Extra Ethernet plugs?!

I currently have BT home hub 3 connected to phone line and mac connecting via airport. My printer and HDD's etc are all ethernet and I used to plug into the back of the hub. Due to a recent move, the hub is now situated downstairs with the mac and devices upstairs. I only have one ethernet port on the back of the mac. How can I attach my devices?
Will an airport exteme plugged directly into the mac, connect to the wireless network being transmitted by the hub and then allow me to connect my devices to it for use by the mac? Is this even necessary?? Or can I use an ethernet switching (hub) station to give me more ethernet ports to connect my mac with? Have trawled the internet, but I'm not sure they work without being connected to the router/home hub?
Any help would be much appreciated in getting my network configured the right way. Many thanks.

One option would be to use an 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), configured as a wireless Ethernet bridge, coupled with an Ethernet switch should be able to provide the necessary wired connections. The AXn would be configured to join the wireless network provided by the BT HomeHub. Its Ethernet port would be enabled to which you could connect the Ethernet switch.

  • Trouble setting up my wireless internet with Built-in ethernet plug?!

I purchased a MacBook (OS X 10.5.5) in August 2008 and have been able to connect to a wireless internet until mid February (I live in an apartment and the owner of the network moved) so i went to Telus and purchased a wireless internet port. I have the Siemens square box. When i used the set up CD it kept asking to connect the the wire from the port to my Ethernet plug however when i called Telus they said that my computer's port is wireless and I would need apples assistance to set it up.
So after this much phone tag and frustration I called apple, and they said they could help me out but my phone assistance warranty is up and it would cost me 60 dollars to get them to help me for a few minutes or they suggested coming online and looking around in apples support department
I'm sure someone else has had this problem so any kind of helpful explanation as to what i am to do or a link to a previous explanation would be great!
    Thanks

Try pressing and holding the reset buttonfor ~30 sec.
I had trouble too, but I was using the setup CD that came with the router. Kept stopping at step 7 when it asked for a password. Tech support suggested using the on-line install. www.linksys.com/easy
But the password problem kept persisting until they advised on a 2nd call to use the reset button on the back of the router.

Problem establishing login screen when ethernet plugged into NetComm NB5Plus4
I get a flashing folder that does not allow the login page to appear.
If I remove the ethernet connection then boot-up the system establishes the login page and I can plug the ethernet back in and the system logins in.
Where should I look to identify the problem, I am thinking it is the OS X install.

  • Mouse/Keyboard that work on Macbook without extra USB plug

    Hello.
I just wonder are there any non-Apple Mice/Keyboards that do work with Macbook (mine is 5.5, OS X 10.8) out-of-the-box without any extra usb plugs required.
I dont care if they are genuine or some "custom-China" ones, if they are good for me I am in
Also, is there a way to understand if particular mouse/keyboard will work without the "extra-usb-plug" ? I have one old Bluetooth mouse here, and the macbook can't find her ...

    Research the information on Google.
I have one old Bluetooth mouse here, and the macbook can't find her
Could be any number of things.  The main ones are dying or dead mouse battery, system preferences not met & not compatible.  Post in the Bluetooth community for other suggestions.

  • MBA doesn't boot with Ethernet plugged in /Startup disk ok

    Hi everyone
My Macbook Air running OS X no longer boots when the ethernet cable (via USB adapter) is plugged in - it gets stuck at the grey screen. It starts booting as soon as I unplug it.
I have already reset the startup disk, but to no success...
Internet works fine when I plug it in after starting up.
    Does anyone have another idea?

