External USB 3.0 HD not recognised on Kirabook

Just got my Kirabook, i7 touchscreen, everything is perfect but for 1 thing: my external hard drive - WD My Passport 500 GB USB 3.0 is not being recognised, no matter which USB port I am using. It is not showing in the device manager also or any other screens. Is it a problem with the power of USB ports?
Same disk is recognised perfectly on my old Sony Vaio Z...
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Just got my Kira and having a huge issue with this.  USB 3.0 drives showing up in Device Manager but not mounting.  Only 1 out of 3 types of USB 3.0 drives my office is using is mounting.  Drives which don't work are:
Hitachi Touro Pro USB 3.0 500GB
LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 / Thunderbolt 1TB
Those drives works pefectly under Win 7 and Mac OS.
I am not sure if the Hitachi is compatible or not with Win 8 but the LaCie is said to be Win 8 compatible on LaCie's product page.  Looks like a hardware compatibility, may be a BIOS update or mother board USB comptroller update will resolve.
Tech support is on it, hopefully, they'll find a solution quick.  I can't use my Kira without support for those drives

  • USB 3.0 port not recognising USB 3.0 external HDD

My HP Envy 14 Spectre does not recognise my new USB 3.0 external HHD when I plug it into the USB 3.0 port. I'm using Win 7 64-bit.  I've only recently purchased this ultrabook and today was the first time for me to plug in a USB 3.0 external HDD (which works fine when I plug it in the other port which is the USB 2.0 port).

  • Seagate Backup Plus Slim External USB 3 Hard Drive Not Working with Mac Pro

Hi, I have just purchased a brand new Mac Pro.  I have three 2 TB Seagate Backup Plus Slim External USB 3 hard drives that just don't jive with the new Mac Pro's.  When the drive is connected, I cannot access the drive, read/write or even format.  Finder completely locks up and the drive cannot even be force ejected. When I try to format, Disk Utility either spits out an error that the drive cannot be read, or simply locks up.  This happens regardless of the OS on the Mac Pro.  I am currently running 10.10.2
I have ruled out an issues with the drives, as I have tested all of them on a variety of systems and OS's, including Power Mac, Mac Book Pro, PC, OS 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 as well as on Windows.  I have tried formatting in every file system including Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Extended (Journaled), NTFS and exFAT.  ALL other systems have no issues with the drives. Apple has replaced my Mac Pro with a brand new one and the drives still behave the same way.  Furthermore, I have tested the drives on three other Mac Pro's at work and they all reject the drives. So, on their own, there is nothing wrong with the Mac Pro, or the drives. However, the configuration of them together is wreaking havoc.
I have contacted Seagate, and this was their response:
The most recent version of the Backup Plus drives use the USB Attached SCSI (UAS) standard to increase transfer rates.  It's possible that the drivers being used currently on your Mac Pro are having issues using this feature with the standard USB 3.0 drivers installed.  I would recommend contacting Apple to check for any driver updates or see if they any suggestions for issues involving drives using UAS.
I have also started a case with Apple Support (Case # 755934373) and am waiting to hear back regarding Seagate's response.  I've spent DAYS trying to troubleshoot this and am now at a complete loss.  If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears (or eyes in this case).
    Thanks!

    Hi danielsh6,
I recently bought the new Lacie Thunderbolt 2 D2 3TB and I had the same problem as you, i have a macbook pro early 2011, those support thunderbolt but many times there is a bug that doesn't let you connect any thunderbolt drives to your computer. The solution I found was installing this update:
    Thunderbolt Firmware Update v1.0
Before doing this I would recommend you updating to mountain lion (not yosemite yet as there is still some glitches and more on preview's macbook pro's).
    Hope this helped!

  • External usb sound card is not working correctly

When my computer usb sound card is working correctly. If your computer to sleep and wake up the sound card is working correctly. If you disable the sound card and connect again, it appears extraneous sound on the background music playing. Each time the sound is different. The sound is very similar to not match the sampling frequency. If the computer is rebooted, then the sound card is working properly again.
    Soundcard Infra-sonic.com model Amon.
I have not experienced problems when using the same card with Mac OS 10.5.8 with the drivers for Mac OS 10.5
Manufacturer issued driver for Snow Leopard, but the card still does not work correctly.
Also such problems, other users complain about an external USB audio card. None of the users can not find a solution to this problem.

