External screen is primary screen?

Hi,
my MBP died on me. It one of the older models, no unibody yet. The screen does not work anymore. I decided to sell the MBP, but before that I would like to delete my files. I intend to use this "overwrite x-times with zeros" feature. To do so I need to chose at start up the OS-X discs after pressing ALT. Here starts my problem, no screen! How do I teach my MBP to output already the initial EFI-Menu on my external screen. Once the login dialog appears I have output on the screen, but that is just too late :/.
Can someone give me an advice or knows alternatives way for clearing the HDD?

I would consider starting in Target Disk Mode (TDM) and making your computer an external Firewire drive for another Mac. Then just erase like an external drive. You can also open the case and take out the drive, erasing it on another computer with an inexpensive adapter or external drive chassis.

  • Use an external screen as primary screen while the lid is open

is it possible to use an external screen as primary screen while the lid is open on a white MacBook (Lion)?

I can't get this to work either, and I really want it too!
Noisy fans, and overheating laptops are not a pleasant experience when working next to one all day.
Please apple, at least give us the choice!?!
I presume running two screens rather than one also puts more of a drain on the graphic card.

  • I have a MacBook Pro 17 inch and I just destroyed the screen.  Can anyone tell me the keystrokes to turn on the external display as primary?

I have a 17-inch MacBook Pro with a destroyed screen.  (My son put it on the top of his car and drove off and it fell off.)  Can anyone tell me the keystrokes to make an external monitor the primary monitor?  I can see only the upper left side of the laptop screen so I CAN select system preferences.  I can then arrow over to system preferences and down to make selections I cannot see.  I don't know then what to do or IF I can make the choices needed to make the external monitor primary when all I can do is make keystrokes on items I cannot see.  It's an older (about 2008) MacBook Pro and I would like to use the external monitor to see to connect an external hard drive and download files to install on a new MacBook.  My son might know the iOS but I don't.

This is the left side of System Preferences in OS 10.8.3. (if that is not what the MBP is running post back). By the way, if you can grab the top of that pane you could move it over to the top far left. - Same for any pane.
Do this with the external monitor connected and powered on.
You need to click on Displays., and then grope for Arrangement and click there.
When you get there, the two screens are shown.
The trick is to grab the white stripe (on the left in this image) and move it to the other rectangle. You do not have to position it exactly, it snaps into place when it gets close.

  • Primary screen goes dark when external display is added

    Hi,
Earlier, when I was on Mac Lion, I always used to face problems whenever an external Monitor was added to the Mac through the firewire to VGA converter port.
Hoping that Mavericks update would give me a respite from the issue, I upgraded my Mac Pro and to my utter shock, the issue has got magnified in mavericks. The primary screen goes completely dark whenever I add the external monitor.
Any idea how to overcome this issue ?
    Thanks in advance !

I meant the mini Display Port intead i wrote firewire port.. Hope it doesn't confuse anyone !

  • My hp laptop will not start up the screen states primary battery (601) im running a dagnostic test

My screen states primary battery (601) I was on it last night. It just stop I couldn't even logoff and I can't get it to start up.

Try a hard reset, works sometimes.Disconnect all external devices first.
    1-remove power cord and battery
2-press power button for 30 seconds
3-reinstall only power cord for first startup.
    4-power on
Btw- it may be a bad battery stopping it from booting. Leave it out and run with only power cord if needed until you can replace battery.

  • Cannot use my primary Screen since I plugged a second screen [SOLVED]

    Hi folks,
I use a bumblebee configuration with intel + nvidia and I plugged in a second screen via HDMI. Even after restarting with out X!! The first screen remains black after booting. I think I might have to reconfigure the GRUB video config in order to reset the old settings. The Problem arises as following:
    1. When I start, the GRUB shows me the Options, where I select Arch. (still on the primary screen)
    2. Arch beginns to boot, I see messages such as "arch clean ... " (primary screen)
    3. Primary Screen goes black
The only possibility to continue for me is to pluggin the HDMI second screen now, where I can see my Login (no X, only framebuffer)
From the second screen I can start X without problems. When I then go to the gnome settings it tells me that the primary screen should be running as a secondary screen since the external HDMI screen is primary now. But in fact the screen remains black!!
If you have any questions regarding to this please dont hesitate to raise them since this problem is holding me back from my work.
The problem was only the backlight dimming, which has an unusal behavior. Thanks #archlinux for the help.

I had the same problem (also HDMI), and while I dont remember how I set my xorg.conf up, what worked for me was just reading up on creating your own xorg.conf and then do everything from scratch. I use a VGA and HDMI. Tiring work, but now my monitor setup works flawlessly.
I dont think it'll be of any help, but here is my xorg.conf

  • 2 external monitors and internal Screen on T430S and Mini Dock Plus

    Hi Community,
I just got my new T430S and the MiniDock Plus. On the website I've ordered the combination I had the impression that I could use two external screens and the internal screen at once.
Unfortunately I don't manage to find the right settings to achieve that the internal screen is switched on.
I wonder if its just a question of settings or is it simply not possible to extend the screen over three screens.
Any help or hint  is greatly appreciated,
    Andreas

Intel 3000 doesn't support 3 independent LCD in this manner. You would need something USB2DVI or USB2VGA adapter to get the third LCD.

