External USB HD no longer mounts

Hi - I've been using a Seagate Free Agent Desk 1TB external USB drive on my Intel iMac for a little over a year without any significant problems. Sometimes, in the past, it might come unmounted for some reason, maybe a power surge or something but would always remount without problem if shut down, etc.. About a week ago I tried to access a recent file on the external drive and nothing was there. I did a restart and got a message to the effect that "Drive not recognized, Ignore, Eject, Initialize", you know the one. I ignored. Since this time I have been unable to get the drive to mount. Nothing has been changed in the computer, no updates, or changes. The computer is kept on at all times and everything else continued to function as normal.
I have tried everything that I can think of and anything I have seen recommended i.e.: Restart, Shut Down, reset PRAM, reset SMC, USB Prober, verify & repair permissions, delete DiskUtility.plist, delete caches, etc.. About the only thing I've come across and haven't tried is to load older versions of the "drivers" using Pacifist. There didn't seem to be any really reason for that since it had been functioning fine with the current version. The disc "shows up" in System Profiler and Disc Utility but, if you try to Mount it...nothing. When an attempt is made to Verify or Repair in Disc Utility, the following messages are received: "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit." and "1 Non HFS volume checked. 1 Volume could not be repaired because of an error.". I downloaded Boomerang to see if the demo version could tell me anything but it too recognizes the disc but, when it scans it, seems to hang up at 0%.
This drive is mostly used for back ups so I don't really want to have to invest in data recovery / expensive recovery programs. My impression, since the drive seems to "be there", is that the "Header File" (or some such) has just gotten corrupted and, if it could be reset, everything would be OK. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a way to do that. If anyone has any other ideas, I would love to hear them before I have to resort to reformatting. As I said, it's mostly just back ups but I know I'm going to loose something important that I've forgotten about so I hate to just wipe it all.
Thanks in advance,
Kevin King

Have you tried another cable and have you attempted to connect it to another computer? If neither solution works then yes the drive has probably failed. I'd recommend possibly investing in a higher quality drive something like a:
OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro series
or
Lacie Quadra D2 series
or
G-Tech G series
all are high quality products with similar features and build quality. Personally I use Lacie however I wouldn't hesitate with either of the others.

I found this thread but my problem is different from the op's.
I run the linux-ck package from the AUR but as a sanity check, installed the ARCH kernel package and this problem exists under both:

I know this thread is marked solved, but I have the exact same problem - I just installed the linux-ck package from the AUR (running linux-ck version 3.2.11-1), alongwith the nvidia-ck package. The kernel was compiled with the localmodcfg and BFQ options enabled in the pkgbuild. Now when I plug in an external drive, dmesg detects it, but no device nodes are created under /dev.
There is nothing wrong with the drives (happens with multiple drives) - and they are mounting fine under the stock kernel. lsusb also shows the drive present. I thought this might be an issue with needing to rebuild initramfs using mkinitcpio, but the available hooks seem to include all the usual ones from the stock kernel, nor does the wiki article mention needing to do such a thing. Any ideas?
EDIT: I didn't notice in the OP that the problem persisted with both the -ck kernel and the stock kernel. In my case, it only persists with the -ck kernel - and this happens on two different computers.

Is the drive's icon on the desktop (perhaps behind another icon, which is possible if Finder > View > Cleanup is enabled)?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > General > External Disks checked?
Is the drive listed in every Finder window's sidebar?
If not, is the box Finder > Preferences > Sidebar > External Disks checked?
Are Time Machine backups to the drive happening on schedule?
If not, does the drive appear in System Preferences > Time Machine > Select Disk?
Can you open /Volumes/Mac-Mini 2/Backups.backupdb using Finder > Go > Go to Folder...?
Does the drive appear in Disk Utility? Is it (or can it be) mounted there?
Have you tried to plug it in to a USB port on the Mini (not a hub) or into a different USB port on the Mini?
Have you tried this: shut down; unplug the drive; boot the Mac; after you have logged in and the Finder is done populating the desktop and menu bar, plug the drive in?

  • External USB harddrive no longer recognized/accepted

    Hi,
Since updating to Mac OS X 10.5.9 my Mac doesn't recognize/accept one of my external USB harddrives--both are Western Digital ones, which I'm using successfully for more than one year now--, and upgrading to Snow Leopard didn't resolve this issue (see console output at the end).
Changing USB ports--hub, directly on my Mac--is to no avail either.

