External USB Storage - Formatting

I recently purchased a SimpleDrive 320 GB external HD by SimpleTech. I want to use it with my Dell PC and my Macbook. The instructions say if I want to use it for both I need to format it as a FAT32 volume and to look at my Mac documentation to see how to do that.
Problem, I have no idea where the documentation is. I have searched this sight and could not find it. Nothing came with the Mac.
Can anyone help with how to format an external drive FAT32 with the Macbook?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Neil
I assume the entire drive becomes a FAT 32 then and I do not have to partition it?
Never did this at all before and just want to make sure I do it right. My hope is to have files copied on to the drive from my Dell, then burn them on the DVD burner (more storage) on the Mac as an additional backup

The external usb storage is only detected on a restart of the Z4 tablet. On my Z1 compact phone it is recognised when plugged in. Has anybody else had the same issue? Yes it is FAT32 and my phone has no issues with it. Thanks.

I have been in touch with Sony 'Xperia Care' about the issues I have raised with the USB support on the Z4 tablet. Again I have the full transcript, but the following extracts from their email confirm my worst suspicions. They said: 'I can confirm that when a USB device is connected to the tablet the SD card is meant to unmount.' and 'We would also not recommend using a USB hub on the tablet as this not the intended purpose of connecting a USB device to the tablet, the main one being for external storage. '
What follows is based on my experience  so far: This means that while a USB memory device is attached to the Z4 tablet, any app which has been transferred to the SD card will stop. If an app attempts to run in the background, the Z4 tablet can crash. This has happened on my Z4 tablet.Using 'Tap here to safely remove USB storage' does not re-mount the SD card. The only way to restore access to the SD card is to restart the Z4 tablet. On some occasions, both USB memory AND SD based apps work, despite what Xperia Care say! However this not the norm! When the USB device is removed, the SD card becomes unmounted!Although Sony do not recommend the use of USB hubs, they do work. However: If the hub offers power to the Z4 tablet, the Z4 will go in to 'charge' mode and disables the OTG data mode. If the hub is completely non-powered, the Z4 tablet is likely to disable power to the USB port and close it down if you attach multiple devices. It certainly can't power a USB powered hard drive, unlike my LG G3 phone which can! If the hub powers USB devices but not the Z4 tablet, it seems to work normally. However, the USB implementation on the Z4 can only support ONE memory device, again unlike my LG G3 phone which supports the two I have tried and probably more!I have told Xperia Care that I think the USB support on the Z4 tablet is a mess!

  • External USB storage no longer recognized by kernel [SOLVED]

If I plug in an external USB thumb drive, my system no longer sees it.
-gdisk and fdisk do not see it
    -gparted cannot see it
    -thunar cannot see it
I have a USB mouse and keyboard that work just fine.  Here is my dmesg.  You can see in the last line that something detected me plugging in the USB thumb drive, but that's it.  Is this something with udev or ?

I found this thread but my problem is different from the op's.
I run the linux-ck package from the AUR but as a sanity check, installed the ARCH kernel package and this problem exists under both:
    $ uname -r
    3.2.6-2-ARCH

I know this thread is marked solved, but I have the exact same problem - I just installed the linux-ck package from the AUR (running linux-ck version 3.2.11-1), alongwith the nvidia-ck package. The kernel was compiled with the localmodcfg and BFQ options enabled in the pkgbuild. Now when I plug in an external drive, dmesg detects it, but no device nodes are created under /dev.
There is nothing wrong with the drives (happens with multiple drives) - and they are mounting fine under the stock kernel. lsusb also shows the drive present. I thought this might be an issue with needing to rebuild initramfs using mkinitcpio, but the available hooks seem to include all the usual ones from the stock kernel, nor does the wiki article mention needing to do such a thing. Any ideas?
EDIT: I didn't notice in the OP that the problem persisted with both the -ck kernel and the stock kernel. In my case, it only persists with the -ck kernel - and this happens on two different computers.

  • External USB Storage not found Lenovo IX2

    Hello,
When I try to connect my 4TB External USB Drive to my ix2 it does not get gound. I also tried a friends 3TB Drive which does not work. When I connect a smaller 500gig drive it does get found.
It looks like large external USB drives are not accepted. Is there a solution for this?
    Thanks,
    Rigel

    Hi rigelpaulin,
This device cannot read external drives over 2TB. You will have to limit the partitions on the drive to 2TB or less.

