connected to a 27" 2.7 GHz Intel i5 iMac (mid 2011). I'm running OS X 10.8.2. Nothing else is connected on Thunderbolt.
Everything runs fine and very fast, with the one exception of not waking from sleep.
When I try to wake it up, the screen illuminates and the desktop is not completely frozen: I can drag windows around, but I can't open applications or do anything with the Finder. I get a spinning beachball if I move the cursor over the menu bar at the top. The only option is to restart.
I've contacted LaCie and they say their devices are "storage devices" and not "system drives". Yet I've been running my system from a 1TB LaCie D2 for at least a couple of years. I pointed out to LaCie support that nowhere on the box does it say their devices are for storage only.
    Any suggestions?

@Kappy - not the most useful of replies mate to be honest. After all, there is a strong possibility that this has everything to do with the way OS X and the thunderbolt interface handle wake from sleep states.
    @kbrine:
I am having exactly the same problem but with slightly different hardware:
    iMac 27 (mid-2011) with Mountain Lion 10.8.2
Booting from a Crucial M4 SSD in an OWC SATA enclosure connected to a Lacie eSata thunderbolt hub (which is connected to the iMac).
In normal use the drive is super fast and works really well.
But my problem is exactly as you describe, put the machine into sleep, and on wake everything appears to come back ok however you can't open apps from the dock and the spinning beachball appears. You can't do anything else and you have to reboot.
Now the interesting thing is that if I put the machine to sleep and then wake it up again within 1 minute everything works perfectly. After a longer period of time - and I'm presuming when the energy saving profile moves to a deeper sleep state (I don't know for sure so speculation from me here) - I get the problem we are having and I have to reboot.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Updated my SSD to the latest firmware.
No firmware updates available for the OWC enclosure nor the Lacie eSata hub (at least, not that I could find)
Turned off bluetooth (others on this forum had a problem with BT interfering with Thunderbolt displays coming back on after sleep)
Turned off 'Automatic Brightness Adjust' (again, based on Thunderbolt Display problems that others have reported)
I've tried out AutoEJECT and Jettison apps that unmount all external drives and re-mount them when waking from sleep. They've made absolutely no difference. Save yourself a few $$ and don't bother buying them from the App Store.
I've tried unplugging and re-inserting the Thunderbolt cable connecting my eSata hub to the iMac. No effect.
And that's as far as I've got. There are only two things left for me to try:: disable 'Power Nap' which - apparently - can also cause problems with Thunderbolt devices during sleep. But I'm not confident with that being the solution. Turn the power off to the Crucial M4 when the problem occurs and then re-power it in the hope that it causes some sort of refresh of the connection to happen. Again, not sure that's a good solution either as I don't want to be powering down my SSD every time I bring the iMac out of sleep!!!
So I too am open to ideas and opinions on what might be causing these wake-from-sleep problems arising when Mac OS is booted from an external thunderbolt drive.

  • Audio volume low when computer wakes from sleep - os x yosemite

I've been having an issue ever since I upgraded to OS X Yosemite, where the audio volume coming out of my external speakers is extremely low after I wake my computer up from sleep.  The only resolution I have found is restarting the computer.  Once I do that, the audio volume is great.  If I were to boot up my computer after it has been completely shut down, the audio volume is also great.  The issue only occurs after sleep.  Anyone else having a similar issue?  Is there another fix besides restarting the computer?
Speakers: Bose Companion 2 Series II (these are wired, not bluetooth)
Computer: Mac Pro - late 2013 - running Yosemite

This is a BUG.  It has been submitted to engineering many times - unfortunately Apple has not done anything about it.   We have 5 Mac Pros,  all 5 do the same thing after updating to Yosemite.   The  PRAM / SMC reset is useless -  we even  installed a fresh  OS on one of the machines (a suggestion of the level 2 Apple tech)  same problem.   Clearly this is a system level bug.   Only way to get it resolved is to keep pounding the bug report site with requests.     The squeaky wheel gets the oil.   The problem is 100% repeatable on the machines that exhibit the bug.
In the mean time  set up an applescript with this command and it will reset the sound - do not include the brackets :
<do shell script "sudo killall coreaudiod" with administrator privileges>
Run it every time you wake from sleep and you won't have to deal with the problem ever again.
Pretty lame that Apple has not fixed it even though the problem appears to be pretty widespread.

  • External monitor initially flashes on waking from sleep

I recently upgraded to 10.4.8. My PowerBook is connected to an external monitor and now often flashes when I wake the machine from sleep. It takes a while too settle down but then works fine. If I wake from sleep without the external monitor, there are no problems. I had no problems using 10.1. Does anyone have a fix?

  • On wake from sleep Leopard drops USB drive

When my system recovers from a sleep, it drops my USB drive, but does auto-mount, how ever I get the message, of improper shutdown of the external device message, it pain have to click that little window every time I wake from sleep.

