External usb drive 3.0 - not recognized

Daughter is off to college -
Replaced her 3 year old mac power book with a new one.
Upgraded to mountain lion as the new machine did not have it pre installed
Transfered old files to the new mac via firewire
Verified that the new installed mountian lion is working and all software apps files et al are on the new mac and all is working
After updating all apps from the app store decided it was time to  attached the external drive used for time machine on the old mac to the new mac
new mac does not recoginze the external drive - does not mount
turned off the new mac attached external drive and noticed that the boot never completed just the apple screen
put the external drive back on the old mac running 10.5.8 and run a verify all checked out fine -
went back to the new mac - same thing no external drive found
went back to the old mac and got the invisible sibling error
ran a few things on the old mac within disk utility and from the support forum and the error went away
reran the and utility verified and no repair needed so I assume the drive is working
back to the new mac - again no external drive found.
the drive is a 1 TB toshiba - v6300-c
any thoughts -

Ok just to clarify,
I have the exact same problem as the original poster (aznalabukm)
I tried the SMB reset and the PRAM reset, but no luck on my late 2011 2.5 i7 Macbook pro.
I tried it in a co-workers late 2011 2.4 i7 Macbook pro - same thing - the device shows up as a USB 3.0 hub in system information, but does not show up in Disk Utility.
Same Toshiba modelv6300-C 1TB Toshiba
What's wierd as I look at it, the label shows DC+5V 1A.
in System Information it shows the device needing and receiving 500mA, so I will try it on a usb powered hub and see if that helps.

  • External hard drive clicking and not recognized by mac will DiskWarrior work?

First of all apologizes if I've posted in the wrong community I couldn't find one that really fit my particular query.
I'll give a quick rundown of what happened and see if anyone can help or suggest a course of action. My Seagate External HDD model SRD0SP0 was mounted to my 2013 MacBook Air when it started to make a loud noise freezing the computer and requiring me to force shutdown the entire system. I immediately rebooted the computer and it started up again fine but when I tried plugging in the drive to the USB it would only spin and beep at regular intervals and then go quite. The drive did not mount to the desktop but I could see it in DiskUtility although the 'verify' and 'repair' options were greyed out. I tried to connect to a PC but it would not recognize the drive either. I left the drive alone for a few months and now when I plug it in it starts to fire up with the whirl sound but that is quickly followed by 5 faint ticks followed by a louder click. It almost sounds like something is dragging and the click is it coming to an end before starting up again. (I have a .m4a recording of the this but I don't see an option to upload) This goes on for about 20 seconds and then a window pops up saying something along the lines of 'this disk is not recognized by this computer' and the options to 'initialize' 'ignore' or 'eject'. I have only ever clicked eject. As before the drive is visible in DiskUtility but the options are greyed out.
I contacted a data recovery agency and their response was:
I would recommend to remove bare drive from the External casing and connect it to a computer directly or via another USB enclosure. If the drive is internally fine you should be able to see and copy the files. If you still get the same symptoms then your clicking hard drive most likely has internal problem with read/write heads and needs head assembly swapped from a donor. It's a very serious problem and recovery procedure in this case requires a lot of experience, use of class 100 clean room and specialized equipment.
If stored files are not particularly important you should replace the hard drive. If you need data from the drive we could recover it for $950 USD.
At this time I am not comfortable taking my drive apart and I can not afford close to 1k in repair costs. From my research on this forum I have seem multiple suggestions to try DiskWarrior but I am not sure that it will work with the problems that I am describing. Before I spend the money has anyone had a similar problem and had success recovering their data via DiskWarrior? Or do I have to resort to the data recovery agency or the freezer technique?

If the drive is making clicking sounds then it will probably fail. That's evidence of a mechanical issue. DW isn''t going to fix that nor will Disk Utility. Only replacing it with a new drive will fix it. While you can you should make a backup.

  • My external hard drive is suddenly not recognized.

