External SSD boot from cloned rMBP

I have ordered refurbished 2.5 mac mini from Apple store. I have a cloned Samsung Evo 250 external 3.0 usb drive from my rmbp.
Can I boot the mini from the cloned drive?

I thought I could. I don't know if the refurbished have Maverick pre loaded but I will update it if not.
I didn't want to use the scratch disk because their slow and I don't want to crack it open to install a SSD
because I want to resell it when the refresh comes out. Thanks.

  • How to boot from cloned external HD

I have just cloned my HD using Carbon Copy Cloner.
I can not figure out how to boot from this cloned drive.
I am sure it must be something easy like holding a key down while restarting.
    Thanks,
    Brian

you can also use the start up pane found within system preferences.

  • TM to backup from an external SSD boot drive

I have just installed a 240GB LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbold SSD as a boot drive for my 2011 iMac (which contains only the 7,200 prm HDD). This has improved read/write speeds dramatically. I have transferred all my data and applications to the external drive in order to see the full benefit of the SSD.
However, I had not considered Time Machine. I thought it would simply be a matter of identifying the external drive and then connecting to the Time Capsule. However, the external drive is not visible in Time Machine set up and I suspect there could be a good reason: that it is not possible. Any help would be appreciated.
    Michael

External storage devices are automatically added to the Time Machine exclusion list when first mounted. If you want them to be backed up, you have to remove them from the list in the Time Machine preference pane.

  • External ssd boot drive - tidying up!

Hi all, to speed up my late 2011 27" iMac I've upgraded the RAM to 12gb (small improvement) and then installed an external thunderbolt 256GB SSD drive as my boot drive (massive performance improvement.)
My question is now what's the best thing to do with the internal 1TB HDD? I've read that locating your home folders onto the internal drive is best practice for performance (frees up spave on the SSD for the system to use). I think it would be useful to have a backup of the boot drive on the internal HDD but how to do everything in the best way is what I need advice on....
Should I delete the copies of the home directories on the internal HDD drive before moving them from the SSD to HDD? Should I then delete them from the SSD? At the moment the HDD is still as it was when I Carbon Copied it onto the SSD but that means it's now a slightly out of date version of the boot drive.
I want to end up with a backup of my install but free up as much space as possible on both the SSD and the HDD and get the best performance I can overall.
    Any help appreciated!

Look through several of them. There are those for Windows and those for Macs. For example, Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. Or follow the link at the bottom: ssd and hdd together mac.

  • Creating external ssd boot drive on mac mini late 2012

I just bought mac mini (i7) late 2012 and have ordered Lacie rugged 120GB ssd. I would like to create the new ssd as a boot disk. I have already installed quite a few applications on hard drive. What should I do in order to create the external boot disk? I have for instance Adobe Photpshop, Adobe Premiere Elements and o course Apple's video and photo editing software. Should I also transfer the applications (and which) to the new SSD and  how should I do it in order to keep activations etc. Detailed instructions are wished, because I am newbie with Mac,

I am not clear why you want to do this, because it sounds to me like you want to make the new drive a complete duplicate of the internal drive. I do not see the point of this. If it is for security reasons, you need only an inexpensive external drive to serve as a Time Machine backup.
However, if that is indeed what you want to do, all you need is a program like Carbon Copy Cloner. Use it to make a copy of the internal drive on the external. CCC will make it bootable.
As far as Adobe activations are concerned, your copies on the same computer will retain their activated status.
    Detailed instructions:
    1. download CCC
    2. connect the external
    3. run CCC to duplicate the internal to the external.

