External Synth Midi Sync

Hi im having trouble doing this. i have followed the very helpful sflogicninja's tutorials: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iS_YS-waARU&feature=channel. dispite his help i am still yet to successfully set up my microkorg so midi is synced correctly (am i right in assuming i should be able to change the korgs programs ect from within logic?) i have a fast track pro sound card and both midi i/o are plugged in via 5 pin midi cables. and the microkorg works fine in controlling other software synth's within logic...any help and advice on what i may be doing wrong here would be greatly appriciated! thanks lolly

do you actually mean "sync"? that would imply that you are trying to make 2 or more MIDI sequencers to play together. Are you just trying to have the ability to send MIDI messages to the korg from logic? if so, and you are cabled correctly, you need to set the MIDI channels to match in logic and the korg. Look to see what midi channel and port the logic MIDI channel strip you have selected is set to. Make sure that the Korg is on the right port and is assigned to the correct channel. Then if you look in the inspector you should see a program change check box.

  • Why won't MainStage send program change MIDI to external synths

One of the main reasons i moved to mainstage was the ability to seanlessly use both the mainstage sounds plus the internal sounds in my hardware synths . Since i upreaded to mainstage 3 i cant send program change MIDI to external synths ... I really need to have this resolved . it is critical

Seems to be working for me.  I can send in a program change, and the external instrument channel strip will send out the correct program change.
I did notice that new patches I added have their own program change number, so I had to set it to what I wanted (for the mainstage patch itself, under attributes).
So, starting from the begining, I :
    - added an External Instrument channel to my existing MS patch
    - I set the output of that new channel to the correct midi output device
    - I selected the ext. instr. channel and then went to the inspector->MIDI Output tab and checked the box "Send Program Change" and I selected a prog. change number
I monitored this output using MIDI Monitor and it all looked correct.
    I hope this helps...

  • Feature Request: Support for External Synths/Modules (via MIDI)

    Hi,
I just posted a feature request (via the Apple Feature Request form) but also wanted to post here. I use a combination of hardware instruments (sound modules) and software instruments.
    *My Setup*
    - Keyboard #1: M-Audio Axiom 25 (also includes a USB MIDI interface)
    - Keyboard #2: Roland A-33 Controller Keyboard (via my Axiom-25's MIDI In)
    - Edirol USB MIDI Interface (sound modules plugged into MIDI Outs)
    - Sound Module #1: Roland JV-1080
    - Sound Module #2: Yamaha TX802
MainStage currently takes care of all my software instrument needs, however, what is missing is the ability to add external physical MIDI devices as either patches or as channel strips. I would like to use a combination of software and hardware instruments in the same song, and control this via Mainstage.
    Example:
    - Patch 1 could potentially contain 2 software instruments, each seperately controlled by a physical keyboard (this is currently possible)
    - Patch 2 could contain 1 software instrument and 1 external sound module each controlled by a physical keyboard (this is currently impossible)
    - Patch 3 could contain 2 external sound modules, mapped to different ports and/or channels, and therefore independantly controlled by my 2 keyboads (this is also currently impossible)
Would I be correct in assuming that this is a fairly common limitation of MainStage?

I have achieved MIDI out from Mainstage, thank to the information found on this forum..
what I actually do is send Prg Change from every preset I select to control a hardware vocal harmony pedal. this way i don't have to remember which setting i use on every song or even, section of a song.
    *Step 1:*
Library>application support>Logic> create a folder named precisely MAINSTAGE CALLBACKS
inside of it, create an applescript with this code
    on action(parameter)
set myprogramchange to programchangenumber of parameter
    tell application "MidiPipe"
    MIDISend toPort "MidiPipe AppleScript Input" withData {192, myprogramchange}
    end tell
    end action
    *step 2*
    download MIDIPIPE from http://homepage.mac.com/nicowald/SubtleSoft/
and install it in your apps folder
    *step 3*
start midipipe, and define the following modules
MIDI IN-> use applescript input from menu
MIDI OUT-> route to your midi interface desired output
save this to a Midipipe file you can easily access
Now, when I go to a gig I FIRST (this is important) load midipipe and my preset, and just hide it and let it work in the background
Start mainstage, and set the program change of every PATCH to what I want to be sent over MIDI OUT when I enter the preset (-1 if needed or modify the previous applescript).
Ok, this just gives you Prg change... if you want something like CC or others, you can look at some of the example files on midipipe, and write your own applescripts to be used from a control within mainstage (you know, select a screen control, and assign it to an applescript located in library>application suport>logic>Mainstage scripts. you have to tell the applescript to receive incoming data from mainstage and send it (with even some filtering or transforming) to midipipe to go to the outside world.
One last idea: i used a free plug-in called MIDIIO that, although the plugin analysis on mainstage might say does not pass, you can use it anyway, and lets you insert it as if it was a plugin instrument...then you just route your screen controller to a MIDI parameter on that track, and there you go...but in the past it was not as solid as the midipipe solution.
I am still investigating...I am pursuing having my hardware controller knobs to follow screen settings everytime I just change a patch, but lack some info on how to get parameter values when entering the patch ¿anyone knows, blueberry, zuelito...? I promise to share the results!

