External speakers/headphones won't work

I cannot get my iMac to send sound out the headphone jack either to headphones or to my Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX system. Several years, and iMacs, ago, I used these speakers without problem, but now I cannot get it to put sound out through anything but its own internal speakers. I'm running OS 10.8.3.
The Klipsch tech support thinks I need a driver from Apple. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Sometimes the Jack just gets messed up & sime have carefully used a wooden toothpic or such to fix it.
Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

• Headphones won,t work in the front pa

Hi all,
Sorry to disturb you again with this problem but I went through all the forums and even if tons of other people got the same problem, they never got any serious answer. So I'm trying again....
I own an Audigy 2 ZS card and my new headphones won't work in either green or pink connectors in the front of my computer case. I have no problem with speakers. My headphones work on other devices but no sound if I plug them in front of my computer.
Is there someone at Creative who can give us an answer to this problem? I bought my expensi've headphones only to play games on my computer, I would like them to work properly.
Please help "me" (or "us")
Thanks in advance.

Well,
Thanks for your fast answer. But do you mean that these 2 jacks are totally useless? If so, I'm wondering why they are there. That makes no sense. These jacks are there for headphones and micro. And by headphones, I guess we are talking about any kind of headphones.
And I guessed that these jacks were not directly linked to the audio card but I was sure that the mother board was the link between these in-line and the audio card.
Anyway, my only question is: "How come they put these jacks there if they are not linked to the audio card?"
Thanks

• External dvd drive won't work on USB macBook air

External dvd drive won't work on my macBook air usb port. It works on older versions of air and iMac.
Any ideas. Tried the left shift, control, option and power button sumultaniously, but did not work.

I know that no one has replied yet, but figured out the issue. I called Applecare and they couldn't figure it out, so sent me to a genuis at the Apple store. They too couldn't figure it out and told me that it was a firmware issue with the Toshiba dvd external drive. When I got home, I thought I would try one more thing. I hooked it up to a powered hub and it works perfectly. I'm not sure why no one else thought of it, but glad that I did.

• After using external speakers headphone jack no longer works

Hi, i plugged in some external speakers yesterday, the type that have two channel inputs (red and white) from my headphone jack. the speakers didnt seem to work, i thought it was the speakers that were broken, but now nothing will work from the headphone jack. the computer recognises they are there but there is no sound at all apart from slight fuzziness. it is nothing to do with the red light connection as ive had this problem before and its not that this time. i have reset vram and done the SMC reset too, but none of this has worked. the internal speakers work fine. nothing is muted, nothing is unbalanced. i have read everything single thread about similar problems and tried all the solutions i can find. can anyone help!!?? :'.(

Replacing a faceplate on an 83xx device is not a simple operation. It is not meant to be disassembled by the consumer. This is a risk you take of disassembling a working device. You may be able to disassemble and fix but there is no way for us to know whether you can fix it or not.

• [ Windows 7 64-bit ] External speakers / headphones not working

Hi,
I just upgraded from a MacBook 13.3" (Late 2008) to the brand new MacBook Pro 13.3" (Mid 2010). Sound wasn't a problem in Windows 7 64-bit on the old MacBook, but the new MacBook has somehow messed up the line-out signal to my external speakers (and headphones).
I obviously already tested everything in OSX and didn't find a problem. The internal speakers also work fine in Windows 7 64-bit, but as soon as I connect external speakers (and headphones) in Windows 7 64-bit there's just silence. The speakers are powered, and the playback sound device information (and the volume bars) suggest that all sound devices are working normally, i.e. Speakers, Headphones and +Digital Audio (S/PDIF)+. The chipset is Cirrus Logic CS4206A (AB 13).
Has anyone else come across this issue, and if so, how did you solve the problem?

Hi,
After googling for two days, I finally found a workaround for my macbook pro 15'' (macbookpro5,3).
I had sound on Windows 7 64bits (with volume ok) and without the red light problem, but i couldn't hear anything from my tv with sound cable connected to headphones. My current version of bootcamp is 3.1 (with all drivers installed from it).
I tried all kind of things (drivers from vista64, xp, bootcamp 2.2, realtek, other versions of cirrus drivers, etc.) with no luck. THE SOLUTION FOR ME WAS TO INSTALL LATEST DRIVERS FROM NVIDIA (YES, graphics drivers) OVERRIDING THOSE FROM BOOTCAMP 3.1. After macbook restart, MY EXTERNAL SPEAKERS STARTED WORKING!!!
Hope this helps to anyone.

• External speakers are no longer working, why?

Ive been Apple Airplay and now my external speakers no longer work on my imac, it is something to do with Airplay or is there something that I need to fix or reinstall? Look forward to hearing from you. TIA

Hi,
There are no external speakers in Sound Preferences/ Output, only internal speakers, or if you plug something into the output port, Headphones, or a sound interface device. Hold down the Option key and click on the sound icon in the top menu bar on your display and you will see the options for output and input.
Have you got an audio system plugged into the output port? If it is not working, check your cables.

• Please Help My External Speakers Are'n't Working

I am using a powerbook g4 (titanium) and OS 10.4.10. For some reason, my headphone jack plays sound when I plug in headphones but not when I plug in my speakers. Bought new pair of speakers and they still do not get sound ( Is this a coincidence?) I even bought i-mic for using the usb port and I still don't get sound from my external speakers. I've reset the pram and made sure the audio/midi settings are correct. This is too strange....Please someone help.

Sorry, I meant aluminum powerbook not titanium. Also, my headphones work when I plug in the i-mic but not the external speakers.

