External usb ultranav keyboard; no trackpoint using ibm/lenovo driver in Win XP

I just got an external USB ultranav travel keyboard (product #31P9490) and I am trying to make it work with Windows XP.
When I just plug in the keyboard, the default windows USB keyboard and mouse drivers work well enough that I can use the keyboard as well as the touchpad and the trackpoint.
But, when I install the two official drivers (one for the keyboard "hotkeys", the other for the touchpad and trackpoint from Synaptics) then I lose the trackpoint fuctions.  These are the two latest drivers linked to this web page:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-60649
After the Synaptics driver is installed, the option to enable the trackpoint is greyed out. All the touchpad functions (scroll zones, tapping, etc.) seem to work. The keyboard function keys work also. But, the trackpoint is non-responsive.  The "Synaptics touchstyck" driver doesn't seem to do anything.  The trackpoint is no longer associated with the generic USB mouse driver, so the trackpoint stick and three buttons no longer do anything.
My situation is similar to what is described here, except I don't think there is any mechanical problems since the trackpoint works fine with the default mouse driver:
http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=Options&message.id=322&query.id=75669#M322
I tried the drivers on two different Dell PCs and got the same result.
Has anybody have one of these keyboards gotten the trackpoint to work with the IBM/lenovo drivers?
Thanks,
Doug

I'm obviously doing something wrong. Several reboots later, I'm stuck with the same inability to turn the touchpad off. Here is what I did.
1) Uninstall the driver - success. Prompted to reboot.
2) Rebooted.
3) Installed installation program (started at page MIGR-60649); ran the downloaded file (q2kyb02us13.exe) and changed install path from the default C:\IBMTOOLS\drivers\q2kyb02us13 to c:\Drivers\q2kyb02us13 .
4) Ran setup.exe from that location.
5) It seemed to work properly and I was prompted to reboot. I started the process but was alerted to a window telling me to check the installation and possibly redo it for compatibility with recommended settings. I did *not* do this but forced the reboot.
6) Back up, I clicked on Start ... Devices and Printers, and right-clicked on IBM Keyboard with UltraNav. I had options for the mouse and keyboard, but nothing about Ultranav.
7) I tried to uninstall, but this driver no longer appeared on my list of installed programs. Yikes! I tried again, this time going with the default location (C:\IBMTOOLS\drivers\q2kyb02us13) and catching the compatibility wizard - and letting it reinstall with recommended settings.
8) Reboot and still can't update the Ultranav - and still don't see it listed in installed programs.
Help! What am I doing wrong??

  • External USB Ultranav Keyboard w/ Trackpoint and Trackpad (P/N 41A5091)

I have been loving this keyboard that I used to use with my Thinkpad. I now have a new desktop and am using this same keyboard. My machine is a 64-bit Win7 system. I can't find a driver that will work with it; the keyboard works fine but I keep stumbling on the Trackpad which I'd like to turn off. How can I do that? I've done a bunch of searching and even tried some Thinkpad device drivers, all to no avail. Thanks!

  • Availability of USB UltraNav Keyboard?

    Hi,
I've checked Lenovo's site several times for the past couple of weeks the Thinkpad USB UltraNav keyboard with trackpoint and the extra USB connects at the keyboard.  I currently have one of these (SK-8845, PN 41A5161).   However all I can find on the Lenovo site lately is the USB TrackPoint Keyboard with no UltraNav and no integrated USB ports.  What Gives?
Is this keyboard not avaialble on backorder or just no longer made?   I really need it to replace a worn out USB UltraNav/Trackpoint Keyboard on a docking station.
    Thanks,
    GC Mobley

I found my answer...withdrawn from marketing fall of 2009, replaced by cheaper non-ultranav keyboard with NO integrated UltraNAV and NO integrated USB ports.
So there is no NO WAY to hook up a docking station to a Lenovo Thinkpad and have an external USB keyboard which has UltraNav and Trackpoint - birlliant, just brilliant.

Hello... is there anyone in Lenovo listening?