Probably because the drive is not compatible with the Energy Saver standard Apple uses. Many third party USB devices aren't familiar with it. If the drive is hooked up via a USB hub, then that hub needs to become familiar with it. If the drive is computer powered, it won't have enough power initially when the computer wakes from sleep. Leave that drive attached only when you use Screen Saver, or when the machine is on regularly. Contact the drive vendor to let them know they need to offer an update if you can't find one on their site to handle Energy Saver.

  • Mac Mini repeatedly refuses to wake from sleep

Please to anyone I really need your help.
First let me preface you that I know my console log is incredibly long, and let me know if there is a way to make them more manageable and I will update.
Also let me know which other logs or screen shots or active programs I can provide
    I have a 2011 2.5 ghz Mac mini i5 with AMD Radeon 6630M
I have customized this with a 256gb SSD and 2TB HDD as well as 16gb RAM.
I also have a Monoprice drawing tablet attached.
My keyboard and trackpad are bluetooth
    I am running yosemite 10.10.1.
10.10 was installed with a clean install.
    So here is the issue:
The computer was working perfectly, and then, I can't identify a specific time, it started to just occasionally refuse to wake up from sleep (monitor off, won't activate).
Interestingly it seems to have only started happening AFTER I purchased an apple TV which I use to mirror my screen for video playback. Prior to that I had two mac mini's (one hooked up to TV as a media center and one desktop). This configuration resulted in no freezing issues for a few months.
My parents wanted to get an apple desktop so I ended up giving them my mac mini media center and decided to try using an apple TV mirroring with my mac mini instead.
Now the computer seems to work perfectly fine for a day or two and then it just refuses to wake from sleep.
I do a hard reset and it boots up with no issue and everything works perfectly for a couple days (or less), then it just won't wake from sleep at all.
This can occur when still mirrored to apple TV, but also occurs when it is not.
Background programs tend to be: dropbox, google drive, evernote, flycut, Teamviewer, safari and google chrome
Additionally I have noticed that if the computer has been on for a couple days, when trying got mirror it becomes very choppy.
Activity monitor identifies no CPU or memory hogs. (can post if needed)
The console does seem to show A LOT of issues, but I can't make any sense of them, and I have tried searching google for what they might mean.

Is this related to the problem? What does it mean?
My 2010 27" iMac running Yosemite won't wake up from sleep.

  • Mountain lion - wake from sleep - destroys hdd

I upgraded my macbook pro mid 2009 model to mountain lion.
First crash - left my computer for 3 hrs playing music using iTunes. Hdd went to sleep, screen is sleeping as well. I moved my mouse and everything froze. Music stopped. Waited for a minute. Nothing happened. I forced shutdown by holding power button for 5 seconds. Reboot failed because hdd can no longer be detected. (Gray folder with question mark) Not even by the install disk.
I brought it to the service center and they replaced my hdd after i approved it. It works ok then. Reinstalled mountain lion and all my stuff.
Second crash - i left my computer for an hour playing music through Grooveshark. Screen and hdd went to sleep while music still played ok. I moved the mouse to wake from sleep but the screen remained black. I can see the cursor not moving but the music was still playing. I put down the lid and waited for a few seconds before turning it on. Screen was still black except for mouse. Music stopped when i closed the lid. I forced shutdown by holding the power button for 5 seconds. Reboot failed because the hdd cannot be detected. (Gray folderneith question mark) Not even by the install disk.
I'm going to the repair center tomorrow and have it checked again. It's only been a week since i got back from the repair center...
So i was reading about the issues with mountain lion waking from sleep where the hdd has slept as well. But it seems that their hdds were intact and they were able to reboot. Mine however, has left my hdd as a heavy paper weight.
2 things, how do I repair the hdds and use them again? Is the issue caused by waking from sleep with the hdd sleeping as well?
Note that in both occurrences, my mbp was plugged in.
Or is it possible that the 2009 model just can't handle mountain lion?
I'm thinking of using ubuntu to force mount my 2 broken hdds and hopefully recover some of my data though all my important files and documents are in sugarsync and dropbox. (Thank God for online storage!) though this is quite detrimental to teaching...

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • Wake from sleep volume extremely loud after 10.9.4 update

Every time I wake from sleep since the 10.9.4 update, my Mac Pro's volume to my speakers (via headphone jack) seems to be insanely loud despite system prefs showing the volume level at middle. Normally I like to keep my speaker's volume high and turn the system volume down, but it seems like the OSX is ignoring the system volume setting after waking up. It reverts to proper behavior when I hit volume up or down on the keyboard. Anyone notice this?

    Reset the NVRAM.
    NVRAM reset:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information. If issues persist, your Mac's logic board battery (not a portable Mac's rechargeable battery) may need to be replaced. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down. You can take your Mac to a Mac Genius or Apple Authorized Service Provider to replace the battery on the logic board.

