External speakers no longer produce sound

SPeakers worked fine when I first hooked up system 10/3/14 but yesterday no sound at all. Also control panela does not populate

Thank you for the additional information.
Have there been any software updates recently?  Sometimes this can cause conflicts.
Here is the original audio driver for the computer.  I suggest installing it to see if that solves your problem.  After it is installed, go into the Control Panel / Sound to assure that your sound device is set to Default.

I am running iOS 6.1.3....i have tried reset, restart and restore----no joy....i have cleaned the dock port and speaker and mike area ----no joy! Now my question,,,is this a hardware malfunction or a bug from the iOS???..this is a replacement fone (march 2013)  my previous fone suffered a wifi antennae breakdown after an iOS update!!,,,covered under warranty...this fone is now given trouble,,is this fone covered under warranty surely li should get more than three months outta my new fone - no???...any advice or help from anyone will be greatly appreciated especially as regards warranty...thanks in advance for looking...

If you use eabuds or headphones on occasion, try inserting and removing the earbuds/headphones several times in a row.
An exchange under warranty remains under the same warranty period as the original purchase. If an exchange under warranty is provided within the last 90 days of the warranty period, the exchange includes a full 90 days of warranty coverage.

  • External speakers no longer work with airport ---- what gives please help

Itunes 8.2 no longer shows the drop down menu where I can choose 'computer' or 'external speakers'. I've used this feature for years, and now, it's gone. Where'd it go?
There is a green light on the Airport. The 'Look for remote speakers connect with AirTunes' is checked. The Imac is reading the wireless network. The external speakers are connected correctly.
Where the heck did it go....and more importantly, how do I get it back?

  • Sound - My built speakers do not show in the output section in sound system preferences area only digital out hence unless I connect external speakers I have no sound - can anyone assist?

on my IMac the internal speakers have ceased working - in the sound preferences area only digital out sound is there no internal speakers to choose so unless I connect external speakers I have no sound

    Hey Jack (woofman jack)
Sounds like the micro switch inside the output jack that switches the audio from internal to external is stuck on external. Try plugging a set of buds, headphones or digital Toslink adapter in and out a few times to see if it will unstick the micro switch. You also might try jiggling a tooth pick around inside the audio output jack to see if that unsticks it? If not then you'll need to make an appointment at your Local Apple Store or Apple Service Provider and have the jack serviced.

  • 3GS external speakers no longer work and significantly diminished recognization of carrier signal

Recently my IPhone 3GS has, through events unknown to me, stopped emitting any sound from the external speakers (sound quality is perfectly fine from headset). Also, signal strength has become almost entirely diminished, and most often "No Carrier" is displayed (have an additional IPhone 3GS on same firmware without any problems, and is actually a few months older). Not sure if the phone is still covered under warranty, since the weblink is not functioning. Was wondering, even though it may not be under Apple's "Limited Warranty" due to duration of time since purchase, will an exchange for a refurb or possibly a service request be compensated? Just wondering what my options are, especially since I am under a business plan through AT&T and have multiple IPhones for coworkers/"friends" including 3-3GS's and a recent IPhone 4 (not to mention my personal IPod Classic for my evening jogging).

If its under warranty thenmaybe Apple will fix it, they are very easy to come by search "iPhones 3gsdock connector" on eBay and this will show you exactly how to take the phone apart to get to the dock connector, I have brought one from eBay today as I have been having antenna problems with my phone hopefully that will fix it, anyway here is the guide to the iPhone disassembly.

3Gs' are very easy to takeapart all you need is a small Philips screw driver and a suction pad.
    Hope it goes well

  • Imac External Speakers No Longer Working?

