Wrong utility. System profiler only reports on built in audio stuff. Open Audio Midi Setup app in /Applications/Utilities and check the speakers there.

  • External Speakers - System Volume at Startup

    I recently hooked external speakers up to my macbook, and I've been experiencing an annoying problem. Whenever I start or restart the macbook, the system volume turns itself down to 50 percent, i.e at the time I shut the macbook down, the system volume is up to max volume; I then restart and it turns down to 50 percent.
    Any ideas on how I can get it to stay at 100 percent unless I turn it down manually -- the same way the internal speakers work -- or is this just a system quirk designed to protect my sensitive ears and/or speakers?

    Hi
    You should be able to set the startup volume setting to whatever you like using MacOS X's Automator. The appropriate script is in the "System" category. Just modify it by putting the slider to the desired value. You don't have to save after the modification because it's a standard startup script that is used by MacOS X itself automatically after reboot.

  • Built-in speakers not showing in sounds or System profiler

    Hi all,
    I've just bought a 2nd hand eMac 1Ghz model. Having logged in and checked over the installed software (just the basics) and connected to my home network, I tried starting up iTunes to listen to internet radio. I noticed that there was no sound, although I hadn't noticed the lack of startup chime! First thing I checked was the volume, which was set to max, and then popped in headphones - which work. I checked the options in Sound and noticed that all that is listed for the devices is the headphones. After a bit of searching online I found suggestions to Archive and Repair OS X, which didn't solve the problem, I then did a clean install of OS X and used the System Restore discs that came with the eMac to re-install all the software. Again, no joy. After another search online I spotted a suggestion here regarding System Profiler, so I checked this and found that there is no Audio listing under Hardware.
    Can anyone suggest what I can try to get the speakers appearing, and working again? I'm a bit of a novice with Macs, although I've worked on a G5 previously, this is the first Mac I've owned! With a PC I'd expect it to be a case of a loose soundcard, but I haven't the foggiest where to start looking inside a Mac!
    Thanks in advance!

    This is a long shot. On some Mac laptops, an out-of-spec phono-plug can jam a contact within the jack in the "mute speakers" position and exhibit the symptoms you've described. The first check is to shine a light into the jack to see if there is a foreign object present.
    Although the affected jack on the notebooks is a newer technology, you might try the lo-tech fix that usually works on the newer units: insert a standard mini-plug and GENTLY wiggle the plug in the horizontal plane. If that doesn't restore sound when you remove the plug, try the same thing but wiggle in the vertical plane. Last is to wiggle the plug in a circular motion.
    Worth a try. The fact that the headphones work pretty much precludes the sound hardware (soldered to the logic board) from being the culprit. You may find that using a cheap set of external speakers is the better-sounding option and MUCH easier than taking an eMac apart. I have a pair of "no-name" speakers I picked up for US$2 at a yard sale that are far better than the little internal speakers.

  • I am trying to format a new external hard drive. It is attached via a USB 2.0 docking station. It does not show up in Disk Utility or Terminal, but does show up in System Profiler. How can I get my MacBook Pro to recognise it?

    I need help trying to format an external hard drive. My Mac won't recognise it anywhere other than System Profiler.

    The problem is that it is a Western Digital 3.5 inch internal hard drive housed inside a hard drive caddy. So the only way to connect it to my computer is through a dock.

  • (HELP PLEASE) System Sound & Set of External Speakers

    Hello,
    I have a HP Pavilion All-in-One and in the past we've had no problem with neither the system sound or a set of speakers we've hooked up to it. Now suddenly I can only hear audio is I turn it up to 95 or above to hear it at any volume worth listening too, but turning it up that high used to almost blow you out.
    Some changes or differences I "think" I notice are when you click on the volume icon in the sys tray, there is only one "mixer" but if you click on that it shows two things, which I don't think it has described them like this before, but it shows like the picture below.
    I don't recall ever seeing the "Applications - System Sounds" before. But we can't get the extra speaker set to work and I remember turning the volume up to 6 if I wanted to hear it without disturbing anyone else in the house.
    Anyone have any suggestions? The only thing that I know that was changed lately was we switched to AT&T internet but I believe the external speakers worked fine after the installtion. Any help would be appreciated!!

    I have a MacBook Pro. When I go to system preferences, the external speakers option does not appear on the input tab and, of course, the external speakers do not work. Help?

    When you plug headphones in, or external speakers, where it states "internal speakers", it will rename that "headphones", say. Unless you are running an external sound card.

    Though I have doubts for success, you might try a SMC reset.  It can do no harm.  Otherwise, barring suggestions from others, the Apple Store or qualified repair facility is the last option.

  • External Hard Drive in System Profiler not on desktop

    The system profiler recognizes my firewire drive (though it has a corrupted looking title: "m(õc‰ìÎÜÒ”≥’:". I can't access the drive itself. I've tried disk warrior, disk utility and Data Rescue II in an effort to get in (so I can put the info on another drive) and none of them find the drive at all.
    Any ideas (beyond cycling power or changing to different cables/ports) how I can get to the drive so I can salvage anything off of it?
    Thanks,

    Basics of File Recovery
    If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
    If you empty the Trash the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When you delete files you erase only the directory entries, not the files themselves. However, the space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
    The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Sound - My built speakers do not show in the output section in sound system preferences area only digital out hence unless I connect external speakers I have no sound - can anyone assist?

    on my IMac the internal speakers have ceased working - in the sound preferences area only digital out sound is there no internal speakers to choose so unless I connect external speakers I have no sound

    Hey Jack (woofman jack)
    Sounds like the micro switch inside the output jack that switches the audio from internal to external is stuck on external. Try plugging a set of buds, headphones or digital Toslink adapter in and out a few times to see if it will unstick the micro switch. You also might try jiggling a tooth pick around inside the audio output jack to see if that unsticks it? If not then you'll need to make an appointment at your Local Apple Store or Apple Service Provider and have the jack serviced.