Right now I have a MBR-formatted harddisk in the ultrabay with the bootloader in the MBR. Once I get the bootloader off the MBR disk, I can easily continue to boot from my GPT-formatted SSD.
Yes, it seems that it's a BIOS bug at least on T520, T420s and W520 laptops. Even in "Legacy" mode first stage bootloader doesn't execute if partition type is 0xEE (GPT).
Hope Lenovo developers will fix it. They fixed something on BIOS 1.31

  • Making airport default interface while having ethernet plugged in

    Hello,
I want to have my internet activity going through airport while using Wirewhark to sniff my ethernet interface. Is it possible? Everytime I plug the ethernet cable in, my default network interface becomes the ethernet adapter, and there is no connectivity there, only packets being sent to be sniffed, so I loose my email access and so on.
    Thanks,

Go to System Preferences, Network, and arrange the network device list so that AirPort is above Ethernet in the list (you drag and drop them). I'm not in front of my mac right now so I cant tell you the exact clicking sequence, but this is very doable in the Network Control Panel.
    Good luck!

  • Erratic trackpad when ethernet plugged in

    Hi,
I've got a brand new MBP 15" with a trackpad that works perfectly while on wireless. However, as soon as I plug in an ethernet cable - even when the network is not being used - the trackpad immediately becomes erratic and unusable.
As soon as I unplug the ethernet cable, the trackpad reverts to working fine again.
It only seems to be a problem when on battery.
There's a post from Jan 2010 that reports exactly the same problem but is now archived so I can't respond to it.
    To summarise,
Ethernet cable plugs in --> Trackpad doesn't track correctly.
Ethernet cable out --> Trackpad tracks fine.
Is this a known problem ? Should I be taking the laptop back to Apple ?
    Thanks !
    Andrew

    Hi,
AS the MacBook Pro is new I would take advantage of the Service and AppleCare level you still have.

  • Ethernet plugs and unplugs very quickly on Airport Extreme

Basically what happens is the ethernet connects and disconnects continuously and at a really quick pace so the base station goes crazy. The status signals jump from 2 to 3 a nd viceversa along with the ethernet unplugging and plugging and it's extremely annoying because I can't use my wifi (iCloud goes into tilt) and no metter how many times I try taking the power out and repositioning the ethernet cable, it still doesn't work. The AirPort is set up over WAN but that has never given me problems, in fact it was the solution to my first problem with the base station, and ever since it has worked properly.
This issue has started ever since a bad lightning storm which completely took out all my other devices (TV, PlayStation, internet modem) except the AirPort and the Apple TV. I'm saying this because avter jiggling with the ethernet cable a few timeas and bending it a little, the connection would settle and hold for quite some time. This time the connection won't settle and it's aggravating me too much. So my idea is that the ethernet cable is damaged.
Help would really be appreciated, please help me solve this

So my idea is that the ethernet cable is damaged.
That might be possible, but a new cable would solve that.
This issue has started ever since a bad lightning storm
What has likely happened is that the WAN circuit board behind the WAN port was damaged by the storm/ightning, as were other devices.
The AirPort Extreme will need to be replaced.

  • Ethernet Plugs DO NOT CLICK into place!

    Hello.
I just bought a brand new iBook at an Apple Store today and it's great... but I plugged an ethernet cord into the ethernet port and the plastic end does not click into place... I tried multiple cords from different makers that I know work in other devices... The port does not look faulty but maybe it is, I'm not sure.
Anyone else ever have this kind of problem with their MacBook?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

CINEMAnGUY: If you ethernet cable is the type with the rubber/plastic sleeve on the back of the connector, you might try sliding it back to prevent it from hitting up against the MacBook jack. These sleves are more of a pain in the * than anything else/\. Good Luck

  • Unresponsive Novo Menu When Ethernet Plugged In (u430 Touch)

    Hello,
I have an interesting problem with my u430 Touch.  Recently I needed access to the boot menu, and I found that when I use the Novo button with an ethernet cable plugged in it will hang after a variable (but small) amount of time.
I tested this multiple times and found it only hangs when ethernet is plugged in.  Can someone else try this with their u430 Touch and see if they get the same results?  Perhaps this is a bug in the Novo menu.
    - Jon

You cannot share an IP address amongst two devices without some intelligence on the device you're connecting to. You need load-balancing in there to do that properly.
    Picture it this way:
Your MAC sends OUT information on it's highest priority port - in this case en0.
Your router responds to the IP address by using ARP (address resolution protocol) to resvolve the IP address to the interface's MAC address. My guess is the ARP table on your router shows that the IP address resolves to the MAC address of the wireless.
ARP is cached. If you cleared the cache on the router the Ethernet Port may respond to the ARP request and you'll get the routing that you want.
It's not really a workable solution in my opinion - sharing one IP amongst two distinct interfaces. ARP is going to get properly twisted.

