External Variable Library?

How do I have published Captivate project access and show items from an external folder, using variables? What I would like is to have a folder in which the user can replace my images, audio or movies with their own, and then have Captivate pull and show their image, audio or movie instead on slides in my published project. The user should not need to have Captivate or know how to program...but simply swap out my media with their own in a folder...that is located next to the published Captvate movie.

Think of Captivate as you would a Cake. With a Cake you mix several ingredients together and bake it. Therefore you cannot take the cake after it has been baked and substitute something else for the eggs or flour.
While Captivate does produce Flash output, it isn't Flash. As I understand it, what you are asking may be possible using Flash. So if you are Flash savvy, you might be able to create a Flash movie or possibly a Widget (If you are using Captivate 4) that would do it. Then use that inside your Captivate to achieve your goal.
You should also complete a Wish Form to ask the Captivate development team to consider adding this capability.

Illustrator CS5 crash when loading variable library

Hi,
I've recently upgraded to CS5 from CS3. I have some template files set up that read an XML variable library and load external images and text. These were working fine with CS3. With CS5, as soon as I load a variable and try to view any of my data sets, Illustrator crashes instantly. To be more specific, the XML seems to load fine, and I can drop down the menu to see all my dataset names, but as soon as I select one, it crashes. Any ideas on this?

1. Update OS to 10.6.4
2. Delete Illustrator Preferences
3. Restart machine

How can I add songs from my internal library to my external backup library without losing ratings and comments?

Hi, I have some 30.000 Songs in my constantly growing internal library and another 25k in my external backup library. I noticed that I lost all my ratings when fusing my libraries the last time.
As ratings and comments are essential for my work as a radio dj: How can I fuse libraries or add songs from my internal to my external library and keep ratings and comments and: How can I make sure, iTunes adds ratings and comments from songs I still have in my internal library to the same songs (without ratings and comments) in my external library? I use http://decimus.net/Synk to keep my iMac's iTunes synchronized with the backup iTunes folder on an external disk. Any changes I make are automatically synced to the backup. You might find it useful.

I am planning to consolidate one of my iTunes library, move it to external source and configure external hard drive to be used by my iTunes library permanently.
For this purpose, I bought 5big NAS pro network storage hardware. I completed all basic setup and now I need help on designing access methodology.
Question is : Does external iTunes library supports to be used by more than one iTunes application? if not what will be the closest solution to save storage and ease of library management?

Error while deploying project with external variables

Hi,
We are facing issue to deploy a project which contains external variables. In the process of publishing, we check true - Smart Publish. In the deployment process I get a screen where we define the Deployment Topology. On clicking Deploy button, the next screen we get an error which says:
Error(s) found while creating external variables for the following engines: <Engine_Name>: Login failed for the user '<DB User>'.
The DB User and the databases are created by the ALBPM Configuration wizard while configuring. We are able to login to SQL using the same userId and also can access the tables in the database. Also, we use the same DB userId for the Engine Databse too.
We are using ALBPM Enterrpise 5.7 MP3
WebLogic 9.2
SQL Server 2005
If anyone has resolved such issue earlier, we need your urgent help.

Hi,
When you initially ran the wizard to create the Engine tables you used a user and password that had been granted CREATE table authority for Sql Server.
When you publish and deploy a project with External Variables (project variables in 6.0), you are adding columns to one of the Engine's tables. When you get the error you're getting, this normally means that the database user you specified has not been granted ALTER privileges for the database tables.
This should be pretty easy for your DBA to check out and fix. Once they do the GRANT, do the publish and deploy once again.

Transferring external iTune library from one computer to another

I am having great difficulty in changing my external iTunes library from my old MBP laptop to my new iMac 5k.
My entire iTunes library is stored on an external drive and can be accessed directly with my MBP. When I started up iTunes on my new iMac, it created a new empty library in the MUSIC folder. What I want to do is connect my new iMac to the external library directly. I can see it when I turn on HOME SHARING but only when iTunes is running on my MBP, which is useless since my MBP will now be seldom used. I have of course on the iMac, changed the library location in the advanced preferences to the external location, to no avail. I do not want to keep any media files on the iMac for capacity reasons.
To compound the problem, I cannot seem to sync my new iPhone 6+ to the original external library, only the new empty one!
Surely this ought to be a simple job, transferring an external iTunes library from one computer to another! Am I missing something obvious here?

