External USB enclosure for DVD Multi IV drive?

I replaced the DVD Multi IV drive (FRU 45N7451) that came with my T430s with a SATA Hard Drive Bay 9.5 mm Adapter III (FRU 43N3412) to hold a 2nd HD.
Now what to do with the DVD drive? The physical interface isn't the standard SATA connector that's used on HDs. Is there an external enclosure available for this drive from Lenovo? I don't need a DVD drive very often but for when I do it would be a lot more convenient to plug it into a USB port than to swap UltraBay devices.
Would this work? 13pin Slim SATA to USB External Portable Case for Laptop CD-ROM DVD DVD-RW Drive

To answer my own question, yes. I ordered this item and it arrived this morning. I now have a USB-connected external DVD drive that works with both my T430s and X61s, as well as other PCs. The flexibility that this gives me, e.g. to put another HD in the T430s, is well worth the small cost of the case. A single USB connection is sufficient to power the DVD drive so there's no additional cables or AC power supplies to worry about either.
The Lenovo DVD drive went into the case smoothly with the following minor issues:
1. There is a small black plastic spacer screwed into the back of the DVD drive which I presume is used to keep the drive firmly in position when mounted inside the T430s. I had to remove that piece in order for the drive to fit in the case. I'll have to remember to reattach it if I ever want to put the DVD drive back into the T430s.
2. The new thinner DVD drives now being installed on s-line ThinkPads leave a small gap between the top of the drive and the top section of the case. I stuck some foam spacers using double-sided tape on the inside of the top section of the case in order to keep the drive in position.

  • External USB CD-RW/DVD-RW drive for eMac?

Hi, I'm running OS 10.3.9 on an early model (2002) eMac. The computers' built-in CD-RW drive (HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8240B) is completely shot; it won't read anything. I'm considering getting an external USB CD-RW/DVD-RW drive; anyone know what make and model would be best for what I have?
    Thanks,
    James

Do yourself a favor and avoid a USB drive- your eMac is USB 1 and the speed is impossible slow. Get a Firewire drive instead. You'll pay a little more, but it's worth it.
BTW, did you try to clean the head on the drive? On of thos Cleaner CDs from Wal-Mart (or your favorite store) often time can fix a drive that won't read anything.

  • My internal hard drive no longer boots.  Boots just fine in external usb enclosure.

My internal hard drive no longer boots when inside my laptop.  The drive boots just fine in external usb enclosure.  It is also fully recognized when internal (as seen in single user mode, recovery mode or while booting from another drive).
    I have tried:
    with disk utilities
    •fixing permissions
    •repairing disk
    in single user mode
    •fsck -fy
    zapping the pram
removing ram and zapping the pram
Any suggestions or diagnostics would be appreciated.

Can't believe I spent days reformating my hard drive, restoring it, getting another hard drive... and it was all a cable that failed.  I wonder what can make an internal cable like that fail (seems like the least likely part of all to fail).

  • Need help finding correct external hard drive enclosure for a T61 hard drive

Hi, recently my lenovo T61's video card fizzled out right after the warranty expired. I have information on the laptop's hard drive that i need to get off of it. I have a hard drive enclosure for my old hp laptop's hard drive but the two drive have different connectors. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction to find a lenovo T61 hard drive compatible external hard drive enclosure.
The hard drive is a 100 GB 7200 RPM drive
    Model: HTS722010K9SA00
    HDD: 7K200-100
    LENOVO P/N: 42T1056

what model is your HP laptop? also how old is it?
Prior to SATA connector there is the PATA connector.

  • External USB Connected Samsung DVD: Beeping/flashing of OS/applications

I connected this drive (which is an internal model mounted in a NextStar USB 2 enclosure) to the USB port directly on the back of the mini (I have a Belkin powered USB base, and I'm thinking maybe I should try it in that). In any case, a blank DVD was detected, but after a few minutes (while noodling around with iDVD), I noticed folder titles were flickering, the top menus would not "stay" dropped down (I'd have to hold the mouse on them as I mad selections), and I was hearing a repetitive beep/chirp from the system. Unplugging the DVD drive resolved it. The drive works on Windows machines without issue. Is there a power limitation on the mini USB ports, or another issue of some kind?
    Many thanks,
    Mark

