External Speakers, Apple TV and MBP

I hope someone can help me.  I've got 2 issues that are probably related having to do with audio output.  #1: when I connect bluetooth enabled external speaker to iTunes on my MacBook Pro, the speaker broadcasts sounds from my computers internal built in speakers and #2; when I use my MBP while watching Apple TV, regardless of the audio output device, my laptop seems to be talking to the TV volume.  While I'm typing on the computer, the sound on the TV goes up and down.  If anyone has ideas about how to sever the audio relationships between these various devices so they don't all affect one another, I'd be grateful.  Thanks.

For anyone still following this post.  I had the same question and was disappointed that Apple hasn't fixed this, yet.  Then, I found this site, http://www.getporthole.com/ , and am currently using the software.  It seems to work just fine.  I've tested on my Mac running Mavericks and my sister-in-law's mac running 10.6.8.
Hope it helps out.  Maybe Apple will build this in one day.

  • Apple tv and mbp

im on my mbp and want to watch a podcast on apple tv but when i use apple tv's remote it's not also controling apple tv but its also hooked up to my mbp... however thats a nifty feature but is ther a way i can turn it off from my mbp for now?

I am sure that I have done that correctly. Apple TV and MBP states that a remote has been paired, but still both work on both devices. Is it possible that both remotes have the same ID (by coincidence)?

  • HT1555 Two remotes - Both still work with Apple TV and MBP despite pairing

I have a MBP (early 2011 13") and Apple TV. Therefore, I paired one remote with my MBP and the other remote with Apple TV. Both parings have been successfull (chain icon) but still both remotes can be used on both devices. How can I resolve this issue? (and no, I don't want to disable the IR on my MBP)
Is it possible that the two remotes have by coincidence the same ID?

  • No sound from external speakers with music and apps on 3gS

I'm having sound problems with my 3gs.  I've read quite a few posts about this and have come to a dead end.
My problem is that there is no sound from apps of music etc from the external speaker but there is from phone calls.
    This is what I've tried:
    The silent button is off.
I've put the headphone in and out many times to know avail.  (I don't consider this to be the problem as when the jack is taken out the volume bar dissapears)
I've blown down the headphone jack.
I've cleaned out the usb socket with a toothpick
    I've done a restart
I've done a reset and a full reset with newly downloaded firmware.
To me it's acting as if it is docked into an external speaker.
    Any other suggestions.
    Darren

Is the iPhone able to still play ringtones and songs via headphones? If so, your iPhone probably thinks it is connected to a dock. I had this problem and while I don't suggest it, I messed rather vigorously with the dock/cable port at the bottom before the volume reappeared. I hope this helps.

  • Apple TV doesn't show up in iTunes when AirPort Express is running at the same time - Can't play music on both Apple TV and AirPort Express speakers together

    Hi there!
I am trying to play music from my Mac on multiple speakers, Apple TV and AirPort Express. But as soon as the AirPort Express station is plugged in, the Apple TV does not show up in iTunes anymore. When trying the same using iPhones Remote app it works perfectly.
Does anyone of you have an idea why iTunes does not show me both Apple TV AND AirPort Express? (it has nothing to to with the IP adress as the adresses are different).
    Thanks for any help!

As my english isn't too good I made a screenshot to show you what I mean.
As you can see in the image below iTunes only shows me the computer speakers and the AirPort Express. But at the bottom you can see that iTunes actually recognized 3 different speaker (Mac, AirPort, Apple TV 2). Why does the Apple TV not show up in the multiple speakers window? Any ideas?

  • How do I connect Apple TV to external speakers and my TV?

I just bought an Apple TV for my studio apartment and have it connected to my TV via HDMI, and use AirPlay to stream my music and videos. Video works great, but the my TV's internal speakers are low quality. So, I would like to have my audio come from external speakers (which I have not bought yet), for the following 2 scenarios:
Listening to music via AirPlay, preferably without having to turn my TV on.
Watching videos on my TV, with the audio coming through my external speakers rather than the TV speakers
I see my Apple TV has an Optical Audio (Toslink) port, but the salesperson at the nearby electronics store said none of their speakers have Toslink cables, only 3.5 mm (or USB). The only solution I found is an AV receiver box that has optical input but costs hundreds of dollars. I am looking for something cheaper and am willing to settle for "pretty good" sound quality.
Is there another way to get this to work?
This article recommends using a digital audio converter (DAC) to connect the Apple TV to a stereo amplifier. This seems like it would satisfy scenarios (1) and (2) above.
Also, I found this "Toslink to 3.5 mm adapter" for a few bucks; could I just plug that into my Apple TV and then connect it to any speakers (like computer speakers) with 3.5mm input?
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Rex,
Since the toslink is optical, the 3.5mm adapter will not work for you as it is only ment as a conversion to a mini-toslink cable. Your first option of using the DAC, is in my opinion the best and perhaps only way to get audio out without going to a fancy amp or tuner first.
One option that I'm considering is the Bose Solo TV sound system. It might set you back about 4-Grant's, but I generally enjoy the sound of bose for most music/tv/movie purposes; and it has a direct optical audio input that you can run either from your tv or your ATV. Whatever audio you're sending to your TV via the HDMI, should go to these speakers through your HDTV's toslink output with equal digital clarity.
I've read a few other posts on the apple discussion forum which lead me to believe that the optical output of the ATV might not work so well after the 5.2 update... so whatever I do, it won't be JUST for use with the ATV.

