Externally edited image not stored with referenced files?

When I open an image in the external editor, do my work in PS, and then save, the new file is located in the Aperture Library even though the master for the image is a referenced file. Is there any way to change this so the new images will be placed in the same folder as the referenced images? Thanks...gary

I'm afraid for the moment you have to do it manually by selecting the image and going to File/Relocate Master.
We should have and option in Aperture to allow us to have ALL the images in an external location.

  • File opened in external editor not stored with referenced files

If I open a referenced raw file in an external editor (CS2) and work on the image adding layers etc., the image is not stored where I have all the other referenced files. It gets stored in the Aperture Library. Is there a way around this. I want to keep all my files together. This can be done in Lightroom, but I am trying to make Aperture work for my workflow.
    Thanks,

Well, here's the feedback I submitted to Apple:
With the introduction of Aperture 1.5, you offered users the ability to manage their own libraries, and for Aperture to work with 'referenced' images. In fact, because of this very reason, many of us consumers decided to buy Aperture 1.5.
Most of us photographers also use Adobe Photoshop routinely.
But there is a huge problem/bug for us users who manage our own library (force Aperture to work with 'referenced' images) AND use Photoshop (or any external editor for that matter). When we open a file in an external editor via Aperture, Aperture creates a new 'master' for editing -- but does so in its own 'managed' library! When we save from Photoshop, the image remains in the 'managed' library! So now we have one 'master' in our own directory, and the externally-edited 'master' in Aperture's 'managed' library! This is very CONFUSING and renders external editing via Aperture USELESS... no one in their right mind would want one version of their image in an organized directory, and an edited version in Aperture's managed library (where it is difficult to find manually)! No, it makes much more sense to create the edited 'master' in the same location as the original 'master'!
PLEASE fix this bug ASAP! Aperture already has a good method for automatically renaming files by adding (1) or (2) or (3) or so forth when it is relocating files and finds a file with the same file-name. The same logic can be applied when creating a new 'master' for external-editing: that is, it should just create another .tiff (or .psd, or what have you) file with the same name but with a (1) or (2) tagged on. For example, if my master image is \Pictures\Seattle\SpaceNeedle.tiff, then when I open this image in an external editor, Aperture should automatically make the file: \Pictures\Seattle\SpaceNeedle (1).tiff, and open that file in the external editor... rather than create SpaceNeedle.tiff in its own managed library where I can't even find it using Finder or Windows Explorer, etc.
Many of us have this complaint (just search Apple discussions)... PLEASE rectify this problem ASAP as it is completely messing up our workflows by requiring us to manually save through the external editor and then having to manually remove every 'managed' file that Aperture makes. This is really a pain and seriously makes me want to switch to a different image management program... though I love Aperture thus far and would love to stick to it as I believe it is visionary and shaping the future of how photographers will manage their digital workflows!
Many thanks in advance for your time!
    Best,
    Rishi

  • Can I use iPhoto to view and edit images not stored in the iPhoto Library

    Hi folks,
I'm a newbie to Mac after 20+ years on PC...just switched 2 weeks ago....wish I'd done it years ago. Everythings so easy and fast...e.g. setup wireless broadband in 25 mins with no probs....and I have never done anything like that.
    Here's my Q.
I have a load of images, downloads and scans, of old manuscripts, authors etc. which I don't really want in my iPhoto library (which I would like to keep for actual photos. Is it possible to point iPhoto to another location (say in Documents) where it will let me view and edit these images without importing them into the library.
Alternatively can I view images as thumbnails in this other locations, and not as default file type icons.
    Hope this is plain,
    JP_MAC
    Imac G5 17" 1.9Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi jp-mac,
iPhoto 5 imports all images into it's own database. (this has changed with iPhoto 6 so you might want to check out iLife 6)
The other files you want to view but not have in the library...are they image files?
If so, you can view that folder as icons and then make the icons larger so you can see what they are.
To do this open the folder in question. click the first icon on top of View in the toolbar. This will make that folder contents view as icons
Now go all the way to the top of your screen and click on View>show view options.
Slide the icon size slider all the way to the right to view them larger. Also make sure you have the "show icon preview" checked.
This will work most of the time, but sometimes if you edit images in other applications they might not make icon previews, so check their preferences to make sure you have that checked.
There is also a little third party program that will do it for you.
    One is called Pic2Icon
    Pic2Icon
Another one is a contextual menu item called QuickImageCM.
    QuickImageCM
check out that page because there are some other useful contextual menu items that I use all the time.

