External USB HDs Sort Of Showing Up In Finder

I have two external USB hard drives, one from Seagate, the other (newer one) from Maxtor. Under Mac OS X 10.4, I had no trouble with these drives. They showed up on the Desktop and on the Finder.
Under 10.5 (10.5.1 specifically, though this existed on 10.5.0 too) I only see the new Maxtor drive on my Desktop and in the Finder sidebar. The Seagate drive is still accessible, but I have to navigate to my computer's root, then go to the Volumes folder and open it.
All the appropriate boxes are checked in the Finder's preferences. Again, one of the drives does show up.
Interestingly, and likely related, the drive that does show up is formatted as Mac OS X (extended journalling) and the one that does not show up in Finder (the one I have to access only through /Volumes) is FAT32 formatted.
I would try and reformat the FAT32 to see if this solves the problem but I don't have space to move the entire external hard drive over somewhere else while I reformat it.
I saw that this issue has come up on the forum before. Were any solutions found?
I'll update this post when 10.5.2 comes out if it fixes my issue.

Do they appear in Disk Utility?  If not, try all USB ports and test them on another Mac.  They may be faulty.
Ciao.

  • External Hard Drive does not show up in Finder

My external hard drive is not showing up in Finder.
It shows up in Disc Utility, but I do not have access to it. I have tried the following:
    command-shift c, nothing happens
confirmed in Preferences/General that external hard drive was checked
    tried another cable
tried another port on the back of the external drive
tried to connect through the USB port
    re-started, etc.

That means the directory is corrupt. If you have a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app, such as +Disk Warrior,+ it may be able to fix it. Otherwise, your only option is to erase and reformat the disk. They're not cheap -- Disk Warrior is about $100. And for Leopard, you need version 4.1.1 or 4.2.

  • My external hard drive doesn't show up in finder, is it dead?

My external hard drive doesn't show up in finder.Time machine can't find it. Does this mean my external hard drive is dead?
I borrowed a friends and switched mine with hers. My acted the same way in her macbook. I switched the cords on the external drives, no change.
Also, Is there a way to retrieve the information from my sick external hard drive? Thanks for your help.

If the Disk Utility sees it, you might be able to repair it or recover the data on it with a product such as DiskWarrior or Data Rescue.
If the Disk Utility doesn't see it, contact professional support.

  • External USB Hard Drive not showing up on Time Capsule

    Hi all,
I have a 500 Gb Time Capsule that used to be able to detect my external USB hard drives. I had to store my things for a while and have just started using the Time Capsule again. The TC works fine, however, the same USB external hard drives I used to connect to the TC are not showing up anymore :s They show up on the desktop when I connect them directly to my MacBook via USB. I have been through most of the file sharing options in Airport Utility and System Preferences but have not been able to solve this. I can't think of any settings that would have changed from when they were showing up in the past. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx

yosemite won't work with ntfs drives for some reason, i've had the same issue with my toshiba. i thought ok lemme buy another one, and transfer it over maybe it's a driver issue which i've tried over and over, apple support can't figure it out.
here's a simple fix, but the problem is i have an external where all my photography and video files are stored, so i can't access them right now and it's making my life ****.
    http://guides.macrumors.com/Formatting_an_External_Device
that does work and make the drive mountable now, but problem being i can't obviously reformat the old drive and lose everything. once the new drive is formatted for mac i can't plug it into a pc to transfer the files from. which is the only problem now. but formatting the drive for mac only DOES work. but you're just screwed and not able to use it ntfs. hope the link helps SOME people.

  • External USB HD doesn't show up on the desktop

I have an iMac G5 with 10.4.10 installed on it
Last week after the update to 10.4.10 my LaCie usb conected hard drive still showed up on my desktop but after a second restart it disapeared and never came back.
If I connect my external HD with a windows computer (with macdrive software) I can see and open my files. (I concluded that my drive still works propperly)
If I connect my drive nothing shows up on my desktop but, there is a change in my /volumes map (I have an map action connected to an automator script if some thing changes overthere). When I connect my HD I can see an automator action is going on ...
And if I put the power of from my usb drive I get an warning that a drive was unmounted "unpropperly" (the warning when you plug a usb out without draging it to the trash).
I have al ready tried :
*Putting my mac on and of again, didn't work
*Putting my HD on and of agian, didn't work
*Opened disk utility and checked my external drive, disk utility can see my external drive but it showed no errors when checking.
*checked my Finder preferences, removeble media should show up on my desktop
*Opening usb prober; overthere I can see that my external HD is connected, but my HD would show up magicly on the desktop like some other lucky people on the internet.
*Rebuilding my directory with diskwarrior, didn't work (diskwarrior did saw my drive and said it did show up on my desktop
*Restoring IOUSB...keys from the combo 10.4.9 updater, didn't work
*Reinstaling 10.4.0, my drive didn't show up either, updated everything back to 10.4.10, won't show up.
Does anyone have an idea what I can do to get my drive up and runing again on my iMac?
BTW; English is not my native language, I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Hello, I'm having the exact same problem as Cheburashka, actually it started happening almost as the same time (jul 23). I just switched from being a PC user to a Mac user, so I don't know much about OSX yet. Cheburashka mentioned he made an update, I also made a sofware update, maybe it has something to do? Also my desktop stopped showing my external usb HD
and any other USB flash memory I plug into any usb hubs. but when I tried them on a pc, they worked perfectly, so I also discarded a possible error on my usb device, I tried my usb joystick and the keyboard on my G5's usb hubs and they work perfectly so is not a hardware problem either. I'm about to try that invisible-hd fix right now but I'm a little worried cause I've never used it, seems like a big deal, anyway I'll keep up with any progress you guys make, thanx.