  • Can I use my monitor and external speakers with apple tv

I have an extra computer monitor (DVI input) and external speakers (3.5mm male audio jack.) Is there  some combination of adapters that I can use to hook up an apple tv to them in order to stream from netflix, and my itunes library?

no but you can get tons of solutions where you connect something to your tv's minijack headset connector and then it wireless transfer the audio signal to a headset
there are both bluetooth solutions belkin have one I use and there are also solutions where the headset is included and they use their own custom protocol
but mind you there is no way to keep such setups in sync in terms of video and audio so if the system is poor in quality or pre-process the audio signal too much it cause audio and visuals to get out of sync

Using Airport Express for External speakers and Apple TV.  When I'm on MAC computer adn using internet sound from Internet does not go through external speakers.  Instead it comes out of Mac computer speaker.  Why?

As far as I know, the Airport Express only transmits sounds via Itunes. So every other sound (internet, but also incoming mail) will be coming out of your mac instead of your external speakers.

  • External speakers not working with iMac and Lion

I have a dual core imac with Lion and external speakers I just bought from Apple. I cannot get them to work with itunes or anything else on the imac. Can anyone tell me what to do? They work well with an ipod touch, but not the iMac.

Hmmm. I plugged the speakers into the headphone jack. they are  the Audyssey Lower East Side Media Speakers. When I hoty option on the menu bar, headphones are checked as output. When I go to system preferences and check output, all it says is "headphone port." Still no change.

  • Mac mini - built-in speakers and external speakers?

    Hello
Is it possible to use built-in speaker and external speakers the same time?
I have connected Mini to my sound system, but sometimes I listen to the radio and would like to use the built-in speaker.
How can I do such thing without unplugging external speakers?
    Regards
    Przemek

    You can't.
There are 5.1 speaker systems that work with Macs that have built-in SPDIF ports:

(the M-Audio link on this tip is to a no longer available product)
And there is 3 channel based speaker adapter here:

And while hard to find, you may be able to also get this Sonica Theatre USB Card somewhere:

  • I have lost all audio on both my internal and external speakers.

I have lost audio on both my internal and external speakers.  I have checked the System Preferences when my external speakers are plugged in it is acknowledged.  When using internal speakers they are also acknowledged.  Sound volume on Preferences is on and fully high.  The sound buttons on the keyboard  do not work and the sound level is now locked in at full sound and cannot be adjusted using the keys.  The System Preferences shows that Mute is now checked and I cannot uncheck it.  What should I do to get my sound back both internally and externally?

    Repair permissions & restart.
Check your settings in the Audio Midi app which is located in the Utilities folder.

    =====================
    Repairing the mysteriously muted Mac
The background on the issue is that there’s a small sensor switch inside the headphone port. When you insert a headphone jack, the sensor understands what's what and changes the sound output setting to Headphones. If you insert a jack for digital audio output, the device changes to Digital Out. When you remove the jack completely, it should read Internal Speakers.
The spirits tell me that there’s a very good chance that you recently had something jacked into this port—a set of headphones or a cable leading to powered speakers, for example. When you removed the jack, something in the port prevented the sensor from tripping correctly. That’s why you see Digital Out instead of internal Speakers.
The solution is to force the sensor to do its job. The safest way to do that is to simply run a jack in and out of the port a few times. Much of the time, this takes care of the problem by correctly tripping the sensor. If that doesn’t work, there may be gunk in the port. Before turning to more invasive techniques, get a can of compressed air, attach the small tube that fits the nozzle, and blast a few shots of air into the port. With any luck, that should dislodge the gunk and the port will operate as it should.
If that doesn’t work, find a foam-tipped swab that fits (electronics shops generally carry them), dip it in rubbing alcohol, and gently insert it into the headphone port in an attempt to wipe away any stubborn gunk. I recommend foam rather than cotton swabs because the cotton variety might leave threads behind. (This same technique works well with misbehaving headphone ports on devices such as iOS devices.)
It's possible that gunk has nothing to do with it. Rather, it may be that the switch just needs a subtle nudge. If a jack or swab doesn't work, I've heard of people successfully resetting it with a deft poke of a toothpick.

  • 3GS external speakers no longer work and significantly diminished recognization of carrier signal

Recently my IPhone 3GS has, through events unknown to me, stopped emitting any sound from the external speakers (sound quality is perfectly fine from headset). Also, signal strength has become almost entirely diminished, and most often "No Carrier" is displayed (have an additional IPhone 3GS on same firmware without any problems, and is actually a few months older). Not sure if the phone is still covered under warranty, since the weblink is not functioning. Was wondering, even though it may not be under Apple's "Limited Warranty" due to duration of time since purchase, will an exchange for a refurb or possibly a service request be compensated? Just wondering what my options are, especially since I am under a business plan through AT&T and have multiple IPhones for coworkers/"friends" including 3-3GS's and a recent IPhone 4 (not to mention my personal IPod Classic for my evening jogging).

If its under warranty thenmaybe Apple will fix it, they are very easy to come by search "iPhones 3gsdock connector" on eBay and this will show you exactly how to take the phone apart to get to the dock connector, I have brought one from eBay today as I have been having antenna problems with my phone hopefully that will fix it, anyway here is the guide to the iPhone disassembly.

3Gs' are very easy to takeapart all you need is a small Philips screw driver and a suction pad.
    Hope it goes well

Though I have doubts for success, you might try a SMC reset.  It can do no harm.  Otherwise, barring suggestions from others, the Apple Store or qualified repair facility is the last option.
