External USB numeric keypad

Just got a no-name external USB numeric keypad but it doesn't work. Tried turning "num lock" on and off but nothing. System preferences wants me to press the key to the right of the shift key but there isn't one so it never identifies the keypad. Any suggestions appreciated.

I recently purchased a USB numeric keypad for my ibook, when I plugged it in, it detected it as an entire keyboard, not just a numeric keypad.. it works... kind of.. it asks me to hit the key to the right of the shift key.. there isnt a shift key on the keypad, therefore, I cant hit it.. it then says it cant identify it, and asks me to select it, so I select that its a standard keyboard...
Now, everytime I plug it in, it appears that my ctrl key is stuck, hitting a key on the keypad solves this, but obviously, if I start my computer with it plugged in, it starts in extensions-off mode.
I have looked around for any kind of info on this, and found nothing. Perhaps someone else here has seen this kind of

  • USB Numeric Keypad

I just bought a numeric keypad for my brand new iMac because I wanted the bluetooth keyboard. Unfortunately, when I plug it in, Leopard only recognizes it as a keyboard, but does not know which, and asks me to set it up, first by pressing the button to the left of the shift key. Needless to say, there is no shift key, and I cannot proceed with installation. I tried to hold down Num Lock as I installed it (read that it might help), but to no avail. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

  • Number lock - ThinkPad USB keyboard and USB numeric keypad- they're not independent

Because Lenovo has discontinued my favorite keyboard ever, the USB ThinkPad with Ultra Nav full size keyboard with number pad, I bought a keyboard and numeric pad separately. I ended up with the 55Y9003 ThinkPad USB Keyboard with Track Point and the 33L3225 numeric keypad. That gives me the full solution, a good keyboard with a numeric keypad. Well, almost.
The issue I'm having is that the number lock on the main keyboard (turns the "uio", "jkl" and other keys into a number pad) controls the number lock on the separate keypad, and vice versa. What I want is for the numeric keypad to always be set for numbers and my main keyboard to always be set for letters. Instead, what I have is both are set for numbers or not, together. This of course defeats the main point of having a separate keypad for the numbers.
Is there a setting somewhere to fix this? I'm running Windows XP Professional on an HP Compaq desktop computer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I have the same problem. Would be interested to hear of any solutions as well.

  • USB number keypad woes...

Just bought my Mac last week after 10 years of PCing. Absolutely brilliant so far, but when I plugged in an external Targus numeric keypad (crunching too many numbers at the moment) the OS asked me to press the shift key, as it couldn't recognise it.
Anyway, being stupid I just thumped any old key and now it doesn't do anything. Targus don't have any drivers for it...
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Lawrence.

The first thing I would try is to unplug the keypad, shut down the Mac. Restart the Mac. plug the keypad in to a different port, if possible, and try again. If it still doesn't work try running the Apple System Profiler and see if it recognizes the keypad. You can access the system profiler from the blue apple at the far left side of your menu bar. When it brings up the basic information click on the "more" button.

  • How do I get PowerBook G4 with Tiger to identify external Numeric Keypad?

I just bought a Travel Solutions Portable Numeric Keypad Model 60-320, which says on the packaging System Requirements: Windows 98, 2000, Me,XP or Mac OS.
    The Installation instructions say:
Connect the USB cable of the Numeric Keypad to the USB port on your computer. Your computer will automatically read the keypad. You are now ready to use.
    I have Mac OS X 10.4.7
When I plug the Keypad in the Keyboard Setup Assistant opens, with Introduction: Your keyboard cannot be identified and will not be usable until it is identified. To identify this keyboard click Continue.
On clicking Continue, one is required to press the key immediately to the right of the Shift key on the left side of the external keyboard.
It apparently did not occur to whoever wrote this Setup Assistant that people are more likely to want to plug in numeric keypads rather than full keyboards, and that numeric keypads do not have Shift keys!
How do I get the computer to identify the Keypad?

I cannot answer your question, but maybe you can return the keypad you bought and get the Kensington keypad/calculator <http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009L1XO/102-7465461-6085726?v=glance&n=172 282>, which works fine with my PB G4.

  • The "enter" key on the numeric keypad of my external mac keyboard has stopped working. Help!

The "enter" key on the numeric keypad of my external mac keyboard has stopped working with my Macbook pro.  If I plug the keyboard into any other computer, that entier key works fine. I'm using a standard Mac wired keyboard, & it's worked fine for 2 years now. Help!
This is the keyboard I am using: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB110LL/B/apple-keyboard-with-numeric-keypad
Not sure what I might have accidentily done to disable the enter key. (The normal enter key works fine, just the one on the numeric keypad.)
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi there,
Do you have any resolution to this problem in the end? Because it happened to me an exact same thing.
Please share if you have found a solution to your problem. I also cannot think of what I did wrong to disable the Enter key.

  • Apple USB Keyboard with Numeric Keypad Problem

    Hi,
    I have a Mac Mini macOS 10.5.8
I just bought an apple USB keyboard with numerci keypad (aluminium) and am having problems
    1/ If i hit @ i get <
    2/ if i hit < i get @
3/ the function keys do not work : if i hit fn F11 it displays the desktop (as F11 does also), i was expecting lower volume
4/ if i hit fn F12 i get the widgets (as with F12) i was expecting higher volume
    etc....
It seems my USB keyboard with numeric keypad is not recognized.
If i look at the Keyboard Visualizer (top right) it displays a keyboard that does NOT look like mine, it is smaller.
Why isn't this keyboard correctly recognized ?
    Thanks
    Marc

ok thanks for the tip and yes i admit i didn't see that...
but it seems a little weird to have to upgrade all the OS to Snow Leopard just to use a keyboard.
That kind of new device should be configured through a driver to download...shouldn't it ?
I presume there's no keyboard driver that can solve my problem.. ?
so you confirm that if i pay for Snow Leopard and upgrade my OS, my keyword will definitely work correctly with my Mac Mini ?
    Thanks

  • Numlock behaving oddly when using external numeric keypad

Hi guys, I have a user who's num-lock toggles between on and off with every key stroke when typing on her external numeric keypad.  We have switched out her pad 3 times and made sure the keypads worked in the Dells we have at other stations.  Any idea why this maybe happening?

