External seagate drive not showing

Hi. My 1TB seagate external drive has just suddenly started to not show up. The problems the same on my MBP and my old stalk imac. I've had this problem before with a la cie drive. Is there any way to recover the files at least? or better still repair the drive?
Thanks
Iz

Hi lz,
Run Repair Disk on it.
1. Connect the external HD to the MBP.
2. Open Disk Utility on the MBP.
3. Select the external HD in the left pane. If it does not show up, try unplugging it and plugging it back in. It may mount at some point.
4. Click Repair Disk at bottom of main window.
5. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior, or the directory could be damaged beyond repair, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself).
If the HD won't mount at all, try a different cable and a different port. Sometimes the bridge circuit in an external enclosure can die, so I would also try the HD in a different enclosure and try a different HD in that enclosure. That should tell you if it's the HD or the enclosure.

Why is my External Hard Drive not showing in Aperture 3.6 Import?

Only my computer hard drive is and I want to import from an external drive.  I have always been able to until I updated to Aperture 3.6 and Yosemite.
I had the same problem. On the folders on the drive with the Aperture library did show in the Import panel. After I clicked the computer icon in the upper left corner of the Import panel, suddenly all drives appeared.
You can also try to drag the folder you want to import into the Import panel, to point the file chooser to the drive.

  • External Hard Drive/Not Showing Up on Desktop

I have a G4, running OS X 10.2.8 and recently my kids deleted some important data. So--we bought an external hard drive (WD MyBook 160 GB Essential Edition, which says on the box that it runs 10.2.8 and higher).
We took the external hard drive and the computer to a reputable repair place, the guy there took the hard drive out and using a G6 system, restored what he could to the external hard drive.
We bring it home, plug it in, and the computer is not reading the new external hard drive. I did check in disk utility, and it shows up as a greyed out item on the disk utility.
The external hard drive does show up when hooked up to my husband's office PC.
Any ideas as to why this is happening and how to correct it?
    Thanks, Ruth

OK, I figured it out (in case anyone else needs to know) with this information from the Western Digital site:
Macintosh Operating System 10.3.x or earlier will only recognize FAT32 partitions that are smaller than 128-gigabytes. Multiple FAT32 partitions smaller than 128-gigabytes will need to be created in order for Macintosh Operating System 10.3.x or earlier to recognize the partitions. You will need to use a Windows based computer to create FAT32 partitions, as Macintosh does not have the ability to create them.
Macintosh Operating System 10.4.x or later can recognize FAT32 partitions over 128-gigabytes.

  • External Hard Drives not showing

I have 2 external hard drives connected using FW 800, a Western Digital 500TB & a Seagate 500TB. The Western Digital has a habit of freezing and the last time this happened I powered down the iMac. When I re started the iMac neither external hard drive is showing on the desk top what's happening and how do I cure this?

    HI MIke,
To start with if your forum profile is correct you need to update your system softare to 10.5.8. Go here and install the v10.5.8 Combo Update
Also, in the Finder from the Menu Bar click Finder/Preferences and select the General tab.
Select the 2nd button and relaunch the Finder.

  • My external hard drive not showing up

    Hello,
My external hard drive is not showing up on my desktop. I went to finder & preferences>general and made sure I checked "show these items" and checked hard drives. I even unchecked it because I have 2 other external hard drives. When I checked the hard drive box the other 2 hard drives appeared but the third hard drive did not. The hard drive not showing up on my desk top does show up when I double click my system hard drive & can be opened from there, but I want to see it on my desk top. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Music from external hard drive not showing up