  • Using an external synth like the KORG SD50 with GB3

(for the veterans of synth sequencing etc )
been researching getting a keyboard ( not just a midi controller which is what i have now ) but one that has modern sounds and i can play (also ) without having the computer on. If i have GB recording since there is no midi out there is no syncing and so if i wish to record some of the sounds of the external synth it will need to be on a real track ( audio in ) as if it were a voice a guitar etc..
The KORG S50 which has wonderfully expressive programs/combos that arpegiate some with drum beats bass. In other words when the key is struck the drum beat starts or a bass might play and a musical phrase is played with a back up beat/rhythmic sound. So if i run the count down of GB3 i assume that i can play the external device in time with GB's sequencer or can I? If its not midi then will it sync to the proper time if i record it onto a real track? In other words will GB3 allow a recording of an external instrument that has its own timing? I hope im clear here.

im afraid HT is right again
midi yes will work but GB has no midi out
you cant have two time clocks in GB
and you cant have midi sync
and you cant have midi out
i have found that audio loops thrown in to GB pieces if not too long seem to work fine
IM bummed here because i want to use a korg X50 which has arpeggiated wonderful voices/programs/combis that have their own groove tempo. This cannot work with GB unless you audio in the sequence but it wont sync up in GB.
im waiting to here if LExpress will do this & if so im gonna have to hit the learning curve my wallet and change my attitude!

  • Recording audio from an external synth - please help!

    Hi
I have an Alesis audio/midi firewire interface and a korg triton and in logic i have recorded the midi data and now need to record the audio into an audio track.
I solo the midi track and arm the audio track for recording, i have set the audio track for input 1 and when the midi notes are played the audio track responds so i know there is a signal but when i hit record, the midi track plays and the metronome sounds as it goes along but nothing is recorded!
Please could someone tell me what i am doing wrong??
    Thanks in advance
    Nick

So let me clarify what I think you are wanting to do. Are you wanting to control the External Synth with the MIDI data coming out of Logic and then running the audio from the Synth back into Logic as an audio track?

  • Sysex dump not affecting external synth

I'm having a surprising amount of trouble finding the answer to something so simple. I have an external synth controllable via SysEx commands (a Yamaha FB-01 specifically) and I want it to load/select a particular set of non-default instruments whenever a given project loads.
Loading and selecting instruments works just fine through use SysEx Librarian, so it's not the hardware or the connection at fault.
I have the synth set up using the external synth plugin, and I can send MIDI data to it for playing notes in real time just fine. Adding SysEx info to the arrange window on this track just doesn't seem to do anything. Have I got the set up incorrect? Logic seems to be able to record dumps correctly, just not send them.
A related bonus question; Is SysEx data low-latency enough that it can be used to automate parameters of the synth, such as changing an oscillator's properties in real time?
    Thanks very much in advance.

I'll take the bonus question: a simple Note-On event is 3 bytes long. This takes 960ms and of course considered real-time. Sysex events are longer: 7 bytes or longer, depending on the device for a single parameter. You can do the math for you device... Warning: some SysEx dumps can be several KB large - that is clearly no longer real-time!

  • Logic and external synths

Hi! This is basically a pre-sales tech question.
I'm looking to run Logic Studio on a new MacBook. I'm getting that out of the way since my profile says I'm currently a Windows user.
I have a very nice bank of hardware synths. I don't want to moth-ball them with the purchase of a new system, since they sound better than Logic's internal software synth sounds (which I previewed at my local music store).
So my question is: Is Logic user-friendly when it comes to accessing sounds on external synthesizers? In the early 90's I used a setup with point-and-click access to external sythesizers. I don't remember which program, but it may have been Cubase. There was a lovely drop-down menu where I could select the Oboe from my Proteus/2, or a drum kit from my Korg 05/RW.
There must be lots of Logic Studio users out there using external hardware synths, right? Is this an easy thing to do?
    Thanks in advance.

