External XML as MenuBar dataProvider

Here the function called by application apps.mxml at
initialization:-
private function PopulateMenu ():void {
request = new URLRequest('menusrc.xml');
loader = new URLLoader();
loader.load(request);
menuLine.labelField = "@label";
menuLine.iconField = "@Icon";
menuLine.dataProvider = (new XML(loader.data));
apps.mxml:-
<mx:MenuBar height="100%" id="menuLine"
showRoot="false"/>
menusrc.xml:-
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<menu>
<menuitem label="File">
<menuitem label="Open"
Icon="@Embed(source='images/menu/create.jpg')"/>
<menuitem label="Delete"/>
<menuitem label="Update"/>
</menuitem>
<!--Tree View-->
<menuitem label="File">
<menuitem label="Setting"/>
</menuitem>
</menu>
The avobe is fails to populate my menu.

  • How do you load external XML into a dataProvider?

    I have been looking through the docs and have found a couple
    of entries discussing how to load external XML. Unfortunately, that
    is where the example stops and there is no example of doing
    anything useful with that data.
    I have managed thus far to get my XML file loaded into
    actionscript/flex:
    function getExternalXML():void {
    request = new URLRequest('source.xml');
    loader = new URLLoader();
    loader.load(request);
    loader.addEventListener("complete", loadXML);
    function loadXML(e:Event):void {
    combo.dataProvider = loader.data;
    obviously, the above doesn't work at all. I don't know how to
    convert the loader.data into a format that the
    ComboBox.dataProvider understands. I can't believe I have to write
    a function to parse this XML. Surely there must be a way to simply
    convert the XML to an array or something???

    That link uses the flex beta 3 docs. You may want to use the
    current livedocs.
    Here
    is a direct link to the section I was talking about.
    Scroll down about halfway to the part that says "However,
    using a raw data object..."
    If you want the PDFs (easier to read IMO) you can get them
    here.
    Here
    is a direct link to the Developer's Guide:

  • Menubar dataprovider in Flex2 Beta 3

    am using following code:-
    <mx:MenuBar height="100%" labelField="@label"
    showRoot="true" iconField="Icon" >
    <mx:XMLList>
    <menuitem label="AWB">
    <menuitem label="New AWB"
    Icon="@Embed(source='images/menu/create.jpg')"/>
    </menuitem>
    </mx:XMLList>
    </mx:MenuBar>
    I hv 2 qtn:-
    1) how can i populate menubar(tried but failed) from an XML
    file as in flex 1.5.
    eg:-
    dataprovider="xmlsource" where xmlsource is the id for xml
    file.
    2) how can i show menuicons . in simple coding(as above)
    .And when using external xml source as dataprovider for
    menubar.
    early response appreciated!
    thanks in advance!

    Hello -
    1.) Similar to Flex 1.5, you need to set the dataProvider
    property to point to your XML. However, now this is an e4x xml
    object (e4x support is new in Flex 2, Flash Player 9). So, you need
    to set a labelField on your MenuBar to instruct the MenuBar to look
    for attributes named 'label' and use those as the field to pull out
    labels for display.
    So: <mx:MenuBar id="mb" dataProvider="{xmlsource}"
    labelField="@label" />
    Remember, this XML needs to be well-formed XML. Also, you can
    use the showRoot property to toggle whether or not the root node of
    the dataProvider is shown. By default I believe it is true, though
    I may be wrong on that.
    2.) To show icons, you need to set an iconField on the
    MenuBar to instruct it which field in the dataProvider it needs to
    use as the icon reference. So, in your example below, you need to
    do something like:
    <mx:MenuBar id="mb" dataProvider="{xmlsource}"
    labelField="@label" iconField="Icon"/>

  • Populating Tree with External XML File

    I want to use external files for populating Flex 3
    components. I have been successful using code very similar to that
    below for a data grid & for a combo box, but it won't work for
    a tree. Can you determine wh?
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <mx:WindowedApplication xmlns:mx="
    http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
    layout="absolute">
    <mx:HTTPService id="dp_Tree1" url="Tree1.xml" />
    <mx:Tree dataProvider="{dp_Tree1.lastResult.root.node}"
    creationComplete="dp_Tree1.send()" width="333"/>
    </mx:WindowedApplication>
    It's not working & I can't determine why. Attached is my
    xml file that I tested it with.

