External speakers making clicking sounds

Hi there, I need to know if anyone else has experienced this.
I have external speakers (studio speakers) hooked up in this way: Headphone jack on imac > rca inputs on digi002 rack > speakers through main outputs of digi (alt source for those who know the digi hardware). Now I only notice it when there's no music or anything playing but I hear a strange clicking sound. Almost like the sound of the hard drive when it clicks around (I used to hear it on my old macbook). I can llive with that but when I turn my iMac off for the night, the speakers make this terrible screaching sound.
Bear in mind that the speakers are fairly new, but I've used them enough to know this isn't a usual thing, and also that all of the volume levels are at very moderate levels, nothing is being blown to full anywhere.
Also good to note that muting the imac, or turning the monitor level on the digi002 have no effect on the clicking, it keeps happening as i click around (usually notice it when I'm moving around in the finder).
If anyone has any thoughts, I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks,
Sean

I always do unless I'm just paused between songs or whatever. I still notice it in those times. I'm just curious to know why it's happening

  • External speakers popping/clicking sounds on new 24" iMac 2,8 GHz

    Hello everyone,
got a new iMac from Gravis in Germany and connected it via it's headphone jack to my external stereo amplifier and it emits clicking or popping sounds whenever I switch the light in my room on or off. I've used the same connection for my Windows PC and that is working fine - no pops or clicks. The problem also exists if the Mac is muted. I can not hear clicks or popping noises when I disconnect the external speakers and use the in-built ones.
I brought my Mac back to Gravis and explained the problem and they replaced the audio board and cabling. No success. The popping and clicking is still there. Replacing the audio cable with a better shielded one does not fix the problem. Turning the power connectors of amplifier and/or Mac 180° does not help also.
The problem seems to come from a bad shielding inside the Mac or the built-in power supply that is not capable of filtering the power surges.
I've found some threads but I'm not sure whether or not these issues are related. Some people seem to think that these problems are software related.
    A workaround could be:
    1) getting an online USV that disconnects the Mac from the power cabling
    2) using the digital output (toslink)
    3) getting an external Firewire or USB sound device for sound output
Neither of these three workarounds are options for me - I still want a fix for my Mac.
Anyone here who has the same problems?
    vex

    Hi Elvinio,
I'm trying to solve this problem by getting rid of the analog connection between Mac and stereo. I've ordered a digital 7.1 receiver for 250 Euro and a toslink cable for 20 Euro.
Another solution would be an online UPS. That UPS disconnects the Mac from the direct power source and delivers "freshly generated" and "perfect" current without disturbances.
I think that those pops are power surges that are not filtered by the Apple Mac's power supply. My ordinary Windows PC is not subject to clicking and popping sounds - so I suppose that either the power supply or the internal shielding of the Mac is crap.
I hope that those ugly pops are gone when I establish the new connection...
I will post the results of my not too cheap work-around.
    Regards

  • My iphone is making clicking sounds when I try to slide it or tap on an app.  I can not make phone calls.

I hit something on my Iphone to make it start talking.  I also was not able to slide the screen up or down right or left.  I looked around on the web and found out how to stop it from talking,  Now it is making clicking sounds when I tap on an app.  The screen will still not slide. I have to tap on an app about 5 or six times to make it do anything.  Now I can't make a phone call because the keys will not respond when I tap on them.

i am sorry to say but there is no way to undo a software update to go back you have to go threw your phone provider and have then do a replacement on the phone and just not do the update. when they receive the phone they will send it off for testing and to have the bugs fixed

  • A305-S6916... external speakers static; low sound

I just purchased a Satelite A305-S6916 laptop. I'm wondering why I get massive static noise drowning out the sound I'm playing on my external speakers. I do plug my external speakers input to the headphone jack... right?? I tried control panel/additional options/Realtek HD Audio Manager -- clicked on 'Speakers' but i get the same results.
When I put headphones into the headphone jack, it works fine, but when i plug my external speakers in there, I get the static. I also know my speakers are not broken because it works fine for my other computer.
Could someone point me in the right direction to get this issue solved please. Thanks.