  • [Solved] External USB 3.0 drive not seen under /dev/sd*

Ok, thought this would be easy but for some reason I cant get arch to see the physical drive. Its a new Seagate 2TB external USB 3.0 drive. I connected it to a windows laptop and it was quickly recognized (ntfs). I then installed ntfs-3g but still cant see it. I then formatted it under windows as ext4, but its still not seen. I tried this with 2 arch PC's, both the same issue. I seen a few other posts and tried a few things like making sure the mod xhci_hcd was running. I have the latest updates on each system. fdisk -l does not show the device at all! I can see and boot to other USB devices fine just not this one, maybe since its USB3.0??
I noticed here, they talk about maybe USB3 is broke in the new kernels, after 3.10.2 maybe?
    Similar issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=126299
    Possible bug: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/36296
However, I would think that by now, this would have been fixed as USB3.0 is more common? Other than trying to find a OLD 3.10.2 kernel any other advice?

Awesome, THANKS!! Yes I got it to work following this and specifically Da_Coynul's post:
I was able to get my external drive working again by telling the usb-storage module to ignore uas for the device. Here is how to do it:
First, create a file named ignore_uas.conf in the /etc/modprobe.d directory containing the following*:
    options usb-storage quirks=Vendor_ID:Product_ID:u
*(substitute your actual Vendor_ID and Product_ID obtained from the lsusb -v command).
    Next, regenerate your inital ramdisk:
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
    Finally, reboot your computer.
Although this is not a solution to broken uas, at least it will let you use your drive as before hmm

Thanks everyone...Now I can see the drive, and will work on formatting it with XFS...

While trying to download from itunes to iphone I connected iphone by USB to laptop VAIVO with windows 7 the itunes does not recognise the device.

If you have the retina display iPad then it's an iPad 3 (or 3rd gen iPad, not an iPad 2 3rd gen) - the iPad 2 was the previous model.
As far as I know sharing the wifi connection with another device or computer isn't possible. If your computer doesn't have built-in wifi then you should be able to get a USB wireless adapter for it that will plug into one of its USB ports, which should allow it to connect to your wifi network - I use one on an old desktop computer.
    e.g. from Amazon : http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=u sb+wifi+adapter&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Ausb+wifi+adapter

  • External usb drive 3.0 - not recognized

Daughter is off to college -
Replaced her 3 year old mac power book with a new one.
Upgraded to mountain lion as the new machine did not have it pre installed
Transfered old files to the new mac via firewire
Verified that the new installed mountian lion is working and all software apps files et al are on the new mac and all is working
After updating all apps from the app store decided it was time to  attached the external drive used for time machine on the old mac to the new mac
new mac does not recoginze the external drive - does not mount
turned off the new mac attached external drive and noticed that the boot never completed just the apple screen
put the external drive back on the old mac running 10.5.8 and run a verify all checked out fine -
went back to the new mac - same thing no external drive found
went back to the old mac and got the invisible sibling error
ran a few things on the old mac within disk utility and from the support forum and the error went away
reran the and utility verified and no repair needed so I assume the drive is working
back to the new mac - again no external drive found.
    the drive is a 1 TB toshiba - v6300-c
    any thoughts -

    Ok just to clarify,
I have the exact same problem as the original poster (aznalabukm)
I tried the SMB reset and the PRAM reset, but no luck on my late 2011 2.5 i7 Macbook pro.
I tried it in a co-workers late 2011 2.4 i7 Macbook pro - same thing - the device shows up as a USB 3.0 hub in system information, but does not show up in Disk Utility.
    Same Toshiba modelv6300-C 1TB Toshiba
What's wierd as I look at it, the label shows DC+5V 1A.
in System Information it shows the device needing and receiving 500mA, so I will try it on a usb powered hub and see if that helps.

  • MSI GT70 20D USB 3.0 ports not recognising USB 3 devices.

Yesterday, I received my MSI GT70 Haswell/GTX780 laptop.
I have had a shedload of headaches with it so far, not least of all due these laptops coming with Windows 8 on. Most of the issues that I had, have been resolved now that i have gotten rid of Windows 8 and put Windows 7 back on, I guess the remaining blanks will have to be filled in when Windows 7 drivers become available. One problem that persists into my laptops life with Windows 7 however, is that the USB 3.0 ports do not work, at least not with USB 3 devices.
Does anyone else with these laptops have this problem and does anyone have any ideas on how to get it fixed?