    Hi,
Well, at least momentarily this issue seems to be resolved, although I quite can't grasp all of it.
I've unplugged the external drive in question, both from the USB hub, as well as from the power jack, waited now for two days, until just a couple of minutes reconnecting everything again, starting with the power supply, and after some seconds the USB followed.
Et voilá the drive is being recognized and mounted again.
Weird, really weird, as I haven't got the slightes clue whatever, when this will arise the next time!

  • External USB drives will not mount under Mountain Lion

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, two external USB2 drives that I have will not mount and cannot be viewed in the Finder.  The same occurs on a 2012 MacBook Air, a 2009 iMac 27 and a 2010 MacMini, all running OS X Mountain Lion version 10.8.2.
Both drives are Samsung Story external USB drives (one is 1.5 GB and the other is 2 GB) and both have been formatted using Mac Disk Utility with a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition, one using Snow Leopard and the other with Lion.
Both still mount correctly on a friends MacBook Pro that is still running Snow Leopard, and I had no problem with the same drives under Lion.  Interestingly both can also be connected to Time Capsule USB port and show up correctly.
Both drives mount correctly under Windows 7 on BootCamp partitions that I have on both the 2012 MacBook Air, a 2009 iMac 27. These BootCamp partitions have Paragon HFS+ installed so I can read Mac formated drives.
Both drives show up in Disk Utility, but when attempt to mount the drives I get the message "The disk could not be mounted.  Try running First Aid on the disk and retry mounting." I can run Repair in First Aid on the disk and get the message that the volume appears OK, but again have the same problem when I attempt to mount the disk.
I have also tried using Disk Utility 3,2, but still cannot mount the drives, though the program indicates there is no problem with the drives.
I have other portable USB including a Samsung portable USB2 drive, and two external USB3 drives, and I don't have problems with them.
There is clearly a problem with Mountain Lion with accessing (mounting) these Samsung Story USB drives, and the problem appears to be with Mountain Lion itself as the problem did not occur on the same Macs with Lion and does not occur with Bootcamp partitions on the machines.
I have a lot of time searching forums, but I have not found anyone with an identical problem.
I sure hope someone can help or that Apple come up with a fix for this issue which has only developed since the update to Mountain Lion.

  • External USB drive won't mount without running Repair Disk

I have a Seagate external USB hard drive.  It's a 1TB FreeAgent drive  that's USB powered.  I use this to share data across several computers.  Every time I connect the drive to my MacBook Pro, it does not mount.  If I try to mount it, I'm told to "try running first aid".
So, I run repair disk, and then it will mount.  I just did this, and Repair Disk reported "The volume /dev/disk1s1 appears to be OK".
Any help on this matter would be appreciated.  It is formated NTFS, and I have an NTFS driver installed, if that makes any difference.
    Thank you!

  • My external usb mouse no longer works on my dv7-3085dx.

My HP Pavilion dv7-3085dx, running Windows 7 64-bit, is having issues recognizing the external usb mouse.  Normally the mouse will work a few seconds to minutes before the computer makes the sound that the usb has been unplugged (even thouugh it has not)  I have tested the mouse on all the usb ports and on several other computers to make sure it wasn't an issue with the mouse cord.  Furthermore, I have tried using several different usb mice with the same results.  I have also tried using other usb devices on my laptop (e.g. usb storage devices and cooling fan) with no issues to their performance and no usb device disconnect sound.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as using only the touchpad makes gaming more of a challenge than I'm ready for.

    Hi,
As per the issue you have mentioned it seems like the HID compliant mouse had been disabled .
Try to open device manager (Click on start type in device manager in Search programs and files  click on device manager ) and that will open new window device manager go to Mice and other pointing devices click on the small arrow next to Mice and other pointing devices  check to see if there is a down arrow on HID-compliant mouse if found right click on it and click on enable which will enable the Usb mouse
If you find the above steps help you resolve the issue please click on kudos.

  • 160 GB external USB HDD won't mount in 10.4.9; does in 10.4.0

I'm using a Beige G3 (though I don't think the model is the issue).
I know there's nothing wrong with the drive whatsoever, because it mounts on PCs, and it mounts when booted from both other hard drives on the system, on Mac OS 9.2.2 and Mac OS 10.4.0.
I know it used to mount on 10.4.9, too. I thought maybe when I installed a 4-port USB 2 card things would resolve, but they haven't.... so I expect it's a driver (extension) issue.
I deleted a bunch of extensions a while back that I was sure I didn't need... I suppose it's possible I deleted one vital for USB HDD support on the HDD using 10.4.9, only I don't know which it would be... things were self-explanatory in the days of OS 9, not so much with OS X, it would seem.
I didn't notice it until fairly recently since I'd been networking to the external HDD via another computer as the built-in 10BT was sadly faster than the USB 1.1 card I had installed prior.
Anyway.... since I assume this is an extensions problem (it says when I turn on the drive that a certain extension is missing, but I can't remember which), can anyone tell me what particular extension it is that enables USB Hard Drives?
By the way, USB flash drives mount and run at USB 2 speeds just fine. Thanks.

