External USB Hub?

I recently purchased a Sonnet Allegro USB 2.0 expansion card for my PowerMac 1.8GHz DP. Like others, I too am experiencing the dreaded deep sleep problem. I was wondering if anyone has had better success with an external USB hub. If so, which brand/model are you using?
Thanks,
Kelly

Hi-
You will have better luck (no sleep issues) using a USB hub. The only draw back is if you have multiple devices sending/receiving data at the same time, the transfer will slow down. One at a time, or static connection, no problem.
Here is a source of several quality hubs:

  • Satellite M300: speach recognition works only with external usb hub

    Hi All
I have the Satellite M300 which I was able to operate the speach recognition program prior to having the motherboard replaced due to the usb's failing.
I have found using the headset I cannot achieve high enough quality to operate it.
The only way I can operate the speach program is use an external usb hub with its own power supply.
Would the problem relate to the audio card or just simply not enough voltage?
    And is there na fix?
    Cheers

    Hi
The notebooks USB ports provide a standard power of 500mA.
As I said this is a standard but in different cases the external 3rd party USB devices need more power.
For example one of my external USB 2.5 HDDs must be connected to two USB ports at the same time to ensure that the HDD would get enough power to work properly.
Your external card is not known to me but possibly it needs more power as usual.

It's not just you, I can't authorise my phone. It seemed to go down just after I started the update (it wasn't my fault though). I am using chrome, and it does not seem to be a firewall issue, or the bannerblock issue that I read about else where, since I dont have that program installed. Strange though how the support forum is still running. If I go to http://www.apple.com/support I get nothing, but googling topics allows me to see em.

  • Does it matter where the external usb hub is plugged in?

I just got e new 7 port powered usb hub from Sitecom to connect a camera (once in a while) or card reader, printer(s), scanner, external drive etc. When I use one of the four ports on the backside of the iMac, only 1 -and only this one- specific port (let's name it "A" for now) of the Sitecom is recognised by the iMac. The other ports are not detected wether or not connected with an instrument.
But when I use the usb connection of the Apple-keyboard all of the 7 ports are detected.
    What's wrong here?

  • External USB Hub limit for Satellite Pro C650

Is there a limit to how many external usb ports you can connect through the Satellite Pro C650?
Wtih the four port hub I have, the ports seem to work individually and all devices work normally when plugged directly into the lap top, but when all devices are plugged into the hub and lap top combined, there are errors coming up.
    Thanks,
    Karyn

Well, I think this should not be a problem if the single USB hubs provide own power.
The point is that the single USB port provides common 500mA and if more devices would share the power from one USB port then it could be possible that the available 500mA would not be enough for all USB devices.

  • External usb hub with Mac

I have a Belkin powered usb hub that I used to use with my Windows computer.  Can I connect that to my Mac?  When I try it does not power up (it must be connected to both a computer and power source) - the Mac does not seem to recognize it.  Do I have to do something with the Mac?
    Thanks...
    PD

Yes you can connect it to your mac. The mac won't indicate that it's plugged in until you plug a usb device into the hub. For USB drives you're much better off using it plugged into the AC power source.

  • External USB Hard Drive Can't Be Safely Removed After Boot Camp 3.1 Install

I just wanted to report that I've done multiple installs of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on my MacBook 4,1 and although I've had no problem using the cmd workaround ( http://www.zath.co.uk/how-to-install-windows-7-on-apple-mac-boot-camp/ ) to install the 64-bit Boot Camp drivers that come with the Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard retail DVD, I have found that by installing the Boot Camp 3.1 drivers on the same system, under no circumstance can I click the the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system tray and not receive a message saying that ... "The device 'Generic Volume' cannot be safely ejected..." and that some program or service must be using it. However, a restart doesn't solve the problem any more than logging out does.
I read somewhere that part of the fix that Boot Camp 3.1 was intended to provide was to allow safe ejecting of the Macintosh HFS+ partition. Well, my external hard drive has three partitions: one NTFS, another NTFS, and a third HFS+ for Time Machine backups. I suspect, since I haven't seen anyone else reporting this issue, that it may simply be that the Boot Camp 3.1 drivers don't take into account the possibility of an HFS+ partition on external USB devices. Anyway, a System Restore to before Boot Camp 3.1 drivers were installed completely remedies the issue.
At this point, I'm not having any trackpad issues or anything else of note with respect to the original Boot Camp 3.0 drivers that came with the Snow Leopard retail disc, so I'm fine keeping those drivers installed and allowing Windows Update to update the Intel and Marvell drivers as it recommends. I just find it slightly amusing that the Boot Camp 3.0 drivers, which supposedly did not support Windows 7 (let alone the 64-bit version) work better than the 3.1 drivers which do supposedly support Windows 7. And the funny thing (or is it?) is that you have to install the original Boot Camp drivers with the cmd workaround before you're even able to update to the Boot Camp 3.1 drivers. Hilarious stuff there.
Proprietary gamesmanship is a big reason some of us prefer the Linux "share the ownership +for free+" model of computing. Just saying...
Anyone have any proper solutions (as in, other than "don't install the updates then!")?

