External USB3 HDDs keeping trying to spin up while iMac is asleep

I recently added 2x My Book Studio 3TB USB 3.0 HDDs to my iMac. I set them up in a RAID 1 configuration using Disk Utility and I am using the resulting 3TB array for Time Machine backups. Everything seems to be working fine, with one exception: When the iMac goes to sleep, the external HDDs repeatedly try to spin up and immediately spin back down again. This happens every 15 seconds or so. This will even happen if I eject the drives before sleeping the iMac! Another odd symptom is my USB 2.0 hub (Belkin) powers up each time the HDDs try to spin up and shuts down again right after the HDDs spin back down. The HDDs are connected directly to the iMac, not the hub (obviously since they are USB 3.0). I'm well and truly stumped. I just want the external drives to sleep while the iMac is asleep.
"Put hard disks to sleep when possible" is checked under system prefs Energy Saver settings.
Any ideas on how to solve this please? I'm tempted to just return the drives and look for another solution but I'm not sure what to choose that I could be sure would not have this or some other problem....
Thanks for your help!

Thankfully I'm able to answer my own question. I have an LG BluRay burner attached to my Belkin USB hub and it seems that when it is turned on it periodically does something that activates the USB bus in the iMac. This is enough to cause the HDDs to briefly spin up and when they realise there is no activity they shut down again. Since this was happening every 15 seconds (approx) I have decided to just turn off the BluRay drive until needed, which thankfully is a rare event. I hope this helps others lose a little less hair over similar issues

  • Upgraded to 10.10.3, the external hard disk keep working and spinning after I ejected successfully, and the HHD keep lights up, feel unsafe to unplug it

I tried on two macbook air, same situation.
This never happen on 10.10.2 or previous version. (The HDD light will off and it will stop running after I ejected before.)
I feel unsafe to unplug the external hard disk when its still light up and running.
I am using Macbook book air 2012 and 2013 with seagate backup plus....
Anyone have same problem? how to fix it?
or its ok to unplug the HDD while the HDD light is still on and running?
MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

I have a G-Tech external hard drive that continues to spin after I have unmounted it and if I disconnect it while it is spinning it makes a very nasty sounding clunk noise. In my case it started doing this after I enabled FileVault a couple of years ago. I have found that if I unmount it and then wait 6 minutes it will stop spinning. It is inconvenient but I only use it once a week and the clunk sound is scary enough that I put up with the wait.

  • Time Capsule HDD keeps cycling on and off while my Mac is sleeping

Hi guys, I'm in a bit of a hurry so just gonna post dot points:
    • My Time Capsule's HDD keeps cycling on and off continuously and potentially doing heaps of damage to it's drive when my MacBook is sleeping.
    • Time Machine is set to automatically backup to my time capsule.
    • As soon as I wake up and log into my MacBook it seems to stop. I checked the time capsule icon immediately and it says "Preparing backup" so I assume it was stuck in that phrase.
    • I assume it backs up normally after waking up
    MacBook Pro Retina:
    • I usually never put my MacBook to sleep by closing the screen, so can't say if this happens when it's in closed screen sleep vs open screened sleep
    • I'm not sure if there's any difference between close screen sleep and open screen sleep
    • It is set to go to sleep automatically after 45mins of inactivity
    • My iTunes Library is stored off-device on a 2TB HDD connected to the Time Capsule

How old is the TC and on what firmware?
You have put Mountain Lion for OS.. is that still the case or upgraded to Mavericks??
There has been some issues at various times with disk spinning up ..

Is the computer set to power nap? Try turning that off.
Try unplugging the external drive with itunes library and see if that helps.
If it is TM the attempts to start the backup should be in the log.

I know Time Machine works only with HFS file system, that's why I've reserved half disk for it, I resized the disk with Windows and left half disk blank, then I had format the blank space with the disk utility in OSX, and Time Machine worked like a charm for some days, but after a while I have loop freezes and reboots... (I wiped the disk twice and after few days I have the same issue)
By the way, I want to know if it's possible to have on the same disk two partitions, one with HFS and NTFS,and use the HFS one for Time Machine, is this possible? if yes, may someone explain me the correct steps to prepare the disk? (I don't need too much details, just steps)
    Thanks in advance

  • External USB3-Drive doesn't wake up again on iMac but on MacBook

    Hi guys,
did anyone made this experience already too? I've a brand new external USB 3 case. When I connect it to my iMac, it works fine, even over many of hours if permanetly in use. But as soon as the drive goes into sleep mode, afterwards I can not access the files again in this session. You can list the 1st directory level only, but not deeper or access any files, but it keep visible as drive in Finder.. To resolve this, you have to turn off and on the drive and afterwards you can access it again.
This happens on my iMac, connected via USB 3, a current and up to date model.
However, when I connect this drive to an older MacBook Pro, there it works absolutly fine. This MBP does only have a USB 2 connector.
Any ideas how to fix this?
    Thx. in adv.!