If this has been asked elsewhere, sorry! Please direct me.
I have a 21.5" Intel Imac my husband got for me last April. He got the JBL duet speakers at the same time. They have always worked great and I love them.
Yesterday morning before I went to my folks' house, the speakers were working - I watched something on youtube. Last night, while hubby was napping, I watched a couple webinars relating to my business. No problem with the speakers.
Went to bed. Hubby came and woke me up wanting to know what was wrong with the speakers. He was complaining that voices on his movie were distorted, that only music could be heard, and then that the speakers weren't working. When I came downstairs, he had for some reason plugged them into the microphone port, not the headphones.
Now, he has previously in the last couple days plugged the speakers into his Macbook with no problem, and there was no issue putting them back on my imac, so I don't think that was it.
I have the speakers plugged into the headphones. I've unplugged them, plugged them back in, hooked them to the computer, all kinds of things. I finally got sound to come through them a bit ago, but it was tinny and the voice distorted and echoing.
I did notice something odd. In System Prefs, the Imac is now recognizing something is in the headphone jack (it wasn't) but still is thinking that something is in the mic jack even though it isn't! I keep having to select built in speaker because it wants to pick up sounds with something that isn't there. (And when my husband had the speakers stuck in the mic jack, I think they were being treated as a mic).
So are my speakers just suddenly messed up? They were working fine earlier! Or is there something I can do to get this fixed? This is my first mac and I'm so clueless!

This solved my problem: in HARDWARE - Sound Preferences, I selected OUTPUT. I highlighted Headphone Port, (It was not originally highlighted), and then performed a complete shutdown (not restart). Re-booted, launched iTunes and the Bose speakers were working, as were the headphones.
This may not work for everyone, but it worked for me. Good Luck!

  • External speakers are no longer working, why?

Ive been Apple Airplay and now my external speakers no longer work on my imac, it is something to do with Airplay or is there something that I need to fix or reinstall?  Look forward to hearing from you.  TIA

    Hi,
There are no external speakers in Sound Preferences/ Output, only internal speakers, or if you plug something into the output port, Headphones, or a sound interface device. Hold down the Option key and click on the sound icon in the top menu bar on your display and you will see the options for output and input.
Have you got an audio system plugged into the output port? If it is not working, check your cables.

  • Built-in speakers not showing in sounds or System profiler

    Hi all,
I've just bought a 2nd hand eMac 1Ghz model. Having logged in and checked over the installed software (just the basics) and connected to my home network, I tried starting up iTunes to listen to internet radio. I noticed that there was no sound, although I hadn't noticed the lack of startup chime! First thing I checked was the volume, which was set to max, and then popped in headphones - which work. I checked the options in Sound and noticed that all that is listed for the devices is the headphones. After a bit of searching online I found suggestions to Archive and Repair OS X, which didn't solve the problem, I then did a clean install of OS X and used the System Restore discs that came with the eMac to re-install all the software. Again, no joy. After another search online I spotted a suggestion here regarding System Profiler, so I checked this and found that there is no Audio listing under Hardware.
Can anyone suggest what I can try to get the speakers appearing, and working again? I'm a bit of a novice with Macs, although I've worked on a G5 previously, this is the first Mac I've owned! With a PC I'd expect it to be a case of a loose soundcard, but I haven't the foggiest where to start looking inside a Mac!
    Thanks in advance!

This is a long shot. On some Mac laptops, an out-of-spec phono-plug can jam a contact within the jack in the "mute speakers" position and exhibit the symptoms you've described. The first check is to shine a light into the jack to see if there is a foreign object present.
Although the affected jack on the notebooks is a newer technology, you might try the lo-tech fix that usually works on the newer units: insert a standard mini-plug and GENTLY wiggle the plug in the horizontal plane. If that doesn't restore sound when you remove the plug, try the same thing but wiggle in the vertical plane. Last is to wiggle the plug in a circular motion.
Worth a try. The fact that the headphones work pretty much precludes the sound hardware (soldered to the logic board) from being the culprit. You may find that using a cheap set of external speakers is the better-sounding option and MUCH easier than taking an eMac apart. I have a pair of "no-name" speakers I picked up for US$2 at a yard sale that are far better than the little internal speakers.