If the connection is not good or loose, then if there is any movement you can get static.  Even vibrations fromt eh table could cause static.  But you should notice this if you gently wiggle the headphone jack.
Also jack like this can be damaged if say the cable was bumped sideways to the way it plugs in.  Like if you move the computer and you hit something with the headphone plug while it is plugged in, that can cause damage.  So maybe it is damaged.
Although, there is the posibility that the headphone is not plugged in all they way.  The plug on the headphone should have a part that is much widder then the tip.  This should be flush against the jack.  I hope that makes sense.  If it wasn't plugged in all the way then you would get static and low volume or volume only out of one side of the two speakers.
    This signature left intentionally blank.

  • Home Button Making Clicking Sound

My iphone's home button is making a clicking sound when pressed. its not from the speaker of the phone but from the button itself. it works but it bugs me that it started clicking. is this normal? thanks

If the clicking beings to effect the performance of the button, then you should bring in the iPhone to your nearest Apple Store Genius Bar for a diagnosis. As long as there is no accidental damage, a defective button is covered under your one year warranty and/or your applecare extended coverage. Cosmetic issues do not make the unit eligible for in-warranty replacement.

  • Speakers Making Ratteling Sounds on my Qosmio F20

Just purchased a Qosmio and when at full volume the grill if the fan makes a horible rattle. What should i do?

Qosmio's have 3 volume settings , the sound control setting found on the task bar, symbolised by a yellow speaker. The volume wheel on the side of the machine and also the volume control in applications such as Media player. If the sound control and application sound is turned up to maximum you will get distortion due to the high levels of bass. The sound control and application controls are needed for external speakers, you only need these set to 50-75% and then you can use the main volume wheel to adjust the volume, this should get rid of your rattle. Let me know how you get on.

  • IMac hard drive making clicking sound (audio sample)

A couple of nights ago I realized my five year old iMac was making a sound I have never heard it make before. It is a scratching noise that I assume is coming from my internal hard drive (hard drive is stock, has never been replaced). It isn't a super loud noise, but it sounds like the noise some hard drives make when they are "searching" or "thinking". I'm wondering if my hard drive is beginning to fail, or if the problem could be something as simple as dust or dirt caught in the drive. An audio sample is in the link below, please help me diagnose my problem. Thanks!

When you ran SMART Utility, were any of the sensors out of range or close to it, although not enough to trip the health measure? Just wondering. I once replaced an older hard drive that was showing error rates above normal, even when the drive was still 'verified'.
Other than that, you've run several tests that would say the hardware is OK.  As GeekStacy said, new hard drive noises are typically not good. So I'd be sure you have a good backup regimen, and if the noises get yet louder or more noticeable, you can either run these various tests again or replace the hard drive.

  • Powerbook making clicking sound and running slow

I have had my powerbook for 3 years. Just recently it started running very slow and spinning beach ball comes up alot. There is a clicking sound coming from the top left corner of the keyboard by the speaker. When the clicking starts is when the beach ball comes up. It doesn't happen all the time. This occurs about every couple of minutes and then goes away. Once the clicking noise goes away the computer runs fine. I have ran disk utility, onyx and techtools (no errors have come up). Nothing has seemed to fix the problem. Can anyone give me some advice on what might be the problem. Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
That sounds like a hard drive possibly beginning to fail. However, it's located on the left side under the palm rest. In the upper left corner of the keyboard, the only moving part is a fan, however, if that were doing something odd it shouldn't cause the beachball to come up, which leads me to think it's a hard drive issue. Next time you hear the ticking, see if it could be coming from under the left palm rest area.
So, ensure that your important data is backed up, and do it regularly, if not doing that already. Assuming it is your hard drive, you can either live with it, or replace the hard drive. (Don't know if you have Applecare, since you said your system is 3 years old). You may have a 4200rpm drive in there today, with 5400rpm being mainstream today, and 7200rpm the faster option. Sizes go up to 160GB in 5400rpm and 100GB in 7200rpm. Seagates come with a 5 year warranty versus 3 year for most other drives.
If you're handy, you can do the replacment yourself or an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple can do it. If Apple or AASP does the replacement, make sure they write on the service order that you want your old hard drive returned to you. Recently, there was a person who was surprised to find that Apple may retain the drive as a trade in on the replacement drive. Also, if it were me, I would specify I want a new drive and not a refurbished drive.

  • ISight making clicking sound

I just bought an iSight yesterday for my PowerBook, and it seems to be emmiting a faint clicking sound. It took me a few minutes to figure out what the noise was, but when I put my ear to the iSight, it was clear that the sound was coming from that. Is this normal?

