External speakers not working/recognized

Plugged my JBL Creature Speakers and Subwoofer into my new Mac Pro and I got nuthin'
Checked that everything was on and plugged in correctly and tried the various sound settings and both jacks in the back of the computer.
Any ideas?

Given the number of reports I see on macbook pro audio jack problems I get the impression that that jack is not that reliable.  Look at the More Like This section n the right for possible related issues and fixes.
Since I have a mac pro, not a macbook pro (you posted in th wrong forum, should have been the macbook pro forum) I won't comment further than to try the software suggestion of trying a smc reset.

  • External Speakers Not Working with Snow Leopard

I installed Snow Leopard. Prior to the installation my external speakers, plugged into the headphone jack, worked great. Now, after installing SL, my external speakers and my headphones will not work. Any ideas?

I don't know what the issue was. I muted and then took mute off, still no external speakers or headphones. So, I just restarted. I guess whatever the problem was just fixed itself. Now I have external speakers and headphones.

  • External speakers not working with iMac and Lion

I have a dual core imac with Lion and external speakers I just bought from Apple. I cannot get them to work with itunes or anything else on the imac. Can anyone tell me what to do? They work well with an ipod touch, but not the iMac.

Hmmm. I plugged the speakers into the headphone jack. they are  the Audyssey Lower East Side Media Speakers. When I hoty option on the menu bar, headphones are checked as output. When I go to system preferences and check output, all it says is "headphone port." Still no change.

  • External speakers not working

My cambridge soundworks external speakers don't work with macbook pro. Checked system preferences after plugging them into headphone port (i assume this is correct??) but still no sound. Anything else I could try?
Should any speaker set work. They are very good but a few yrs old.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I've been using my Nano on my Mini dock connector (which I didn't think would work, and it's working fine. i think, lie you said, maybe it is a connection which has been compromised in some way? Perhaps the pins are not all connecting as they should ? I would like to follow this discussion, as my Nano is now taking the place, for the most part, of my 15 Gb 3rd gen.

  • External speakers not working in some apps

Just set up new MacPro running Snow Leopard.
External speakers working fine in some apps but not others (iTunes plays perfectly, but mail notification audio in mail app runs through computer speakers -- at very low volume). Checked preferences. Nothing set differently than from old G5. Am I missing something here?
Anyone have similar situation? If so, what can I do to fix.
    Thanks.

There are two settings to check. Under the Sound Preference Pane, check the first tab, Sound Effects. Check the drop down setting for "Play sound effects through:" and make sure that setting is correct. Then check the Output setting and make sure your speakers are selected.

  • External speakers not working/option doesn't appear in pref panel

My external speakers suddenly stopped working for all sounds. When I go under the system preferences --> output, it only lists headphones. The headphones do work and nothing is muted. The external speakers themselves also work on a different computer. I reset the PRAM, which did not work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • External Speakers not working with docking station

A thinkpad is in a docking station and external speakers are plugged in, they don't have any sound. The speakers work fine if they are plugged into the laptop itself. Does anyone have the solution?

    Hi, sjadnew
Apologies, as I wasn't too clear in my last post. If you look on the bottom of the computer, you should see a seven digit code in the format of XXXX-XXX, which is your machine's make and model. If you look on the bottom of the docking station, you should also see a model number, though it may be in a different format. This information can be used to look up the exact docking station and computer hardware to better diagnose. If possible, I would try putting in a request with the IT department to see if you can get the drivers updated.
    Best,
    Adam

  • External speakers not working on iphone

Hi, have a new iphone and the speakers do not work, at all! I can hear the ringtones etc with the earphones on but nothing without them. Have tried reset and plugging/unplugging the earphones but no luck at all, so frustrating!

The iPhone includes a single speaker. The opposite grill that appears the same is the iPhone's microphone.
If no change after an iPhone reset, inserting and removing the earbuds several times in a row, and after restoring your iPhone with iTunes, your iPhone has a hardware problem. The iPhone includes a one year warranty.

  • Sound Output through external speakers not working

For some reason, the sound output to my JBL speaker system that is connected through the headphones jack of my iMac has cut out. When I go to the Sound Preferance panel, under Output, my choices are :
    Internal Speakers
    Soundflower (2CH)
    Soundflower (16CH)
I have NO idea what these Soundflower things are, and don't see a standard "Headphones" option, which is the jack they are plugged into. I also don't see a way to delete these Soundflower "devices".
The sound output not working seemed to happen after a power outage in my building, so I'm going to try a powerreset of the iMac, but still not sure what is going on with this Soundflower stuff.

/System/Library/Extensions/Soundflower.kext and restarting your computer uninstalls Soundflower.
To remove preference panes, context-click on the preference pane's icon and select the Remove option.

    Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

  • Sound on external speakers not working

    Hi Support Community,
I've had a mac book pro for almost 2 years and I am only recently having sound issues which seems to be quite common with the new OS's! Anyway, this may be a bit complicated but I'll try my hardest to explain what is happening.
My internal speakers work fine, when I plug my headphones in, they work fine but when I plug my external speakers in, the sound goes through the internal speakers. The weirdest thing is that my exeternal speakers work fine with my ipod and iphone.
I would be so greatful if anyone has an idea of what is going on.
    Thank you,
    Jake Carr

Are you connecting your speakers via the headphone jack? Make sure it is firmly connected. Also, go into Utilities > Audio/MIDI Setup and right click on "Built-in Output" and select "use this device for sound output."
If all of that is correctly done and it still doesn't work then try a PRAM reset. Shutdown your computer, then upon starting it back up hold down Command+Option+P+R all at the same time until after you hear the second start up chime. It will chime 3 times in total.

  • External speakers not recognized

After sucessfully setting up airport, and getting my external speakers to work, my apple network no longer sees the external speakers.  The speaker option does not come up at the bottom right of my iTunes screen.  Any ideas?
    TIA

When I hooked up the Bose Companion II speakers .... the computer didn't recognize them.
Am I missing something here? Whenever I've connected a USB device
to my MacBook Pro or Powerbook G4 they've worked flawlessly.
I've seen referenced to setting up the MIDI utility, could that be it?
Not sure what you mean by "the computer didn't recognize them."
Do they appear in *System Preferences > Sound > Output* ?
When I connect a USB audio output device, the system "sees" it -- but
doesn't automatically enable it as the active audio output. The system
default (internal speakers or headphone jack) remains in force 'til you
change it manually -- either in System Preferences > Sound > Output
or with /Applications/Utilities/Audio Midi Setup > Audio Devices.

  • External Speakers stopped working on Imac

External speakers stopped working.   Verified speakers operating with Iphone.   Checked that speakers plugged in correctly.   Tried usual power cycling step.   External speakers do not show up in sound preferences.    Anyone with any advice?
    Thanks,

If you unplug the speakers to the internal speakers work OK? If not try  resetting the system PRAM see Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If they still don't work or if the internal works OK then look into the speaker plug. Do you see a red light? There is a switch inside the plug that detects the presents of a  jack and sometimes it gets stuck or breaks entirely.
You could try gently using a non-conductive device (a toothpick is good) probing inside the plug to see if you can free the switch. Of course this could be harmful if done incorrectly. If the system is still under warranty you might want to take it to have it looked at.
