Extra fm-ditafile tag is generated in book file after generating FM

I'm using Adobe FrameMaker 8 in Tech Comm Suite 1 in Windows XP.
When we generated our book files from ditamaps, we seem to be getting an extra fm-ditafile tag in each chapter.  We have been unwrapping these extra tags, but then we have to reapply all of the headings.  For example, by removing the extra tag, the first heading automatically becomes Heading 1, but retains the formatting for Heading 2.  Heading 2's must be made Heading 3's and so on.
While this works, it's a very manual process.  Is there any way to eliminate that extra fm-ditafile tag or to easily reapply all of the headings?
Thanks.

Okay, figured out what was throwing an extra heading level in our chapter files in a generated book.  It was a title attribute in the dita file tag.  Once I removed it, all of the headings fall into line.
Thanks again for your assistance and encouragement.
I think I may have run out of questions - I'm sure it's temporary.

  • Frame 10 Book won't Generate: Unused Font That Won't Go Away

We have some very old files that have been upgraded to Frame 10 with new templates. Templates imported just fine, but when you go to generate the book, it pops up the console window telling you about "HelveticaNeueLTStd-TD Font not available" and the states that the book was not updated because of errors during the update process. A particular file shows up on the error list.
So, I open the file, the Console tells me it is substituting Times New Roman. I try re-importing the template, clean out overrides. Save. Try again, same issues. I have also tried pasting it into a clean template. Same problem. I've even looked at fonts on all my paragraph tags.
Is there anything I should try before giving up on it, and just pasting text-only into a new template, and reformating from scratch?

    Jane,
Before you start cleaning your files: Just open all files of the book (open book, hold the shift key, select File > Open All Files in Book, accept all warning messages). From then on book update and everything should work.
FrameMaker just resists working with files opened in the background that might have some issues.
    - Michael
PS: Have you tried the new font replacement feature of FrameMaker using the Fonts pod?

  • Photo Book - issue with generating full size picture in PDF file

    Need some assistance here.
I have created a photo book that I would like to order. In the middle of the book I have 2 pages that contain a full size picture on each of the pages. When I generate the PDF file one of these two pictures do not generate correctly leaving an incorrectly rendered rectangle in the bottom left hand corner. 80% of the time it is on of the 2 large 8x10 pictures, the other 20% it is the other 8x10 picture. Aperture does indicate the dpi is large enough to support a quality 8x10 photo.
I have exported jpeg files for each of these pictures and there were no problems. I am not sure by I have this problem in creating the PDF. Does any one see a potential issue with the book? When I order the photo book is it done through he PDF file or are the pictures sent in?
Because of the issue I am cautious to order the Photo Book, but would like to do so.
Any thought or feedback? Is this something that will come through as problem with the photo book as well?
    Thanks

    Hi ejg999,
I have a similar problem running 10.5.2/ Aperture 2.0 trial.
My 15800*4700 pixel (19.8mb) panorama was completely screwed up when printing the book to PDF. I did not span the pict over 2 pages as the center part would not be visible in the book's fold. I created 2 full size pages, resized the frames and adjusted their position.
The print just shows hundreds of small squares, some seem ok, some are blue, some are rendered partially. Totally unusable.
The physical memory was not the problem as I had at least 500mb free during the printing operation.
I printed the book twice: same problem. I thought shutting down Aperture would resolve the error. but all my pics were gone. And the Time Machine did not backup while Aperture was running (still a bug). Aaaaaarghhhh.
I managed to restore my work. I will try to create a smaller copy of the panorama and try to print.
BTW, what is the size of your photo creating the problems?
    regards

  • Generating a Book from DITA Map

    Hi All,
In the DITA-FMx plugin developed by Leximation, there's a feature called Generate Book from Map. It allows me to create a FrameMaker book from a DITA map or bookmap and then do whatever I can do with any FrameMaker book, including create a PDF.
Is there anything similar in the native Adobe's DITA plugin? How can I get to a book from a DITA map/bookmap?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Alex--
It's not a straight forward process, but it's doable.
You don't say what version of DITA or FrameMaker you are using, but you mention the "Adobe DITA plug-in," which hasn't been a plugin for quite a while. I only have experience with FM10 and DITA 1.2. This is what I must do to create a book to print.
For me I have one "book level" ditamap that has several submaps in it. Each submap corresponds to a chapter. The book level ditamap lacks the front matter, ToC, and IX. Those get added later.
    1. From my ditamap I must choose File > Save Ditamap As..
    2. In the Save as type field I choose Composite Document 10 (.fm).
With the composite .fm file, insert it into a FrameMaker book file, add any front matter (copyright, etc), add/create your ToC and IX, update/generate, and then print as you normally would.