I have a thunderbolt enabled 1.5 Terabyte Seagate FreeAgent Go Drive. It was used as a simply external hard drive and then I added it to be used as a time machine location. After the first initial backup, it suddenly became no longer recognizeable. It does not apear in the finder, disk utility, or in the terminal when I ask for list of the Volumes. The drive light is on, I can hear the disk spinning, and it warms up as normal after being plugged in to the computer for a period of time. Still, I am unable to recognize the drive in any way.
Ideally, I would like to save the files if possible. If not possible, I'm happy to reformat the disk but this is not possible at this time with the drive being unrecognized by any means I am aware of.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am using 2.3 GHZ i7 Retina MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM. I'm on 10.9.1.

Yes, exactly. It's very strange. I've never had this happen. Drives fail but then don't apear in the DiskUtility app. This drive is "there" but I cannot seem to preform any action on it. This is the type of response received (in Log) I get whenever I attempt any action:

  • WD Smartware, external hard drive back up not recognized by Macbook Pro

I use WD external hard drive as back up for my Macbook Pro using WD Smartware. All software is upto date but when I plug in my external hard drive it is now not recognised by my Mac. It does not appear in Finder or Disk Utility but it does show up in System Profiler. It has worked fine until now. I have changed the UCB cables multiple times, the external WD hard drive has its own power suppy and other external hard drives work in the same usb port. When I plug the external drive into a PC it is recognised but obviously will not let me use it. When I go to access via the PC it prompts me for the password to open the drive, however when I plug into my Mac, when I click on 'unlock drive' its says that the drive is not locked. The WD Smartware software runs to check the files on my Mac but after categorising them the 'back up' option is not highlighted and it will not access the external WD drive.
How can I access the WD external drive ? System Profiler data is below. Many thanks, apologies for any ignorance and thanks in anticipation of any help !

  • Trying to install Mountain Lion on external USB drive. Will not boot!

Running mid-2010 MBP 15", OS X 10.8.5 (upgraded from orig. 10.6 Snow Leopard). I'm trying to create an external boot disk from scratch -- 500gb USB drive.
Working from instructions on this page:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5911
    1. Re-partitioned the hard drive with GUID partition table, 1 partition, formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    2. Downloaded the installer from the App Store. Ran the install. Installer runs without incident. So far so good...
When the installer is finished running, and the system tries to re-boot, it just hangs at the grey screen.
The drive mounts normally if I set the start disk to the original internal disk. I ran 'verify disk' from disk utilities and all appears to be okay.
Tried a different USB cable, I'm about to swap the drive into another USB enclosure to see if that's the issue.
Any suggestions on how to further troubleshoot?

Just swapped the drive out to another USB enclosure. It's booting. Who knew the enclosures could be so sensitive? Wondering if it's a power supply issue on the other enclosure?

  • External Hard Drive and Computer NOT recognizing IPod

Can anyone please help me? I purchased an external hard drive to store all my songs instead of on my internal hard drive. I change the location of all my songs to the external hard drive and even import any new song there as well. But when I connect my IPod to my computer to update and import my new songs, my computer DOES NOT recognize the IPod. The only way my computer will recognize my IPod is if I disconnect my external drive first and then connect my IPod. But then I cannot import or update my IPod. This is driving me nuts. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
    IPod 20G   Windows XP

Anyone find a solution for this yet??? I'm having a similar problem. I have an external drive but my tunes are on a partitioned drive on the internal. The external is off but when I go to enable disk use it keeps turning it off on me. When I have selected manually sync songs then it tells me that disk cannot be read from or written to. The computer never shows a drive for the ipod. This is really getting on my nerves!

  • My external USB drive is not recognized by Win XP

    Hi!
I have an external USB drive that is HTF+ formatted. It is not recognized by Windows XP. If I start the windows disk manager it gives me the option to initialize the drive. Do I dare to do this? Will it not erase the information on the drive?
    Thanks for any help!

