External Storage Question ....

I would like to get an external HDD for storing movies, photos, and music. I have a mix or purchased and my own content.
I am looking at these two drives:
G-Tech G-DRIVE 500GB FW400/800 Hard Drive
Western Digital My Book 500GB Pro Edition...
Can anyone help me sort through the ocean of options?
When I started looking, I thought I wanted an ethernet attached device so I could just attach it to my home router. But, it appears I can attach the drive to my airport extreme, which is acting as just a print server, and then connect the printer to the new hard drive. This solves the 'i only have one USB port on the old airport extreme' base station.
However, will my transfer rates suffer if I have wireless hop?
I don't need to hit the drive too often. I will do one big back-up, then incrementals each week.
There are no PC's on my network. Just two macbooks, and maybe a MacBook Pro or large mac destop (coming soon).
any help is appecriated.
-john

Most of the cheap NAS ethernet devices only support FAT32 formatted internal drives, which you access via a built-in SAMBA server. The maximum size of an individual file under this format is 4Gb. This is probably too small if you are using Apple's Backup, as this can easily create a file ten times this size. They are also slow, although you can usually connect them directly via USB as well. So you can do 'big' copies with them directly attached, and then less intensive use with them attached via NAS.
The Airport USB does not suffer from this 4Gb file limit problem, because it expects attached discs to be HFS+ format, the same as you mac. If you want to connect a printer at the same time you will need a USB hub, you can't 'daisy chain' USB the way you can with firewire. The hub must be USB 2.0 and preferably externally powered. With this setup you could connect the drive directly to your mac to do the first backup, and then attach it to the airport for subsequent 'incremental' backups, which would normally be much smaller. In fact if I were you I would first make a bootable copy of my mac hard disk to the (directly connected) external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, then run a full Apple Backup to the drive, then connect the drive to the airport for future use.
In practice I don't find much of a speed difference accessing network attached storage over wired 100Mb ethernet or airport extreme.
The above would be the easiest approach and would make best use of the stuff you already have available.
Another alternative would be to buy something like the Linksys NSLU2 as a slightly more capable file server - you can read more about it at my website http://www.zonko.ath.cx ! (Shameless plug!)

• How to set up external storage in Oracle VM?

Hi,
We have oracle VM server 2.1.2 installed with the Oracle DB vm, and will need the Oracle DB access the external storage for better I/O perf. We'd need to install SAS Raid controller driver and Raidman software to configure the storage array, firstly, my understanding is that we can't install the dirver and sw to a virtual machine(oracle db vm) but would need to install them on the Oracle VM server, then create raw disk file on it and add it into the disk parameter in the "vm.cfg", after restart the oracle db vm, we suppose to be able to format and create partition in the oracle db vm. Please let me know if my understanding of configuration procedure as above is correct.
Second question is: Do we suppose to download driver and Raidman software for the RedHat Enterprise Linux 5 platform? Can the driver/sw versions on the Redhat enterprise linux 5 be used on Oracle VM server 2.1.2?
Thanks in advance for your reply.
Jenny

If you are using OVM without a support license, you can try building the drivers from source. If you do have support for OVM, then open a Metalink SR to request the drivers you need. Adding drivers that were not originally included with OVM or provided for your OVM version by Oracle will void your support.

• How to connect external storage devices (flash drive) with it

hello dear. I am using this hp webOS-3.0.5 device for last 8 months. It is really a wonderful device to have. But I have some queries regarding it's usage. First can we attach any usb device(external storage devices (flash drive) with it? Second is there any other way to use internet on it without wi-fi connection? Thanks
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

I'm afraid the answer is No to both questions.
External storage can be acheived easily using the free 50GB Box.com account included with each touchpad. This does rely on a good wifi source however, which leads to your other question.
The wifi touchpad needs a wifi signal to go online. Modern cellphones can act as "wifi hotspots" and can translate a cellular data connection to wifi. (I do this with my Pre3 and a free program called "FreeTether", a homebrew app).

• RMBP 256GB+external storage or 512GB?

Here's the deal!
So Im set on buying my first macbook pro, and I went for the RMBP base model with 256GB HD.
I know that the macbook pro isnt really a gaming machine, hence the pro name and so on....
Main use would be some gaming, photoediting, video etc. Im planning on installing Win7 via bootcamp!(to keep my options open, gamewise)
All of a sudden Im a bit worried if I'm running out of space, and should have went for the 512GB capacity...(I know this can only be answered by me)
Questions:
1) Considering my setup with bootcamp and mainuse, should I really go for the 512GB of HD model instead? Im also considering that the OS takes up like 30GB with generic programs installed??...
2) ...Or, what's the best external storage option, If I want to take advantage of the Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 ports??? I could settle for 500-1TB of HD
(Not yet a millionaire, something in the range of 400USD max, would be pretty sweet)
ps. I looked at the LAcie 1TB porsche design 2.0 USB storage device? (but that wouldnt really benefit from the ports rite???)
3) What's the deal with Timecapsule??? Obviously transferspeeds are slower, but is it a must/wisebuy for a Mac Newbie???
Thnx!