  • Unable to boot from cloned MacOS 10.6.8 server

    Hi there,
we've successfully restored a MacOS 10.6.8 server image to an Intel Xserve. However, there seems to be a boot cache issue. Sometimes I am unable to boot and MacOS Server won't restart. The Xserve restarts twice on the gray Apple screen. Than it's hanging on the gray Apple screen. no disk activity for minutes. I've waited 30 minutes. I had to power down the server. After that the  server boots normally. no errors in verbose mode during startup.
I am using 3 volumes (all 3 using the same system clone). All Bay drives using the original Apple Disks. They are brand new. <29 hours.
Resetting the NVRAM a couple of times didn't solve the issue. The booting error is reproducible. This system runs fine and it's really clean. I just installed the latest MacOS 10.6.8 combo Update
I don't know what else I can I do? I really appreciate any help on this.

Sorry for the delay in responding.
Thank you, Peter. The Xserve running fine so far. We've had any boot issue.

  • Yosemite won't Boot from External SSD with Firewire Connection

Seeking help, I boot from external SSD drives from my 2010 iMac. I recently installed Yosemite on an External SSD with a firewire connection and all went well with the installation and first boot. After completing set up and restarting my iMac Yosemite will no longer boot from the firewire connection it will boot to the loading bar and then get the dreaded Goest Buster Emblem, if I swap out the SSD to USB connection it boots normally. I have 6 SSD Drives with Mavericks and Lion installed on that will boot from the Firewire Connection.  Any suggestions ?

Additionally when testing while the SSD is connected to a USB Connection and booted if I attach any firewire device they are not recognized or connected to the operating system.

  • Can Leoprrd install on a external USB HD and boot from it.

    hi, first post here.
I have serveral external usb hd. I wanted to know if i attach one to my aging G4 1 ghz 512 mb mac.
Put in Leopard Install disc in my dvd drive, will Leopard install on the external and boot from it.
this way I could somehow dual booy 10.4 or 10.5... Is this even possible.
Ps I also have a extrnal firewire drive but would perfer to install and boot from the USB port instead.
I know tiger didn't let me do this....but perhap Leopard will.

a Drive Partitioned in GUID will NOT boot to a PPC (G4,G5) machine. you need to Partition the drive using APM. APM will boot on both PPC and intel machines.
A GUID 10.5 startup will be reconized by the system startup prefrerence. but if you try to restart the computer using that startup, it will give you the missing OS icon and then revert back to the system drive.
Also I've noticed that you must be installing from a PPC systme to be able to install on an APM drive. If your on an intel drive, it will force to repartition to GUID before letting you install.
And since PPC doesn't support GUID, you can't install GUID while booted to a PPC.

  • OS 10.4.7 booting from external HD

I would like to use a firewire Harddrive (external) to boot from, I played around with all the slave and master stuff but I can not get it mount- any thoughts?
Imac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Intel

OK, PPC Macs can boot off of external HDs using Firewire. They cannot be bootied via USB. Intel Macs can be booted off of external HDs using either FW or USB. Of course this assumes that your external drive contains a bootable version of OS X for the particular Mac in question.
As far as I know, the Intel Mac will not boot from the HD that came out of the PPC Mac.
As far as OS 9, the new Intel Macs do not support OS 9 in any way. You cannot boot them into OS 9 and you cannot run Classic on the Intel machines.
I'm sure this will lead to further questions. Hope we are making progress.
    Regards,
    Steve M.

  • Installed new SSD boot drive, Time Machine won't backup

I installed a new 240 GB SSD boot drive (cloned using Super Duper) in my Mac Pro and want to use it as my startup disk. When I boot up using the new 240 SSD drive and try to start Time Machine to back it up onto a 500GB external drive it tells me it failed because the estimated backup size is over 2 TB. I suspect that Time Machine still has the last backup from my old boot drive, which was a 3TB hard drive. I go to Options and tell it not to back up any of my other hard drives but that doesn't help. So now what? How can I get rid of the last backup, which was from my 3 TB hard drive, so that I can backup a 240 GB SSD on a 500 GB external drive? Or is it another problem? Help!! Thanks!!

Problem solved, wasn't using Options/Exclude items properly.

  • Will the late 2013 Mac Pro boot from an external drive (4Tb, USB 3) with a cloned Win7 x64 partition on it?