Hi Anders and welcome to Discussions,
I have an external USB drive that is HTF+ formatted. It is not recognized by Windows XP. If I start the windows disk manager it gives me the option to initialize the drive. Do I dare to do this? Will it not erase the information on the drive?
    Yes it will !!
Although with the BootCamp 3.0 Drivers (from the OSX Snow Leopard DVD) and the 3.1 Driver update (downloadable) Apple has introduced read-access to HFS+ partitions from Windows this feature seems to have some serious problems for some people.
Personally I see this feature as "experimental" at the moment.
XP itself knows nothing and therefor can not use/see HFS+ partitions and GPT (GUID partition table) harddisks.
You might wanna have a look (or buy) at MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/ which right now is the better solution.
    Thanks for any help!

    Hope it helps

  • How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility

How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility?
Last night i was using my external hard drive, for some reason the folder just closed and i couldn't find it on my desktop.
After googling solutions, i found it in the disk utilities, i clicked on the 'repair' button many times, but it said the 'error...' message.
So i ejected it to try again, now when i connect the USB external hard drive it doesn't show up on my desktop or disk utilities.
I really just want to either repair or recover the data on it because it literally has everything (documents, work files, photos etc) on it,
I downloaded an application to recover my files but it needs the USB to at least show up.recognise it which mine doesn't.
I know i should've backed it up on another USB, this definitely teaches me for next time to back up all my files.
Are the files lost forever or can i recover them by going to a shop or using a software?

    Thank you for responding.
This might sound stupid since i'm not really knowledgeable with Macs,
but since all my files were moved from my mac computer to the external hard drive,
is it possible to recover those files through my Mac - like recovering deleted files?

  • EXTERNAL USB Drive will not open with Snow Leopard

External USB drive will open with SL. The drive icon appears on the desktop. When I click on it, Error message, "The alias USB Drive can't be opened because the original item can't be found." When I click on "Fix Alias", a window pops up and shows the usb drive in a list but does not respond when I click on it. I then tried disk utility and tested the disk and it tested OK. The drive still will not open. This problem started after I installed Snow Leopard. Need Help.

The same error is produced when I try to mount a smb share.
I select the "connect to server" (cmd-K). Input the share info "smb://<user>@<server>/<share_path>
At the auth prompt, I input my credentials.
The error pops up, same as original poster.

  • CD partition of 320GB External USB Drive - PX1267U-3G32 does not run

I have an 320GB external usb drive, which has been working perfectly.
There is a security partition that appears as a CD drive in My Computer and runs the password programme automatically when the drive is plugged in.
Having entered the password the external hard drive appears as a drive in My Computer.
This security programme has stopped running.
I have turned the drive on/off.
Tried it on a different machine.
Tried to 'Autoplay' the CD drive.
Double Clicked the CD drive only to be told to "insert a disk into drive F:"
Is there a way to bypass this partition and recover all my data from the hard drive?

    Hello
Several times I saw how it works because a friend of mine has this external HDD. I do not have much experience with it but before you wait here for comments try to install REGEN software again. Maybe it will help. This software and CD Update Application you can find and download from Toshiba support page http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com
Check it under Options > Drive Devices.

  • External USB drives will not mount under Mountain Lion

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, two external USB2 drives that I have will not mount and cannot be viewed in the Finder.  The same occurs on a 2012 MacBook Air, a 2009 iMac 27 and a 2010 MacMini, all running OS X Mountain Lion version 10.8.2.
Both drives are Samsung Story external USB drives (one is 1.5 GB and the other is 2 GB) and both have been formatted using Mac Disk Utility with a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition, one using Snow Leopard and the other with Lion.
Both still mount correctly on a friends MacBook Pro that is still running Snow Leopard, and I had no problem with the same drives under Lion.  Interestingly both can also be connected to Time Capsule USB port and show up correctly.
Both drives mount correctly under Windows 7 on BootCamp partitions that I have on both the 2012 MacBook Air, a 2009 iMac 27. These BootCamp partitions have Paragon HFS+ installed so I can read Mac formated drives.
Both drives show up in Disk Utility, but when attempt to mount the drives I get the message "The disk could not be mounted.  Try running First Aid on the disk and retry mounting." I can run Repair in First Aid on the disk and get the message that the volume appears OK, but again have the same problem when I attempt to mount the disk.
I have also tried using Disk Utility 3,2, but still cannot mount the drives, though the program indicates there is no problem with the drives.
I have other portable USB including a Samsung portable USB2 drive, and two external USB3 drives, and I don't have problems with them.
There is clearly a problem with Mountain Lion with accessing (mounting) these Samsung Story USB drives, and the problem appears to be with Mountain Lion itself as the problem did not occur on the same Macs with Lion and does not occur with Bootcamp partitions on the machines.
I have a lot of time searching forums, but I have not found anyone with an identical problem.
I sure hope someone can help or that Apple come up with a fix for this issue which has only developed since the update to Mountain Lion.

