External SATA Port Multiplier

Hi to all, I have an HP PAVILLON DV3550EL and I would like to buy an External SATA Port Multiplier in order to connect more than one hard disk to the eSATA port, but I don't know if the laptop is esata port multiplier compatible.
Can anybody tell me if it is compatible or not? Is there also some other information that I should know in order to purchase the right product?
Thanks in advance for your availability!

  • Do the 8200 elite CMT motherboard SATA ports support SATA port multipliers?

I have an HP-Compaq 8200 elite CMT. I'd like to expand my SATA connection capacity using a SATA port multiplier. Specfications for most of them indicate they work only with motherboards that support the SATA PM / port multiplier feature. Does my motherboard support PM?
    Thanks!

    Paul,
You have one of the models.
Most Intel PCs that I have come across don't support SATA port multipliers except for MACs.

  • P67A-GD55 Sata port multiplier compatibility

    Hello!
I'm trying to figure out if any of the six sata ports on my P67A-GD55 are compatible with SATA port multipliers. I can't find any information on this anywhere.
The ports are two SATA 3 and 4 SATA 2.

    No sir.
Not for us here on these MSI motherboards, and for the most part, not for anyone.
Intel wants ICH* chipset implementations to be point to point, for whatever reason.
They do not support PM, even though they are technically capable of it! Nice guys.
There are two different implementations of PM, one being the "real" Port Multiplier, so to speak.
You might want to do some research, ie. the difference between CBS (Command-Based Switching)
and FIS (Frame Information Structure) aka FBS. Just Google all those terms together like
"sata port multiplier cbs fis fbs switching" etc. and you'll find more information than you ever wanted to know.
    Just kidding.
This will get you going: ATA Wiki @ kernel.org: SATA Hardware Features
While what you choose might depend on your specific PM Host controller in the box you want to hook up,
as a general guide I'd look at the cards that support FBS and have the most "yes" columns; at least AN, and things like NS/NQM are gravy.
You'll notice the one I mention that's on the P67A-GD65, the Marvell 91xx, it supports FBS & AN, and as I said above,
it works great with 4 drives on either port (SilImage SteelVine PM Host). I'm also partial to the Silicon Image SI3132 & 3124 cards,
they rock, and you can find cards based on them for under $20usd anywhere.
If you only have one PM Host you want to connect I'd say it's a no-brainer to go with the same manufacturer for the SATA card's chip.
Nothing says speedy and stable like a matched pair, right?
But to reiterate, no, you will not be connecting a port multiplier host to any of those motherboard ports.
With the Intel RST driver it will detect an "unknown" drive of a whopping 0 bytes capacity.
    HTH!

  • SATA port multipliers on mac mini

    Hello,
I was wondering if it's possible to connect 4 hard drives through a SATA port multiplier plugged to the SATA port instead of the superdrive...
Does anyone knows if the mac mini supports this technology? (I looked for the mac mini developer note, but the most recent I found was of the G4 mac mini...)
    Thank you in advance
    Matteo

I am using a SATA to eSATA lead removed from a PCI Card backplate and a modified gender reversing connector Male-Male.
    Similar to this:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190342062364&ssPageName=STR K:MEWAX:IT#ht765wt941
You may have to copy/paste the URL, I haven't figured how to do it properly yet.
This arrangement works with my G5 from the 'B' drive connector. I see no reason why it shouldn't work with the Mac mini optical drive connection.
I have tried a second time without success. It's not a huge issue, I would just like to crack it.
I am getting the idea a Mac Pro would be better suited for my needs and way of working. The Mac mini is an amazing little tool, but expansion is not it's strong point.

    Hi,
have the MSI P45D3 and just bought the Icydock mb561us-4s (http://www.icydock.com.tw/English/mb561us-4s_frame.html)
which requires the esata to have port multiplier function.
Does the esata have it.....if yes....please help with instructions to enable it.

    Hi,
the onboard eSATA port is hosted by a JMicron JMB362 Chipset, which (according to the JMicron product specifications) supports the following:

  • SATA port multiplier on MSI K8N Neo Platinum - NForce3 250Gb?