I have a pair of external usb drives, one formatted for NTFS and the other for HFS+ connected through an external 7 port hub. I am running Windows 7 (64 bit) with bootcamp 3.1 on a late 2009 Mac BookPro. I share the same "safely remove hardware" issues you described. I always assumed it was because my external drives were connected through my external USB hub because of a similar issue I had running Vista (64 bit), but now I can confirm directly connecting the external USB HFS+ drive also yields the same "safely remove hardware" problem. Unfortunately for me, if I regress to the Bootcamp 3.0 drivers, my audio drivers, at times, fails to load. I would need to regress to Windows Vista (64 bit), the last environment where my iSight camera, internal speakers and all other hardware performed correctly. I would gladly, at this point, live with the "safely remove hardware" issue in exchange for a working iSight camera, the one and only hardware device lost to me in the move to Windows 7.

  • Does my mac osx 10.4.5 leopard have 2.0 usb hubs or 1.1 usb hubs??

    Hello,
Are all of the usb hubs on my new imac 2.0? I just purchased an audio interface for recording music and it will not allow multiple tracks to be recorded simultaneously if the hubs are 1.1. I need to know if I should return this interface and get a firewire. thanks for any help on this (I tried to find the answer myself by clicking on "about this mac" but nothing there about whether the hubs are 1.1 or 2.0... thanks again

Hi billyw: Assuming that your information about your system is correct in your signature, it will be USB 2.0 All iMacs since Sept. 2003 have used USB 2.0 If you are using an external USB hub, that is a different story.
    Good Luck

  • Using the integrated USB hub on my Thunderbolt Display causes troubles

I just purchased a MacBook Air and a Thunderbolt Display. Unfortunately, when I connect USB plugs to the Displays buildin USB hub, I'm getting severed connections all the time (USB-Connection lost, Firewire-Connection lost, Ethernet-Connection lost...).
I really loved the idea of not having to use external USB-hubs as this only clutters my desk - but the Displays internal hub cannot be used savely (I have a couple of hard drives connected via FW and USB to the Display - this has already resulted in data loss (fortunately I had a backup).
As soon as I'm NOT using the Display's USB ports everything is fine (the Display's FireWire and Ethernet ports do not seem to cause any trouble).
    Anyone else seeing this?

Plugging an additional USB hub into the integrated USB hub extends the problematic behavior even further.
If I eject a thumb drive from a USB hub that's attached to the Thunderbolt display hub (for example), it will never recognize that thumb drive again, on any of the USB ports on the display or any additional hub connected to the display, until I reboot with no added USB hub, and then reconnect an empty hub, and then add devices one at a time.
I've also noticed that while some devices drop off, some continue to show up in the system report, even when they have been properly ejected or disconnected. Refreshing the system report doesn't update with what's really going on...
Weird... So since mountain lion, I don't disconnect any USB devices from the Thunderbolt display, unless I really, truly must.

  • Inconsistant and unreliable TC when using USB hub

I have a 500 GB Time Capsule, and have a Sitecom USB hub connected to it. On the USB hub are 2 external HDs, totalling to 3 partitions externally, plus the 500GB internal HD. I also connect either a Sandisk SD card reader or a Sandisk USB stick to it.
Now, I just got the Time Capsule, gave it to my dad as a birthday present, and have just set the whole thing up. The thing is, it works well as a wireless router, but I cannot seem to get the USB connectivity working properly. When I try to access one of the USB-drives (be it a HD, card reader or USB stick), the thing crashes, the iMac freezes, and I have to restart both. The thing is, that it does not always does this. Sometimes it works fine, other times I have to enter my password and user name up to 3 times before it works, and even other times the TC just stares at me with a blank expression going "you want me to do WHAT NOW?!"
In other words, it is unreliable with the USB hub. The hub has always worked fine while attached directly to the iMac, but because I want to be able to use the external HDs with my laptop as well, I have descided to get them in the network.
Does anyone know what causes this behavior?