It's an adaptec card, but that's actually not the issue; it stopped working on the old USB card where it'd worked just fine before, whilst still working when I booted into 10.4.0.
Once upon a time it was working fine on both 10.4.9 and 10.4.0.
It now says "AppleXsanFilter.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used" when I start up the drive. It knows it's there, it just can't access it. It then says "device was improperly removed" when I shut off the HDD.

  • External USB HD won't mount anymore

I have a 1 TB HD that has all my media on it and today it's not connecting. In the past there have been connection issues such as:
when I brought my computer and external to a friend's house it wouldn't mount at first, and after restarting a few times and trying different USB ports it finally did mount. This problem persisted everytime I restarted my mac (iMac G5), and I realized that the problem was independent of which USB drive I used. Anyway, the HD would usually mount after a few minutes. It was mounted last night before I went to sleep. I woke up this morning and entered the password to come back from my screen saver and it wasn't on my desktop. I can't get it to mount and it isn't being recognized in the disk utility or system profiler. I've tried restarting mac numerous times, disconnecting/reconnecting the USB chord, restarting the external, but it still won't connect. Has anyone else had a similar problem or know how to help me!?

Have you tried using a different cable? Are you sure the power brick is working? Try disconnecting all other peripherals and then connecting the external.

  • Firewire external hard drives no longer mount

I had 2 firewire external hard drives connected, not always at the same time and not running all the time. Suddenly they won't mount. I have run System Profiler and it shows "No information Found". The drives themselves mount on my other Mac laptop.
An external DVD writer, when mounted, shows up in profiler though not on the desktop. I have set the finder preferences to -show all mounted drives. System profiler lists all my USB devices. It's just the 2 Firewire hard drives that show no information found. The DVD writer works in either Firewire port. The hard drives are each made by a different manufacturer.
I have re-started with everything off. I have hot swapped.
Help-I need these drives to store photo files and print publications.

The next step is to see if it is directory related and Repair Disk:
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior

  • USB disks no longer mount, unknown filesystem

Ran a routine weekly update on an arch box this morning, didn't think anything of it as usual. Until Thunar started spitting errors at me whenever I tried to mount a USB device. gvfs makes the devices appear in the left pane for one-click mounting... usually.
A partition on the hard drive attached has started telling me I don't have permissions to mount it any more - never had issues before, I'm in storage so I don't see why.
The other issue comes with a USB hard drive, and when trying to mount it as above, Thunar throws this at me:

Searching both pacman and AUR gave me no packages to do with vfat filesystems, and the wiki article "USB Storage Devices" provided no solutions at all.
Using XFCE4 DE on 32-bit Arch. All packages have been updated to latest versions as of the time of this post.

  • External drives no longer mounting on other Mac since Leopard Install

I have recently upgraded my old iMac to a Mac Mini with Leopard, however since using my Iomega 320GB External Hard Disk and also my 2GB Kingston USB Stick on my Mini they no longer mount on my old iMac, it's like Leopard has somehow created a volume on them ensuring they won't mount elsewhere anymore.
I still have lots of files on my old iMac that I need to transfer over to my Mini so this is a problem to me.
    Any ideas?

  • Firewire 800 external drive no longer mounting

My firewire 800 external hard drive is no longer mounting on my MBP. It powers up, spins, but has no reaction to being plugged into my computer. I've tried connecting it and the turning it on, and connecting it while it was already turned on. I've tried different cables and different types of adapter cables (fw800 to 400, fw800 to USB, etc.), but there is no communication between my drive and my Mac. Same goes if I connect it to my wife's Macbook, or my iMac at work.
I recently had the logic board and left i/o board replaced on my MBP, I'm not sure if this is relevant since the drive has worked since the replacements and I get the same results on other Macs.
    What should I do next?

who makes the drive set up?
OWC for example has a history of bad power supplies that make the drive not accessible (drive spins up but never spins all the way up)