    Hi,
I have a MSI K8N Neo Platinum, which uses a NForce3 250Gb chipset. I have read that port multipliers can use either SATA or SATA II hosts and drives, but I don't know if the technology is 100%, transparently compatible.
Is the aforementioned chipset/motherboard compatible with port multiplier technology?
Does it support FIS, which gives the greatest perfomance?
Does it need a BIOS or driver update?
    Thanks for the attention

    Hi!
The K8N Neo Platinum (MS-7030) doesn't use -5v to anything.
So the -5v from the old atx spesification is not needed in your case.
    WoW, thanks for fast reply!
So, it won't be any problem to use Antecs SmartPower 2.0 450W with this board then? Want to make sure about it, before accept Antecs offer for replacement and had spent over 4 days to find the problem with his computer. Really don't want to do it again.

With the "new" Antec SmartPower 2.0 450W
Any problem with this rigg and PSU?
    edit:
Dound this post that it said the board do need -5V and now Im confused?

  • External Sata Port

Hi!  Basically, I have an internal sata hard drive that I want to put in an external mount and use as an external drive.
Anyone know if and which sata cards are recognized by linux?
I don't care about RAID, just want to plug in an internal drive, externally, and
be able to access it at speeds faster than usb or firewire.
    I'm using kernel 2.6.28.

So, as far as I understand you want eSATA? And you don't have eSATA? Desktop/Laptop? A bit more information is always good.
Anyways, in case you have a Laptop: Most Cardbus, ExpressCard eSATA cards are supported as long as they aren't anything fancy. In most cases they use a Silicon Image controller which has been supported by the kernel for a long time.
If you have a desktop: Why bother buying a card? Just get a internal sata to eSATA slot adapter - much cheaper. It'll take up a slot in the back of your PC but no extra OS resources.

  • External SATA recommendations

    All,
Can anyone recommend an external SATA solution for my Powermac G5? I have a card with external ports, but I need advice on the following:
    1. Decent enclosure that will allow spindown of disks
    2. Cables
    3. Disks
The other option would be for a NAS solution, but I don't believe that would be suitable for photography or video editing, but I guess it would be ok for archival storage ?
I'm preferably looking for gear available in the UK and known to work with the G5... Ever since finding out that a WD400GB disk was going to cost me an additional SATA controller, I've been a lot more cautious about this kind of thing

    Wayne,
Your shopping in the same area i have been exploring recently. I'm looking for much more storage, possible with RAID AND backup options. I use Aperture extensively - as extensively as the hopeless and unapgradeable 6600 nVida video card allows. I also have a large itunes collection and do video creation on FC. I need more spindles!
I've settled on the Sonnet E4p PCIe card for my quad offering 4 external SATA ports, and it also support Port Multiplication (PM). PM is a means of clustering bunches of drives physically and connect them to one eSATA port. This particular card £200, supports up to x5 SATA drives per port, thus 20 external drives. However PM is slightly slower than direct connect to each drive. My view is that PM, possibly with RAID within it will be fast enough AND give me a backup option.
After the I/O card there is the choice of enclosure. I have done a lot of reading on what is out there and again i'm falling back to one of two Sonnet products, the 400A and 500P. The former offers x4 SATA drives and supports direct connect to each drive which would make a screaming I/O sub-system. However i also want lots of on-line data capability so speed is not the only priority. This moves me to the 500P enclosure, a x5 SATA PM-only setup. It allows sleep, drive temp monitoring and S.M.A.R.T. What i like about this is i can run a 2-3 drives of 4-500GB SATAII in a fast RAID leaving 3-2 drives for rolling (daily) and (weekly) backup processes as well as one left for x. All within one enclosure. And i still have three eSATA ports to expand on !
AMUG has some good detailed reviews of this and similar equipment:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/home_frame.html
I've not settled on software to run my backups yet, but the above represents my theoritical approach for on-line storage expansion of my Quad. What i am hesitant about is whether i will stick with my mac setup. No matter how much screaming about the lack of video upgrades from Apple, i've been totally hacked-off at the attitude of Apple towards me and others on this Aperture-critical issue. Its a long and very sad story that Apple should be ashamed of. Its 2 days short of 1 year since Apple launched the G5 quad and still they have done NOTHING grrrrrr...
PS One other useful benefit you get from the seperate SATA controller is you can choose and gain from SATA II drives. I'm looking at the WD RE2 drives, 400 or 500GB.
PPS I've been 'stalking' macheaven in the UK, they had the 500P on a ~12% discount, but missed it. Scan seems to have the best prices on drives.
Hope this helps, and appreciate the thoughts of actual eSATA users.