  • USB Ultranav keyboard does not work with Windows 7

Hi, I recently installed Windows 7 to my Dell Latitude XT tablet and was disappointed to learn that my USB Ultranav Keyboard only works as a keyboard and not a 'mouse'; that is, the ultranav devices (touchpad, buttons, and trackpoint) do not work.  I have not had problems with the keyboard functioning in XP or Vista, so it was surprising to find that it will not work with W7.
I thought all was going well when W7 recognized the Ultranav keyboard when I plugged-in the device, but all did not go as planned.  I let W7 find the drivers through Windows update, but then once they didn't prove to work, I followed W7's directions of reinstalling the drivers in its version of 'Compatability Mode', but that still didn't prove to work.  I would really appreciate any insights into this problem as it is one of my only (current) hesitancies about using W7.
Thank you for your time and attention to my inquiry.
    Cheers,
    Tsugazi

Hi, strangely enough, I got it to work.  Here's the what I did differently (for those with a similar problem):
After installing W7, I plugged in my keyboard and let Windows find the drivers.  When this didn't provide functionality of the ultranav devices, I tried installing the Ultranav drivers, and when Windows said there was a compatability problem, I then opted to let Windows re-install the Ultranav driver.  Unfortunately, this didn't provide functionality either.
Jump ahead 12 hrs and re-install of W7 (for other reasons).  This time out, I installed the Ultranav driver, THEN plugged in my keyboard.  Everything works now!  I don't know that this sequence will work for everyone, but it did for me.
    Thanks for your comments.

  • USB UltraNav keyboard problems

I have a model SK-8835 external USB Trackpoint UltraNav keyboard attached to an advanced minidock model 2504 and a T60p model 2007-CQ8 running Windows XP. I have the latest BIOS and drivers and Windows fixes.
I have the following symptom: when I use the middle button to scroll, sometimes the scroll function ends up being left on when I release the button. The external keyboard stops responding to mouse clicks. I have to click on the mouse buttons on the internal laptop keyboard to get out of scrolling mode. But then sometimes I can't click on buttons in the Windows task bar.
I have a second problem: I have disabled the touchpad on the internal keyboard via the "Ultranav" tab on the Mouse settings window. But I can't find a way to disable the touchpad on the external keyboard.
I tried to install the "Think/Travel USB Keyboard with UltraNav Hotkey driver v2.0.1.3" (q5kyb07us13.exe) from http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-60649 but I get this error message and it refuses to install: "A newer version of the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver is installed. If you want to install the older version of the Driver, please uninstall the current Synaptics driver by selecting "Synaptics Pointing Device" from the "Add/Remove Programs" control panel, and then run setup again." But there is no such program listed in that control panel.

    Hi mlinehan,
it seems like you are having a problem much less similar to mine the first time i used this keyboard.
it works flawlessly now for me after doing this:
1.download and install the keyboard driver (lenovo.com)
2.download and install the hotkey driver (strange you are having a difficulty installing this, if you successfully install this it is possible that the problem is just gone imho)
3.download and install keyboard customiser (lenovo.com, if you do want to customise the short-cut functions)
well, since you are stuck at step 2 at the moment, i doubt that i am much of a help here anyway, hope it helps.

  • Would love to see a USB numerical keyboard with trackpoint device.

    Hi Lenovo,
I have a new computer but miss my trackpoint terribly. Searched the web for a portable replacement but there seem to be only touchpads or trackball solutions out there. I think your numerical keyboard with a trackpoint would have been a perfect match.
    Best regards

Maybe you can buy two Lenovo products, one is the latest ThinkPad Compact Bluetooth or USB Keyboard with TrackPoint, another is a ThinkPad Numpad.

  • External USB SuperDrive-cannot get it to work-need driver for it?

CD driver in my IMAC gave up . I tried several externals, that didn't work
Broke down and bought Apple External USB SuperDrive.
The store said just plug it in, and it will work.
Nothing! Is there a driver needed for it for 24" Intel IMAC, with Snow Leopard.
Supid to buy it from Best Buy, instead of the Apple Certified repair store, I guess.

