External USB HD doesn't show up on the desktop
I have an iMac G5 with 10.4.10 installed on it
Last week after the update to 10.4.10 my LaCie usb conected hard drive still showed up on my desktop but after a second restart it disapeared and never came back.
If I connect my external HD with a windows computer (with macdrive software) I can see and open my files. (I concluded that my drive still works propperly)
If I connect my drive nothing shows up on my desktop but, there is a change in my /volumes map (I have an map action connected to an automator script if some thing changes overthere). When I connect my HD I can see an automator action is going on ...
And if I put the power of from my usb drive I get an warning that a drive was unmounted "unpropperly" (the warning when you plug a usb out without draging it to the trash).
I have al ready tried :
*Putting my mac on and of again, didn't work
*Putting my HD on and of agian, didn't work
*Opened disk utility and checked my external drive, disk utility can see my external drive but it showed no errors when checking.
*checked my Finder preferences, removeble media should show up on my desktop
*Opening usb prober; overthere I can see that my external HD is connected, but my HD would show up magicly on the desktop like some other lucky people on the internet.
*Rebuilding my directory with diskwarrior, didn't work (diskwarrior did saw my drive and said it did show up on my desktop
*Restoring IOUSB...keys from the combo 10.4.9 updater, didn't work
*Reinstaling 10.4.0, my drive didn't show up either, updated everything back to 10.4.10, won't show up.
Does anyone have an idea what I can do to get my drive up and runing again on my iMac?

Hello, I'm having the exact same problem as Cheburashka, actually it started happening almost as the same time (jul 23). I just switched from being a PC user to a Mac user, so I don't know much about OSX yet. Cheburashka mentioned he made an update, I also made a sofware update, maybe it has something to do? Also my desktop stopped showing my external usb HD
and any other USB flash memory I plug into any usb hubs. but when I tried them on a pc, they worked perfectly, so I also discarded a possible error on my usb device, I tried my usb joystick and the keyboard on my G5's usb hubs and they work perfectly so is not a hardware problem either. I'm about to try that invisible-hd fix right now but I'm a little worried cause I've never used it, seems like a big deal, anyway I'll keep up with any progress you guys make, thanx.

When I plug in my Lacie (thunderbolt) External Drive it doesn't show up on the desktop. I need to move some stuff out of my hard drive to make room. I have very little room left on the hard drive and need to move an iPhoto library.
i have a lacie, and i encrypted it. i had to wipe it, because it kept dropping off over and over and re-logging in. so unencrypted i went.
at some point it wasn't recognized at all. sometimes disk utility would open it, but then it got to the point that it wouldn't recognize it either.
i hadn't realized that the power supply was dysfunctional. but i was able to recover it using disk warrior at the last deep breath it took. the disk itself still works, but not in that housing. -
My external hard drive doesn't show up on my desktop screen
I have a 1TB external drive that connects by USB. I use it as a Time Machine and for other storage. It worked fine until a few weeks ago. Now, when I connect it, the drive starts spinning, but it doesn't show up on the desktop screen or in Disk Utility.
Other USB drives and devices work fine when plugged into either of my USB ports. Also, this particular 1TB drive works fine with my older MacBook. It's just that this particular external drive and this particular MacBook Pro don't seem to be working together.
Thoughts?Does it show up in disk utility
remove and reconnect the USB connector on the drive end., check Finder > prefences > general ....is hard disks checked?
Have you used this HD on that Mac before?
Does this HD show in another machine/ Mac?

I bought a 250Go external hard disk at the same time as my alumnium iMac around september 2007. Since then I had no problems.
I also created partitions on my hard disk:
1 - Mac = Mac OS extended (Journaled) 202 Go
2 - PC = MS-DOS (Fat) 30 Go
When I turn on on my hard disk, both icons usually appear on my desktop but since yesterday, ONLY my PC icon appear.
I went in the Disk Utility and it seems that the MAC partition is always here but won't show up on the desktop. It's like it's become invisible or something.
Should I be worried? Because I use the MAC partition to back up all my files with Time Machine.

The (missing) HD is Boot Camp Partitioned and running Fusion. BTW, Fusion/WinXP will no longer open - "File not Found" error. Also, I didn't immediately notice the disappearance because my MacBook started booting from one of ext HD's (w/o me changing the startup drive).
Any ideas greatly appreciated. I haven't tried the Terminal solutions posted since I'm not Terminal savey. -
What can I do when my USB and External Hard-Drive don't show up on the desktop?

I've followed some threats telling to "verify" and "repair" on the Disk Utility, and the first time I went through it, it said that it couldn't be repaired but before I could do anything else, my USB disappeared from the list on the left of the window. I tried again but this time and every other time I try, it disappears straight after I verify it. What's going on? What can I do? Please Help?

Hi, is there a way to "force-mount" an external drive that doesn't show up on the desktop? I have a new Hitachi SATA III 2 TB Ultrastar that won't show up like all the other drives when plugged in. So I can't partition, repair, format etc with Disk Utility, Disk Drill, Tech Tools etc. How do I make it visible?
I use the FW 400 to 800 adapter and a FW hub.

Have a macbook pro running osx lion. Connected a Kindle Fire using micro usb and the disk icon doesn't show up on the desktop. Also sometimes get a message sayiing computer doesn't recognize device. When I opened disk utilities the Kindle disk does show up there. What am I missing?

