External Speakers almost no volume internal spks. work perfect

Hi,
my external speakers or headphones have almost no volume anymore since yesterday. It used to work for months but after a reboot and unplugging and re-plugging the external speakers to the headphone jack of the MacBook Pro it doesn't work anymore. Music and other sounds can almost not be heard, but as soon I plug out the external speaker and go back to the internal speakers it works perfect.
No red light digital stuff issue.
Just stopped working.
Any ideas ?
Thanks in advance,
Frank

OK , I think I can close this one.
I very likely killed the output Operation Amplifier which amplifies the signal vom dem D/A - Converter for the headphone jack by accidentally plugging in the outgoing amplified Subwoofer to Satellite-Speaker cable ( 8 Watts ) into the headphone jack which very likely blew up the Amplifier of the headphone jack.
The internal speakers are not harmed at all and all the other functions are still working without any flaw.
The service people told me that replacing the logic board would cost me between 900 and 1000 EURO which makes no sense because the MacBook Pro ist about 18 months old now and has probably an actual value of about 1000 EURO.
Well anyway - I wait another 10 months replace it with a new MacBook Pro - and I can pretty much life with the internal speakers or I use my iPhone.
SO: Next time watch out what you plugin where - LESSON learned

  • Sound from external speakers, but not from internal speakers

I tried searching as much as I could and couldn't find an answer....
I always use my function keys to turn my volume up and down. It has worked fine until today, then all of a sudden, my internal speakers wont turn up or down when I use my function keys. The volume window comes up and below the volume level bar there is a circle with a line through it (like no smoking sign, but without the cigarette)which I guess leaves my internal speakers on mute.
So i came home, and plug in my logitech speakers, and I can control the volume fine from my function keys. Then I disconnect my logitech speakers from my computer and I get the same problem with my internal speakers.
I probably confused everyone but I guess a short version is my function keys wont turn on my internal speakers, and when I have external speakers plugged in, everything is normal.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Brendan

If you look in the headphone jack, can you see a glowing red light? This happened to many people, it was an issue where a switch got tripped to make the computer to think that a pair of headphones or external speakers were plugged in. Try inserting a toothpick inside the headphone jack and gently probing around in there to try and turn off the switch.
    See here.
And by the way, you don't need to bump topics that are only three hours old.

  • External Speakers on Macbook Air have stopped working after update.

    Hi
I downloaded an update (10.6.8) for my Macbook Air and my external speakers stopped working. I have checked system preferences and nothing is muted and it can detect the speakers but nothing comes through.
If i plug in headphones sound comes through the headphones fine but without them nothing comes through the speakers.
I have gone back to 10.6.7 and the speakers have worked again so i know it is not a hardware issue but upon updating to 10.7 i am getting issues with my speakers again.
Any ideas other then going back to 10.6.7?
Oh and interesting behaviour if i am playing a sound and plug in my headphones the speakers work for a second or two before sound switches over to the headphones.

  • External Speakers and Laptop Volume

I typically keep the volume of the laptop to about 50% when using external speakers. But I'm wondering if there is some rule of thumb when using external speakers as to the maximum level of volume of the actual laptop. Is there some level that you should not exceed?

One that blows the external speakers out:->
Sorry I could not resist that. There is no rule of thumb that I know of. I use amplified external speakers and do like you. I run at about fifty percent on the laptop and then use the external volume control on the speakers.

  • External speakers on HP Pavilion P6204Y stopped working

Speakers work on another PC, upgraded driver, show that speakers are not plugged in-sometimes show as plugged in, ran all the tests shown on the PC, shows volume thru speakers but no sound. Tried CD, internet radio and TV no luck.
Not a computer whiz any help greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
What speakers are you trying to use?
Plug the speakers in and then go to the Realtek Sound Control Panel. Are the speakers set as the default audio output device?  Is the back audio input port a dark green? If no, then try wiggling the cable and see if the speakers show up.
When the speakers show as being plugged in, do you also have a headset plugged in?

  • How can I increase the volume on my iPhone 4s using external speakers?

I used to have the iPhone 4 and I played my tunes through my PC external speakers (like using a pair of headphones). The maximum volume was extremely loud, and I never put it on full blast.
Recently, I upgraded to the iPhone 4s, and I've noticed a huge difference in the maximum volume - it is about 30% quieter than my old iPhone 4, and it sounds incredibly quiet while I'm using my external speakers, even if the speakers are at full.
I've also noticed that there is a Max Volume Warning which shows white/yellow/red volume bars when I turn the volume up - also my iPhone 4 never had. I believe there is a EU Volume Limit on iPhones, but I cannot understand why there is such a huge difference between the 4 and 4s.
Which also bugs me, is that my friend has recently upgraded to the iPhone 4s too, and he doesn't have the same problem as me. I tested his iPhone using my external speakers and the volume was much louder than mine. So we checked over all of his settings and compared them with mine, and they are ALL the same. Plus, neither of our iPhones are Jailbroken.
Does anyone has a solution to this? I can't find an answer anywhere..............
    Please help!!!