    Hi Ron,
As you found out USB can play odd tricks on you when
    you least expect it.
I would say, you concluded that power was the issue,
once a powered hub was used? That is usually the
case, however length of cables can also affect that.
Yes, that's my conclusion, though it would seem inconsistent with what I would believe to be true: That the on-board USB ports are powered and should be able to support the load (especially considering that the external device itself has it's own power supply). Still, no denying that it works fine when connected to the separate Belkin powered hub. I suppose this is one of those "odd tricks".
In the case of my USB enclosure I have no problems
using the included 1 meter cable (Aprox. ~3 feet),
however using a 2 or 3 meter cable, that is a
different story. I need the hub if I use them.
The cable in use with this external drive is about 3 feet long.
A friend seems to have issues with routing his USB
cables. He is OK if he allows them to sag behind his
monitor. If he routes it to close to the rear end of
the monitor he crashes his Mac big time.
I guess we could make a case for interference (power line or otherwise) in that scenario, but, yes, it too sounds a bit odd. I don't feel so bad now.
Thanks for your response. It's much appreciated.

  • Compatible USB enclosure for hard disk from a 15-inch Aluminum Powerbook

My old Powerbook finally bit the dust, so I dismantled it and removed the hard disk. I want to get an enclosure to use it as a USB drive, but do not know what size or type of enclosure to purchase.
I tried to guess, and ended up buying:
Connectland CL-ENC25005 2.5-Inch Light Weight USB 2.0 Interface SATA HDD External Enclosure
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0028Y4D9U/ref=oxya_ohproduct
When I got it, the connector in the enclosure was too small for the number of pins on the hard drive. Can somebody recommend an appropriate USB enclosure to use with an old Powerbook hard disk?

Hi, jakshale, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Your Serial ATA (SATA) enclosure isn't what you need, as you've guessed; your drive is a Parallel ATA (PATA, also called IDE) unit and needs an enclosure designed for that interface. Any enclosure intended for 2.5" ATA/IDE/PATA notebook drives will work. Here's one that's almost as dirt cheap as the one you bought:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817106093
Note that if you intend to use the newly-repackaged drive with a Powerbook, a USB-only enclosure isn't a good choice unless you get one that can use its own AC adapter. This is because most Powerbooks don't supply enough power through their USB ports to power an external drive. The same Powerbooks do supply sufficient power through their FireWire ports, so an enclosure that can be connected via FireWire is a better choice. If you're going to use the drive with a desktop Mac or an Intel MacBook instead of a Powerbook, a USB enclosure should be fine.

  • External USB 2.0 DVD-RW Burner

Is it safe to assume that any external USB 2.0 burner will work with my Mac Mini even though mfr specs don't list OS X as a compatible OS?
I understand that the bundled burning SW (eg, Nero) will not work with OS X, but I assume the external drive would work OK with Toast 7. Correct?

I have an LG 5163D and I contacted LG before purchasing it to make certain it would work with a Mac. It has both Firewire 400 and USB 2.0 ports and, at first, I used it with Firewire, thinking it would be faster and more reliable than USB 2.0. But I needed my Firewire port for my external hard drives and I switched to USB 2.0 without any problems. I think the most important factor when burning DVDs (or CDs) is the media you use. I use TDK and the drive burns perfectly every time at 16x for data (slower speeds for audio or video disks).
Find a drive you like and contact the manufacturer to see if the drive is compatible with Mac OS X. If the manufacturer says it isn't, I'd avoid it even if it's listed as a compatible drive on a list on the Internet because you won't get any support or help from the manufacturer. I've contacted LG a few times and they've been great with their responses.
Also, you might want to use PatchBurn to ensure that the drive works flawlessly.

  • Enclosure for retired Maxtor hard drive?