I highly doubt you will ever go to total 'software' synths and sounds dude! I'm still finding 'golden' sounds from my early 90's gear! Sure, we all love the ease and convenience of software but as others here have stated... once you 'enable' Logic to send MIDI data it becomes part of your normal routine. Sometimes even ONE sound from an external synth can make your project, right? Go for it man. The wealth of info Apple provides ' right in the box' (manuals?... oh ya dude!) makes learning easy! ~King

  • Using an external synth, want to route audio visibly in logic

    Hey
So - in the early days of logic 5.5 i distinctly remembering that i had external synths, which i routed through logic, so that i could 1) Pick a midichannel that gave me the corresponding channel on the synth (like part 1), and 2) I could see a visible fader, with the EXACT same look and options on it, as any normal audio channel. Ie. i could put plugins on it, and so on.
however, ive gotten a Waldorf Blofeld af my first external synth, for use with my logic pro 8, and while i can play it using a midi keyboard, and i can see a channel for it, then the channel that it creates, is sort of a fader, with only pan settings, and rev + chorus. Ie. i cant record it, i cant use plugins on it. Furthermore ( but this may be a problem with a setting on my soundcard ? (a motu 828mkII if anyone happens to know how to fix it ) when i pan the reverb it doesnt pan at all, the sound stays in stereo. The volume fader however works fine.
So my question is: Can someone - please- explain to me, how to set it up "fully". Meaning a guide to creating the multi instrument ( as im guessing it should be ) and linking that to an audio channel in my environment, which i can then record, and use plugins on?
I sincerely hope for a fast and hopefully correct answer as this has been bugging me for two days now. Ive read alot of stuff in the manual, but cant figure it out.

You distinctly remember wrong (or at least, you're forgetting how you did it). A MIDI track has a MIDI channel strip, an audio object has an audio chanel strip that passes audio and can have audio plugins on it. You can't have one MIDI track with audio processing, as MIDI has nothing whatsoever to do with audio.)
What you probably did before is had a MIDI track feeding your MIDI instrument, but then had it's audio coming back into your audio interface and coming up in the mixer in realtime using an "Input" audio object.
however, ive gotten a Waldorf Blofeld af my first external synth, for use with
my logic pro 8, and while i can play it using a midi keyboard, and i can see

Yes, that's a channel strip for MIDI instruments - nothing to do with audio, it sends MIDI volume, pan and other GM messages over MIDI to control remote MIDI devices.
So my question is: Can someone - please- explain to me, how to set it up "fully".
Meaning a guide to creating the multi instrument ( as im guessing it should be )

If you specifically need multitimbral output, then you should create a multi instrument in the environment, set up to the MIDI ports/channel, and create arrange tracks for each of the (up to) 16 parts.
(The External Instrument plugin isn't much good for multitimbral or multioutput instruments).
That handles the MIDI side. Now, you want to bring that instrument's audio back into Logic's mixer, so plug the audio into your audio interface, either in stereo, or more channels if you have them to spare. Then you can either create Audio Input objects, or use regular audio tracks in input monitor mode, to add the audio coming in from the instrument in realtime to the mix, where you can also process with plugins etc.
Note that you won't be able to offline bounce with real instruments, as Logic can't speed up the universe to faster than realtime...

  • Recording knob and slider movements from an external synth in a good way

How do I record the knob and fader movements made on an external synth into Logic in a good way?
I have managed to do it but Logic writes a new region over the top of the region containing my midi notes. When I stop recording the new region which contains the CC data disappears behind the region containing the midi notes.
On top of this, once I've moved the regions around so I can select the one containing the CC data I can't see anything for it in the Hyper editor (though I know the changes have been recorded as it plays back.)
Any guidance would be much appreciated.

I often make a duplicate of my Midi track/Software Instrument track (assigned to the same Audio object - standard KC for this is shift+Return) beneath the original track and then record fader and knob movements on the duplicated track.
In the Piano Roll->view->Hyper Editor select Modulation/Pitch bend or "Other" and choose a Midi Controller number frome the menue which opens, the selected Controller (e.g.#21) will be displayed underneath the Piano Roll and you can edit it with your pointer/pencil/Eraser tool.

  • Using the firebox/ to record an external synth via audio outs and a USB Mic

I have the following set up:
    firebox Firewired to the QuaD.
ALL audio in and out is PRESONUS FIREBOX
    in GB prefs/sound/audio midi utility
will i be able to record vocals with the USB samson
    and add
an external synth coming in to channels 1/2 in the front of the Firebox 1/2 channels
and ofcourse use GB as the recording studio and use this all together.
the outs in the back of the Firebox go to a minidisc whose audio outs go to monitors so that i can record what i do in case genius strikes me fiddling around
    as we all do.
so 1 Firebox, Firewire, Samson Mic ( USB ) GB 08 , minidisc, monitors
with all drivers to PResonus together.
i notice in audio midi i needed to change to device not mac to rid static
Is this a plausible set up?
    can this work:
The synth is taking up 1 real track ( i set monitor on and mono presonus track )
the samson mic is taking up another real track
can i hear record the synth and sing at the same time with them on both tracks
Chris said use aggregate in the midi audio
i do not understand how to do that and what that means?
would someone be kind enough to explain this?
please take it a step at a time.
i essentially want everything working at the same time
    external synths/usb mics/Gband/external recording/monitors
    using the presonus firebox
    thanks for your time
    bless u all
someone mentioned using aggregate in the audio midi utility.