    Thanks a bunch folks, but my intent is to have as little code
    as possible. I want to help people who are not coders create
    designs using external xml files to populate controls. I was able
    to create very simple code with just two lines to populate a
    DataGrid from an external xml file:
    <mx:HTTPService id="dp_DataGrid1" url="DataGrid1.xml"
    />
    <mx:DataGrid
    dataProvider="{dp_DataGrid1.lastResult.component.rows}"
    creationComplete="dp_DataGrid1.send()" />
    And just two lines for a ComboBox:
    <mx:HTTPService id="dp_ComboBox1" url="ComboBox1.xml"
    />
    <mx:ComboBox
    dataProvider="{dp_ComboBox1.lastResult.component.rows}"
    creationComplete="dp_ComboBox1.send()" />
    Isn't it possible to populate a tree with two lines like as
    it is with a DataGrid & ComboBox?

  • XMLList to External XML File

    Hi All,
    I'm new to Flex, but I've been impressed with it so far. I
    was able to create a simple app, where things like navigation trees
    and table data were populated based on XML stored inside mx:XMLList
    tags inside the main document. In order to clean things up, I
    thought I'd move the data into external XML files. I copied the
    data out to the files, and verified the data always had a single
    top-level node. I then noted that mx:XMLList doesn't support the
    'source' attribute, so converted to using mx:XML tags inside the
    application mxml. The application now compiles, but entirety of the
    XML hierarchy displays as a single node, instead of being parsed
    into tree nodes. Any idea what I'm missing here? And thanks in
    advance for going easy on the noob. ;-)
    - Josh

    Spoke too soon. Looks like that top node thing is right, as
    it's only passing in the first node from each xml datasource. It
    must've been doing that before, but since the top-node didn't have
    a label, it displayed all the children as the label.
    So by adding the top-level node to the XML, my guess is that
    when I call my data from the dataProvider, I'll have to add
    something to bypass this extra layer of hierarchy, right?
    Currently my app code has:
    <mx:XML id="deviceTree" source="deviceTree.xml" />
    <snip/>
    <mx:Tree dataProvider="{deviceTree}" />
    and my XML (deviceTree.xml) with the new added top node is
    now:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <devices>
    <node label="Foo">
    <node label="Foo1" />
    <node label="Foo2" />
    </node>
    <node label="Bar">
    <node label="Bar1" />
    <node label="Bar2" />
    </node>
    </devices>
    I tried changing the dataProvider to {deviceTree.devices} but
    to no avail. Can someone throw me a line?

  • Load external XML into DataGrid with AS3

    I've really looked hard to find an example/tutorial for
    loading external XML data into a DataGrid component using AS3. The
    code I'm using at the moment has the XML data in the AS code. If
    anyone can point me to a good resource(s) for code or a tutorial
    I'd be very appreciative. It needs to be AS3. ~steve
    Here is the code that is working for internal XML data:
    import fl.controls.dataGridClasses.DataGridColumn;
    import fl.data.DataProvider;
    stop();
    var emailXML:XML = <emails>
    <email date="06-04-07" code="EMRPAAV" campaign="This is
    the campaign details."/>
    <email date="06-11-07" code="EMRPAAW" campaign="This is
    the campaign details."/>
    <email date="06-18-07" code="EMRPAAX" campaign="This is

    the campaign details."/>
    <email date="07-09-07" code="EMRPABA" campaign="This is