I have a similar issue on my Mini.  I have an external (Macally) USB3 enclosure.  I have a WD 1TB dirve inside.  It runs fine for several hours and then after powering down (sleep) it will not come up again.  Sometimes it operates fine (wakes up) but sometimes not.  I'm using it as a TM backup so when TM wants to do a backup it will not start up.  I have to manually turn off the drive and then back on.  I orginally had a Macally FW800 enclosure and no issues so must be either the enclosure or something with the Mac.

  • External Hard driver not recognized after force eject while Mac was asleep

So my Samsung hard driver had force ejected itself when my Macbook pro was asleep, it cant be recognized anymore. It doesn't show up under utilities, however it does show up under System report.
I've tried to plug it onto my desktop, however the system had failed to install the software to run the hard drive, yet again it does show up under properties.
    Help please???!!!

No.  It may just require a 00 Phillips driver depending upon the enclosure.  Do the swap on a towel so that the little screws don't bounce away from you.  You will have to pull the HDD out from the connecting plug.  Do it in a straight line, don't bend it, and you may have to slowly increase pressure to get it out of the connecting plug.
    It's not rocket science.
    Ciao.

On OS X the drive stays mounted / connected,
    it's just that Windows-side of things . ):
The Drive is formatted as NTFS,

Are you using NTFS driver in Mac OS X to WRITE to your MyBook?
If so, switch to Paragon Software's. Demo is fine.
MyBooks are often trouble, though usually under OS X.
In Windows, do chkdsk on it.

  • External HDD keeps dropping out (without ejecting itself) ~ due to 1 bad partition

    Hi,
As stated above, my faithful WD 1TB MyPassport HDD keeps dropping out by itself, ie. icon disappears from my desktop and I get left with a 'eject before disconnect...' message.
At first it would appear to be a cable/USB/corrupt disk issue, BUT..........this is only happening since I tried to delete a partition using DiskUtility, (I have 2 partitions, I'll refer to the one I was trying to delete 'Partition1'), halfway through this  my Mac froze. I'm using a macbookpro[Alu][intel][OSX10.8.4] and an iMac[10.8.4 again].
    Symptoms....
    1. On reset I found that Partition1 showed up in gray in DiskUtility, but not on the desktop.
    2. Partition2 shows up fine, on desktop and in DiskUtility.
    3. After a minute or so both partitions dissappear and I get my familiar 'you should have ejected' message.
All I want to do now is repair the permissions, verify the disk or delete Partition1...but because the drive keeps disappearing I'm a bit stuck. If I can just get the data from Partition2 before it all drops out then I can cope with binning the rest of the drive.
    I've tried....
    1. different equipment [cables, different macs (macbook and iMac), hubs and USB ports]
    2. using DiskArbitrator to allow the drive to stay connected
    3. using KeepDriveSpinning for the same reason
    4. smashing my head against a brick wall
    Please help....
    Thanks in advance,
    Grant

It certainly may be. I do not trust Western digital external drives. I've have several of them fail and it was not the physical drive that failed it was the enclosure electronics. Once I removed the physical drive from the WD enclosure and connect it with a IDE/SATA to USB adapter the actual drives were fine and I'm still using all of them.
It also might be your Mac as these WD Passport drives are USB powered and Mac's are notorious for not putting out enough power on the USB ports to complete power up some of these type drives. There are numerous thread on how a warning will come up thjat the USB port has been disabled because something it drawing to much power from it. And that is with nothing at all connected to any of the USB ports.
Only way to test it to take the drive out of the WD enclosure and use one of those IDE/SATA to USB adapters and see if the same thing happens.

  • HT1229 How do you transfer photos to external backup and keep the photos in events with event name or with description name. Each time I have tried to transfer them they only transfer with a jpg number so you don't know what photos are what.

How do you transfer photos to external backup and keep the photos in events with event name or with description name. Each time I have tried to transfer them they only transfer with a jpg number so you don't know what photos are what. When you have several thousand photos it is difficult to determined what is what.
Why does iPhoto have the ability to put photos in events and to give them descriptions if it doesn't transfer this info with the photo. I want to back my photos up to an external drive.

The simplest way to achieve what you want is to back up the iPhoto Library. That will get everything.
You sem to be exporting from iPhoto to the Finder. The Finder does not have the same organisation capabilities as iPhoto. If you're going to do that you need to understand some of the differences between the two.
Event Name will become  Folder Name.
'Description Name' I guess is the Title you give the Photo
Jpeg Number is the File Name assigned by your camera.
    So: File -> Export
    Set your Kind to Jpeg
    Select your preferred Quality
Check the Boxes at 'Titles and Descriptions' and Location Information
    Under FIlename select 'Use Title'
Click on Export. In the Next Window choose a New Folder as your export destination and then Name that as you prefer

  • Hello. I keep my IPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled). Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Howtoresolve?