  • How to make the WTR 610N external (USB) storage port my network common BackUP point..

My networked PC's (XP Pro & VISTA Ultimate OS's) are set up to share those Folders & files I've selected for BackUp.  I intend to connect a 600 Gb ext HD to my WTR 610N Ext Storage port.  I hope a simple instruction (Move to...;Copy to...; even  Point & drag) will suffice to create the BackUp.  What commands should I use to select location and name of that special BackUp port.?

How to Make my Macbook Pro's internal HDD external, when I get a SSD?
Get an externel enclosure at the same time.
    You can order from OWC
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Put the SSD in the externel enclosure and use something like Carbon Copy Cloner,  to clone the internal drive and all it content to the SSD.  Then swap them out.
Always good to have more than one backup.

  • Aperture can't empty Trash on USB storage (permissions)

    Problem:
    - Aperture 3.6 cannot delete referenced files located on external USB storage directly attached to my MacBook Pro with Yosemity.
    - When I try to empty Trash in Aperture, I get "You don’t have access to the System Trash on the original files’ volume."
The drive is NTFS formatted 4Tb in RAID-1 (Raidon's GR3630-SB3 model).
I have Paragon's "NTFS  for Mac OS" installed on my MacBook which works fine and Access Permissions enabled.
At the same time, I tested my 64Gb USB flash drive with NTFS and it worked FINE!
I played with permissions using 3rd party apps like BatChmod. No luck.
I googled and searched this Forum.
People had similar problems with NAS (networked) storage, though if a storage is directly attached, they say it should work as designed.
One solution is a script, though it skipped some of the referenced files - unpredictable results and risks to the master's library.
Any idea how to fix this drive or Aperture issue?
    Thanks.

I can't confirm now if drive's trashes can be seen in the main Mac Trash. It's busy replicating RAID1 now. I will check later.
That is your next step. Post back when you can test it.
However as noted, this will always be problematic and if reformatting the drive for OS X is not possible then I'd strongly suggest you get a drive to store your referenced originals on. Given the price of disk, just got 2tb for $80 US at newegg this would seem to be your best option.

  • E4200 usb storage cifs support?

does e4200 have cifs support. I ask because I have a hard drive connected thru the usb and trying to setup nas storage. But for the hp touchpad to mount it it needs cifs I guess.

Yes E4200 does support CIFS (Common Internet File System) for the storage Hard Drive…Here is the link for the external USB storage devices tested to work with the router, along with their disk storage formats.

  • External USB hard drive spontaneously ejects.

I have a 2 TB external USB drive (OWC Mercury Elite AL Pro/Hitachi) connected to my iMac that is spontaneously ejecting. It worked pretty much fine for a long time, and the only big change is upgrading to Snow Leopard. It seems to happen when I am trying to back up, either with Time Machine or with Backup. When I try a drag and drop back up of iPhoto Library, I get an error 36 message, and the drive ejects. IPhoto is only up to date backed up in Time Machine on a partition on the same drive (bought another drive and will put TM and another backup on that one from now on!), so I want to avoid formatting if possible (and don't know if it is a drive problem anyway). Really would like to make sure I have a good backup before I do anything! Tried fixing iPhoto permissions by rebuilding, but don't know if it worked. Read about using iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild, but haven't tried that yet. Techtool is giving me a fail message for video ram, too.
If anyone has any thoughts I would appreciate it!

This sounds very much like the problem I am experiencing. I have a Core i5 27" iMac which was purchased back in December. External USB storage devices (including an iPod shuffle) spontaneously disconnect without warning. Time machine backups will fail while they are in progress at different points in time. iTunes sync operations with my iPod shuffle will sometimes be interrupted. I have no USB hubs connected to my machine. Nor any other devices. The cabling is very good quality and free from sources of noise. The same external drive and cable worked fine with my Mac Pro. I'm running a 64 bit kernel, but I've seen the same problem booted in the 32 bit kernel.