  • External SATA support?

I know some PC motherboards include extra SATA connectors on them that aren't always pre-connected for you. Does the Mac Pro have any extra SATA connectors on its motherboard?
I just saw this deal at Shop4Tech (http://www.shop4tech.com/user.htm?go=view_item&id=5849&siteID=Es5Ekr9eEBk-Gqhcdo kOkqNlKYq4SwHL1w) which is only $24 for an external SATA enclosure. But I'm wondering if there's any way I'd be able to connect it to my upcoming Mac Pro.

There is external SATA support for the Mac Pro using PCIe host adapters. I tried cabling the two SATA ports on the board to the rear of the Mac Pro but they do not support hot swap - so you have to restart each time you change hard drives on them. Not an ideal solution.
    I found a better options.
    1. Get a 2-port WiebeTech Tera Card TCES0-2e for $99.99
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/wiebetech/tces0/
    2. Get a FirmTek SeriTek/2SE2-E and use the FirmTek 2SM2-E driver with it until the new Mac Pro EFI firmware comes out that will allow this card to be bootable.
    3. Call Addonics at 408-433-3898 and ask them to sell you a ADSA3GPX1-2E
flashed with the BASE BIOS b7.3.13 for $39.99 for the Mac Pro. Tell them AMUG sent you. Then use the SiI-3132 Mac driver version 1.1.6 found here:
    http://www.siliconimage.com/support/supportsearchresults.aspx?pid=32&cid=3&ctid= 2&osid=3&
I have three of the Addonics cards in a Mac Pro which provides 6 external hot swap SATA ports. You can use them for RAID or individual hard drives. So when someone tells you that no external SATA ports are available for the Mac Pro they just don't know
    Have fun!

  • Does 760ga-p43 (fx) supports port multiplier for sata?

    1) I have a 760ga-p43 (fx) and I couldn`t find anywhere if it supports port multiplier for sata.
    Does someone have any idea?
    2) I tried a delock 70146 and I couldn`t make it see also the sata on motherboards and the sata on the pci card. For lack of information on that msi "user guide" I tried any combination on AHCI, ide and sata, but it was a blind trying. It would be great a little help on what to look for.

  • External SATA RAID no longer works after 10.5.5 update

After updating to 10.5.5, my external RAID (Sbox) (RAID 10) is no longer recognized – The SATA card is functioning correctly – I can attach a single external SATA drive without problem – all ROM has been updated (working with Sonnet) and we confirmed the proper operation of the card. When the system is attached to the external RAID (with port replicator in enclosure) the card reports an error (both green and amber steady lights) and no activity on the transfer lights. Worked great under 10.5.4 on PowerMac. Any ideas??

It seems as though the problems are multiplying. Other programs are acting funny now - I had to force quit iTunes yesterday and then the Finder froze. Keyboard response was nil, so I couldn't Force quit the Finder, so I had to resort to more drastic measures. It took two reboots to get things running again. I'm going to review some other threads to see if there are any clues there, then probably wipe the hard drive and do a clean install if nothing else seems to address the issue.

  • FW800 Exteral Hard drive and a port multiplier?