  • Iomega external USB drive not working

Hello, I have a K8n neo4f board, 1.9 bios, AMD64x2 4400. For some strange reason my external USB drive doesn't work with this setup. I get i/o or insufficient resource errors, and the system will hang. This is puzzling since I have plenty of system resources available (2G ram), and my USB inputs work with other devices. I currently have a dvd drive, ir receiver, memory card adapter, and a cordless mouse receiver plugged in. All of these devices work flawlessly. There is nothing wrong with the external drive, it works with my Dell Inspiron 8200 Laptop. Is this a bios issue, should I upgrade to the latest 1b ? I'm hesitant of doing so, because of the horror stories I've read in this forum of systems becoming unuseable. Maybe someone with a similar problem can help me out.

Are you sure this is not software related .

  • Disk Utility Not Formatting External USB Drive

    Hello,
I recently upgraded to Leopard.  Around this same time, my company purchased two, 1 Terabyte USB External drives for my coworker and I in the graphics/web development department.  They arrived this morning and we were very excited.
My problem is that I cannot get Disk Utility to erase/format the new, external USB TB drive for use with my MBP.  Disk Utility fails almost immediately with the following message:
    "*Disk Erase Failed*
Disk Erase failed with the error:
    File system formatter failed."
The options I'm choosing for the Erase are:
Volume Format: MAC OS EXTENDED  (i've even tried the 'journaled' version too)
    Name: TB
As soon as I hit 'Erase' I get the error message I listed above.  The volume never mounts on my desktop and does not exist.  I can see the drive itself in the System Profiler, so my Mac sees it, it just can't format it!  I've also made sure all my permissions were repaired, so I'm just a little confused as to why this simple task keeps failing?
Is there some additional, esoteric step that I'm missing?
My coworker was able to get his disk to work because he did NOT have Time Machine turned on yet.  When he connected his new TB drive, Time Machine asked him to format/initialize the disk and he of course said "ok."  I had Time Machine set to use my OLD external USB drive and it's been working great. As of this writing, my coworker is a happy camper. I, however, am not.  I'm not blaming Time Machine, just noting the differences between my coworker's experience and my own. Since the volume is not currently mounted on my machine, I can't format my disk the same way as my coworker has done using Time Machine, since Time Machine doesn't see the volume.
My fear is that the manufacturer (whom I've also contacted and am awaiting their response) will throw this back to a software problem....and the folks on the forum here will point their fingers and say 'hardware problem.'  Ah, the eternal struggle.....who to blame?
Any help or additional troubleshooting tips are greatly appreciated.

This is the best, and only, way to format an external hard drive, which is courtesy of Kappy.
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

After upgraded to the latest OS X Lion, external USB drives plugged to my macbook pro (named A) won't show anything. I've tried cmd+opt+r+p twice but no luck; however, i am able to see it in Disk Ultilities and Storage in About This Mac...
Another same macbook pro of mine (named B) did the upgrade and it is working just fine - external drive is shown as normal whenever plugged.
Help please because my daily work depends largely on document on external usb drive!!!???

I've surfed around already before having my problem posted here because it's so frustrated…
AnaMusic: I've tried that but it isn't worked
    Eric Ross: it's checked
LexSchellings: I did run "verify disk" and "repair disk" -> but no luck… My hard drive isn't mounted to Lion as shown in status. Is it something to do with NTFS format? I came across some forum and read that Lion is design to natively support NTFS..
    Are there any ways around???