Funny you should say that. It used to work fine, then suddenly last night it stopped working in the line-in jack. It's crazy, I'm not sure what the deal is, still trying to figure out what happened.
    Cheers,
    Jose

  • MidiO  to drive external synth sequencer

does anyone have any experience with this at all.
I have crossed my fingers hoping Apple would add midi out to GB so that GB could add and expand to play external synth sounds thru midi. AUDIO Is another thing alltogether. Getting the timing right and having the ext synth sound play in time with GB's sequencer would i think make GB more powerful than ever.
Has anyone successfully done this and what is the set up?
i have GB08 10.5.5 but will upgrade or do anything to have this possibility.
    gl

just sold a korg top of the line
but will consider buying a lesser model if this midiO really works
i thought others would have some experience
    few here ever do
    will post at logic too

  • Audio/MIDI Sync Errors

After working perfectly for months, I now am getting audio MIDI Sync error messages. The result is no audio output either from audio instruments or recorded audio. I am using a MOTU 896HD and audio thru itunes works as long as Logic is not running at the same time. If I switch to built in audio it seems to play back fine.

    Stever,
There's a few posts on this over at the Sonikmatter forums.
    Two things were recommended.
Toggle the internal clock to ADAT then back to internal.
If that doesn't help, unplug the unit (electricity and firewire) then toggle the voltage selector switch, (putting it back to there it was of course).
After doing this, flip the clock to ADAT then back to internal.
The idea is to reset the unit.
    Post back if this works...

  • Recording external synth/drum machine - What should the highest peak be?

    Hi,
When recording the audio from an external synth/drum machine what should the highest peak be? At the moment I have been recording as loud as possible without clipping but is it better to leave a few DB of headroom if using compressors etc afterwards?
    Thanks for the help.

It is good practice with all audio tracking to have it peaking at around -6. I sometimes aim for around -9 when tracking.
make sure you are recording at 24bit. Your peeks can be -18 and you wouldn't suffer too much.

  • MOTU 828MK2 picking up MIDI sync noise from Emagic AMT8???

Probably not an actual Logic problem, as it happens anytime an audio application 'initializes' and contacts my AMT8, but since theres no forum for the AMT8 Apple swallowed up from Emagic, and the drivers only come with Logic, figured I would ask here..
So recently Ive noticed my MOTU 828MK2 picks up the digital noise whenever I send MIDI sync to my AMT8 MIDI interface. If I sync just the MOTU's built in MIDI ports, nada nothing its dead quiet.. The minute sync goes to any port on the AMT8, theres that clock noise coming into my monitors (thankfully it doesnt go into Logic).. Ive checked the back of my desk and nothing is anywhere remotely close to my monitors cabling, the AMT8 is rackmounted literally right under the Furman power strip its plugged into and the adaptor is all by itself sitting right underneath. Tried a new USB cable plugged into different ports even, still picking up that noise.
It has not always been like this, Ive just noticed this behavior within the last few months so Im not sure where to go from here.. If anyone has any ideas of what to look at it Id be much obliged..
    HW specs if it matters:
    Mac Pro 1,1/OS 10.7.5/Logic 9.1.8
    MOTU 828MK2 (Firewire)
    AMT8 (USB)
All using the current drivers and latest versions of whatever they need to..

Have you tried initializing the 828MK2?
What's plugged into the AMT8? Have you tried removing MIDI cables one by one and testing?

I had an iPod Classic 5th Gen that I upgraded from 30gb to 80gb.  The problem I'm having is that it will not sync more than about 5.4gb worth of songs.  The iPod begins to freeze mid sync and the (-69) error message haults the sync process.  The hard drive has been upgraded, it has a new logicboard (with 128mb RAM), new housing, battery, hold / headphone jack.  Basically the only original parts are the bezel, click wheel, screen, and data ribbons. Have attempted the 3Rs and have also tried to isolate potentially corrupt audio files and remove them, but this did not seem to be the primary cause.  The sync failure consistently happens at just under a 1000 songs (5.4gb) and then it starts to error (-69) any song after that.  Your advise would be enthusiastically received.

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.