• External back up won't work on Yosemite Macbook Pro

I downloaded OS X Yosemite a couple of days ago, works well. I went to back up my Macbook Pro on the external hard drive I have always used and it won't work, it just keeps saying preparing back up. It is a WD My Passport hard drive. I tried removing the hard drive and selecting it to use a a back up but still wouldn't work. It has worked fine every time before downloading Yosemite. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm playing music files using Windows Media player. Also, I tried other media players with the same results. The headphones work great when they are plugged into the X-Fi sound card port at the rear of computer, and they also work when plugged into a headphone jack that is included with the wired remote volume control that came with my Creative 5. speakers. I think I have everything set correctly. I've tried several settings to see if it made any difference. For example; mute speakers when headphones plugged in (on & off), make headphones the default speaker selection, tried the three different sound modes (gaming, entertainment, creation). I tried disabling the onboard sound and that didn't work. I've followed all of the troubleshooting guides provided by Creative and they failed to solve this issue. I read a lot of headphone not working posts, but couldn't find anything that sounded like it might work for me, or anything that I haven't already tried.

. Bad power connector to the Fatalty I/O dri've. If the I/O dri've had a function light on it, I would of know it wasn't getting power. But anyway, those little computer voltage testers made just for molex plugs and other plugs work great and helped me find this problem with my power connector.

• My USB external hard disk won't work anymore after I updated to 10.4.10

As I said in title since it's quite urgent to me. ALL of my files is in my external hard drive. It's format as FAT or FAT32 I can't remember since I use it between mac and PC. More than that IT IS WORKING FINE UNDER PC. Before updating to Mac 10.4.10 I used my hard disk fine till I updated to this version. I plug in my usb port and after a hours it still won't be detected. I can find my hard disk in finder or desktop. I have tried plug my hard disk to other MacBook or Mac Pro but still won't work anymore. However it's working fine under PC or when I started my MacBKPRO as WindowsXP under bootcamp, my hard disk is working fine, too.
I have search this forum and seems someone have got the same problem as I face. I don't know what to do...and I feel so disappointed to Mac.

As Mac OS X has no known viruses in the wild, that leaves you with one of three possibilities.
1. When connected to the Windows machine, a virus has written over a critical boot block area which allows the drive to become crossplatform. Get the latest Windows virus detection software and make sure the drive is clean of Windows viruses.
2. The firmware that allows it to communicate driverless has become corrupted on the drive case. Replacing the drive case itself will eliminate that problem, as suggested earlier.
3. The directory damage is just enough that the boot block itself is damaged. Backup any critical data from the drive onto the Windows machine first, and run Alsoft Disk Warrior 4.0 to repair the directory and see if that works.
The fact that Mac OS X 10.3.9 won't read it basically eliminates this as a 10.4.10 problem. Only a boot block or firmware issue like this could make a drive not readable on one platform, but readable on another.
P.S. please note the nomenclature of Mac, versus MAC on this user tip, as it appears you haven't learned it:

• When using external speakers, they won't unmute

I am using a U530 Touch with Realtek HD Audio driver version 6.0.1.7535 and Windows 10 build 10240. When using external speakers, everything works fine, except when I mute speakers they will not unmute without unplugging the 3.5 mm speaker jack and plugging it back in to the unit. Using the laptop's internal speakers does not produce the same proplem (mute/unmute works fine). I have looked at every setting and find nothing, nor have I seen this problem reported in the forums. HELP!!!

Firstly how do I know if this is a 1st or 2nd generation shuffle? Bought in May at Palo Alto Store but there doesn't seem to be anything on the packaging to tell me.
1st Gen shuffle was white, plastic, and shaped like a chewing gum package.
2nd Gen shuffle is aluminum, with a spring clip on the back and comes in silve and assorted colors...
When the shuffle is connected to the external speakers(bought at the same
time) it only plays about 5 songs and then stops.
Does it play through the earphones after this happens? Does it still have power or is the battery depleted after it stops playing?
What Brand & model are the speakers?

• External optical drive won't work on macbook pro retina.

Just had that happen to me.
First, run Disk Utility and see if the SuperDrive (it is an Apple SuperDrive isn't it?) is listed. Is the disk you inserted shown? If not, hold down the option key and click the Apple menu - choose System Information and when that shows up, choose USB. See if it's listed there. If it is but neither the drive nor the disk you inserted appears on the Desktop, the side bar of the Finder window, or Disk Utility, return it for a refund (if it's within 14 days of purchase) or a replacement. That's what I had to do a few hours ago and the replacement works as it should.
BTW, if you want the disk you inserted back, and pressing the trackpad as you reboot doesn't eject the disk, as a last resort run Terminal and enter (copy and paste the following)
/usr/bin/drutil eject
to try to force the disk to eject. It probably won't work (it didn't for me) but if it does, at least you get that disk back.

• My plug in speakers and headphones won't work in either headphone jacks

The headphone jack won't let my plug in speakers or headphone work. it will only let the built in speakers give out sound. i don't know if its broken or not.

Check the Audio Midi Setup Application in Applications -> Utilities. Make sure it is set for 48kHz. Higher frequencies frequently make audio unplayable. Some of the older updates would change the default frequency.

• My ipod will play sound through the speakers but headphones won't work?

I've tried a few different headphones in my ipod touch and none of them work. i've plugged the headphones into the computer and they all work, so that means it's a problem with the ipod itself.
is there anything i can do to fix it or is it just time to buy a new ipod?
It's a third genereation 32gb ipod touch that i've had for a little over a year. my friend had it for a while before that.

Go to system preferences/sounduotput and se if you can select from there, make sure volume is up and mute is not checked.
Try pluggung a set of head phones in and out several times