The volume buttons are on the left hand side of your device.
    Top one is increase
    Bottom one is decrease.
Once they are at the maximum/minimum that is all you can do.
    Good Luck

  • External Speakers Not Working with Snow Leopard

I installed Snow Leopard. Prior to the installation my external speakers, plugged into the headphone jack, worked great. Now, after installing SL, my external speakers and my headphones will not work. Any ideas?

I don't know what the issue was. I muted and then took mute off, still no external speakers or headphones. So, I just restarted. I guess whatever the problem was just fixed itself. Now I have external speakers and headphones.

  • External speakers on/off on/off

I recently had to wipe my hard drive and I installed Tiger. Now when I begin iTunes, when I adjust the volume or when I switch songs, my external speakers and harman kardon woofer stop working and I get switched to the internal speakers. Then when I open system preferences and simply select sound - the external setting returns and the woofer kicks in. Any thoughts. Never had this issue until Tiger "upgrade". I also can't reload Click N' Design cd label program.
    Thanks

    Hello triplec73,
It sounds like this may be a user issue in OS X.
You might want to pose the question here.

  • Crackling external speakers

External & internal speakers have worked perfectly for several years. This morning I unplugged the external speakers to set the internal speakers to a lower volume so that the startup sound wouldn't be so loud. When I went to plug the external speakers back in, I plugged the jack into the "Analog audio in" "Audio in/optical audio" port (that's what Mac Help calls it).
When I realized my mistake, I plugged the jack into the headphone port. Since then the external speakers crackle in a pulsating rhythm.
I tried another set of external speakers and it does the same thing.
I tried headphones and it does not happen. The sound is perfect.
I tried the internal speakers and they are perfect also.
Anyone have any idea what happened AND what I should do about it?

The problem lasted about two days and went away on it's own. It's a mystery to me. The only things I did were turning the computer and speakers on in the morning and turning them off at night. I'm not going to loose any sleep over it as long as it's working. I'll also be more careful in the future about what port I plug my speakers into!

  • No sound from external speakers on mac mini  late 2012 since installing more ram

    Hello folks,
I have just added 16 Gb of ram to my new Mac Mini now for some reason i cant get the external speakers to work, the internal one is fine? I have checked the external speakers on my netbook where they work fine. As i have only had my Mac a littlle while I am not sure if the external speaker was working before the ram upgrade.
On the System Preferences there is no external speaker option only internal?
    Everything else is working fine,
Any help form the Community will be much appreciated.

your connection might be faulty try jiggling it or twisting it gently while in the headphone jack.
I stress gently since there are optical outputs in it that you don't want to scratch. if you want true surround get a receiver that supports sound through hdmi or Toslink optical Audio, the latter I know your imac supports.

  • I have a MacBook Pro. When I go to system preference, the external speakers option does not appear in the Input tab. Help?

I have a MacBook Pro. When I go to system preferences, the external speakers option does not appear on the input tab and, of course, the external speakers do not work. Help?

When you plug headphones in, or external speakers, where it states "internal speakers", it will rename that "headphones", say. Unless you are running an external sound card.

Even I have the same issue with my Newly purchased nokia lumia 720... Sometime the volume down buttons works perfectly and with time is doesn't work at all is this a software issue... i am facing this since i have downloaded an audio update.... i m tired of resetting the settings i am tired visiting service centers, as they are asking me to leave my phone for 15-20 days as the part is not available with them and my question is. if there is a hardware issue then is should stop working but in my case sometimes it works as perfect as the day i bought the device and sometimes it doesn't work at all. Right click your volume icon in the notification area and select "volume control options". From there, you should be able to select the external speakers.
    I hope that helps!

  • Cannot get internal speakers to work. Only works with headphones or external speakers?????

All of a sudden my MacBook Pro internal speakers are not working. The status bar at the top of the screen shows everything bold and in black print but now the speaker volume symbol shows just the gray color and will not allow me to adjust the volume. However, when I plug in headphones or external speakers the symbol becomes bold and black the way it should and everything works just fine??? How do I correct this?

Go step by step and test.
1.Plug in and  remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    2. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
        Do this twice
    3. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Choose the method for:     "Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    Best.