  • Windows 7 Professional XP Mode won't recognize internal DVD or external USB drives

Windows 7 Professional XP Mode - won't recognize USB external drives or internal DVD drive
I recently purchased a new Toshiba laptop and ordered configured with Windows 7 Professional so I could use XP mode for some older programs.  The Virtual Mode and XP mode work ok, but the computer will not
recognize any external USB storage drives or the internal DVD drive.  This prevents me from saving and transferring any file that I work on in XP mode.
,I also tried to copy and paste the file from XP Mode over to a document file to 7 Professional Mode, but it won't allow that.  It also will not recognize any printer when in XP Mode,
so I can't print out the file either.
Basically, I have no way to store or move a file out of the computer when in XP Mode.
Does anyone know what I need to do so that the computer will recognize the USB drives and internal DVD drive when I am running in XP mode?

    Checked these ?

  • Time Capsule doesn't allow to access NTFS external USB Disks

good morning. I've just configured a 2TB Timecapsule, in a wireless network with 2 MACBookPro and 1 windows xp.
A HP HJPro 8500 is connected to TC and is reachable via wireless, thru a Belkin USB port replicator.
two time machine's usb disks are connected thru the same belkin adapter and work fine.
Another two external usb disks, formatted as NTFS, are not visible at all (even if they are, if connected directly to the macs of to the xp.
I've tried to disconnect the TM disks, leaving connected only the two ntfs disks, with no results.
Any idea to solve this issue? i don't expect to have NTFS disks not accessible thru TC.. no manuals mentioned this as a problem..
    thank you in advance.

  • Boot from external USB disk

Is there any way to boot from an external USB disk formatted in NTFS or UFS (CD/DVD format)? Basically my idea was to be able to boot the Win7 install image from an USB device. I tried many different ways, I even have my old internal HDD with the boot camp partition in a USB case (I just upgraded to 500GB!! ;)) but I can't in any way boot from USB. Only OSX backup and its installation disk boot fine from an external USB source. Any idea?

It isn't well supported by Microsoft. The problem on Apple hardware is you can't even make changes to the BIOS boot manager.
I have 4 internal hard drives so it is rather easy to boot from one hard drive and run the installer.
You ran into the lack of support for UEFI though which adds another layer and meant most likely having to alter and reburn the ISO to disc with Imgburn or something (and can be done from Windows only so you need a VM).
I got tired of the trouble and work arounds needed though and in the end I just built my own custom PCs - one of which has native eSATA that are bootable (an Intel DX58SO board).
Oh, and it is easy to install Windows 7 on PC, then just move the drive into Mac Pro and boot from there!

  • USB external mass storage devices doesn't work.

    Hey guys,
I couldn't find any answer to my problem so I hope you can help me...
I have USB Seagate external USB drive which was working perfectly with my mac until I installed VMware. The thing is that since first time I installed XP on VMware and unmounted my external drive from OSx and mounted in for virtual machine the drive is no longer visible in Mac OS no matter if I unmount it from virtual machine, plug/unplug from port, turn off VMware, restart macbook in any possible sequence combination. However I can use it easily in virtual machine or on other PC. Problem is not files type related, because I've already checked it, what is more I didn't format the drive and earlier it worked.
What is more now I can't even see my pendrive despite the fact that both Seagate drive and pendrives are visible in system profiler. My USB mouse works perfectly so problem apparently is only with data storage devices.
During the installation an error pop up concerning "IOUSBMassStorage" file but after installation of VMware everything was working until I mounted in on virtual machine.
EDIT: I almost forgot to add that I uninstalled VMware and the problem still occurs.
Thanks for any help in advance.

I was trying to install update USBFamilly and now also VMware again and in both cases I get error saying that USBMassStorageClass was installed improperly.
I found few topics about this file on the internet that it controls exactly what I have problem with but couldn't find solution for how to reinstll this file.
    Any ideas ?

