Externals

What is the best external hard drive to hook a new macbook(black) up to Time Machine?
What is the best portable external hard drive for the new macbook (speed for size, biggest one without slowing the computer down)?
Thank you in advance,
JW

Are you asking for a brand? I am sorry I cannot help there, because I have always bought the hard drive and the FW enclosure separately. I have done this about a dozen times, for myself and for friends and family, and our choice has been based on price, not brand. My most recent purchase was a dual (FW and USB2) enclosure made by ULTRA, which cost less than $25.00. I got that at Tiger Direct.
As far the whole package is concerned, i.e. drive and enclosure ready to go, Costco (in Toronto) is carrying hard drives of different sizes (up to a 1000 gB) that have both USB2 and FW connectivity.
p.s. References to vendors are for information only, not an endorsement or recommendation.

  • Hard drives, externals, enclosures,... help?

If anyone could lend me their experience and or advice regarding what works well with the MBP (Santa Rosa chip) I would greatly appreciate it. I've attempted to do as much research on this myself, as I understand what works best is subjective a great deal of the time to what you intend to use the space for, however, after much research and acronym discussions +like you wouldn't believe+, I'm fairly confident my brain at this point, is toast.
My primary focus with this drive will be regarding rather large RAW files, working with Aperture and Lightroom, and with any luck being able to do so while hopefully avoiding lagging the workflow process much, if at all. That being, I'm guessing firewire 800, possibly Sata via the expresscard solutions available is the route to take? As far as enclosures and self-built externals go, seagate barracuda's 7200.11 seem to be spot on from what I can find mixed with a lot of people talking up OWC's Mercury Elite.... In the opinion of those familiar with this setup and possibly having made and or used others, would you recommend this option more so than the next or if not, any set reason? Would firewire be fully sufficient for what I'm looking to do or is it worth the money to invest in sata considering progression of technology in that avenue or is this perpendicular recording all it's hyped up to be?
From what I can tell, it seems as though the OWC/Seagate option is the best investment (based on what I'm looking for) in relation to size, speed and overall reliability, but being that I personally have limited knowledge on this subject, I figured I would ask here for any additional insight you guys might be willing to offer.
    Thanks for your time.

Hi, mcholley, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I can't suggest any remedy for your optical drive not reading audio CDs but having no trouble with data CDs, except to say it's apparently a software problem, not hardware-based.
After replacing your hard drive, did you reinstall your operating system from scratch on it, or did you restore your OS from a backup you had made?
The disappearance of your external drives (are they USB or FireWire?) may be power-related. Are they externally powered, or are you powering them from the USB or FireWire bus? If they're bus-powered, are you connecting both of them at once? That won't work: together they demand more power from the bus than it can supply, and while they may spin, they won't mount. Connect only one of them at a time. Is either of them detected by Apple System Profiler when just one is connected to the Powerbook? Does it mount on the desktop then?
If you've been able to connect both drives to the Powerbook at the same time in the past, and both have mounted OK, then there's been some hardware change recently, other than your hard drive replacement, that has caused the loss of external drive detection. Is it possible that during your recent operations you've turned off one or both of the external drives, or disconnected it/them from the Powerbook, without dismounting it from the desktop first? Depending on what, if anything, the drive was doing at the time, that can make a FireWire drive unmountable and all the data on it inaccessible. In that case it may be necessary to erase and reformat the drive. I don't know whether the same is true of USB drives.
Do you have another Mac to which you can connect the drives, to see whether they show up on it? If they do, you might have to consider the possibility that the port(s) to which you've been connecting them on your Powerbook is bad.

  • TM on MacBook with multiple externals

I use a MBP and have an external at the office and one at home which are my two locations. How can i set up two different externals and will TM know the difference?

I don't think you can have two separate drives in use for Time Machine. I would just keep one TM drive where you think you would need it the most.
For example, if you kept it at work, you could use your MBP at home with no TM drive attached. When you hooked it up at work the next day, anything you changed since the previous time it was backed up would get added to the TM archive.
You wouldn't get the same hourly backups that you would get from a drive attached full-time, but it would still be almost as good.