Quote from: Prohor on 25-August-13, 22:18:32
Finally I resolve this problem. After huge search on the net I found that the older firmware versions of many USB 3 storage devices have compatibility issues with the Haswell chipset USB 3 controlers. I updated the firmwares of my W.D. external drives and the laptop recognized immediately the drives and used them with USB 3 speeds. After one month with this problem I am very dissapointed with MSI support. It isn't possible that I am only one customer with this problem. This informations and solution It should be suggested from the support MSI team on our first contact. The fact that they didn't shows that the MSI support team don't knowing the compatibility issues of their machines hardware. I hope that in the next time will do their job.
    To start off, you're a bit mis-informed.
This is a users to users forum. We are not paid by MSI. We do this in our free time because we enjoy it.
Second, did you actually contact MSI support? *WE* here on the forums are not MSI support. I re-read the thread and you have not mentioned anywhere in it that you contacted the actual MSI support team.
On the rest, thanks for atleast clarifying how you resolved the problem. I did not know this, and I'll do my best to inform other users that have this problem about it as well.

  • 1 USB port charge but not recognise my iphone the othe one works fine

    Hey guys,
    I have MacBook Air 11-inch, Mid 2012
1 USB port just charges my phone but not recgnise it. I tried a flash drive and it didn't recgnise it as well
It was working well but all of a sudden it stopped working
    please help

    Try resetting the PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information. If issues persist, your Mac's logic board battery (not a portable Mac's rechargeable battery) may need to be replaced. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down. You can take your Mac to a Mac Genius or Apple Authorized Service Provider to replace the battery on the logic board.

  • HELP - External USB Hard Drive Will Not Mount

Ok, I've read through MANY other external HD mounting problems but can't find anything that helps me with my specific problem. Here goes...
I have all of my graphic/music files on the HD of my Mac. I want to copy these files to a drive so that I can clean it off and sell it. I will be transferring the files to a PC.
I purchased a USB external HD from Best Buy four months ago. I plugged it in and it asked me to reformat the drive as Macintosh. I took it back and had them reformat the drive as FAT32 so that I could use it on both systems. I had this done twice because it didn't work the first time. Well, it didn't work the second time either but they tested it on their Macs and it worked so I think it's a problem with my Mac.
The drive is recognized in both the System Profiler and the Disk Utility. When I try to mount it in the Disk Utility, nothing happens and it goes back to "Select a disk or volume".
I would like to get this problem fixed without spending any more money on it. I've contacted Mac techs and they usually charge $100/hour and can't guarantee how long it would take to fix. That, and I don't know anyone I trust with my precious data.
I'm beyond frustrated with this as I have been dealing with it for over six months now. I have tried unplugging and replugging but nothing seems to work. I've tried all USB ports (keyboard, monitor, tower) and various different power outlets (wall, power strip, etc...). The data is irrecplaceable and I'm nervous that it just sits on the computer without being backed up. If anyone has any ideas for me to try, please let me know. I am at my wits end.
Also, now it seems that Apple System Profiler "unexpectedly quits" when I try to open it. Any ideas???
    Thank you

Here is a USB faq. Hope it helps!
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk for your unepectedly quit issue.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.
Try the repair first. if no luck try things in this Unexpectedly Quit link.

  • Trying to install Mountain Lion on external USB drive. Will not boot!

Running mid-2010 MBP 15", OS X 10.8.5 (upgraded from orig. 10.6 Snow Leopard). I'm trying to create an external boot disk from scratch -- 500gb USB drive.
Working from instructions on this page:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5911
    1. Re-partitioned the hard drive with GUID partition table, 1 partition, formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    2. Downloaded the installer from the App Store. Ran the install. Installer runs without incident. So far so good...
When the installer is finished running, and the system tries to re-boot, it just hangs at the grey screen.
The drive mounts normally if I set the start disk to the original internal disk. I ran 'verify disk' from disk utilities and all appears to be okay.
Tried a different USB cable, I'm about to swap the drive into another USB enclosure to see if that's the issue.
Any suggestions on how to further troubleshoot?

Just swapped the drive out to another USB enclosure. It's booting. Who knew the enclosures could be so sensitive? Wondering if it's a power supply issue on the other enclosure?