  • X220 Trackpad curser movement with Ethernet plugged in and with VGA connected to projector

Thre are many issues discussed about trackpad problem. My problem comes in the trackpad when X220 is connected to Ethernet port. The curser is not stable and it jumps aout 1/2 cm right and left withlout any figer movement, It vibrates on its own when only finger  is placed on the touchpad. This does not happen when Ethernet port is diconnected even with 90w adapter or 65w adapter plugged in. It comes with Ethernet only.
The same preoblem comes again when VGA port is connected to Projector. In my case problm has no affect with any power adapter.(90 or 65 w) plugged in.

  • AE as extra Ethernet port?

    Hi All,
New to this forum and Apple networking. I received an AE and AEBSn for Christmas to revamp my network at the house. I want to use the wireless portion only sparingly AE and ocassionaly laptop use only) as I have Cat6 cables to several rooms and love the Gb speed from the AEBSn. My question is can I use the AE to not only stream iTunes media wirelessly, but can I also use the Ethernet port to access the network and internet, I guess making the AE a bridge of some kind?
    TIA,
    mark

Hello msymms. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
My question is can I use the AE to not only stream iTunes media wirelessly, but can I also use the Ethernet port to access the network and internet, I guess making the AE a bridge of some kind?
Yes you can. You have at least two options to do so:
o Reconfigure the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) as a ProxySTA, or
o Reconfigure the AXn to extend the wireless range of your AEBSn.
I suggest trying the first option to see if this will meet your requirements.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the AXn to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility. The feature should work with any wireless network: a, b, g, or n; and 5GHz or 2.4GHz. (Note that the Express, which ships with firmware 7.3, must also be updated to firmware 7.3.1 for this feature to appear.)

  • ITunes won't stream without ethernet plugged in

I have a router (not wireless) connected to the Internet. and a G5 with an Airport Extreme card connected to the router (along with other Macs). I have an Airport Express with AirTunes. I can play music from ITunes through the Airport Express fine as long as I have Ethernet connected from it to the router, but not otherwise.
Can I configure this setup to play music from iTunes without being connected to the Internet through Ethernet and the router? (If so, how?)
    Thanks,
    Thad

I was able to play AirTunes with no ethernet connected (not doing anything special to get it to "work"), but it frequently skipped and stalled... to the point it wasn't really that useable.
Don't know if there is really a way around it.

  • Can I add an extra Ethernet port to my AirPort Extreme (802.11n)???

    hi all.
I have an Apple AirPort Extreme (802.11n). On the back I have 3 Ethernet ports. All the 3 ports are used (one for an Ethernet Printer, One is connected to my computer and one is connected to my wife's computer. I need an additional Ethernet port for a music server. I have no idea of how to extend the Ethernet ports number.
    Thanks for any Help
    David - Canada

Hello David Gershon1. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You could simply add a multi-port Ethernet switch to any of the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBSn) LAN ports to increase the number of available ports. An example would be the Linksys EZXS55W.

  • Mac won't start with ethernet plugged in

My Mac won't fully start when ethernet is in computer. Do I not have the Ethernet fully installed or something?

It's far more likely that you have a faulty Ethernet cable; the connectors may be frayed or the cable kinked. A lesser possibility is that the router or modem on the other end of the cable has a shorted Ethernet port. That' also possible on the other end with your computer, but if it otherwise works OK, suspect the cable first. Try substituting a known-good Ethernet cable and if that's not available, try a new cable.