  • Satellite A100-646 and external monitor shows black screen

    Hello to everybody,
I have a similar problem with A100-646 (bought in Italy). Laptop's LCD and external monitor shows black screen but system boots without other problem. When laptop is not used for a long time (half a year) it work for one week without any problem.
Unfortunately, there is no proper service in a place where I live. Perhaps, there is a problem with power supply.
Is there other idea? Does anybody have a service manual? ([email protected])

It is not easy to find shop where you can order original and new hardware components.
Best source for such parts is definitely eBay where you can buy used but well working components.
Upgrade? You must know that upgrade on mobile computers is not the same as on desktops. Cooling possibilities are not the best and each notebook model has optimized cooling system for original parts. So new graphic card can be more powerful and produce more heat and it is definitely not good for your notebook. So best thing you can do is to replace it with original part.

  • How to switch off primary screen

    Hi,
I need to turn off me primary screen on a 2009 27 in imac, how can I do it wile using a second monitor ?
    thanks

    Hey Joe
It's a little tricky, but it can be done!
    1. Switch to Extended Desktop.
    2. Then in *Displays > Preferences > Arrangement* move the Menu bar to the connected monitor/projector.
    3. Then with Shades you can dim either the iMac display or the connected monitor/projector to any level you like.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/31515
    Shades tips:
    1. Shades will only allow you to dim the displays independently in Extended Desktop Mode!
    2. In the Shades Preferences you'll have to check the box for *Constrain to its own screen* in both the iMac and NTSC/Pal tabs.
    3. Now you should see 2 Shades Icons on the menu bar 1 for each of the displays.
    4. Note the Hot Keys and/or set the Min brightness slightly up from 0% at first so you don't get lost in the dark.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Ifou don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

Lol, figured out the first part. Just for those who may be searching, when you click on the Display Preferences, and click on the arraingment tab... it not only shows where your two screens will be displayed, but the WHITE BAR at the top of one screen is the dock/toolbar. Click and hold to grab this and just slide it over to the screen you'd like it to be on.
You have to release it IN the screen box, not on top of it... and it should pop right over to the new (or old) screen. At any rate, you can put the dock on either (or any) screen that you prefer.
I am thinking of ordering more of these. Lol. 3 monitor setup seems like it would be crazy good.
Still looking for the answer to keeping the new 16" screen on the right without switching between screen #s with that... not expose... Lion feature.
Thanks. Hope my other question has an answer out here.

  • Bad video quality on primary screen in SLI set-up

    Hey all,
I've got this specific problem with my video cards. The color is absolutely horrible when i use my two 460GTX Hawk in SLI mode on a dual screen setup.
The strange thing is that this problem only is visible on the primary screen.
    Example primary screen :
    Example secondary screen :
I've tried a lot of different things :
    * Switch monitors => problem persisted with primary
    * Switch primary to secondary => problem persisted with primary monitor
    * Different monitor settings (color depth, resolution, frequency, ...) => problem persisted
    * Turn SLI off => problem solved
    * Turn Dual monitor off => problem solved (also in SLI mode)
It seems that when I want to have SLI and dual monitor this problem occurs.
    Some system specs :
    OS : Win 7 Home premium 64 bit SP1
    Nvidia driver : 301.42
    Vid card bios : 70.04.2E.00.04
    Motherboard : MSI P55A-GD65
    Motherboard bios : 1.6
Not sure what additional information you require...
    All tips are welcome ...
    Thanks in advance

Try MSI vga drivers for your card

  • Best option to use iMac 27" as primary screen

Can anyone please share the best option/accessory to use with the iMac 27" to make it the primary screen for watching HD TV and connecting PS3. I want to hook up these devices via HDMI to Mini Display Port link and was wondering if there is any lag or any other problem.
I have researched on the net and found Belkin AV360 and Kanex. Any preferences?
Thanks for your help in advance. Cheers

  • Dual-Display Issue: Mavericks selects primary screen randomly

I am using to Displays with my Mac Pro connected with 2 internal graphic-cards (2 original mac specific GT 120 ounted at PCIe Slot 1 and Slot 3). It worked like a charme till i updated to Mavericks.
Currently on every system-(re)start the primary screen is swapped/selected randomly. Sometims the left one, sometimes the right one is primary. No matter the display settings i made.
I need a solution for this.
    Best regards
    Volker
    Btw:
When will colors come back to Mac OS? Everythings grey and colorless since Lion. Imho a usability setback. Especially the Finder could benefit of some colored Icons again.

This has been happening to me regularly since buying one of the new mid-2009 MacBook Pros. It had never happened with my previous early-2008 MacBook Pro.
Additionally, the detect displays functionality is not triggered as it should be by dis/connecting the display. I have to manually “detect displays“ every time. Very frustrating, and pretty weird.

  • W520 wont display 2 external monitors and laptop screen

    Hi everyone.
I have previously had 2 external monitors working as well as my W520's screen, so 3 screens in total.  A few days ago  Windows 7 crashed with a BSOD and now I can only connect 2 screens at once.
Everyhting seems to be connected correctly as far as i can tell
This is the error I now get when trying to activate the 3rd screen.
Is there another driver I need to install to reenable the laptop monitor to work along witht the two external screens?
    Any help is appreciated.
Like the song says... 'you dont know what you've got till its gone'.
    Thanks

Why isn't the second Acer external monitor (2 of 2) "checked" as well?
Don't you want all three screens in use??
How DID you have your monitors connected before the BSOD problem caused your current situation?  Do you have the two Acer monitors daisy-chained via DP from the DP connector out of the K1000M on the laptop?  And you were also using the laptop screen as the third?  If so, I'd think that all three boxes would need to be checked in nVidia Control Panel.