  • External USB Drive hangs Disk Utility when trying to Format

    Hello Everyone,
I have a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300gig hard drive in an enclosure connected to my iMAC via USB. The drive was previously used on an Win XP pc and worked fine. I want to format it and use it as a backup for my MAC. When I plug in the drive, OS X says that it can't read the drive and asks if I want to initalize it. I go ahead and select 1 partition Extended Journaled and hit go. The Maxtor spins up for a few mins and then the colour wheel shows up and the Disk Utility shows not responding and the light on the Maxtor goes off. I have to force quit to get the Disk Utility to shutdown. I can format and parition the drive no problem on the XP pc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I also had a problem initializing and partitioning a new Seagate Barracuda 400GB drive with the NexStar GX (NST-370GX) external USB enclosure as described above. Neither my G4 MacBook Pro or my Mac Mini Dual core could initialize or partition the enclosure/drive. I could however hook the enclosure up to my XP machine, format it using NTFS, and access (read) the drive on my Mac Mini just fine. I didn't check it on the laptop though after formatting it using XP. This still was unacceptable.
After doing some searching online, I discovered this post on 123macmini.com:
    http://www.123macmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2629
where the post points out that the NexStar GX enclosure is a rebranded Macpower M9-LX. Then I discovered on the Macpower site:
    http://www.macpower.com.tw/products/hdd3/m9/m9lx
that the enclosure is not compatible with any Seagate Barracuda drive greater than 160GB. Doh!
After swapping out the Barracuda drive for a 300GB Western Digital drive I could then initialize, partition, and use the enclosure on my Mac Mini without any problem.
    I was using OSX 10.4.7
I hope this helps others out there with the same configuration.

  • Mac mini core2 duo 10.7.2 not seeing files on usb external drives - mac formatted - ownership ignored-  until finder refresh - any idea

finder has problems showing folders& files on external drives on mac mini with 10.7.2
this is affecting 2 external usb drives both mac formatted - ownership ignored
i click on the drive and see nothing
a refresh of the finder window will make the files appear
if i click on a disclosure arrow, the arrow turns down but no files are displayed
if i double click on the folder it opens that folder in an empty view - a refresh will bring the files visible
interestingly if i eject the drive and plug back it , it will usually display the contents of folders already visited last time but not folders i hadn't looked at - they require a refresh
programs such as iTunes can link to those files when they are not visible in finder
anyone else run into this - any suggestions
oh and drives seem to be working fine on my macbook pro with 10.7.3
    cheers folks
    Simon

John -I'm pretty sure it the mac mini thats having the issue
the two drives - each with their own cable - seem to work perfectly with my other mac
the mac mini is having no problem reading the files itunes and other programs access the files on the drives without a problem
its just the finder is not displaying the files without a refresh of the view
    but thanks anyway

  • Is it possible to format an external USB drive with XFS or EXT3 ?

    Greetings all.
I am running a 2,8Ghz 8x core with 6Gb ram. I have a NAS, (Buffalo Pro Duo Linkstation) which has a built in linux which saves data using XFS (I think). It has a built in backup routine, but the drive it backs up to MUST be in XFS or EXT3 (Fat 32 works but it drops all files over 2GB ;( ... ) So - here's my question:
How can I format the external USB drive (A seagate freeagent) in XFS or EXT3 so that it can run on my Buffalo? My preference is to use a GUI mac program (does one exist?) or to use a command line UNIX command (FSK? - but then, how????). I could also use (GASP!) a windows utility on parallels, or even install a linux distro via parallels. But it should be easy I hope...
Looking forward to any ideas/thoughts, tips, etc.
thanks and best to all from Berlin,
    Jason

Download a "Live CD" (one you can boot of into running copy of Linux without having to install anything; for example, [OpenSUSE Live CD|http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0/iso/cd/openSUSE-11.0-GNOME-Li veCD-x86_64.iso]).
Use OS X' Disk Utility to burn it to a CD.
Insert the CD you just burned (if it ejected afterwards), and then restart your Mac.
Hold down the 'C' key on the keyboard as the Mac boots, and it should switch to booting off the CD. Once the CD starts loading, you can let go. It will take a couple of minutes, but it will eventually boot into Linux.
    Attach your USB drive.
Run gparted (you need to search the menus for it, it's under system administration, I think -- or you can open up a terminal window and simply type 'gparted').
Find your disk (/dev/sdb or /dev/sda) and partition and format it using the filesystem you want.
When done, restart the computer. You'll boot back into Mac OS X and have an EXT2/EXT3/XFS formatted external drive (that OS X won't recognize, by the way).