Wow, what a quick response! Thanks, Limnos. I guess it was bleeding' obvious, and I should have thought of it before. Such a simple solution!
On a related matter, I also have just realised that the iTunes iOS backups are saved on the internal computer drive in a folder called MOBILESYNC rather than on an external drive, thus chewing up a lot of capacity on my SSD. Others reading this response may be interested to know that it is easy to have iTunes save the iOS backups to any external drive using a symbolic link in this directory. Go to

Loading an External Variable

Hello all,
I am having a little difficulty loading an external variable
into my flash movie.
The principle of the movie is to load some XML data and
display expected data in loop. This all works fine and as it
should.
My problem starts when I remove the internal variable used
for testing and try and insert the same variable externally, as
this will be changing depending upon the teams displays. I have
tried adding in the variable like

and
<param name="movie"
value="flash/plasma.swf?teamName=teamA" />
And then tried using a variety of methods in AS3 to display
the name. Just getting it to trace "teamA" would be all I need, but
it is having none of it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Time Machine backup of external iPhoto library shows recent photos only as outline, no image. Any suggestions?

The Time Machine backup of my external iPhoto library shows all pictures 'now' but previous backups show the most recent pictures only as box outlines, some with a curled corner. How can I see all pictures to make sure TM has them? And if I would need to restore photos from TM can I do this one picture at a time or only the whole library? If I upgrade to iPhoto 11, a more recent OS, or both, do the answers to any of these questions change?

You can not use the iPhoto library while it is a TM backup - you must restore it to use it - and you must restore it all

SCM export as SCAP: Issue with external variables

SCM can export some of the baselines as SCAP v1.0 XML files (including CPE, OVAL and XCCDF).

Well, I went back into Best Buy to test on 3 other laptops (2 Asus, and their floor model for this Sony). It seems to be doing the same problem so at least I was able to rule out broken hardware issue on my particular laptop.
Here's what I did to test:
Since I couldn't really install Adobe Premiere on their machines, I used the DVIO software (http://www.carr-engineering.com/dvio.htm) and a 5 min clip I captured. I transferred onto their machines, hooked up my Sony D8, and attempted to play the video. It would play for 15 seconds and then stop and jitter with a loud noise (like it does on my laptop). I even tried changing each machine's firewire driver to the legacy one and same results. I pulled a brand new 4 pin to 4 pin firewire cable off their shelf and still the same problem.
I think I've nailed it down to Win7x64 bit Home Edition not playing nice with Firewire driver. Very annoying. I can't find any concrete evidence of this from other users on any of the forums that have my particular problem, but from my own testing, it's all I can conclude.
I have 2 other things I can try:
1. Opening the laptop and looking at the firewire to maybe find appropriate driver (ugh, I don't want to have to open this thing up).
2. Upgrading to Win7x64bit Pro and possibly testing with XP on the new MS Virtual PC (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/). I can't do it with my Home edition apparantly.
Who needs to view video on an external TV anyways....sheeesh...(scarcasm).

Using external Variables between proxies in OSB

Im trying to figure out if it is possible, to store some kind of message (could be payload, XML, or just a string) to an external variable so it could be reused among different proxies. Anyone knows if this is possible, and if yes, how can it be implemented? I have seen in "The Definitive Guide to SOA: Oracle Service Bus, Second Edition" an approach with xquery, but im not sure if that is helpful: +"OSB has the ability to store XQuery, WSDL, XML Schema, XSLT, WS-Policy files, and more as reusable resources. The ability to store these resources (sometimes referred to as assets or artifacts) along with proxy services makes OSB a lightweight service repository. As I said in my previous post, my case is this: I would like to be able, to have a common variable that I would be able to assign inside one proxy, and used from another proxy. I don't know if it can be implemented. Calling from one proxy to another in order to pass the variable is not my case. One scenario is that one proxy will be able to save in runtime a value in an external variable and another proxy would be able to use it. By saying :+"You can definitely reuse them without any problem, but you can hardly put any value into them from proxy service (in runtime)."+ you mean that I can have an external variable pre-assigned, but I will not be able to update in runtime? Is this 100% sure?