Ah. You're looking to *play* discs, not just burn them! No, burning is not necessary - you mentioned a Super-Drive, which has the burn capacity and I though that was your main agenda. It's more basic than that. Okay, I got it.
Does the DVD player come up when you insert a DVD?
If not, there is a control panel in the System Preferences - in the Hardware settings.
The CD's & DVD's control panel. (It's furthest on the left, second row down)
Open that and there are the 'what to do's' for blank and burned/premade discs..
Make sure that the setting for 'When you insert a video DVD' is set to open the DVD player.
The 'radio bar' button to the right will open a drop-down menu and it should be set to play the disc, but if someone got in and fiddled with it, God knows what the settings can end up..
(The DVD app is not loaded in the Dock, by default and it should be! If you use the DVD player alot, go and drag the program straight out of the Applications folder and drop it wherever you like down inside the Dock!)
If the DVD player is not working for whatever mysterious reason, the second option is to try VLC (http://videolan.org) it is free, and is THE most robust media player for almost every type of video there is.
Install that and go into the System Preferences and back to the CD/DVD panel and set the machine to use VLC when you put in a DVD. See what that gets.
Good luck! I'll leave you tonight and will check in tomorrow... Goodness, it's after 2 a.m.. I'm off to sleep.

After upgrading to Mavericks OS, my external keyboard's backspace key has stopped working. I have gone through my keyboard settings and unable to find any problems. The backspace works fine on another computer. Any ideas what the problem is?

  • External USB keyboard

    Hi,
Is it possible to use an external USB qwerty keyboard at the same time as I use my build in azerty keyboard?
For text etc, I like to use my azerty, but the keyboard commands on Final Cut, Photoshop etc, are more user friendly on a qwerty.
So can I use them both at the same time
(for example, use Final Cut with qwerty, and switch from "space" to send emails (with azerty))
    Thanks for helping

Someone on geekhack suggested that I try a powered hub.  Having no hub available, I plugged it into the "powered" hub in the back.  For now it seems to have remedied the problem.  I will post again if it continues to happen.
    Is your hub powered?

  • Problems Installing Win7 using External, USB DVD Drive

I have a mid 2010 15" i7 MBP which I upgraded to from 4GB to 8GB RAM courtesy of OWC.  I recently upgraded the 500GB 7200RPM HD with a 240GB OCZ Vertex 3 and using an OWC Data Doubler, I replaced the DVD SuperDrive with the 500GB Hard Drive.
I used an External USB DVD Drive to install OS X SL On the SSD without issues. Also, I got all my updates and software installed and working without any problems.
I've been running great for about 2 weeks now, so I decided to install Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. I ran Boot Camp Assistant and partitioned the 240GB SSD in half 120/120. Everything went fine with creating the partition. I selected to Install from the Win 7 DVD media in the USB DVD drive and rebooted.  I got a grey screen.  I turned the computer off and turned it back on.  Holding down Option, I selected the Install DVD from the Boot Menu.  I then got a screen with the Apple Logo flashing intermittently with a Circle/Cross Hatch.  So I can't get the Windows Install to start to save my life.  I know the External, USB DVD works since I used it to install OS X and I have no problems using it in OS X.  I Know the media works because I tried a test install, without activation in a VMWare Fusion VM.
    Any suggestions are appreciated?

So here is the answer.  The Firmware on the MacBook Pro only supports installation of OS X from External Media and will not install operating systems from 3rd Parties.  I tried to install Windows XP, Win7 Ultimate  32 & 64bit, and Ubuntu 11.04 but no success.
Supposedly, the MacBook Air does support installation of 3rd party operating systems from external media, but I have no way to confirm this.
I ended up reinstalling the internal DVD drive installing Win 7 and Ubuntu on the SSD.  Using rEFI, I'm able to triple boot all 3 operating systems.  Then removed the drive again and reinstalled the 2nd HD. Everything seems to be working fine.
I'm looking for someone who has experience in Mac EFI Hacking to see if there is a way to enable booting 3rd Party OSes from external media.  I'm guessing someone could examine the MBA firmware and figure out how to hack that capability into the MBP.

  • Problem with USB travel keyboard on Windows 7 (some letters become a number)

    Hi
I have an USB Travel Keyboard with trackpoint and touchpad. Have used for years in XP.
Now I have bought a new computer, using Windows 7 and Asus P6X58D Premium motherboard.
After installing Windows 7 I noticed that when I press some keys I get a number instead of a letter.
I have managed to install drivers for the USB travel keyboard. And can enter the place where I can change speed of TrackPoint etc....
    Now some weird stuff:
The keyboard actually work if I e.g. enter Internet via "Asus Express Gate".
(This is a feature with the motherboard which enables me to run some small numbers of applications without having to start windows, thus enabling superfast access to Internet etc.)
If I let Windows 7 start, then some keys/letters only show numbers.
To me it sounds weird if keyboard only works in "Asus Express Gate" applications and not in when I e.g. use Internet or any text editor in Windows 7.
Maybe there is a settings in BIOS that is set automatically when entering "Asus Express Gate", that I might have to set manually to make the USB keyboard work while in Windows 7 (64bit) ???
I have looked in the BIOS UI without any luck...
    Any suggestions?