  • HELP! External hard drive won't show up in finder!

Last night, I was updating my macbook (from August 2008, still runs on leopard) and it needed to restart. I forgot to eject my LaCie Porsche 1tb external hard drive first and, when it rebooted, I got the error of death (aka "disk was not ejected..."). When connected to the USB port, the drive lights up, I can hear it spinning, but it won't show up in finder and I can't see it in Disk Utility to repair it (after the first error of death, the computer wouldn't even acknowledge that I had the drive plugged in). I've tried plugging it into the different USB ports and even on a different macbook, but no luck in getting the computer to recognize it long enough to use Disk Utility or DiskWarrior. Any tips on how I can get my macbook to read the drive again?

If the external hard drive is not showing up in Disk Utility when connected to two or more different computers, then the problem is with the hard drive, it is broken. Get a new one.

  • External hard drive doesn't show up in finder or migration assistant

    Hello all,
I'm new to this forum and pardon me if this question isn't posted in the right category.
I recently broke my old macbook pro to the point it was inoperable.  I extracted the hard drive which appeared to be in good shape, put it in an external enclosure & plugged it into my new macbook pro via usb and it's not showing up in finder, disc utility or migration assistant.  I'd like to import my old music, pictures & documents if possible. I'm curious why it isn't showing up and how I can make migration assistant work?
Hope everyone had a good Christmas and a happy new year!
    Thanks,
    Andrew

  • What do i do when external optical drive doesn't show up in finder?  how can i import software, music, etc. when the drive isn't recognized/mounted/whatever?

the internal optical drive on my early 2006 20"imac has mechanical problems ejecting discs.  i've gone thru all the recommended steps to eject discs, and have luckily been able to eject the last 3 discs but only after spending 30-60 minutes going thru all of the steps over and over, and today just trying "eject disc" in itunes since i had itunes open.  i don't want to put another disc in - the drive clearly has problems with the mechanical eject mechanism, and from what i've read that's not unique to my computer.
i bought an external optical drive: lite on, clamshell design to avoid problems with the eject mechanism; i contacted the mfr who said it's mac compatible.
the drive plays dvds, which is all i've tried so far, but doesn't show up in finder.  so i don't know how to use it to load software, or music, or anything besides watch dvds.
is there something i can do to get the drive recognized/mounted/whatever?  i would prefer to not spend the $220 which was quoted to me by an authorized mac repair company, even tho i think that's probably a reasonable cost given the delicacy of the operation as shown on ifixit.com.
    thanks!

I have an external LaCie burner and it will not show up on my Mac unless I insert a CD or DVD - in that case, the media will show up (I have these settings in the Pref Pane):
If you want to burn files or music to blank media, you can use Finder or Disk Utility for files, but should use an iTunes playlist/iTunes for music and a movie burn app for videos/movies (such as iDVD, Roxio Toast, Burn, etc).
If you simply want to drag files over as a backup, an external hard drive is a much better solution than a burner.

  • External Hard Drive does not show up in Finder in Tiger

I've attached a Western Digital Mybook to my Time Capsule.
I can access it through Finder on my MacBook. I can access it through My Network Places on the two windows PCs we have (they run XP Professional). I cannot, however, access it on my iBook G4 running Tiger (OS X 10.4.11). I can connect to the TC, but the external hard drive doesn't show up.
This is bad, because I want to use the external as a shared drive for iTunes, etc. Has anyone else had this problem? More importantly, does anyone know of any fixes?

  • Why no boot support for external USB HDs?

I found this after laying out cash on a Lacie 160gb Porsche drive - i Carbon Copy Cloned my startup disk onto the external, go to start-up disk in Sys Preferences, and choose the shiny new drive. It doesn't boot.
So I search and find this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106474
    My questions:
    1. Why is USB booting not supported by OSX?
    2. Is there any workaround?
    thanks in advance,
    Mike Power

thanks foir the replies, everyone. Even though firewire is faster, i thought at least apple would keep abreast of latest technology and create USB drivers that can handle prevalent technology.
I don't intend running my mac from the external HD permanently, only in emergencies when I have a hard drive failure on the laptop, so I couldd clone the OS across using drive genius or Carbon Copy and save hours of installation, and downloading updates to software.
Does anybody know anything about using the "burn image from" and "restore" commands on Disk Utility? Is there a disk image size limit? <derails own thread into tangent>
that way, I could simply burn an image of my laptop to the USB drive, and if all else failed restore it from the OSX install disk using Disk Utility.
All this because Apple have failed to supply working drivers... feels more like windows every day!
thankss to anyone who can answer this or earlier questions.