  • External speakers do not turn back on when computer restarted...

iMac 24" C2D. External speakers are Harman Kardon Sounds SticksII-Z (the ones you plug into the headphone jack) on the back of the computer. They work great, when the computer sleeps, and is reawakened they work. (And yes, when the external speakers are plugged in - the sound preference pane shows "headphones.")
THE ISSUE - if I turn the computer and the external speakers off over night - and restart the computer...the next morning, no sound form the external speakers.
I check the sound preference pane - still shows "headphones" (meaning the external speakers are plugged in) but no sound. I unplug the external speakers - and the internal speakers iMac speakers take over.
So, then I plug the external speakers in - and all is well.
Seems like a small nit - but why doesn't the computer automatically play throught the external speakers after an off-on cycle?

iMac Intel C2D 2.16 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   1 GB RAM, Printer HPC3180, Sounds SticksII-Z Harman Kardon

    Hello Michael
"Seems like a small nit - but why doesn't the computer automatically play throught the external speakers after an off-on cycle? "
When you startup or restarts the startup chime will come from the internal speakers. Then the system should automaticly switch to external when it detects a jack pluged in. From what you discribe it seems to work properly when the computer is up and running, so it sound more like a startup issue.
First reset the SMC the instructions are in this link:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
Then test to see if this solved the issue!
If not then maybe you should Repair Disk Permissions, the instructions are in this link:

    Then test again!

  • External Speakers do not play

I just bought my computer yesterday, the internal speakers work, but when I hook up
my external speakers I only hear sound coming from internal not externals.

First off, are you sure that they are plugged into the correct audio port? It would be the port with a headphones icon.
If so, tell us about the speakers and what you have tried to resolve the issue.

  • External Speakers and electricity?

I got some external speakers hooked up they sound good. When I turn the lights on in the room or a fan though they sort of pop or make a noise. They are hooked up through the mini jack in the back of my imac. Also they are plugged into a power strip with my printer and Imac. Should I be concerned about the power doing some damage to my computer or to the speakers. Any ideas what I should do we be appreciated. Also what is the safest way to power my Imac directly to the wall , surge protector, or a power stip. thanks

The SAFEST way to power your iMac is with a UPS.

  • USB External speakers

My wife got her new toy a few days ago and we notived when plugged in usb powered external speakers in it he sound still comes out of the speakers on the computer itself and no thru the external. Now some of the buttons work though like can control the volume from the external speakers.
We are new to apple so wondering if we need to turn something on in system directory.
We have tested the speakers and work fine on my windows laptop.. Its a logitech.

Open System Preferences/Sound and select the USB Speakers as your Output device
If that doesn't do as you expect, or you need to tweak them, run Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup and select them there then adjust the Format and Volume etc.

    Hi,
When you start Messages fro the first time you are asked for an Apple ID
When this is verified and entered it appears in Messages Menu > Preference > Accounts and is Enabled.
The App should have also picked on on those iChat Accounst you had before.
These should be Enabled if they were when you last used iChat.
Exactly which "Accounts" are logged in can be seen in Message Menu > Accounts and will include the iMessage "Account" and Bonjour.
In the Window menu you will see CMD +0 for the Messages window and CMD+1 for the "Buddies" window which is a combined list at this stage.
Go to the Preferences > General Section and Untick the "Collect all accounts into one list".
This will give you separate iChat type Buddy lists.
You can check if that account/Buddy list is set to Invisible or if in the Preferences > Accounts > Security you have settings that will block some people from seeing you as On line.
You are saying Buddies can see you as On Line which implies they are still sending to your AIM based Names (@Mac.com is a valid AIM Screen Name)
I am not sure from your post if you are trying to iMessage their email IDs thinking they are Apple IDs and that they are using Messages as well.
There is no Buddy list for iMessages side
No-one can tell you are "On Line" until they have your details in the "To" spot in Messages with the correct iMessaged contact info (iPhone Number or Apple ID)
Obviously an Apple ID can be an email or look like one.
In some cases they are also valid AIM Screen Names as well.
In the case or the @mac.com name you may have linked this Apple ID to iMessages as well.