  • Likely bug with external editing (in CS5 not CS6 beta) and edited image not showing back up in LR

I have come across something strange today that I've not seen before. I'm running LR 4.0 under Win7 64-bit. I usually use Photoshop CS6 beta as my external editor, but invoke CS5 when I have to use some tools that don't support the beta. Here is the scenario:
    * I have CS5 open
    * I externally edit an image in CS5 and Save it from CS5 when I'm done
    * The edited image does not show up in LR
    * I close LR and reopen it
    * There is the edited image!
I have duplicated this many times this evening. I don't think I've seen it when I've used CS6 beta.

Something strange is going on because I had the behavior reported of edited image not showing up after using another filter, Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.

You cannot; it's intentionally disabled to guard against accidental file loss. If you press Option when pasting the files, they'll be moved instead of copied.

  • In Aperture 3.4.1, I am not able to connect with referenced files on a network

I am running OS X 10.8.2 and Aperture 3.4.1, and am unable to connect with referenced files on a network.  Specifically, the referenced files reside on my iMac and I am attempting to connect to them from my MBP.  They appear in red in the dialogue box.  While I know this has been a long standing issue in other versions, I was hoping it had been solved by now.  Any assistance will be appreciated.

  • Help with referenced files and importing

This might be more complex than can be addressed here, but I'm struggling with the organization of aperture.
Because I'm not sure I want use aperture forever, and because I occasionally like to use other photo editors, I've opted for a referenced file setup. I typically arrange my pictures into year/month sub folders, with additional folders for special subjects, like my kids. I've been doing this for a long time, it works for me, and I don't want to change.
Problem #1 - avoiding duplicates when I import. When I stick the card in my computer I want to copy just the new files to the directory I specify. Image capture only looks for duplicates in the target directory, which is no help if I'm importing files to "November" from a card that has files that were previously imported to "October." The easiest solution would be to delete the images off of the card after importing, but I can't do that - my wife also wants to copy the pix to her computer and she may not copy for several weeks or months at a time.
I tried using aperture's import feature to copy files directly from my camera's memory card. The import worked, but when I tried to locate the files on disk, aperture told me there were no referenced files. Any idea where they are?
Problem #2 - import. Is there any way to make Aperture watch referenced directories and automatically add new files to the the appropriate project? It's a pain to keep manually importing files.
Problem #3 - Organization. Is there any way to set up aperture so that a project = a physical folder on my drive? I get that Aperture is trying to abstract the physical location of my files, but I don't want them abstracted. Also, why is my aperture primary library 6.2 GB when I do all my work with referenced files? Where are my edited files stored? Are these in the primary library? Where are the files from my photostreams (from my phone) stored?
Would any or all of these issues be resolved by moving to a managed file set up?
Finally, if I can't get Aperture working the way I need it, any insight into how I'd use it as an external editor to something like Picasa? I really like the aperture editing tools - that's why I bought it. But the workflow is just killing me.
Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks.

It is not as complex as you are making it.  Aperture is not per se an editor.  It is for storing and organizing, and quickly decoding RAW images.  It is a pretty good editor, but it has the feature to allow you to specify an External Editor to which you can send images for more complex editing, and back -- all from within Aperture.
You don't want to have your images referenced so you can also edit them with other programs.  That destroys the non destructive design of Aperture.  If you want Referenced images, you mostly want them so they can be on a different hard drive from that used by the Library for keeping track and storing the adjustments, and not so other programs can access them.
You need to read further as to how and why Aperture works the way it does.