  • Desperate of ultranav keyboard with touchpad & num pad.

I am in desperate need of a USB ultranav keyboard with touchpad and numeric pad.
I've checked with lenovo hong kong, but i've been told this accessories was fade out..
    the part number is 31p8950
Where can i get 1 of these on earth, please? or is there any other lenovo service center has one of this in stock?
i really wish to buy one of it.

I see your point. Maybe try apple's feedback portal and point this out. I don't use a numeric pad on the 17" but perhaps they should introduce this on 17" or even 19" machines for users like you. Carrying a keyboard around would suck, if you just wanted to move from one room to another.
However, I've heard there's an ipod touch/iphone app called NumberKey that gives you a numeric pad - any use?

  • Inland external usp mouse malfunctioning when used with HP Pavilion dv6-2155dx laptop.

I have a external usb mouse I have been using with my HP laptop for over two years now and it has always worked without a problem. This week it suddenly stopped working properly. Often it does not work when I click on it even after several tries. Due to disability with hands it is too hard to use the pointer on the pad on my laptop. I need to use a mouse.
I am not sure if it is a bug from a recent software update or an issue with my snyaptics program (which is what I suspect).  I am older and my computer knowledge is not so good anymore.
What can I do to diagnose to see where the problem is. I cannot afford to take my laptop in for service right now.
    Thanks

    Hi Richard61,
Thank you for your post, I will do my best to assist you.
I understand that your mouse is not working properly.  Here is a document onTroubleshooting Mouse Problems (Windows 7, Vista, XP).  Have you tried a different usb mouse?  Have you tried it in a different USB port?
It is not the synaptics program as that has to do with Touchpads, not the mouse.  If you believe it was an update, you may be able to do a system restore back to when it was working correctly.  You could try running  MS Fix It to help resolve issues and look for updates. You should also run the HP Support Assistant  to aid with updates and resolve issues.  Please let me know how it turns out.

  • Booting os from External usb hd problem

First i tried firewire, i found the partitions and could make new ones, but when i started to copy windows files the instalation refused to go on. Ok so i tried the usb port, i could now copy all the windows files, the pc rebooted and the xp logo was turning up as it supose to but right when the main instalation was supose to start i get a nice bluescreen instead, telling me my hard disk is corrupt, that is not true, checked it sevral times, tried to reinstall only to have the same problem again (also went into bios and tried diff settings with the usb hardisk boot etc)
Im positiv that this should work, im so close but what im i missing to get to install my xp on external usb hardisk controller?
i use kn8 platinium with all the newest drivers and bios flash.
Thankful for any sugestion or reply!!
Edit: i want i dual boot as i run xp on my internal hardisk.

But i should work, heard many that pulled this off.Ii think that if you could have a portable bootable external hardisk, it would be perfect for bringing home the exact system from work (when you have similar or exact same specs on your pc).  Well no matter what my reasons should be i want to pull this off
And i dont think Xp is the problem, the last thing i tried was setting the usb disk active from managment, but that didnt work either. If anyone have any info at all i would gladly take it.

I have a brand-new 15" PB G4, 1.25 gHz. I purchased a (very inexpensive) external USB 2.0 enclosure for my old hard drive, a 40 GB 3.5" ATA internal drive. I was able to assemble everything and hook it all up, and it showed up on the desktop just fine. However, I want to reformat it. When I go into Disk Utility, the drive is seen, but when I say "Erase" (on either the drive itself or the single partition), the Utility either says "Partitioning..." forever or "Preparing to Erase..." forever (or at least as long as I was willing to wait). Does anyone know a) how I can make Disk Utility work, b) any other utilities that might do the trick for me, c) if I'll be able to format this drive on a USB 1 or 1.1 computer or d) how to be a badass and reformat the thing through the Terminal.