    </emails>;
    var dateCol:DataGridColumn = new DataGridColumn("date");
    dateCol.headerText = "Date";

    emailData.width = 440;
    emailData.dataProvider = myDP;
    emailData.rowCount = emailData.length;

    parseXML();
    function loadXML(evt:Event):void

  • How to reflect data changes back to the external XML

    Hi,
    In one of my application,
    I use data for (any of) my Flex component from an external XML (thru a HTTPService) request & a Java backend function provides the XML data.
    I bind the HTTPService result to XMLListCollection & I supply this data for the dataprovider for my component.
    So, if I make any data changes (by adding / creating new items ) in the component, it will be reflected in the XMLListCollection (resulting in adding / modifying new nodes)
    My Question is how to make these data changes reflect back in the external XML?
    - Sen

    Well not necessarily. While binding directly to the service in view is fast is
    also not very clean and reusable. Try to put your data inside model classes,
    view binds to those classes instead of the service. Also use a custom class to
    wrap your service and that gives you flexibility to change server properties or
    make 2 different calls with the same service. You need to write code yourself
    but in the end it will be easier to adjust changes. So when you load data you
    actually populate the model instead of bringing data straight to the view. This
    code usually gets executed inside a command class. So to be more specific:
    CustomService
    - var HTTPService
    function getData
    -- in here you have the service calling the get data method on the service
    function setData
    -- in here you have the service calling the save data on the server
    View
    var model:DataModel
    - controls binds to the model and display data from model
    - when click on save or whatever gesture you use for saving you dispatch an
    event with the new data.
    You  should use some MVC framework to do this for you..
    When event is dispatched the framework will create a command class instance and
    run it ...
    GetSaveCommand
    - var service:CustomService
    service.saveData(event.Data)
    service.getData()
    function result()
    function fault() - for the success or fault of the service call ...
    you can perform additional data transformation here id needed or employ the use
    of other class to do that if necessary ...
    Hope this makes sense. It is more work involved as you can see.
    Or you can go with 2 HTTPService instance in the view ...

    What are the requirements and steps for arranging to receive this large file using File Transfer Protocol (FTP)?
    Usually, we don't speak of "receive" when using FTP, since the file is transferred from server to client, so it's more of a case of "download".
    At your end, it's simple. You use an FTP client; under SL, that includes Finder and Safari, so you don't even need to get any additional software.
    At the other end, it's more complicated; the 'sender' must set up an FTP server on his machine.
    Alternatively, you can set up your own Mac as an FTP server, and have the 'sender' connect to you with an FTP client and upload the file; but, if your Mac lives behind a router, then you have more work to do with the router settings.
    That's why it's much easier to use the file sharing services mentioned above -- if they are available in both sender's and receiver's locations. (Keep in mind that some countries block access to all those mentioned -- except perhaps <www.transfer.ro>, of which I know absolutely nothing.)

  • Variable substitution in external XML

    I'm loading an external xml file using the Loader class, and
    then assigning the loaded content to a variable when the loading is
    complete, like this:
    function x_loaded(e:Event) {
    var rotation_value:String = "-180";
    mc_xml = XML(x_loader.data);
    If I include in my xml file a value to be substituted, for
    example <image rotation={rotation_value}/>, the parsing of
    the xml fails when assigning to the mc_xml value.
    Is it possible to substitute values in externally loaded xml?
    alternatively, is there a way to simply SET the values,
    something like image.attribute("rotation")="180";
    thanks in advance

