External USB ejects and locks up iMac

I have a 27" Core i5 iMAC.  Brand new machine that runs great.  I am trying to transfer over my data from my PC to my new iMAC.  The PC data is on several external UISB drives that are formatted NTFS.  I have downloaded and installed the trial version of Paragon NTFS for Mac.  When I connect the external drives, the iMAC sees them and their disk images show on the desktop.  But then the drive spontaneously ejects, or the system locks up (requiring a hard reboot), or both.
Any ideas?  Any logs to capture?  I am very now to the Mac world and aren't exactly sure where to start troubleshooting this issue.
Thanks,
Neal

Check the power supply and cables to the Dock and try a different USB port on the back of the iMac.
Also note: that you should not need third party NTFS software to read the Hard Drives, it is however required if you plan the write to them.

Personally if I found that the Dock wasn't playing well with the iMac, I might pick up a decent USB or FireWire External Hard Drive and while it is formatted "MS-DOS/FAT-32" transfer my data from the PC to the iMac and then reformat it "GUID Partition Table/Mac OS Extended" to use as a permanent backup drive for the iMac.

    Drive Partition and Format
1.Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Can I use an external usb super drive on my iMac 10.6.8 ?

The answer is no unless you are willing to modify a system file.  See this article.  Read the entire thing and the comments before deciding if it is the route for you.
If it were me I'd go with Shootist's advice and get another brand--for the reasons he stated.
I have a SuperDrive that I use with my 2012 MBA but with my late-2012 27" iMac, which does not have an internal CD/DVD drive and therefore will work with the SuperDrive, I use a 3rd party that is both faster and cheaper than the SuperDrive.

  • Move PC iTunes library to external hard drive and consolidate with iMac

Hi, I have a PC that I'm not using much. I have a ton of iTunes music files on it so I went through the process of copying these files to my networked external hard drive. I have my iMac connected wirelessly to this same hard drive. I went into the System Preferences on the iMac to tell it where it could find the new library and I pointed it to the iTunes folder but there is not an iTunes Media folder like many of the articles state, like this one: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
Do I need to create an iTunes Media folder? Note this is an iTunes Library that was on a PC, moved to a networked external hard drive and will be used on my new iMac.
    Thanks.

  • Can Leoprrd install on a external USB HD and boot from it.

    hi, first post here.
I have serveral external usb hd. I wanted to know if i attach one to my aging G4 1 ghz 512 mb mac.
Put in Leopard Install disc in my dvd drive, will Leopard install on the external and boot from it.
this way I could somehow dual booy 10.4 or 10.5... Is this even possible.
Ps I also have a extrnal firewire drive but would perfer to install and boot from the USB port instead.
I know tiger didn't let me do this....but perhap Leopard will.

a Drive Partitioned in GUID will NOT boot to a PPC (G4,G5) machine. you need to Partition the drive using APM. APM will boot on both PPC and intel machines.
A GUID 10.5 startup will be reconized by the system startup prefrerence. but if you try to restart the computer using that startup, it will give you the missing OS icon and then revert back to the system drive.
Also I've noticed that you must be installing from a PPC systme to be able to install on an APM drive. If your on an intel drive, it will force to repartition to GUID before letting you install.
And since PPC doesn't support GUID, you can't install GUID while booted to a PPC.

  • 10.5.8, External USB Modem, and Receiving Faxes

    Hello,
I bought a Zoom external usb modem today, and am attempting to set up my computer to receive faxes on it. I followed the instructions that came with the unit and was able to send faxes. But when a call comes in, the computer doesn't pick up the call. I have the software set to answer on the 2nd ring, but it goes through all 4 rings before the answering machine picks it up.
Do you have any suggestions on how to get this to work? I'm working on the latest Mac Pro tower, running 10.5.8.
When I was setting up this machine, I used the option to copy over all the files from my old G4 tower. That tower was running 10.2, had an internal modem, and I was working with FaxSTF. Is it possible an old file associated with that program is causing a conflict with the new software (in that the OS seems to have the ability to answer a call)? FaxSTF won't even detect the external modem on the new tower.

    Hi megamom,
with an OS after 10.5.5 much people have problems with sending or receiving faxes automatically.
This solution is a "workaround" and will not affect in any problems, like I saw that they will happen after:
1.) Removing and changing "IOSerialFamily.kext" : ("The system extension '/System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext' was installed improperly and cannot be used....")
2.) or go back to OS 10.5.5... (latest security-updates not included)
Go to your System-Prefs -> Printing and Faxing
    chose the Fax-Modem -> Options
1.) to receive faxes: choose "receive faxes on this computer"
2.) to send faxes: choose not to "receive faxes on this computer",
plug your modem out, wait 5 seconds and plug it in.
Now you can send faxes, but not receive,
before you choose "receive faxes on this computer" again.
To send, you have to start with 2.) again...
It's strange for a mac, but better than 10.5.5 or a corrupted system...
APPLE-STUFF: HERE AGAIN: FIX THAT FAX-PROBLEM FOR 10.5.8 QUICK PLEASE - IT'S IMPORTANT!!!

  • External USB drives and ZFS?

I have a plan to add a couple of USB drives to my Solaris 10 x86 box and then put them into a zfs pool for some extra storage.
    Is this feasible?
Having had no experience using external USB devices I don't know how they present themselves to Solaris and if using them with zfs is possible.

I have recently been using a usb interface to a sandisk card. Everything seems to work pretty well. No idea about zfs though, havnt taken that leap yet.
For removable media you can just plug it in (I use the ports on my type7 keyboard) and type rmformat to see if it is recognized by the system. Mounting can be funky depending on the format. However this command seems to work for your average pc formated card.
    find the address using rmformat
    then
    # mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c8t0d0s2:c /home/someuser/somefolder
Here is an example of the rmformat output on my system.
You can see a firewire drive and a usb SD card device.