My WD Passport for mac won't recognise its own password or show up on the desktop
I have a Macbook Pro and have been using the Passport for 3 months without a problem. The cable was pulled out without ejecting the Passport the correct way. Now it doesn't show up on the desktop and a colourless window pops up and asks for the password. Im 100% sure the password is correct. The window thinks about it for about 20sec then shakes to not accept it.
I have tried to repair the Passport and that has not worked. Does anyone have another solutations to access the HD?
The passport still works, the light comes on and still spins.

Yes the WD Passport for Mac has its own password to access the drive. It is an option that i stupidly activated once it was installed. Previously as i plugged the Passport in it would pop up on my desktop and ask for the password. Which it would accept and then i could access the data. Now nothing comes up on my desktop but still asks for the password but does not accept it. The colour of the window for the password has also changed. It now looks like the "security and privacy" icon that you can find in your systems preferences.
It seems as if it has forgotten its own password or there is some other security or problem blocking me.
I obviously wasn't aware that this product had so many problems. I have not installed the Mavericks program to this computer yet as it takes time and im on the road without and solid internet connections.
I will persist with searching forums and trying to recover the data

[SOLVED] External USB mouse doesn't work
I've installed Arch on my laptop and today faced with a problem. When I boot with AC off my external USB mouse doesn't work. Also it looks like USB ports don't work. If I detached AC when working mouse works fine.
I can suppose there is some problem with laptop mode. May be it turns off usb ports to save energy. Anyway quick search doesn't brings any results. If someone give me a hint how to solve this problem I'll be very grateful.

Hi skydiver, I have ios7.4, I tried two different USB ports and it still doesn't show,up on my desktop in my computer as iPad so I can't click it. If it was there I would open and see all my photos, and YES it ask me DO I trust this computer! several times.

My external hard drive doesn't show up in finder.Time machine can't find it. Does this mean my external hard drive is dead?
I borrowed a friends and switched mine with hers. My acted the same way in her macbook. I switched the cords on the external drives, no change.
Also, Is there a way to retrieve the information from my sick external hard drive? Thanks for your help.If the Disk Utility sees it, you might be able to repair it or recover the data on it with a product such as DiskWarrior or Data Rescue.

External USB Hard Drive not showing up on Time Capsule

I have a 500 Gb Time Capsule that used to be able to detect my external USB hard drives. I had to store my things for a while and have just started using the Time Capsule again. The TC works fine, however, the same USB external hard drives I used to connect to the TC are not showing up anymore :s They show up on the desktop when I connect them directly to my MacBook via USB. I have been through most of the file sharing options in Airport Utility and System Preferences but have not been able to solve this. I can't think of any settings that would have changed from when they were showing up in the past. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thxyosemite won't work with ntfs drives for some reason, i've had the same issue with my toshiba. i thought ok lemme buy another one, and transfer it over maybe it's a driver issue which i've tried over and over, apple support can't figure it out.
here's a simple fix, but the problem is i have an external where all my photography and video files are stored, so i can't access them right now and it's making my life ****.

that does work and make the drive mountable now, but problem being i can't obviously reformat the old drive and lose everything. once the new drive is formatted for mac i can't plug it into a pc to transfer the files from. which is the only problem now. but formatting the drive for mac only DOES work. but you're just screwed and not able to use it ntfs. hope the link helps SOME people. -

i'm having an issue with my external hard drive. this morning i went to plug it in since that's where i store all of my music, and for some odd reason it didn't work. i have a feeling it's because the night before i unplugged it without ejecting it. my mistake, i know, but now the drive is all messed up. earlier i was able to view the volumes on it in disk utility, and before deciding to erased anything i plugged it into my sister's dell where i transfered everything on the drive. now, when i plug it in my macbook it only shows up in disk utility without the volumes, it doesn't show up on the dell anymore, and when i go to erase everything it tells me "operation timed out".
i'm at a loss of what to do. i tried restarting the macbook, unplugged the cables... nothing seems to work. i would really like to get the thing back to factory settings if that's possible. so if anyone can offer help, it would be most appreciated. the external drive is a 500GB Maxtor OneTouchTry this:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
If you plan to use this drive on both your Mac and a PC, then format the drive MS-DOS rather than Mac OS Extended. -
External USB HDs Sort Of Showing Up In Finder
I have two external USB hard drives, one from Seagate, the other (newer one) from Maxtor. Under Mac OS X 10.4, I had no trouble with these drives. They showed up on the Desktop and on the Finder.
Under 10.5 (10.5.1 specifically, though this existed on 10.5.0 too) I only see the new Maxtor drive on my Desktop and in the Finder sidebar. The Seagate drive is still accessible, but I have to navigate to my computer's root, then go to the Volumes folder and open it.
All the appropriate boxes are checked in the Finder's preferences. Again, one of the drives does show up.
Interestingly, and likely related, the drive that does show up is formatted as Mac OS X (extended journalling) and the one that does not show up in Finder (the one I have to access only through /Volumes) is FAT32 formatted.
I would try and reformat the FAT32 to see if this solves the problem but I don't have space to move the entire external hard drive over somewhere else while I reformat it.
I saw that this issue has come up on the forum before. Were any solutions found?
I'll update this post when 10.5.2 comes out if it fixes my issue.Do they appear in Disk Utility? If not, try all USB ports and test them on another Mac. They may be faulty.

Since updating my Mac to 10.8.4 any external hard disk doesn't show on Finder sidebar (but shows on desktop). Anyone else have the same problem?
It's annoying because now I can't use Finder sidebar for drag and drop to thumb drive etc.

It is set to show on the sidebar in Finder prefs and I tried toggling the setting multiple times but it didn't fix anything.
I went into Preferences (I'm Administrator) but the strange thing is I don't see com.apple.sidebarlists.plist anywhere in the folder. Not sure what that means..