    Hello all,
I ordered a CTO Mac Pro for heavy rendering and animating work, and I am planning on using bootcamp to install a windows partition (for 3DsMax). As I am now using a HP Elitebook 8770W that has several valuable files and projects on it, I have bought a Seagate 4Tb external Desktop Drive that uses USB 3.0 to use as a backup drive. Now, as I saw that Bootcamp Assistant only supports installing a x64 version of Windows 8, my question is:
Will a late 2013 Mac Pro using bootcamp assistant boot from an external USB drive with a cloned partition running x64 win7? Or do I really have to buy Windows 8 and install that to my internal SSD, and then use the migration assistant to copy over my projects?
    Thanks!

Posted? or found in new builds?
BCA should really just pull whatever the latest drivers are when run.
If it is with how it partitions and sets up nMP and its partition for Windows that is another matter and makes sense.
Some people want UEFI native booting in Windows, and my experieince with that on PCs has been that it boots faster and runs well, but has different partitions that it wants. For one thing, there is now a backup "system reserved" partition, just as Apple GUID has some volume information blocks and backup and areas that were once optional (and if format erase was not able to, it would not create one) are now mandatory.
Windows 8.1 is req'd, reason a backup should be a big must - is it might overwrite and use another OS's  partition table entries.  Especially when doing UEFI install.
There was something about which linux OS was safe and how they would each add entries in the table, but one would not place nice.  That one had to be done first or not at all.

  • Can I boot from an external ssd via thunderbolt?

My MBP is super fast with an SSD second drive.
in my Imac, can I get that same speed if I boot from an external SSD drive through thunderbolt port? or would the ssd have to be inside the imac? I guess I want to know if the thunderbolt connection is slower than if I had the SSD inside the Imac?

Don't know if the Thunderbolt port is bootable but its speed exceeds the 6Gbs negotiated speed of SATA III drives.

  • Quicksilver G4 will not boot from a cloned firewire external drive.

    Hi all,
Just as the subject line says.  I know this is a problem for many PPC users.  I simply want to erase the HD so I can sell this Mac.  In order to do that, I need to boot from an external source.  I do not have the original disks that came with this system long ago.  I have Panther and Leopard disks (10.5 is the terminal OS for this non Intel based Mac)... but neither of them will boot this Mac... I've tried.  I've used a WD firewire drive as well as a Maxtor, but no luck.  I've cloned the entire internal drive using Super Duper, with the external HD first formatted to Mac extended format.  The system recognizes both drives and they even appear in the list of 'start up discs' but no matter what I choose or even 'option C' or 'command-option P-R' on start up, will not get this sucker to boot to anything else except the internal drive.  The Mac also has a second internal drive, which was wiped easily.  Is there any clever way I can make this work so I can erase the main drive and prepare the Mac for sale?  I've researched this a lot and for some reason, many of these PPC's are fussy about what type of external drive they will boot to.  My understanding is that Firewire is the only way to go.  Thanks... MIke

  • Boot from internal Fusion or external SSD?

My wife surprised me with the base level 5K iMac. It has the 1TB Fusion drive. I wish it had been upgraded to an SSD but it's too late now, I'm stuck with it. I self-upgraded to 32Mb RAM already.
To get the best performance, would you recommend using an external SSD as a startup/boot disk, and running everything - OS X, apps, etc - from there?
Would I see meaningful performance benefits, or should I just stick with the Fusion Drive?

Fusion is SSD (at least in part).
It combines the SSD with a spinning HD. I think you can opt to divide it into 2 separate disks if you are willing to reinstall the OS (or do some major juggling).
I think the OS installer will try to force a fusion drive on supported Macs, but you may be able to clone or restore to each disk instead.
You could buy a large SSD & run it from Thunderbolt if you want, but fusion is intended to put the most used files on the SSD with the rest on the HD.
Some people don't like Fusion since it uses Core storage (& is new and confusing). Personally I'd give it a go to see if it performs well enough.