  • No wake from sleep with upgrade to 10.10.3

I recently upgraded a new iMac Retina 5K to Yosemite 10.10.3. Since the upgrade, the iMac will no longer wake from sleep. The screen remains black. I have to hold the power button for several seconds to reboot the machine. I am using the standard Bluetooth keyboard and Trackpad.
I have tried reseting the SMC, PRAM, and booting into Safe Mode (none of which fixed the problem). I know I can turn sleep off via Energy Saver, but my workflow makes using sleep a better option for me.
I looked in the system logs and find a dozen of the following messages after I try to wake from sleep:
    Apr 12 12:10:12 iMac kernel[0]: **** [IOBluetoothHCIController][TransferACLPacketToHW] -- commandSleep(&mSystemOnTheWayWakingUp) failed -- counter = 1 ****
    Apr 12 12:10:22 iMac kernel[0]: **** [IOBluetoothHCIController][TransferACLPacketToHW] -- commandSleep(&mSystemOnTheWayWakingUp) failed -- counter = 2 ****
    Apr 12 12:10:32 iMac kernel[0]: **** [IOBluetoothHCIController][TransferACLPacketToHW] -- commandSleep(&mSystemOnTheWayWakingUp) failed -- counter = 3 ****
    Apr 12 12:10:42 iMac kernel[0]: **** [IOBluetoothHCIController][TransferACLPacketToHW] -- commandSleep(&mSystemOnTheWayWakingUp) failed -- counter = 4 ****
    Apr 12 12:10:52 iMac kernel[0]: **** [IOBluetoothHCIController][TransferACLPacketToHW] -- commandSleep(&mSystemOnTheWayWakingUp) failed -- counter = 5 ****
    Apr 12 12:11:02 iMac kernel[0]: **** [IOBluetoothHCIController][TransferACLPacketToHW] -- commandSleep(&mSystemOnTheWayWakingUp) failed -- counter = 6 ****
Anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it?

    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article. That's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. Please read the whole article carefully and don't skip any of the steps, including the ones under the heading Additional troubleshooting. If you don't understand any of the steps, ask for guidance.
Also note that if you replaced the internal hard drive with an SSD, or if you're starting up from an external SSD, then that device may be causing the problem. Check the SSD manufacturer's website for a firmware update. The only solution may be to reinstall the original drive or avoid sleep altogether.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.5 or earlier, from the menu bar select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Accessibility
If the checkbox at the bottom marked
              Enable access for assistive devices
is checked, uncheck it and test.
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select
               ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Privacy ▹ Accessibility
If any applications are listed on the right and have a checked box next to them, uncheck all the boxes and test. You may first have to click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate as an administrator to unlock the settings.
    Step 3
In the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences, uncheck the box marked
Put hard disks to sleep when possible
    Step 4
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.
    Step 5
This and the next step must be taken as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ Diagnostic and Usage Messages
In the search box in the window's toolbar, enter "powerd" (without the quotes.)
You may see one or more lines like this:
    com.apple.message.signature: Platform Failure
If you do see that, and you did everything in the preceeding steps, then you're dealing with an internal hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
    Step 6
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down.
You may see one or more reports with a name that begins with "Sleep Wake Failure" followed by a date. Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • Power Mac G4 Quicksilver Won't Wake From Sleep

I have a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 933MHz that will not wake up after it goes to sleep. It is currently running OS X 10.3, has had its hard drive replaced, system reinstalled, and been DiskWarrior'd. Haven't tried replacing the PRAM battery yet but get no indication its dead (clock keeps time wen off). It always connected to an Apple 17" Cinema Display--could that be the source of the problem?

    Hi, Toolshed4!
Third Party USB devices and USB PCI cards are notorious potential culprits for no wake from sleep issues so please follow japamac's lead and look at them as potential culprits. Disconnect the external peripherals and test sleep/wake. Swap a third party keyboard and/or mouse with your Apple one(s) and test. Remove any PCI cards, and test. (It's perhaps good practice to reset the PMU after you add or remove an internal component.)
A Cinema Display, especially one with a built-in USB port or hub problem, could create an issue, though it would more likely to be one of not sleeping, rather than not waking. You might quickly check your system log for possible indicators of USB issues with the Display, if you have reason to suspect that its ports may not be functioning properly.
Resetting NVRAM in Open Firmware sometimes resolves the issue. Resetting your PMU as japamac suggested will take care of the NVRAM reset for you.
If the above didn't resolve things, please continue on...
Corrupt Energy Saver preferences are sometimes the cause. Quit System Preferences if it's opened and navigate to /Library/Preferences/System Configuration (folder) and delete the following preference files:
    com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    com.apple.AutoWake.plist
(The AutoWake plist file may or may not be present, depending on whether or not you have/had scheduled sleep settings.)
Then navigate to ~/Library/Preferences and delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist preference file. Restart and test sleep again.
If your battery is old, it's a good idea to just get a new one. The worst that can happen is that you'll have a spare when you need it. They're about $5 online. If you go to Radio Shack with the one you have, they'll test it for you. Alternately, put a voltmeter on it and insure that you're reading at least 3.3 volts DC. New ones read 3.6 - 3.9 volts.