Even the TC can work with external USB hub, it's not very reliable, and I would not recommend it. In theory, USB hub should be transparent, but I don't think the Apple engineers have ever fully tested it. I think when you have two or more drives connected to the TC, TC has problem allocate system resources correctly internally.
My recommendation for the external USB drive configuration is to have just ONE single drive, with ONE single partition, either FAT or HFS+. USB hub should be fine but restrict it to just one drive, use HUB hub for printer seems to be fine, but then you are only allowed one printer per TC anyway.

  • Setting up a USB external Drive with USB Hub on Airport Extreme

I have successfully hooked up the Airport Extreme Base Station (n) with two printers using a USB Hub. I am now trying to hook up an external hard drive(acomdata 250 gb). When I plug the hard drive into the Hub and turn the drive on the Airport Extreme Base station resets to amber and flashes green for a second then resets to amber again and it keeps doing that until I shut the drive down. I have a Mac Book Pro and an iMac on the network as well as a HP pavilion a730n on the network. I am able to share files between the PC and the Macs; however I can't seem to share the external hard drive. I tested the external hard drive by hooking it up directly to the Mac book and after a few seconds it mounted correctly and I was able to read and write.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

What version of the AE firmware are you running? If you upgraded to 7.1, LOTS of people have discovered that Apple broke the USB connectivity for both disks and printers big time. With the 7.1 firmware version a few people can see the disks, but most people CANNOT see the printers.

  • External Drive won't show up when connected to Airport via USB Hub

I just got a new external HD and hooked it up out of the box. There were no problems until I tried copying 117 files to it. An error was encountered (Couldn't complete command due to something or other) and after that I never showed up on my computer again. I tried rebooting... hooking it up directly to the computer...the whole bit. Nothing.
So I then hooked it up to our laptop. It was found, I erased it, hooked it up to the desktop... it was found there as well... but whenever I hook it up wirelessly via the USB Hub and Airport... I can't get it.
Everything else that's hooked up to the hub is still working wirelessly (Printer Internet).
Is this an isssue with the drive?

Ya' know.. I'm not totally sure. I went to Airport Utility... selected my base station, clicked on Manual Setup... clicked on Disks and saw that my USB Drive was listed. After that I opened the finder, went to network, connected to my base station from there and my USB Drive popped up and I mounted it.
    It's been working fine since.

  • Looking for a good usb hub that will allow my mouse and external hard to work together

I'm looking for some ideas for a good usb hub that will allow me to use a wireless mouse and an external hard drive at the same time, without shorting out the mouse.  The one i currently have, when I plug in just the mouse, it's fine, but as soon as i put the external hard drive into the hub port, the mouse no longer works and i have to reinstall the drivers for the mouse.

Hubs and computers vary in their power needs, but it seems that your setup is lacking in the power department. This isn't a big deal with desktop computers, but since you use a MBP, you're going to do best with a powered USB hub.
If you're looking for a USB hub with power supply, Belkin is generally reliable (and above average in price). But the D-Link is compact, reliable, and has a good price. Aim for a USB 3.0 hub if possible, though 2.0 will work fine with just about anything. Insist on a refund if the hub doesn't work in your system. Make sure it's compact, since you'll be carrrying it around.

  • Could I use a USB hub to connection both a printer and an external hard drive to the time capsule?

I am planning on purchasing a new router.  The Time Capsule looks amazing.  However, I have Macs and PC's in my how.  So, I need to know if I can connect a printer (for all computers) and external hard drive (for the PC's) by way of a USB hub on the Time Capsule.  I've read that you can do this with the Air-Extreme.

    Couple of comments:
You will need to use a powered USB hub to connect multiple devices to the USB port on the Time Capsule
The hard drive for use with the PCs will not be compatible for use with the Time Capsule if it is currently formatted for Windows NTFS, which it likely may be if you have been using with the PCs.
Same info applies to the AirPort Extreme.
The following hard drive formats would be supported:
    Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    MS DOS FAT32