1. I would have gone for the 512GB as you're stuck with what you order. The machine is not user upgradeable. If it's possible, change your order for 512GB.
2. You'll need at least one external drive for back-up. I recommend using Time Machine. Most people recommend an external drive that is 2-3x the size of your internal drive for TM back-ups, hence you'd need a 1-2 Terabyte external drive (for all things about Time Machine, click here). Thunderbolt drives are still far too expensive at this time, in my opinion, yet several people here have reported problems with some USB 3.0 external drives. Look for one from a reputable Mac drive company, such as LaCie or OWC. I would actually call both companies and see what they have in the way of USB 3.0 drives and see what they recommend.
3. Time Capsule is a nifty little back-up system, using Time Machine, that include Airport services. But I wouldn't want wireless back-up - for one reason, as you note, wireless back-ups are slow. There are thousands of happy TC users, but I'd just buy a fast USB 3.0 external. Not a must or wise buy in my opinion.
Hope this helps somewhat,
Clinton

• How do I set up external storage and a Time Machine backup?

I am trying to organize my external storage for a new iMac with an 500G SSD drive. I have a new thunderbolt G-Raid drive and an aging Airport Time Capsule. I was thinking of storing music and pictures, as well as a Time Machine backup of the SSD, and storing a Time Machine backup of my music and pictures on the Time Capsule. Is this reasonable? Will I need to partition the G-Raid? Are there any special issues of which I should be aware?

• Advice on 2TB external storage for 1080 DVCPRO HD footage

I'm trying to find the best external storage for editing on a 17" Macbook Pro.
I'll be working on a feature shot with the HVX-200 at 1080i/24pa. I'm figuring we'll need approximately 2TB of storage.
Are FW800 drives fast enough to edit 1080?
Is it possible to run a 2TB SATA raid off the ExpressCard?
And as a side question, is the Macbook Pro fast enough to handle 1080? (we haven't purchased the system yet). It sounds to me like it will be, but wanted to see if anyone had any real world experience with it.
To be honest, I know just enough about the brave new world of the HVX-200 to get myself in trouble, so bear with me.
Any advice on the drives, and even good vendors to get them from, is much appreciated.
17" Macbook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Why are you shooting 1080? This camera does best at
720p. And in fact, the files sizes will be very
small at 720p24...just 22GB/hour. And since the
chips are really ideal for 720p...I see no gain in
shooting 1080i.
But that is me.
I just finished a show that was a mix of Varicam and
HVX and I edited 720p, and output to 1080p, and it
looked great. Airing on TV this Friday. Sadly, in
Standard Def...
Shane
That's a good question. lol.
The director wants 1080 because there's potentially going to be a 35mm blowup at the end of all this. Depending on who you ask, I've heard 720 may lose anywhere from 10-30% resolution on blowup compared to 1080.
Though it's been a back and forth decision. He's not 100% sold on 1080 (especially because we're finding few people have done it with the HVX-200) and 720 sure makes the workflow much easier.
That's been a question we've been unable to find a good answer to, is shooting 1080i really that much better (to justify all the extra work in the process) than just shooting 720/24pn and doing an upres at the end?
how exactly are the chips ideal for 720p?
By the way, I've been reading your blog. It's one of the best sources I've found out on the net for this stuff... Keep up the good work.

• Some storage question !!!

Hi al
Customer ask me some question and hope that some specialist can help me:
1) Is ST6000 support RAID migration from any RAID type to any RAID type?
2) Can I upgrade firmware non-disruptively in ST6000 ? In some presentation slide about ST6000, I see can, but I think it can not and we have to reboot storage controller after upgrade.
3) Sun ST9000 support virtualization and can control storage from other vendors, but what is the list of storage from other vendor that it can support ?
4) Sun ST9900: With Virtual Storage Machine, we can create virtual storage with some resource (cache, I/O, disk) but can we re-assign (add/remove) resource online without data lost and non-disruptively ?
5) Sun ST9900: Can we create a LUN with disk resource spread in several external storage of different vendor ?
Thanks all

Hello,
1) Yes, however the following applies:
■There can be only one VDisk in a Pool, if you are changing the level at the pool level
■There can only a single volume in a VDisk, if you are changing the level at the volume level
■Migrations to a RAID 1+0 require an even number of drives
■The volume sizes remain unchanged, so a migration from a RAID 5+1 to 3+3 would require that the volumes can be contained within the space of 3 drives of the original 5+1 VDisk
2) Yes for controller firmware, No for disk firmware. If it is a dual-controller array (with multi-pathing properly configured), then you can do one controller at a time, while the first controller reboots, it will fail over to the remaining controller on the redundant path. Disk firmware will REQUIRE down time however..
Hope this helps,
Sean