    Hello Graham Hall1,
As Ian Bickerstaffe posted, the noise is the electro-mechanical cam focus and is a normal noise, but...
It should not be doing it continously. This usually occurs when an object is too close or if the background has an unusually bright light source, such as a bright lamp shinning into the cam or perhaps an window w/bright light coming in. You will also, for a flicker, lose sound when the cam does focus. Normal, but should not be more than a couple of times until it finds focus and then settles down.
    Respectfully,
    Bill Gallagher

  • MacBook making clicking sound when moved?! not the sms HELPP

Today, i was using my MacBook and it started to make a clicking like sound when moved from side to side. I have had my MacBook for less then a week so I have no idea what could have happened. The computer has not beed dropped or anything! It is not the sms because I turned it off to see if the noise would still happen, and it did. Also this happenes when the computer is off. I cannot take it to a store because the closest one to me is an hour away.

Normally, a clicking sound would be an indication of a bad HD or if the Superdrive is trying to read a damage disc. Personally, since its a week-old computer, I'd take a one hour drive than taking the chance of the HD failing after the warranty expired. You can try calling Apple as well (1800APPL). You should still have FREE phone support.

  • Macbook making clicking sound

Hello Everyone, my computer has been making some odd sounds from the bottom right corner, on the corner of where your right palm would rest. I have the MacBook Pro Early 2011 15-Inch model (8,2).
I've opened the computer once to upgrade the RAM, but the computer had been doing this before. I had figured that me putting the bottom back on would fix my problem, but it didn't.
Also, the cover that is removed to open the Mac is slightly more into the computer that it should be -  it isn't flush with the body of the computer. This is also in the same area the clicking is coming from. I, again, figured putting the cover back on would fix it from when I had gotten it - it didn't. I assume this is the reason the computer is clicking, but I'm not positive. I'm certain that it isn't the hard drive clicking either, I've heard that before and is quieter than this is.
Any help you could give would be very much appreciated. By the way, the computer IS under Applecare, so that is an option. Thanks!

So then use the coverage and call Apple.

  • New ipad 2 is making clicking sounds through the speaker

Just received my new ipad 2 in the mail. I set up the ipad yesterday, no external noises whatsoever. Went to use it for the first time today, and as soon as I picked it up, and before I could even open the cover, it began to make clicking noises through the speaker .It does this with the cover closed, and  when I am not even touching it! ( The cover is the correct cover for the ipad2 w/3G)
It sounds like rapid camera clicks, but I have yet to use the camera. I checked to make sure it was not taking pictures on its own, and it wasnt. I even covered  the outside camera lens just in case someone had hijacked the camera remotely from somewhere out in cyberspace!
Thank you so much for your help.
PS It was purchased thorugh the online apple store as a refurb.

NEVER MIND! In the Sounds Settings, I just turned the Lock Sounds switch to off and that solved the problem!

  • Ipod touch internal speakers making cracking sound

  • I hooked up external speakers and the sound will only come out of 1 speaker

I have an electronic karaoke system on my HP envy dv7 Notebook and I just bought 2 new Mackey Powered Speakers and a new Mackey ProFX12 mixing board.   I can only get sound to come out of 1 speaker.   How do I get the sound to come out of the Right and the Left at the same time? Thanks for any input or help you can provide.

You may have dust or a small object in your headphone jack. You can purchase cans of air from computing stores that can clear any dust that may be causing the problem. If that doesn't work then a larger object may have damaged part of the jack at which point it would be advised to visit your local Genius Bar and see what repairs they can offer. Try not to insert any other objects especially ones with sharp edges into the jack as this often creates further damage. Hope everything is working again soon.

  • IMac external speakers making noise

I am not sure if this is the correct place for this question...
but my speakers I have connected to my iMac make an annoying staticky noise all the time. It does this no matter what volume my iMac is set at, but it will go away if I turn the volume down on my speakers. When I plug my iBook or iPod in, the sound is not there. I have replaced cords and tried different inputs on the tuner, but the noise is still there.
Is there some kind of option for the iMac sound output to fix this?

    Hi Don,
Griffin made the iFire a few years ago that does just that...connect the Pro Speakers to any computer. Google it and I'm sure you can find one.