  • Has anyone not working with .dv files had synchronization problems?

Has anyone not working with .dv files had sound synchronization problems? I'm not exactly sure what the alternatives to DV are, but I think one of them is HD.
The reason for asking this question is to help isolate the nature and cause of a very serious flaw in iMovie '11. In the original release of iMovie '11 (version 9.0) there was a small--but serious--synchronization problem. In the 9.01 there is a large synchronization problem. We know of one person who has not experienced the problem, and he is not working with DV files (media). So we want to find out if anyone who is using something other than .dv files is experiencing a lack of synchronization between sound and picture. Knowing the answer to this will help with figuring out where the cause lies. For the initial iMovie '11 release (9.0), you probably would not notice a problem unless you had very long event-clips, e.g., two hours long. Events get this long if you are transferring from analog 8 mm tapes. Even then, it would have to be in scenes in which the connection between event and sound is obvious, e.g., close ups of people talking. It isn't until the 9.01 release that most people would notice anything. All we need to do is establish one case of a synchronization problem in which the person is using something other than DV.

Hopefully, the 9.0.2 release will make my question moot. Zyfert must have posted the announcement of the release just as I was formulating my question. Still, if you have information on the subject, it would be interesting to hear.

  • The vendor account is not associated with the file you are trying to open. Please try again.

Please help me to understand what is the problem with the set up of the program. I bought an ebook from an internet site to which my IP address was blocked (in country 1). My brother bought it on a computer in country 2  and wanted to download and send me the file so I can open it on my computer. He set up initial download without Adobe ID. Afterwards he downloaded the pdf and send it to me. I tried to upload it  with my ADE reader but it didn't work without ID. My brother then deleted afterwards his ADE and installed it again, downloaded the ebook again but this time setting up an ID. He transferred me the file ,I used the same ID  but then the following message appeared "The vendor account is not associated with the file you are trying to open. Please try again." . Can this be fixed somehow? I cannot open the URLLinks even as there is no connection from my IP , but I have the pdf file ( ebook) but I don't know how to set up the program.

Sorry Everyone this error message appeared in Digital Editions 4 used on a windows 8 laptop.  Thanks Chris

  • Moving images not stored in Aperture Library to Aperture Library

I have some images not stored in my Aperture Library that I would like to have stored in my Aperture Library without having to reimport. I have already made adjustments to them. I just realized that when I imported them I did not have the setting to put them in my Aperture Library selected.
    What a day... : (
    Thanks all.

The albums organization remains the same, simply select the images in the browser and go to File-Consolidate Master. That moves (or copy) the master file to the Library. The links to albums are updated automatically.

a friend of mine has the same problem - also updated from LR3 to LR4, external editor: elements 10
Which process version is the image you're trying to edit externally?
You right-click (I'm assuming PC, can't help Macs), there should be a context menu option "Edit in".  You choose that, and there's an option for Elements 10 or not?
If so, what happens when you select it?  Do you get any further message?
If not, you may have to go to Edit menu, preferences, External Editing tab and create a preset for Elements.  In the "Additional External Editor" area, click "Choose" and navigate to wherever Elements is on your machine and you can create a new external editor.

I too have the same problem.  The audio drop out of sync in about 5 sec in not uncommon for the audio to be 30+ sec behind video.  Apple needs to fix this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   its a joke,  my iphone is all messed up after the last update as well.  at one time not to long ago apple products and software were top rated, not so much any more, more and more problems are showing up and apple is unwilling or unalbe to fix the many issues.  Apple needs to fix the audio sync problem, it not the computer hardware or other software it ITUNES!!!!,  there is no workaround other then hitting pause and hitting pause and hitting pause to temp fix the problem.
