External (Time Machine) HD won't mount
I have an external Hard Disk (CnMemory, 1.5 TB, USB 3.0), partitoned as 1TB MS-DOS-Fat, ½TB Mac OS Extended. The HD has been working for months as Time Backup for my MacBookPro, the other as Data Backup for Windows and OS/X (Maverick).
Suddenly the both partitions of the HD won't mount under OS/X. When connect to my MacBookPro (or iMac) both Volumes are visible in DiskUtil (Grey-out) and with the Mount-Point 'Not-Mounted'.
When I try to Verify the disk, the utility says it needs to be repaired. When I try to repair the disk:
What am I suppose to do now?
I have an update about this problem which solved my problem. I attached th Extern HD to my windows 8 computer. As metioned above I can reach the windows partition, not the OS/X partition.
After saving the windows data on another place, I tried to create one partition for windows. This failed on the format, which after 6 hours of no progress I canceled. and I safely removed the HD from the windows computer.
Now I was able to mount the computer and I made 2 partitions using my macBookPro.
Nice, but not everyone has a windows computer available. So my problem solved, but the real problem stays...

Time Machine Drive won't mount, mounts on windows
Hi guys, I have a Seagate GoFlex Desk for Mac, it's a 2TB external Firewire 800 and USB 2.0 drive.
My machine is a 2011 iMac 27" i7 16GB RAM 2TB HD
I use the external drive for my Time Machine Backup, my mac had to be brought in to have the display replaced so i did a backup before i brought it to the service center.
After getting the mac back i noticed my time machine drive was not showing on the desktop so i tried doing a time machine backup but i got an error that there was not TM drive.
I ran Disk utility and it shows the drive with the Time machine partitioned grayed out and at the bottom "Mount Point : Not mounted", i tried mounting it from DU but nothing, i did a verify disk and right away i got a message that the disk needs to be repaired. I ran the repair but DU would get stuck trying to unmount the disk.
I tried restarting my computer, and i changed to other firewire cables i had using the firewire port and using the thunderbolt to firewire adaptor but no luck, also i tried USB.
Then i tried it on my windows partition with USB and it showed on windows, i was able to recover my data but i couldn't delete any from the drive, when i tried deleting anything i got a message that said "the files are too big" or something like that, I also tried formating the drive on windows but no luck with that.
I have no idea what's going on, the drive won't mount and it can't be ejected even though it's recognized (the time machine partition is grayed out)
Any suggestions? i really don't want to throw it away and if do i would at least like to wipe it out.

Tha's kind of a last ditch effort though. Can you put it in another mac computer with the mac os? Does it show up there? -
Time Machine EHD won't mount after update to 10.6.7
I recently upgraded to OS X 10.6.7. Yesterday, my Time Machine backup failed and the LaCie EHD that I use for my backups won't mount anymore. My husband was able to see the EHD on his PC, so I don't think it's a problem with the drive. I suspect that it has to do with the OS update. Any suggestions?
If you have a desktop computer: Unplug it from the outlet and anything plugged into the firewire/usb ports, leave it that way for 45 seconds minimum check it again and see if it mounts in disk utility
If you have a laptop do one of these two steps and post back if it mounts:
Removable battery: Remove battery, disconnect charger(power adapter), hold down power button for 5 seconds, put back in battery should resolve
Embedded (non removable) battery: plug in the power adapter/charger, turn off computer, hold down on the LEFT side of the keyboard Shift-Control-Option. While your holding all of these press the power button once, let go of just the power button. Two seconds or so later let go of the rest of the buttons, you'll know this step was successful if it didn't turn on.
If it doesn't or does show up also post back your answer to this:
Click on the Apple icon in the top left hand corner, click on About This Mac, click on More Info. Then Click on Firewire or USB (Depending what type of connection your EXHD has) if you see it in the right it's a recognized device, just not mounting, give me a heads up whether you do or don't see it there. -
I have an iMac that had drive problems last winter. Took the iMac to the Apple Store and they reinstalled everything and now it works again. Only thing is that my external Time Machine drive is screwed up now. Its 1.5 TB.
I had the Time Machine drive partioned into two parts. One partion was for an emergency bootup using carbon copy cloner. That partion I can open and mounts on my desktop. The other partion was Time Machine. It once upon a time opened and mounted without a password.
It requests a password to unlock even though I never had it password protected before the iMac drive problems. And so now it won't mount the drive.
I can go to Disk Utilities and I can see Time Machine with both partions. The Carbon Copy partion is mounted. The Time Machine partion is not mounted. For this reason I can't select it and erase it.
What the heck am I supposed ot do now to erase it and start over. Any help would be appreciated. I really don't want to go and buy another drive.

My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you think it is? It won't recognize any hard drive I put in the machine, so might it be the sata cable?
Boot the Recvoery USB, use Disk Utility to select the internal drive makers namea and size on the left.
Now select erase and select the midde option and click erase, it will take a bit to complete but it's best for the drive.
Now select Partiton tab, click the big box and Options: GUID and then Format: OS X Extended journaled and click apply.
Quit and you should be able to install OS X now with your Apple ID and password.