I am new to using a mac. I have had an iphone for almost a year so I am catching on quickly to my macbook but this problem has stumped me and all my mac using friends.
I have a 500gb seagate external hard drive aswell as a new 500gb seagate internal.
I transferred all my music from an old ipod onto the external hard drive. There is about 50gb of music.
When I plug my external into my pc desktop I can see the music folder organized into subfolders with files inside that are encoded unless they are opened in itunes. My pc doesn't have enough internal memory to open and store my music library so I have just left it on the hard drive. When I plug the hard drive into my macbook it will show the music folder as having 50gb but when the folder is opened, none of the subfolders or files are visable.
I went ahead and dragged the folder from my harddrive onto my macbook desktop. It took about an hour to transfer all the files but now the folder is sitting on my desktop and when I open it, it is empty. If i look in the folders info, it says it has the 50gb. If i try to drag and drop it into itunes nothing happens. If I drag and drop it into the itunes music folder, it will go there but will not show up on itunes.
I'm stumped and no longer eligable for apples telephone support as I bought this macbook from a friend. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Please use extreme lay terms as i'm just learning the lingo...thx)

incase anyone is wondering, i figured out how to get the files onto the macbook. I transferred the files from my hard drive onto a flashdrive using my pc and when i plugged the flashdrive into the macbook the files showed up and could be dragged and dropped into itunes! yay!

  • External Hard Drives not showing up in Premiere Pro Media Browser

Hello All!  My external drive(s) aren't showing up in Premiere Pro... and yes, they were working just fine yesterday.  The internal drives both show up, but the external drive(s) aren't accessible.
At first I thought that perhaps it was the drive (a new USB 3.0 that worked yesterday)... I tried changing the cable, changing the drive, even changing from a USB 3.0 drive to a FW 800 drive.  All show up on my desktop, as well as in other applications (including After Effects, and "other" editing platforms) etc... but none are showing up in Premiere Pro.
FWIW, I tried in both Premiere Pro CC as well as Premiere Pro CS6.  I have tried rebooting the computer, creating new projects, holding down the option key while starting Premiere, using Digital Rebellion's CS Repair... all to no avail.  Any thoughts?
My system is a MacBook Pro (late 2011), 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB Ram, running Mac OS X 10.8.5
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

  • External hard drive not showing up on AFP server

    hi
i have successfully connected a couple of times to a firewire external hard drive connected to my dad's iMac over the internet (AFP server) for the purpose of backing up some files, but now it doesn't show up at all as a volume when i connect to his iMac through finder/go/connect to server. i don't believe that any settings were changed, so don't understand why it isn't showing up. currently when i get info on the drive 'shared folder' is checked, everyone has permission to read and write and 'ignore ownership on this volume' is checked, and file sharing is enabled in system preferences/sharing.
does anyone have any ideas of what i can do to get the drive to show up again?
    thanks

My External Hard Drive with my Time Machine Backups on it are no longer showing up on my Macbook. The disk shows up on disk utility. Also when I boot into Recovery Mode and click on restore from Time Machine Backups my backups are listed.
I've tried to erase the disk and start fresh, but Disk Utility will not unmount the disk.

Choose Preferences from the Finder menu, click on the Desktop and Sidebar tabs, and check the boxes for it.

sorry for the late reply but it is usb and yes I tried everything from checking in finder prefrences and also disk utility. Funny thing is it shows up on disk utlity but not on my desktop.
    USB or Firewire? USB
Does the drive show up in System Information on the
    appropriate bus? yes
This may be obvious, but you do realize nothing will show on
desktop if no disk is inserted? I do know this much
Also, in Finder prefrences, do you have Cds and DVDs checked

    still nothing

  • External Hard Drive not showing up on my Mac Book Pro

My WD 1TB hard drive is not showing up anywhere on my computer. It use to simply pop up on my background. 1 minute is was working and I unplugged it then i plugged back in to transfer more data over I forgot about and it wouldn't show up. I've also checked disk utilities and dont see it there. I've tried plugging in to other macs with the same issue. Any  help would be greatly appreciated. I have about 800 gigs of photos on this and dont want to lose it!

SInce you said " I've also checked disk utilities and dont see it there. I've tried plugging in to other macs with the same issue. "
That would indicate a problem with the external drive.
    - Have you tried another cable?
    - Can you hear the drive spin?
    - Do lights light on the drive?
    - If you go to About this Mac>System Report>Hardware>USB is the drive and/or enclosure listed?