  • How can I import CDs and mp3s from my externals device to Itunes?

    Hello,
I have got a real problem with ITunes. It does not import any data neither from CDs nor externals drives (mp3-drive). It is nearly impossible to do so because I haven't got the access rights. Thank you for your help.

If you use iPhoto you can put your iPhoto Library on an external disk.
If you don't, use Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) to get the material from your camera or phone to wherever you want to put it.
    To move an iPhoto Library
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Embedding externals resources in SWF

Here what I’m tying to do. I have an SWF files exported from Indesign CS5 with animation and some videos/sounds. Their is no options inside InDesign to automatically embedding theses resources when creating the SFW. So when I import the SWF in Catalyst and play it either as SWF or AIR all the video is missing and the sound also. I have read one FAQ  ( http://bit.ly/a7Sk8H ) about that in the forum but the solutions is outdated (was written for the beta in 2009) and does not works.
So, how can we make FC to recognize the externals resources and be able to play them when exported to SWF or AIR?
    Thanks
    Jean-Claude

    Hi Ian...
Ok, that works fine when copying the folders created by InDesign that is called ([Whatever] Resources) at the same level of the main.swf in the bin-ebug folder. This work fine when using Run Project to preview the swf from Catalyst itself. But When Publishing, none of the assets is copied to the "run-local" or "deploy-to-web" folder. So we need to manually copy the resources again.
What I was interested in was to build an AIR app out of Catalyst, but the video/sounds does not seems to be included in the AIr application. At least they do not play in the application.
If I do a right click on the AIR application, and take a look inside the package, in the Contents > Resources folder, I can see the video and sound file in two places (1) Floating at inside the Resources folder and also (2) Inside the assets > medias folder
    So a few question remain.
    (1) Why does I have a duplicate of the files inside the air app?
    (2) Why it is not working (even if I manually place them manually?
    Thanks for your help!

  • Correlation Set With externals partners

    Hello,
I have a question regarding correlation set and there usage.
I'm currently making a samll poc on "correlation set" for testing the feature to determine if we could use it for our use case.
I'm hitting some problems that I can't overcome for the moment, maybe someone could help me.
First, here is my "test" use case :
I have 1 BPEL exposing two webservices interface
    - 1 interface for creating the BPEL instance
    - 1 interface for consulting the status (or other thing) of the BPEL using a functionnal ID
The BPEL logic goes like this :
Receive > validate the request > generate a unique ID > reply to the consumer (attach the unique ID) > loop on the second receive (waiting for consumer calls)
The consumer calls the second interface with the unique ID > The right instance is correlated using the unique ID > some treatment(is the response ready ? for example) > reply to the consumer (with the response if ready, otherwise "false")
The two problems I encounter are the following :
1 - I can't seem to be able to initialize the correlation set value anywhere in the BPEL except for the "Receive activity that create the instance". But that would assume that the consummer supply a unique ID (which is not likely in our case). Is it not possible to initialize the correlation set in the first reply ? or in any other activity in the BPEL ? The documentation doesn't say if you can or can't initialize the correlation set else where.
2 - Whenever a consumer try to "consult" a BPEL status using an unknown ID, the call timeout after 45 seconds with a technical exception. It is not possible to handle such a case in order to supply a "functionnal fault" without waiting the 45 seconds ?
    remark :
This is working totaly fine when I initialize the correlation set with the first request of the consummer but as stated above, my externals partners (several) will not be able to provide me unique ID.

    mathieu

    Hi,
I'm facing the same issue in 10.1.3.3 when trying to use a correlation set on an attribute of a regular xml message.
Have you been able to figure out what the problem was in your case?
    Kind regards,

  • I can't save any file on externals disk

Big externals disk (above 100 GB) appears with orange color on the lateral bar. I can't save any file in this externals disk, I only can copy or read files from this disk. However that is possible in small external disk (16, 8GB or below) that appears with white color on lateral bar.
How can I solve this problem?
    Thanks

Check the Format of the external drive as it might be formatted for PC read/write but Mac Read only ?
Select in then hit command-I and look under 'Format' - NTFS is PC 'standard' - if you want a drive to be read and written to by both PC's and Mac's then you need to format it as FAT32

  • Trouble with automounting externals...tried autofs, hal, udev.