I just upgraded the hard drive in my eMac, and now have a 40GB Maxtor 4D040H2 drive serving as a paperweight on my desk. When I did a similar upgrade to my PowerBook a few months ago, I was able to purchase a cool external enclosure that allows me to keep using the old drive as a portable backup. But I can't seem to find a similar enclosure for this drive -- do they exist? What keywords should I be using to search for one? The model number doesn't seem to be enough.
    G4 Powerbook | G4 iBook | G4 eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The last one I bought was this one...
    http://tinyurl.com/ncgbg
$32 shipped and has both Firewire and USB2 ports. I used it to format a 160GB drive and clone my internal over to this drive making it bootable. I then swapped drives, putting the new 160GB into my eMac and the removed Maxtor 80GB drive into that enclosure. It now serves as a nice backup drive.

  • External USB 2.0 DVD writer - sleep mode issue

I have an Adaptec USB PCI card and hook up with an external USB DVD writer. When I try to standby (sleep mode) it, only screen blanks out, PowerMac G4 does not go to sleep, and no way to wake up or access to it. Only way is a hard shutdown.
The question is, do I need to disconnect this DVD writer first and do I need eject this USB 2.0 device first?
    Thanks

    Hi
Most Mac compatible USB 2.0 PCI cards seem to have problems supporting sleep. Typically either the computer won't sleep, or it will sleep but hang on wakeup, or it will sleep and wake up but the device will no longer be recognised until a restart. One solution seems to be to switch off any connected USB devices before sleeping the computer.

  • Will my imac superdrive work ok if i put it in an external usb enclosure?

    Hi!
I have an optibay caddy to put in my iMac 27" so I can add a second SSD to my system... Question... Will OSX still recognise the superdrive and use it as normal if i put it in a slot loading external USB caddy?
Thanks for any advice in advance.
    Mike

It may. It could. It should in theory. But none of us can guarantee it will. You will just need to give it a try. I would get a caddy that is guaranteed by its developer to work with a Mac.
    Update -
Looking on the Optibay site, I see that they include a caddy for your Superdrive, with the Optibay, to do exactly this solution. So that should definitely work for you. They have developed it to do so.

  • External USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt enclosure for Seagate 6 TB drive?

Any body found a USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt enclosure that works with the Seagate 6 TB ST6000NM0024 drive? Apparently the mounting screws are in a different place to accommodate extra platters.

The screws that changed or moved are the "bottom entry" screws directly adjacent to the platters. This makes mounting on a Mac Pro silver tower drive sled difficult, but many other kinds of drive mounts use the "side mount" screws, which should not be affected.
WD solution for this was to leave the bottom mount screws in the same place, but shorten the allowable screw penetration. For sled mounting, this means either shortening two of the existing screws, replacing the existing screws with shorter ones, or adding a washer under the screw heads.

  • Can a 10.6.8 drive boot from an external usb enclosure on a 2013 mac mini running natively on 10.8.3?

I primarily use a 2011 MBP running 10.6.8 as my primary work computer. My wife also has a MBP that runs on 10.7.X. I'm able to take the drive out of my MBP, put it in an external enclosure and boot it from my wife's MBP. However, on the Mac Mini I just bought yesterday (10.8.3), it does not boot. It just hangs on the white/grey Apple logo screen.
Is 10.6.8 no longer compatible to boot on a machine that is 2 years newer? Does anyone have any experience with this issue? Thanks in advance.

So in order to make this work, I'd have to:
    1. upgrade my 2011 MPB to Mountain Lion? Is that even possible? It looks like Apple is doing a free OS X upgrade to Mavericks and 10.6.8 is included: http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/
However, this worries me a bit because of software compatibility. Not sure what it's going to do to all my software.
    2. Buy an older pre-mountain lion Mac Mini.
    3. Virtual machine. I'm not a fan of using Virtual machines. It eats up too much RAM.

  • USB enclosure for X41 optical drive

I'm wondering if I'm chasing a product that doesn't even exist.  I just want to find out whether there's anything on the market that would allow me to use the optical drive from my X41's base, via USB, with my X201.  I've had bad experiences with consumer USB optical drives, so if I can't track one down, I'm going to find one of those Dell hotswap optical drives with the mini-usb on the back and use that. (Lenovo/IBM, why on earth didn't you do that with your drives too?)

    Hi KnightZero,
Since X41's dock also uses UltraBay slim, so this would work. I suggest you to do a serach on eBay or elsewhere for the UltraBay slim to USB adapter, maybe you can find a better.
    Hope this helps.