• Sun Cluster requires external storage or it works without that also

Hi,
I have to implement sun clustering on V880 servers but we have only purchased single external storage box (storedge 3510) but we need to prepare 3 clusters of two nodes each ( means in total 6 servers).
So my question is whether it is possible to create a cluster without the external storage device.
Regards
Khushvinder

Khush,
If you refer back to my earlier posting, its confimed that you need a external storage for a 2 node cluster. The external storage acts as the quorum device.
Ofcourse you can get away with external storage provided you have support with Sun.Sun has got an internal hack to get away with multihost ,again it depends whether they are willing to share it.(My guess they wouldn`t...they can sell more storage instead)

• External storage icon comes up when I launch MSN messenger?

When I launch MSN an icon representing an external storage device always comes up on the desktop. Why is this happening? It also happenes when I launch Firefox.
Thanks for the help.

Hi, Steve. Welcome to the Discussions.
1. Have you installed the MSN Messenger and FireFox apps within your Applications folder, or are you running them from within disk images you've downloaded to your desktop? What you describe almost sounds like you're opening a disk image on the desktop, which mounts the image as a virtual hard drive ("storage icon" per your description).
1.1. What's the name of the "storage icon"?
1.2. What happens if you double-click the "storage icon"? For example, I'd expect it would open in Finder, so what is contained therein?
2. You might want to search or post on the "Microsoft Messenger for Mac" group you can find on the Microsoft Mac Support - Newsgroups page. These are Google Groups with active participation from MS product users, including a variety of expert users.
I don't mean to send you somewhere else, but I've found numerous answers there for folks with questions related to MS products. Accordingly, it has often proved to be the first, best place to look for answers to questions such as you are asking.
Good luck!

• How to use AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only?

I have a new AirPort Time Capsule 3TB, now I want to use my AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only, how do I it?
I would like to connect the AirPort Time Capsule 2TB directly to my Mac Pro. using OS X 10.7.5.
I have erase disk and reset the 2TB to factory default, after that, I cannot make it to connect to my Mac. Please help.

The 2TB Time Capsule needs to connect to your 3TB Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
Connect from a LAN <--> port on the 3 TB Time Capsule to the WAN "O" port on the 2 TB Time Capsule and configure the 2TB Time Capsule in Bridge Mode and turn off the wireless function on the device as well.
Once that is done, you can connect your Mac directly to the 2TB Time Capsule using another Ethernet cable, or your Mac can connect to the network using the normal wireless network, if you prefer.

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

• Using a Mac Pro G5 as external storage

So I recently bought a power mac g5 tower for $35 (I cant believe i got it for that cheap and It runs perfectly!) but now that i have it Im trying to find a use for it since i already have a mac pro 8 core and a new macbook pro. So im trying to find some way to put it to use, since it is a power mac im not gonna run any programs on it even though i have thought of running snow leopard on. I was talking to a friend and he said I could set it up so i can use it as external storage for my mac pro but im not sure if this is possible since it is a power mac and my mac pro is intel based. Could i set it up as a External storage unit and use it as like i would any other external hard drive you can buy? Im sorry if this doesnt make sense.
And just one little side note my friends company is selling a ton of their Xserve G5 cluster nodes and i was wondering if you could use these to create a computer cluster or use them for storage also.
Thanks for your help,
John
Oh and if anyone has any other cool ideas of what i can use it for im open to any ideas

You can't run Snow Leopard on it. Snow Leopard requires an Intel processor. The newest you can run is Leopard 10.5.8
Try turning on sharing and see if you see the drives from your Mac Pro.

Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air? I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

Hi CJR
I'm not sure how Time Capsule can be replicated onto your external drive but there is a USB port on the back of TC that can be hooked up to any recent external drive.
Another thing to think about , besides a Time Capsule failure, is the theft of your Time Capsule, so it might be a good idea to consider separating any redundant back-up from your Time Capsule or both my be stolen.
TC will back up until full and then begin deleting the oldest back-ups. Mine is a 2TB Time capsule.
My back-up plan is as follows:
1. Macbook Air back-up on Time Capsule though Time Machine backs up everything - I think it's about every 30 min or so.
2. Contacts, reminders, appointments, notes, email are backed up through iCloud.
3. iTunes and non-itunes purchased music is on iMatch (and no need to back-up) and any non-iTunes music is backed up on an HP external drive (in case Time Capsule dies)
4. Photos are on my MacBook Air and are backed up on my HP external drive.
5. Office documents (Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) are stored in a Skydrive app (like iCloud) and Skydrive syncs these docuemnts with the MS cloud and my old PC and does not alter their native format like storing in iCloud would do.
Cheers