Illustrator - Maximum allowed size of variable library xml file loaded from variables palette?

One question I can’t seem to find the answer to anywhere – any idea on what the maximum size xml file one can use when making data driven graphics in Illustrator?
I can successfully batch when I load a single variable library with about 100 datasets at one time but anything much larger than that in the same xml format gives me a “the incoming variable library is invalid” error. Elsewhere on this discussion forum I have seen answers say there is no limit to the size of the XML file. (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/647934). But my experience with Illustrator CS5 says otherwise.
I have thousands I need to create. Any help would be most appreciated.
1. If there is a maximum size either in file size, number of datasets, or number of variables/values, please share what the limit is.
2. I still need to create thousands of the final document I am creating - if the limit is close to 100 and I need to create many thousands - any suggestions on either scripting or other methods to get this done?

yey!! now we know 1,000 is not the limit. Tested wiht 2 variables, 1122 data sets.

BackingUp External iTunes Library?

To allocate more space on the my local drive I migrated my iTunes library to and external firewire drive. My question is HOW can I back-up the external iTunes library using TM to another 3TB drive dedicated for backups? Or is not possible and I have to use 3rd party backup application?

I've tried that and option, but TM does not back it up So I've been using a folder sync option, but I would rather have TM manage the back-up. Let me try posting this on the TM forum.

How do I import a localized variable library?

Hi all,
I am setting up illustrations for localization and am running into a problem with loading a modified variable library; for instance, one that has been translated. I getting the message "The incoming variable library is invalid".
I can't seem to find any information on what to do after:
-linking and adding variables and objects in the Variables panel
-taking a snapshot
-saving the variables library file
-copying and translating the variables library file

I know this is an old thread but i had this problem and a Google search brought me here. Carlos, had a post in another thread, that let me FINALLY get my variables to work. In case anyone else searches for the same problem, this might help.
My problem was same as OP: creating an xml in excel and loading into illustrator variables window, i got this error message "The Incoming Variable Library is Invalid"
Pulled my hair out for a weekend and finally saw the thread i linked in the first paragraph and realized that illustrator just doesn't work well with excel xml files. So here's what i did (note: when i say Excel, it can be any excel-type program i believe):
1) In Excel, Row 1, create headers for the columns as 1-word headings ("phonenumber" instead of "phone number"). These are going to be your Variables and need to be unique.
2) In Excel, make sure your first column is full of unique data, these will become your Data Sets. I originally had "Color" set as the first column and there were several "Blue" rows so that kept giving me errors, (if you aren't sure, you can use the conditional formatting button to highlight the duplicate values in excel).
3) Ok, fun part, highlight all the cells copy them (ctrl+C, cmd+c, or right click>Copy)
4) Open this link that Carlos provided in the thread i linked at the top: Conversor Excel(CSV) – XML Illustrator the page is in portugese but you don't need to read it so don't worry if you can't speak portugese.
5) Paste (ctrl+v, cmd+v, right click>paste) the cells you copied from excel into the top box.
6) Highlight the text in the bottom box, copy it, and paste it into Notepad, TextEdit, or whatever your favorite text editor is.
7) Save the file as xml (in notepad you just type .xml at the end of the file name.
8) In Illustrator, click the arrow in the variable window, then click "Load Variable Library"
9) The variables should now show up in the list.
Yay! Now you should be able to work with variables and data sets.

Illustrator Variable Library Issue

I have a file with 20 text fields I want to be dynamic. I gave my text boxes names using a name_name scheme and created text variables with the same names and binded them. I was then able to capture and name the first data set with no problems. I saved out the variable library and when I tried to load it back in I get a invalid variable library. I didn't open or change the .xml in any way. My question is are there limitations on variable names or characters contained within and if so what is not allowed. My variables contain accented characters and characters of different languages.

I don't use accented characters or other languages in the variable names just their content. I found the problem and it was the line breaks that were imported using the capture dataset control. When I turned on show invisibles in my text editor i saw diamond shape line breaks in my content. I replaced these with a to close the first line and start a new one and everthing showed up correctly and the library was now loadable.