  • Can't see external speakers

    I just connected my external speakers from an older G4 but no sound is coming out. I have checked and they don't show up on the system profiler.
    Any ideas would be cool
    Cheers

    System Profile will not show you what speakers are connected to your Macbook.
    Double check that they work, they're plugged in (if they need power), the cable is good and that you have the jack plugged into the line out and not the line in (line out has the 'headphone' icon above it). You can also look at System Preferences/Sound and make sure that 'Built in output' is selected. Make sure your volume is up too.

  • Hard Drive not recognized by system profiler

    A few months ago with the help of some of you I inserted a new hard drive and things are / were working just fine. I have just noticed that now in the system profiler it is not being recognized but my old one original one is at the 74 G capacity. I am using the hd due to I'm on here so why not showing up? I had also inserted a PCI card. All was recognized when I did it.

  • How do I connect Apple TV to external speakers and my TV?

    I just bought an Apple TV for my studio apartment and have it connected to my TV via HDMI, and use AirPlay to stream my music and videos. Video works great, but the my TV's internal speakers are low quality. So, I would like to have my audio come from external speakers (which I have not bought yet), for the following 2 scenarios:
    Listening to music via AirPlay, preferably without having to turn my TV on.
    Watching videos on my TV, with the audio coming through my external speakers rather than the TV speakers
    I see my Apple TV has an Optical Audio (Toslink) port, but the salesperson at the nearby electronics store said none of their speakers have Toslink cables, only 3.5 mm (or USB). The only solution I found is an AV receiver box that has optical input but costs hundreds of dollars. I am looking for something cheaper and am willing to settle for "pretty good" sound quality.
    Is there another way to get this to work?
    This article recommends using a digital audio converter (DAC) to connect the Apple TV to a stereo amplifier. This seems like it would satisfy scenarios (1) and (2) above.
    Also, I found this "Toslink to 3.5 mm adapter" for a few bucks; could I just plug that into my Apple TV and then connect it to any speakers (like computer speakers) with 3.5mm input?
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Rex,
    Since the toslink is optical, the 3.5mm adapter will not work for you as it is only ment as a conversion to a mini-toslink cable. Your first option of using the DAC, is in my opinion the best and perhaps only way to get audio out without going to a fancy amp or tuner first.
    One option that I'm considering is the Bose Solo TV sound system. It might set you back about 4-Grant's, but I generally enjoy the sound of bose for most music/tv/movie purposes; and it has a direct optical audio input that you can run either from your tv or your ATV. Whatever audio you're sending to your TV via the HDMI, should go to these speakers through your HDTV's toslink output with equal digital clarity.
    I've read a few other posts on the apple discussion forum which lead me to believe that the optical output of the ATV might not work so well after the 5.2 update... so whatever I do, it won't be JUST for use with the ATV.

  • To generate xml code in encoding  as specified in system profile options

    Hi,
    i have a customer bug wherein the report page which is generated after a particular process, which is a .xml file, does not open because we have special characters which are not getting encoded properly!..
    the probable solution to this would be to encode the .xml file in the encoding format specified in system profile options.
    After the content generation the following code is used to generate the tags and the .xml page:
    DBMS_XMLGEN.setRowSetTag(l_qryCtx,'INVOICE_SET');
    DBMS_XMLGEN.setRowTag(l_qryCtx, 'INVOICE_RECORD');
    DBMS_XMLGEN.setBindValue(l_qryCtx,'BATCH_ID', p_batch_id);
    DBMS_XMLGEN.setBindValue(l_qryCtx,'SUPPLIER_ID', rec.supplier_id);
    DBMS_XMLGEN.setBindValue(l_qryCtx,'SITE_ID', rec.site_id);
    l_result_clob :=DBMS_XMLGEN.GETXML(l_qryCtx);
    l_result_clob := substr(l_result_clob,instr(l_result_clob,'>')+1);
    l_temp_invoice_count := DBMS_XMLGEN.getNumRowsProcessed(l_qryCtx);
    l_invoice_count := l_invoice_count + l_temp_invoice_count;
    DBMS_XMLGEN.closeContext(l_qryCtx);
    clob_to_file(l_result_clob);
    here we have a transaction type in portugese like Nota de Crédito
    and the issue summary is as follows
    It contains some foreign language symbols which are not encoded in UTF-8 format hence IE is showing the error. Even though in mozilla the file is completely opened but the same foreign language symbol is not shown. So the error exists in all the browsers.
    can you please suggest how the encoding maybe done so as to avoid the above problem!...
    and also how to include the encoding as per mentioned in the system profile options.

    Hi,
    >>>The XSD doesn't have any messages only simple and complex types - I can't seem to relate (via drag and drop) them to a data or message type to generate the required objects.
    maybe it has some reference inside to some other types which you did not get?
    if so you need to import into IR/ESR all files and put the correct reference (external archives)
    this would be the proper way to get the file generated according to the xml schema