    Thanks, k
    I think all the code that's germane is in my first post, but
    here's a bit more detail. It turns out I was using URLLoader, sorry
    to confuse the issue. Your help is appreciated. The failure occurs
    on the line that reads "mc_xml = XML(x_loader.data);" and the error
    message is: "TypeError: Error #1090: XML parser failure: element is
    malformed."
    my code:
    var mc_xml:XML;
    var x_loader:URLLoader = new URLLoader();
    var x_url:String = "motion.xml";
    var x_req:URLRequest = new URLRequest(x_url);
    x_loader.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,x_loaded);
    x_loader.load(x_req);
    function x_loaded(e:Event) {
    var rotation_value:String = "-180";
    mc_xml = XML(x_loader.data);
    Here's the (simplified) external xml file. It's generated by
    a "Copy motion as ActionScript 3.0" and everything works fine
    before I try to substitute some variables in the xml. You can see
    the substitution in the penultimate line.
    <Motion duration="20" xmlns="fl.motion.*"
    xmlns:geom="flash.geom.*" xmlns:filters="flash.filters.*">
    <source>
    <Source frameRate="25" x="784.3" y="78.1" scaleX="1"
    scaleY="1" rotation="180" elementType="movie clip"
    instanceName="mc" symbolName="Symbol 2">
    <dimensions>
    <geom:Rectangle left="0" top="0" width="288"
    height="209"/>
    </dimensions>
    <transformationPoint>
    <geom:Point x="0.2586805555555556"
    y="0.3923444976076555"/>
    </transformationPoint>
    </Source>
    </source>
    <Keyframe index="0">
    <tweens>
    <SimpleEase ease="0"/>
    </tweens>
    </Keyframe>
    <Keyframe index="19" x="-709.8" y="3.9000000000000057"
    rotation={rotation_value} />
    </Motion>
    Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide

  • Import external xml file in PDF using Livecycle

    I require sending some values in main xml file from the external xml file during sending mail on button click. Doing so, I want to read values from external file into a hidden field or send the external xml/text file as an attachment.
    1. Is there any feature in live cycle to attach multiple xml/text files in mail using button click?
    2. Is there any way to read an external xml file to pre-populate a textbox using javascript?
    Kindly help me to find out the solution.
    Thanks in advance
    Vikram Kumar

    Hi,
    1) You can do this with a script. But this script works only with the Acrobat Pro not with the Adobe Reader!!
    2) Sure.
    You open your form.
    Go to File | Form Properties |  Preview | then choose your xml-file
    Then you have to got to the textobject | mark this | go to "Object" | "Binding"
    Here you can bind the field: $record.PRINTJOB.PMSDATA.ObjectNameXML (You have to adapt this in the path in your XML to the field in the XML)
    If you make a preview you will see the value of the XML in your textfield.
    You can also script the databinding. You have to go to the initalize.event and write:
    this.rawValue = xfa.record.PathToYourFieldInYourXML.ObjectNameXML.value;
    Hope it will helps you,
    Mandy

  • Using external XML document to update / change text fields inside of published captivate output.

    Hello
    I currently have a project where the client has requested to have the ability to update the text fields inside the project at a later date.
    This is due to the nature of the content changing rather rapidly, i would like to set this up so the client can manage this them selfs.
    What would the best way to do this be?
    I'm thinking XML, an external XML sheet were by Captivate imports the text from this XML sheet and then displays it within the specific text fields contained within the captivate output.
    This way the client would just update the external XML document(cut and paste the text in) and then the text would be dynamically updated in the published Captivate document.
    any help would be amazing !
    Thanks in advance
    Nick

    Hi Lieve
    But isn't this thread more about an end user having an ability to change text after the Captivate has been published and delivered? I could see where that might be useful if making changes then publishing to create a new output. But I'm interpreting that the situation here is that a Captivate project has been published and delivered, and some mechanism is desired that allows the recipient to modify an external XML file to influence changes in the already compiled Captivate output.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Read external XML stream into a field

    Hello all -
    I have been trying to get this working for a week now and still no luck. It seems like it's possible to find field values to external XML file, but Acrobat tries to parse the XML and be smart about it.
    I have a custom form logic that needs to read an XML file from a URL and assign the stream to a form field that can later be accessed via FormField.rawValue.
    The XML is rather basic - something like
    1
    2
    3
    4
    I tried the xfa.connectionSet to no avail. I am now trying to bring in that value with SOAP, but have been reading that it might give prompts in Reader.
    Can I simply read an external URL and assign the server response to a variable or a field ?
    My apologies for the super-basic question!!
    Thanks in advance!
    Frank