  • Problems with sound from external speakers after iOS 5.0.1 update

Have others experienced problems with external speakers on the Iphone 4 after iOS 5.0.1 update?  My phone no longer rings, sounds when i receive a text message, sounds alarm, etc.  Vibrate works fine and when i plug in headphones I can hear music through the headphones.  Any fixes for this?

    Hi Guys,
I have post eariler on another forum and I have the same problem, I have tried all the things listed here and nothing was perminant in fixing this painful iphone hating problem.... and failed.  You probably have the problem when you use youtube or your music external speaker that there is no volume bar and no sound.   I have had the same problem But I need to happily say that I now have the fix!!!!  This worked for me and I fixed it by myself so you don't need to go to apple or service centre or anything.
Ok I like so many of you here truly believed this was as IO5 issue as it only dropped the sound on the speakers once that IO5 update came along.  I tried a bunch of reset, reboots, home clicks, lock and unlocks, to fix this and all failed.  some worked for an hour but then failed.  hours of my life that I will never get back.   but since I have learnt this is not a IO5 problem but a hardware issue! ...  and in paticualar is has to do with your bottom connection.  Your phone is thinking it is docked all the time.
To fix the no sound problem what you need is...
    1.  a torch
    2.  a tooth brush
    3.  methalated spirits
    4. a butter knife
    Step 1.
get your torch and shine it down the bottom connection plate to see what kind of dust, sand, hair or anything you have stuck in there.   all that need to be removed!  everything!  it might look clean but still thats ok go to step 2.
    step 2.
Turn on your music app and put the speakers on!  If your phone is like mine it should not work.  you most probably don't even have the volume display to turn it on but its ok, just do it! and it should still play with no sound.   its important you try and run the speakers as this will show you that it is a hardware problem.
    step 3.
Dip your tooth brush into some methated sprits.   then at your sink tap the exess metho out of your brush as you just want the brushes to be slightly damp, not soaking wet and then scrub the bottom connetiors on your iphone.  work the brush back and forward in a way that scoops the dirt out of the phone, not just pushing it side to side.
(As you bushing you should notice the volume bar come back on or off as you scub.   This happened to me and that is how I realised I was on the right track to fixing this problem as I was doing something external that was actually controling when the volume display came on or off.   but once I cleaned it this still didn't fix the problem...)
    Step 4.
Use the back side of a butter knife (not the sharp side) to gently slide over the connectors on the iphone.  Do this gently as you are only pushing down on the tiny metal contect bars and you should notice the volume display come on again.  slide it back and forward.  Now the area of interest is about 2/3 along the connection plate to the right.   This is the area that has the infomation sent when your iphone thinks its docked.
This has worked for me and I have not had a problem since I did this 2 weeks ago.   I have since learnt that the new IOS 5 has activated a different part of the bottom conectors.  if you have been using dodgy connectors or unapproved apple cables (as I was)  any damage or hair and dirt on the terminal this is effecting it.  Try it.   just remember if you can do something external to your phone then there lies the problem.
Hope this works for your phone as it did for mine.
    Cheers

  • No sound from external speakers in win7 partition

    hi all,
apologies if this is a common problem - but i couldn't find any info specific to it on the web.
i installed windows 7 in 64bit w/ bootcamp on my macbook pro and so far everything has been going great .. other than that i can't get any sound out of my external speakers.
i have the latest cirrus audio drivers and i also have the realtek drivers that were recommended. the built in speakers work fine but, as we know, they're not great.
when i plug my external speakers in, for some reason, the control panel thinks that they are headphones. as far as i know there are no additional drivers required for the speakers. they are speedlink gravity nx 2.1 speakers if that's relevant.
    thanks in advance,
    nick

    Hi,
Your speakers are active and require 1.77v peak to peak at the input to produce sound, that is less than headphones need so if your Windows installation sees them as headphones it will not stop them from producing sound, so:
Get some headphones and plug them in, if there is no sound through them you can assume the port is outputting nothing.
Have you installed the BootCamp drivers from the CD?