Not sure if i can get my answer here, but hoping someone will point me in the right direction.
Basically I am building my own Storage solution.
    I have an imac.
    FW800
I have an external FW800 drive that I have pulled apart for the FW800 to Sata Bridge
This is then connected to a Port multiplier that should give me 5 Sata ports to then attach 5 sata devices.
The External firewire800 bridge has an Oxford Semi conductor OXUF924DSB-FBAG
PDF details here, this suggests that it is already capable of to SATA dries but te board of course only has one. but also says that it supports port multipling.
The port muliplier I have is a
Lycom ST-126RM SATA II 3Gbps 1-To-5 Port Multiplier bridge board (for Rack Mount)
everything has relevant power supplies attacted. But nothing is showing in the disc utility.
Can anyone point me in the direction of anything tried and test please?
    Many Thanks

What type of device and what do you mean by "doesn't work so good"?
It could be that the FW controller is dying - I've had that happen to me and it caused me no end of trouble until I replaced the device (in my case it was an old LaCie external optical drive).

  • Promise T3 and port multiplier function

I have a K9A2 Platinum mobo. It has a Promise T3 controller for the ESata ports. I can find no documentation on this controller, so maybe the company who made them went out of business. I am looking for the information about this controller of whether it supports a "port multiplier function" since I am considering buying a MB561US-4S-1 Quad Bay eSATA & USB 2.0 External Enclosure from Icy Dock.

Quote from: Bas on 12-January-11, 05:42:36
    Typical.
That is why I say, test it first.
Desktop boards often fail to boot from add-in RAID/SATA/SAS/SCSI cards.
And trust me, it more a rule that it fails.
I would like to find a card before I buy the enclosure, but maybe you are right that I should just buy the enclosure I want and then see if it will work directly with the Promise T3 controller on the K9A2 Platinum mobo, if that is what you are suggesting.
As far as testing a card first, I can not do that until I buy a card and then if it does not work I would need to return it. I do not currently have an add-in card with port multiplier function capability.
My reason for wanting to find out in advance whether the Promise T3 controller will work or not is not only that I do not want to have to wait again if I have to get a card but also that I will normally buy all of my items from New Egg and I do not want to have to pay separate shipping for two distinct orders if I can get everything at once.
One of the pluses of building one's own system is that I should be able to find out the technical details of the mobo's components. But finding out about the Promise T3 controller has proved frustrating. I do have a question about the Promise T3 controller in to MSI support so I hope to get a definitive answer shortly from them.

  • Is the ProBook 4520s eSATA port multiplier compatible

I have an HP ProBook 4520s running Windows 7 64 bit.
Is the eSATA port compatible with port multiplier products? If not, is there any hardware I can purchase to solve this?
This is a quote from the external eSATA enclosure that I'm trying to run.
Q Only a single drive appears when using eSATA.
o This means that the eSATA port that the MB561US-4S-1 is connected to does not support port multiplication. Therefore, only the drive in the top bay can be seen by the system. There is a port multiplier built into the MB561 which encodes the 4 SATA connections to a single signal, however another port multiplier is required on the system to decode that signal back to 4 individual SATA connections.

I assume since you cannot see all of the drives it does not, you can try the chat feature on this page to see if a support rep can answer for sure, if not they can log a case number and maybe an engineer can find out and get back to you.

  • SATA Port Multiplication?

    Hey there,
I've got an XServe G5 cluster node that's not being used and I was thinking about making it our new file server. Naturally, there's only room for the single ADM.
Having a look inside, though, I noticed that there's still three SATA connectors on the motherboard, just like the mainstream XServe G5. So I started thinking: wouldn't it be neat if I could connect an eSATA box with a port multiplier to these ports?
I know, I know, I could do the same thing only better (ie: less hax0ry) if I just bought an XServe RAID. But I work at a small business with a small budget.
So the million dollar question is: do the internal SATA controllers on a G5 XServe support port multiplication?

So the million dollar question is: do the internal SATA controllers on a G5 XServe support port multiplication?
I have no idea whether the internal ports support port multiplication, but if all you want to do is add a couple of drives, why not just look at either an external FireWire enclosure or an eSATA card and a SATA enclosure.
Both options would be cheaper than an XServe RAID and avoid the issue of hacking the hardware.