Hello. I keep my iPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) and both check out when scanned with Disk Utility. Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Any ideas how to  resolve? Also, what's the maximum recommended size for an iPhoto library file? Thx!

Since you can't drag the library to the other EHD for the backup see if you can duplicate it (if you have enough room on the drive) by selecting it and typing Command+d (duplicate).
If you do rebuild the library without a backup and it goes awry you won't lose your photos but you may lose your orgnaizational efforts. So try the following:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library in the location of your choosing  based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
NOTE:  Fix 2 above might be the method you might want to try first with iPLM creating the new library on your second EHD. If it works that would get your backup copy on the second EHD at the same time as repairing it. If it does'nt work then go back to Fix 1.

  • External Networked HDD iTunes Server Question

    Hello,
I have a pc laptop and an Apple TV. I am considering buying an external, network, HDD with iTunes Server. My hope is that I will be able to leave my laptop at work and stream music from the HDD w/iTunes Server to my Apple TV. Is this possible?
         Thank you.
    BB

No, you don't have to change the location of the library every time. I do exactly what you do all the time.
Like you, I also keep my music and videos on external drives. I frequently have iTunes running when the drives are not connected to my MBP and when I get home and connect the drives iTunes sees all my music and videos, no problem. iTunes is smarter than you think.
Now, if you are trying to connect the external drives while iTunes is running and expect the change to happen on the fly, no, this won't work. However all you have to do is quit iTunes, connect the drives, re-launch iTunes and it will find your music and videos.
Before you connect the drives quit iTunes. After you have connected the drives, launch iTunes and the app will find your music and videos.

  • Replacing external disk but keeping Time Machine history

Today I have a 500 GB USB3 HDD connected to the Mac and backed-up by Time Machine.
This HDD has less than 30GB free space and I have a replacement one (a bigger size and faster HDD).
I have copied the files from the old to the new USB3 HDD (using Finder as this is just pictures, videos, musique, docs, so nothing complicated that would require cloning).
To keep the history of modifications and deleted files from the old external HDD once I use exclusively the new external HDD, how shall I do that?
Having the same HDD name is enough?
    Thank you for your help

Having no answer, I took the decision to experiment.
I renamed the new external USB HDD with the same name as the older (soon to be replaced) ones and copied via Finder all the files on it (Aperture libraries, videos, documents).
By using Time Machine while on the new drive (not backing up, but just looking at older backups), I was able to see the previous versions of the external USB HDD files. So I thought that was that easy.
So I decided to manually trigger a new TM backup. However, it computed something like close to 500 GB to backup. Thus eventhough in terms of history for now I can trick TM to think it is the same HDD, when it comes to create a new backup, it simply wants to rebackup everything.
    Now I'm getting worried because:
    I don't know if the history will be kept after the backup has run;
Because it will push 500GB of data to the TM storage, it might fill it up and TM will start to remove older backup whereas this would have been unnecessary.
Note: I don't rely solely on TM for backup, I use Crashplan as well. So if I lose TM, it is "OK" as I could always restore something from Crashplan, but then for the oldest backup (for the last 2 years) I would only have one copy instead of 2... It is not that critical as I do not think I deleted something I would like to restore from that time period. But our of curiosity I would like to still found out how to properly change an external HDD that was backed-up by Time Machine without losing the history.

  • Booting from external usb3 drive

Hi, I am trying to boot Linux from an external USB3 drive.
    Here are the symptoms.
    1. I have uefi boot disabled.
    2. I connected a Toshiba USB3 drive to an USB2 port. The device is NOT recognized as a bootable device under Legacy Boot Devices list hence I cannot boot from the USB drive.
    3. If I boot from internal HDD, then I can access the USB3 drive without any problems.
    4. Plugged in an external USB3 Docking Device to the USB2 socket.
    5. Then the USB3 Docking Device is recognized as a Legacy Boot Device and I can boot from the Docking Device.
    6. Installed USB3 PCIe card.
    7. Connected the USB3 Docking Device to USB3 port.
    8. Now I the Docking Device fails to appear as a Legacy Boot Device.
    9. Connected the USB3 Docking Device back to the USB2 port and straight away it is now recognized as a Legacy Boot Device.
I would appreciate if any one can give some hints on how to get the USB3 devices recognized as legacy boot devices.
    Many thanks.

Help us to help you by posting the following information.
    1.  The full Model No. and Product No. of the desktop PC - see This HP web document if you don't how to locate the model number and\or product number.
Enter the BIOS after you have setup the bootable Linux hard disk as shown in the following video andenable usb 3.0 configuration in Pre-OS if it is available in the BIOS. That will enable you to use the USB 3.0 port to boot your usb3 external hard disk with Linux installed.
Which flavor of Linux? The video explains how to do this with Ubuntu.