  • Buzzing and locked up imac

Our imac started buzzing and locked up. The only way to shut it down was to unplug it.  After restarting, it seems to be ok. Any thoughts?

Sounds like maybe your disk drive is going bad. Try running AHT on the install DVD for you Mac to check it out.

  • Satellite A105: External USB HDD and IPod connection issues

    Hello,
I got laptop toshiba satellite A105, last weekend I reinstalled windows on my laptop using recovery disks and now I got two problems.
First problem when I connect my external hard drive, my computer don't show any icon of this hard drive but when I check in disk management external hard drive is connected to my computer.
Second problem is my IPod, similar problem to the hard drive don't shows when is connected to my laptop but when I checked in device manager under usb controller is showing but with yellow circle and question mark.
Could you help me to solve my problem?
    Kings regards

    Hi
Did you try to refresh the USB port drivers??
    You should try this;
    - Disconnect all USB devices from the USB ports.
    - Access the device manager and remove all USB Root Hub and all USB Host controllers.
    - Reboot the notebook
After this procedure the Windows OS should recognize and should install the USB ports again. After new reboot you should connect the single USB devices and should check if they will run correctly!

  • Unable to empty trash due to external USB HDD's locked files and no permission?

    Hello.
I was doing a major cleanup with an external Seagate USB HDD due to low free disk spaces. It has two partitions/drives: FAT32 (using it for on other non-Apple machines like Windows 2000 SP4) and HFS [Time Machine only]). I threw about 30,000 items (copied from an old Windows 2000 SP4 machine's HDD with NTFS back a few years ago) from FAT32 partition/drive into the trash can. However, I am having problems emptying it. Most of them were emptied, but some were left behind.
This four years old MacBook Pro's Mac OS X 10.5.8's Trash dialog boxes said "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." and "Emptying the Trash cannot be completed because "<filename>" is locked. To empty everything in the Trash, including locked items, press the Options key while selecting Empty Trash". http://i.imgur.com/XFBfF.gif for the screen shots/captures of the error messages.
I tried holding Option key and emptying trash, but that didn't help/work. I used Finder to look at the files, and they had locked status. So I unlocked them which worked, but I can't delete the empty folders/directories, and these don't have locked.
What's going on and how do I empty the trash? Thank you in advance.

I used the administrator (sudo) account in Mac OS X 10.5.8's Terminal to delete the trash, but it still failed:

I tried deleting this on an old, updated Windows XP Pro. SP3 machine and it had no problems! Weird. I wonder why Mac OS X 10.5.8 failed to delete it through its Finder and Terminal (sudo rm -rf command).

  • G580 external USB 2 and 3 hub connection

    G580 Windows 8 64bit
I am unable to connect either USB2 or USB3 external hubs either powered or not to the notebook. The USB2 is locked out by windows and the USB3 crashes the system until removed. Intel driver update states that all Intel drivers are up to date. Both tested hubs work on an HP Vista 32bit laptop. Individual USB devices work fully so it seems to be hubs that are the problem.  As there are only two USB3 ports available it would be convenient to use a hub occasionally. Any help would be gratefully received

I have a drive I had been using in a 2007 MacBook that I would like to "upgrade" to a compatible version of 10.7.4 (build 11E2705), but I am having trouble finding a way to get the version of the OS on the drive without affecting the data on the drive.
I had hoped that booting from the Recovery partion on the SSD would allow me to "Reinstall 10.7" to get a compatible version, but the drive still can not boot the 2012 MacBook Air.
I may try cloning next, moving directories I want to keep to the root level of the target drive, but I wish there was an easier way to "refresh" the install of the OS to a newer version for new hardware.
I also need to find a way to "refresh" the USB drive I have for installing 10.7, to make sure it has the ability to boot new hardware, since the original 10.7.4 USB install clone does not boot the newest laptops.

  • External USB Ejecting When Sleeping

    Hi,
I have noticed recently that when I wake my MBP up from sleep I see that my USB drive has been ejected. I am unsure why this is. The drive is partitioned into 2 volumes and one of them is my Time Machine drive. I have seen a few posts that this might be the reason, but I cannot find a solution.
I have tried SleepWatcher to try and unmount, and then remount the drive when it sleeps and wakes back up but keep running into issues with it; couldn't get the scripts to run, permission issues, but that is besides the point.
Anyway has anyone else run into this, and found a solution?
    Thanks
    Patrick

    Hi,
Thanks, I should have mentioned that. It is powered by an AC unit and is connected through a USB hub that is also AC powered.
    USB Drive: LaCie 1 TB
USB Hub: Belkin 7 port (5 on back, 2 on top)
I am going to try a few things and see if I can isolate whether the hub is the issue or not. It will take some time because I cannot put the machine to sleep and wake it right back-up to cause the error. I will connect the drive directly and let the machine sleep for a few hours and see if the issue happens again.
    Thanks,
    Patrick

  • External USB drive goes to sleep, iPhoto complains when it try's to access it and exits

I moved my iPhoto to an external USB Harddrive and everything at first worked fine.  Now I get these errors sometimes "Your iPhoto Library is missing".  iPhoto will exit and when you start it again everything is fine.  What I think is happening is the external USB drive has gone to sleep due to inactivity.  Is there a setting in OS X that I can control this with ?  I ugly hack would be to set up a cron job to do a ls of the root external USB drive every 15min.  Is there a special feature that you should look for when buying an external USB drive ?  It is very iratating to get these messages from iPhoto and iTunes.
    Thanks