I'm having trouble automounting external USB hard drives, can somebody give me some pointers for setting this up on a fresh install please?  I'd rather use udev and unmount everything from the terminal, but I can't do that until they actually, you know...mount.
I can mount manually, but it gets tedious to do this for ~6 externals every time I boot.  Anyway, I'm trying to get udev to work, and I've used the wiki here, but even after a reboot, I'm getting nothing.  Any ideas?

You can put it in a script or into .xinirtc.

  • FCP not launching from externals

Recently been having difficulty launching FCP from external Rocstor harddrives. At first I thought it was just one of them, now the issue seems to be random (I have 4 externals all with projects in them) I can do a work-around by launching FCP from internal HD's then turning on externals and opening projects but obviously this isn't right. I am willing to accept it could all be due to the compatibility issue of running FCP 4.5 on OS 10.4.11, but that was never an issue as early as 3 months ago. Would getting the proper FCP version for OS 10.4, or even better upgrading both FCP and OS to Leopard fix this (I need to do it anyway) or is this issue to do with the gard drives themselves?
    Thanks,
    Dan.

    A couple quick questions.
You have FCP installed on each of these Roscors AND the boot drive?
And you are trying to launch the app from the externals, rather than launching it from the boot drive?

  • Time Machine backing up other externals.

    Hello folks,
I’ve recently noticed that not only is Time Machine backing up my HD, but also any other external hard drives besides the Time Machine drive that happen to be connected. Is there any possible way, short of unplugging said externals, to make Time Machine avoid backing these up? It’s nice to have them backed up, but it’s getting a bit redundant and also taking up far too much of my Time Machine drive.
    Thanks much!
*I’m a dumbo. Read through 5 pages of threads to see if it had been asked...should have read the FAQ.*

  • Have 2 externals; one for time machine. can time machine back up the other?

I have 2 externals, one for media and large files, and the other exclusively for time machine. I went into time machine options and removed the other external from the omit list. Time machine wouldn't back up the drive then; so i guessed maybe it was too big, so i went through and omitted all but one small file, less than a GB. Is it possible to use the time machine system to back up files on another external?

From just looking in the Time Machine preferences, I think the problem is a little different than what your thinking. It looks as if you can indeed back up one external to another using TM.
The issue seems to be that you cannot have TM backing up more than one hard drive to one other hard drive using only one computer. A.K.A. If you have TM backing up your internal hard disk, then, as far as I can see, you can't select your other external for back up with TM. And, if you select your other external, then your internal won't be backing up.
One possible solution is using a free back up utility like Carbon Copy Cloner (http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13260). You could set your non-TM hard drive to be backed up every hour (the same interval as TM does) to the TM hard drive, and keep your internal backing up the same way it is now. You would end up with TM constantly keeping your main files on the computer up-to-date, and your other external would have the same "safety net." It does appear that CCC it may replace every file in each back up with the new one regardless of changes to the file (same as in every version to date), though I haven't used this updated version of CCC very much yet. But, if you don't need things updated every hour, you can set it to run a backup script on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis as well.
NOTE: One thing to keep in mind is that you should Uncheck the box that says, "Erase the target volume" in the main window of CCC so that you don't loose everything that's already on there when CCC does the back up.