  • External Hard Drive not showing in my computer

I have an external hard drive that im trying to connect to my computer with usb2.0 and it doesn't show up in my computer.  I can see it in Disk Management and it says its Online but doesn't assign a letter to it.  I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64bit.
I have 2 internal drives.  I have tried assigning the backup drive to different letters and that doesn't seem to work.  Any ideas???

    Hi,
I understand that the external USB hard drive doesn’t show in Windows Explorer but detected in Disk Management.
To resolve this kind of issue, I would like to propose the following suggestions:
    1.
Go to Device Manager, uninstall the USB hard drive,
scan for the hardware change and let Windows automatically re-install driver for your device.
    2.
Open Registry Editor, navigate to the following item:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices
Find if your device is registered and assigned a letter.
As a work around, I suggest you accessing the external hard drive via a Command Prompt, copy out the data, then format the hard drive.
    1)
Click Start, type: cmd in the Search bar.
    2)
Right Click cmd and click Run as Administrator.
    3)
    Type the following command:
    Copy [source] [destination]
    Best Regards
    Dale

  • External hard drive not showing in finder or disk utility

1TB WD external hard drive is not showing in finder sidebar, destop, or disk utility. I have checked and all the preferences are ticked. The disk itself is showing a light and making a whirring sound during start up after being plugged into the power.

Three different external drives, on 2 different MacBook Pros (different ages).  One drive with internal power, 2 through USB.  Also have a new Solid State External Drive and it does work.  The were all working before upgrade to Yosemite.

  • External hard drives not showing in disk utility

When I connect a new Eagle/Consus W-Series external hard drive enclosure to my 15" PB, the hard drive doesn't show-up in the left hand pane of the Disk Utility window. The only thing that shows is the drive in the PB. The hard drive in the enclosure is a WD SATA and is connected via USB cable. The same thing happens, or doesn't happen, when I'm connected via ethernet to my G5 2.3GHz Dual Core: when I open Disk Utility on the PB, the drive on the G5 doesn't show. What I'm trying to attempt is to mirror/clone Tiger from my PB onto the new, to me, G5 using SuperDuper.

Hi, Bob. I obviously didn't understand the situation properly, and now that I realize that, I'm afraid I still don't.
When the G5 is connected, via ethernet to my PB, the hard drive does not show-up in the PB's disk utility pane.
The G5 doesn't have a hard drive in it now, is that correct? So why connect it via Ethernet to the Powerbook?
If you're trying to clone the Powerbook's hard drive onto the G5's drive inside the external enclosure, all that needs to be connected is the external enclosure to the Powerbook, via USB cable. The G5 itself isn't involved in that process at all. When the G5's drive is in the enclosure and connected to the Powerbook, does it appear in Disk Utility on the Powerbook? If not, see my previous suggestions, with the exception of my comment about it not working with either computer.
If the SATA hard drive doesn't appear on the Powerbook's desktop or in Disk Utility when it is in the G5 and the computers are properly networked via Ethernet, recheck your sharing settings: the G5's drive must be shared to be visible to the Powerbook. In that mode, you may not be able to clone the Powerbook's drive to the other one, because the drive in the G5 is being used to run the G5. But if the G5's drive is partitioned, you should be able to clone the Powerbook's drive, via Ethernet, to a partition other than the one which contains the OS that's running the G5.
While the hard drive is in the external enclosure, I can hear it spinning, and am assuming that all the connections are working properly.
If the drive spins, you can be sure it's getting power, and that's good. But you can't safely conclude from that that any or all of the data connections are working properly; in fact the evidence suggests the contrary.
In short, there may be not one but two problems at work here: incorrect sharing settings when the two computers are networked, and a bad cable, connection, or enclosure when the drive is connected to the Powerbook via USB.
EDIT: Let me also add that if the only Tiger installer discs you have are the ones that came with the Powerbook, then having copies of that Tiger installation on both of your computers would be a violation of the software license that accompanied those discs, which entitles you to have Tiger installed on only one computer at a time. If that's the case, you should really buy a retail Tiger installer disc to use on the G5.