Time Machine Problems - Won't Launch Automatically, Won't Mount Disk Image

I have a MacBook Pro (Mid 2009) running OSX Mavericks 10.9.2. I've had Time Machine running successfully with a 2TB Time Capsule for some time. Recently, I reinstalled Parallels VM software and have been having issues with Time Machine ever since. Initially, I had TM backing up the Virtual Machine, but decided that wasn't a great way to go, so turned it off in the VM configurations pane.
Since then, however, I have been unable to successfully back up my MacBook. I notice a few things:
The Time Machine drive does not mount as it used to. It does not show up on my desktop.
When I go into Time Machine Preferences, the drive does not show the usual green disk icon. The icon is blue and has the stick-figure people on it.
I can remove the blue disk drive, and re-select the drive. It stays green for about 30 seconds, then converts to the blue icon.
I get a number of plist errors in the Time Machine dashboard app. Here's the latest feed:

At this point, I'm a bit stumped. I've tried deleting the old sparsebundle, I've reset the Time Capsule, and I've come up with no ideas as to how I can get this woring again. It seems like the property list needs 'something' but can't find the old file or the property list is corrupt or something. I'm assuming that is why the Time Machine disk image won't mount?
Thanks for your help - suggestions are welcome!1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

External time machine drive no longer being automatically recognized
Recently my RMBP has stopped recognizing my external time machine drive. When ever I connect my 1 TB WD drive to my mac, it shows up on my desktop as usually but will not get recognized by time machine. I used to be able to connect the drive, have it show up on my desk with the orange USB logo, and then it would be auto recognized and the time machine logo would appear on it and it would start backing up. Now, I connect it and it just stays at the orange USB logo. I have to go to the time machine menu bar icon and open time machine's preferences and manually select the drive to get it to back up. This happens both on battery power and while I'm charging. I have already verified the disk in disk utility and have repaired as well. I don't recall when this started happening. I was running the 10.9.4 beta before its public release, but it hadn't been working before I upgraded to that either.
This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including exclusions. The backups won't be affected. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the exclusion list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, do as follows.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy the file to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Restart the computer and recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane. It will show that you have no backups. Don't worry; your backups haven't been touched. Run a backup to test. The backup may take much longer than usual. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. -
My MacBook w/ OSX 10.6.8 cannot access my external Time Machine Backup USB Drive. It says it is a Read Only drive. When I went to change permissions I found all pernissions were listed as "Custom" and I could not reset them to "Read Write". Any help would be appreciated.
This can be done easily with ethernet.
Please follow the instructions strictly.
To make it easier I want you to do this overnight so you can turn off all your current connection to the internet.
Just go to the airport fan in to the top right and turn airport off.
Get ethernet cable and connect the laptop to the TC lan port.. ie <-> ones.
Press and hold the reset on the TC for about 10sec. until the front led flashes rapidly.
Open the airport utility.. go to manual setup and change the wireless to off. (so other people around you cannot join your network of one).
Ignore all the errors.. they won't stop the backup working.
Go to the TM and reselect the backup target disk as the TC.
It should start after 2min and run through to completion.
That is it.. for a backup of many GB it might take a few hours.. so make sure the laptop has power plugged in and the sleep is off.. (on early ones I think this is needed but I am a late arrival to the scene).. sleep doesn't affect later OS. -

Yes, the external drive has to be formatted correctly to HFS+ and shared to the network.
It doesn't matter how the second machine logs into the network but wireless back will be extremely slow as it will involve double hop wireless, I presume to a wifi router somewhere. For incremental backups this is no biggie but do the initial backup with the drive plugged into that particular computer or over ethernet.. gigabit for preference.

Lion can't find my external Time Machine Drive
Anyone having a problem with Lion identifying the external Time Machine drive? When I go to Time Machine set up all I get is "Set Up other Time Capsule". Connections seem OK and drive is on and worked fine previous to the upgrade.
Any ideas?Is the drive a USB or FireWire external HD, or a network drive (NAS)?
If it's a NAS, it needs an update. See #C16 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If it's an external HD, try repairing it, per #A5 in that same link. -

External Time Machine Disk Will Not Unmount
This past weekend I did clean installs of Lion on new SSD drives in my MacBook and MacPro. The MacBook backs up to a Time Capsule with Time Machine and is working perfectly. The MacPro backs up fine and says the backup is completed but it will not unmount the external Time Machine disk I use for the backup after completion. This was not a problem using the same setup with Snow Leopard. I looked at the Console which says Backup completed successfully. Any idea what is going on with this? Thanks in advance.

Wait a minute . . . I missed that before.
Is that disk connected directly to the Mac? If so, no, Time Machine doesn't unmount directly-connected drives after a backup, only sparse bundles on network drives. -
My external Time Machine disk is almost full. I know TM is supposed to erase the oldest back-ups to make room for newer ones but is it safe for me to just erase the back-ups from 2 or so years ago to make room for TM as well as anything else I might want to add to this external drive?
Time Machine makes room for backups as necessary in a complex and sophisticated fashion, and it's not something to mess with lightly. However there are instructions at the bottom of this link which tell you how you can.