  • Determining a RAID scheme with 2 externals

I just replaced my iMac's internal 250GB HDD with a 500GB HDD. I now have 2 external 250GB Firewire HDD.
I'm trying to be security conscious so I was considering creating a complex RAID with these two external drives rather than using Backup. Per the explanation of a complex RAID in Disk Utility, I am considering striping the two drives and then using them to mirror the new 500GB internal. My questions are:
    1. Is it that easy?
    2. What if I kept these externals in a safe and only brought them out once a week to "sync" with the internal? Does it work like that? or must they be on and connected the whole time?
    3. For curiosity's sake, What would happen if I only turn on one of these two externals, what would the RAID setup decide to do now that the other half isn't there and the drive its supposed to be mirroring is twice its size?
    Thanks,
    Jason

    Hi jsunem;
You asked; "So what good is a RAID for?"
Well let me say that in the right situation Raid can be most useful. If you wish to keep a server up and running through thick and thin then Raid 1 or mirroring will protect you from disk failures. This is of course if you have the correct hardware that allows for hot swapping, read that as expensive.
On the other hand if you need to move large amounts of data with blazing speed then Raid 0 or stripling comes into to play. The downside to it is that if you lose one, you lose everything so backup is extremely important.
There is another alternative and that is Raid 5 which has parity bits stored on a Raid member for data recovery. A Raid 5 array sounds like what you had in mind but they usually take specialized hardware to implement, read that as expensive.
Generally Raid is a solution that is used where cost is not a problem. Hence my suggestion that you don't persue Raid since it doesn't appear that you have sufficent resources to implement it correctly.
To answer you first question last; yes, I would suggest periodic backups as your best solution. There are tools such as SuperDuper that are capable of backing up your data for you during off duty hours. This is what I do. I have SD set up to backup my system drive weekly and my project data three time a week. I feel that give me good enough coverage.

  • X1 and 2 externals screens

    HI,
The X1 has an HDMI and a mini DP, is it possible to work with 2 external extended windows desktop environement?
or can't the 2 output be used symuteniously
    Thank you

Got a confirmation with Lenovo ANZ that the X1 is capable of driving two external monitors when the internal LCD is off. So basically you can use the hdmi and mini DP ports to drive two independent LCD.
    HDMI = 1920 x 1200 max
    mini DP = 2560 x 1600 max

Java 6 you can't as Apple maintains it, and Java 7 you could if you uninstall it and Oracle provides the earlier version which they likely won't his last update fixed 37 remote exploits.
Java broken some software here and there, all you'll have to do is wait for a update from the other parties.

  • How to?  Working images on main computer drive and backup to externals?

    Hi there---
Right now I work in Bridge CS3 and Photoshop and have a workflow and image management system that works for me. But I want to see if I can integrate Lightroom, which I just installed.
I skimmed Martin Evening's book and I am still not sure I can do the following:
Can I keep 3-6 months worth of images on my working computer drive, backing up regularly as I always do, and then erase them on my working computer drive while keeping them on my two backup drives? Or does the Lightroom database not allow you to work that way. My read of Evening is that he works entirely off the external disks. But I don't want to do that. My external disks are just for backups only and I want to keep it that way.
When I would need something from 3-6 months ago, then I'd want to be able to fire up the backup drives and retrieve.
Any suggestions on whether I can do this and how I would do this would be great!
    Thanks, Paul

Thanks! Is there a "how to" posted somewhere about this?? I need workflow suggestions and I'm coming up blank.
Currently, I put a new yyyy-mm-dd-nameofshoot folder for every shoot which contains a folder with the original RAW files. I delete the bad ones in bridge. And develop the ones I want to level 10 jpgs in photoshop. I put those in a JPG folder. Sometimes I put other things in the same folder that I want to keep in there... like client invoices, retouched photos, uprezzed images, web galleries. I try to keep everything together under 1 folder and manage everything through my Mac OS interface... not through software.
My backup routine consists of backing up weekly to two external drives using Prosoft's Data Backup 3. I do a simple copy, not a sync or clone, which only copies new or modified files. If the files get deleted off my computer disk, they get kept on the backup. In this way, I clean my computer disk periodically and retain my backup.
I'm so happy with my backup system and kind of want to retain it, but also use LR. I'm worried that the database will screw up my system of working. But I'm attracted to the easy metadata entry and image search capabilities.
    Any ideas would be appreciated!