It works for me on 10g but the only pitfall is the " * ", the workaround is to use the " & " in the label next to the key you want.
    for example:
    Button*   label &*
    Button-   label   &-
    Button/   label   &/
    Button+   label   &+
    Button.   label   &.Try it

  • Numeric Keypad USB Keyboard

    Hello,
As my Alias says it, I am new to Mac. I purchased an external keyboard which has a numeric keypad. The MacBook and the external keyboard have the French Canadian layout.
When I use the numeric keypad, the comma/period key defaults to comma. To get a period (i.e. decimal point) I have to use Shift+[,] or [CapsLock]+[,]. Is it possible to set the default action to a period and the alternate action to comma?
    Thank you

    Thank you for the tip.
And unfortunately you were right. I tried many keyboard configurations and none would give me the period without loosing the french Canadian keyboard layout. Another funny thing is that the caculator will accept either the comma or the the period as the decimal separator. In Spotlight only the period is valid as a decimal separator.
Maybe this should be a feauture request for an upcoming keyboard driver update.

  • Introduce a keyboard with built in numeric keypad option on the W500 Lenovo!!

Ok, so this is not so much of a question as suggestion to Lenovo and call for any who think its a good idea to ad your support in appealing to Lenovo to offer it.
There are a number of competitors out there who make 15.x inch laptops and provide a numeric keypad on the keyboard. I do a lot of entering of numbers (and I suspect do a significant proportion of other potential W500 buyers) and not having a numeric keypad is a real limitation. Separate USB keypads don't really fix the problem because they don't offer the convenience and ergonomics of having it on the keyboard. Given the fact that it is aimed at true power users who can justify its cost, it should also offer the option of the keypad. I know this would mean a redesign but I believe there is enough room there (there may need to be some resizing of the current keys to fit it in but for those who crunch a lot of number its would be worth it. Given that many of the competitors who offer less capable machines can successfully fit the numeric keypad on a 15 inch machine then Lenovo should be able to do it without stuffing up the integrity/userbility if the current keyboard.
    Anyone agree?

The laptops my employer provides (probook 6550b & elitebook 8560's) have numeric keypads. What I dislike about the keyboards with them is how off-center the keyboard, track pad and touch pad are. Haveing the keybpard centered is much better for true mobile work. A number pad sounds nice, and If I were an accountant, CPA or someone that works with numbers a great deal, it coul dbe a desireable feature. (or get an external number pad if that important.) Overll, I like the placement of lenovo's keyboard and other keys much better than what HP has done.

  • Numeric keypad on T430?

Hi, I recently got a new Thinkpad T430 from my employer and I am quite happy with it.
There is however one minor drawback. The numeric keys, normally accessible with the Fn key, have gone. I guess this makes sense for most users, but I actually use it quite a lot to get the é character. Just press both the Fn and Ctrl buttons, type 130 on the numerical keypad and there it is.
Is there a way to get this back? I don't want to keep my keyboard on US, and having to go to the character map every time is a pain!
    Any help is much appreciated!

    Hi, cdeloos
In my opinion, the simplest solution would be to purchase an external USB Number Pad. This will cost a little bit of money, but I don't think there is any other way to get the Alt codes without a Number Pad, save for using the character map, which can be very tedious. Having to carry the keypad with you as well as the machine when you're on the go may cause a bit of hassle, but you should be able to do the Alt codes again.
    Hope it helps,
    Adam

  • Performance Issues with 10.6.7 and External USB Drives

I've had a few performance issues come up with the latest 10.6.7 that seem to be related to external USB drives. I have a 2TB USB drive tha I have my iMovie content on this drive and after 10.6.7 update, iMovie is almost unusable. Finder even seems slow when browsing files on this drive as well. It seems like any access to the drive is delayed in all applications. Before the update, the performance was acceptable, but now it almost unusable. Most of the files on this drive are large dv files.
    Anyone else experience this?

    Matt,
If you want help, please start your own thread here:

And if your previous thread you aren't getting sufficient help for your iPhone, post a new topic here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1139
You'll get a wider audience, and won't confuse the original poster. Performance issues can be caused by numerous issues as outlined in my FAQ*
    http://www.macmaps.com/Macosxspeed.html
If every person who had a performance issue posted to this thread, we'd never find a solution for the initial poster. Let's isolate each case one by one. It is NOT necessarily the same issue, even if the symptoms are the same. There are numerous contributing factors at work with computers, and if we don't isolate them, we'll never get to the root cause.

  • Lost numerical keypad function

During the middle of a long photo editing session the num lock light went out and the numeric keypad ceased to function. Pushing num lock didn't change anything. Removed all other USB devices, tried all the USB ports, restarted, reinstalled OS. Nothing worked. Replaced keyboard with new one and repeated all of the above. Still nothing. Any suggestions?

    Are "mouse keys" on?
    Try this:
System Preferences - Universal Access - "Mouse" tab - mouse keys: off