In my experience the best free software for that sort of thing is TestDisk. I don't know if it's been tested yet on Windows 8. So run it on a Windows 7 computer.

  • External HD suddenly won't show up in finder

I have an Iomega external HD that I've had connected to my iMac for several years now. All of a sudden, it has disappeared from the finder. System Report shows it is connected, but neither rebooting the computer, the HD nor both has caused it to reappear. It contains my iTunes library and iTunes can't find it either. I connected it to my wife's iMac, also running mountain lion, with the same results. I've connected it via firewire and USB. My Focusrite audio/midi interface is connected to my iMac via this HD and shows up, but doesn't work.
I've tried disk utility. It shows, but under the name of the HD, the name I gave it, "music", is grayed out and the Mount Point is "not mounted". Verify Disk says it is okay. Trying to mount it returns the message:
The disk “Music ” could not be mounted.
Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting.
Running First Aid again doesn't change anything. Any ideas? If the disk is dead, can I get my data from it to another disk?

  • Brand new iMacs & an external USB drive disappeared on one of them - help?

I'm new to this particular forum & I just bought a 2.8 GHz intel iMac (my wife is picking up for me this moment) - my boss just bought a 3.06 GHz intel iMac a few days ago, he installed Parallels & then Vista Ultimate w/SP1. He has an external USB hard drive & it showed up mounted on the desktop. When Vista asked him (voices from the dark side) if he wanted to link the drive to Vista he said yes - that's when the drive disappeared & he said that he couldn't get it back & he said that he couldn't find it with the explorer in Vista either. He tried rebooting, tried reconnecting the drive, doing this w/o launching Vista, etc - but he said that it wouldn't come back. He is not experienced with Macs, only the dark side so he's not familar with the system yet. I have not seen his Mac yet. I'm at work, so I do not have access to a Mac, I cannot offer troubleshooting tips for this cold turkey w/o a Mac in front of me, as it has been over 5 years since I've seen a problem like this.
That is why I'm writing this here, because I know that this is no doubt a simple fix for most of you. I can try to get him to come to this discussions site.
I can't wait to fly my new Mac today - should I just go ahead and re-format (low-level) & install from scratch? Even though I've purchased Parallels also, which needs no partition, should I make a partition anyway, incase i want to also use the Boot Camp route on the other partition?
    Thanks 1.0E6,
    Gino

Success - He finally did get it back after shutting everything down, powering down, pulling its connection, bring the mac back up sans Parallels/Vista, connect up the drive, drive showed back up, then startup Parallels/Vista.
btw - my new iMac is a dream (2.8/500/24") - I changed the memory to 4 mb, low level formatted the Mac, installed the software & "wow-zer" compared to my older lapstand iMac
btw2 - I had posted before to other forums (Airport, Mail), but this was the 1st time to this particular forum (intel iMac)

  • External Hard drive wont show up in Finder

    Hi,
After Mountain Update, the external hard drive icon wont show up in Finder sidebar, Desktop and in Disk Utility.
Is there anything which needs to be set in System Preference ??
I have the External Hard Disk checkbox checked in Finder Preference, inspite of this I cannot see the Hard drive icon
    Please help.

You can try looking in Finder Prefereneces.
Go to the Finder Menu > Prefeences
Look at the sidebar pane.  Make sure the Devices box is checked.
Go back to your finder window and make sure that Devices are not hidden.  To the right of the Devices work there is a dimly visible show/hide command that is visible only when you have your cursor next to the Devices word.
You can also try unpluggin the drive and unplugging its USB cord then plugging it all back in to try again.

  • External USB drive not recognized in OS X after rebooting from Boot Camp

Thanks in advance for any help. Here's the situation:
Everything works fine in OS X (10.5.2). In particular I have an external USB harddrive that I keep my iTunes songs on.
Then I boot via Boot Camp into Windows XP and play a few games. Then I reboot out of XP and back into OS X. At that point the external USB harddrive does not show up on the desktop. If I turn off the harddrive and turn it back on again, it shows up and is usable. I can continue to do that, but I would appreciate any advice on how to get the harddrive to show up when rebooting from XP (without requiring it to be turned off and on).
    Thanks!

I've surfed around already before having my problem posted here because it's so frustrated…
AnaMusic: I've tried that but it isn't worked
    Eric Ross: it's checked
LexSchellings: I did run "verify disk" and "repair disk" -> but no luck… My hard drive isn't mounted to Lion as shown in status. Is it something to do with NTFS format? I came across some forum and read that Lion is design to natively support NTFS..
    Are there any ways around???