  • Generating a Book

I've created a book using a 3rd-party template. I now need to generate/update the book. I do not see a Gnerated command on the File menu. Where is that command, or how do I do this?
    Thanks!

    Dave,
    Two things:
When you open a content file, did you click some place in the content? The insertion point needs to be inside a text flow to show structure in the structure view.
It is possible, though I would think rare, to have a structured book with unstructured content files. In my work, I use a structured book that has mostly structured document files, but also has a few unstructured ones. So, I am thinking that maybe the original author used an old structured book file and added unstructured files to it, which would give you the results you are seeing.

Also now the deprecated should show up in the property and method summary table.

    Update!
v3.1 has a major bug! Even though it may appear to work properly, strange characters may leak onto the end of URLs, and you may even get segfaults. Sorry I didn't properly test it before releasing it!
    Technical details:
I calloc()ed the memory for the link href improperly, per:
    link = calloc((noprepend ? 0 : urllen) + i - s, 1);
Once I fixed it with "+ 1", per:
    link = calloc((noprepend ? 0 : urllen) + i - s + 1, 1);
    it worked great.
I may use a method that doesn't use a calloc() in the future; this works for now, and I'm not gonna knock it...

  • How does one regenerate a Book using a previously generated *.bk log file?

I could swear that I've done this before, but I can't remember the correct steps to take.  I'm using FrameMaker v10.  Thanks.

You don't/can't. Just use the Edit > Update Book (or Alt-F6) to regenerate.
If by "regenerate" you mean to create a new version of a book, then just add the required files to a new book file and set your options as required.

  • A book file in InDesign CS3 (.indb) - Mac and PC - crashing issue

Several months ago, I posted that when I indexed a 300-page book with lots of chapter, generating the index crashed InDesign. This happened initially on a PC running Windows XP home. When I took the book to a Macintosh, it happened also.
One thing I had done, and I don't know if this makes a difference, is changed words that already had index tags attached to them.
It has been several months since I've tried this - I've been waiting until this book was completely written before trying again.
Since this happened, I've also tried to synchronize styles and that also crashed InDesign. Before the index 'broke', both generating the index and synchronizing styles worked like perfectly - amazing functions of InDesign and makes working with a book much easier.
Now the book is ready. I stripped all of the index codes from the entire book using search and replace, and then the first time I tried to open the Index window, it crashed again.
When it recovered, there was a message that 5 of my 24 documents in this book may be damaged.
So I tried opening the indb file, opening the Indexing window, THEN opening the book files and it crashed. I was able to get the error message this time: An exception unkown software exception (0xc000000d) ocurred in the application at location 0x78138aa0. Click OK to terminate the program.
When InDesign came back up, I closed the Index window and was able to open all of the book's files with no problem.
    My questions are:
1 - Is there any way to find out where/how those files are damaged?
2 - Does anyone know what may cause an Index generation or style synchronization to crash InDesign - and then not fix the problem?
3 - Could this be something other than the index, and how do I figure out what it might be?
This book is now 374 pages in 24 documents, and I don't think there is a way to go backwards in the InDesign process at this point.
I'm not sure how clear I'm being with all of this, but the book is to go to the printer Monday and I can't index it.
I'd appreciate any help I can get.
    Thanks so much,
    Marcy

Just to add to Eugene's recommendation. Q2ID is worth every last dime of the $200 it cost.
I just upgraded to the latest version when I received 25 Quark files to convert for an iPad app. Even for early Quark files that InDesign can open, it does a better job.
BTW, it's also worth noting here that Adobe cannot legally have InDesign open anything later than Quark 4.x files due to the encryption used in Quark 5 and later files. Quark is too dependent on Markzware for XTensions to go after them.

  • My page generates an Excel file but sometimes fails if the page loads to slowly...

I'm having a problem generating an Excel file using CF and
looping over a bunch of queries to get a table of data to display
to the user. This is slow but works fine except for an instance
recently where the page seems to be loading but after a few minutes
it stops and says "the page cannot be displayed". The error leads
me to believe it is a server error and not a CF error but I'm not
sure. I don't have timeout checked in my CF Admin so that should
mean that I can request pages for as long as I need to right?
I'm using the cfheader and cfcontent to dynamically generate
an Excel spreadsheet from my HTML. I tried using the cfflush tag
and that seemed to help since it pushes content to the browser
during the page load but it doesn't work with the cfheader and
    cfcontent tags.
So then I tried using the cfsavecontent tag and then save the
HTML to a file but again I couldn't use the cfflush tag inside the
cfsavecontent tag so now I'm stuck.
The page DOES load when I run in on my local machine with MX
6.1 Developer Edition and SQL Server Personal Edition. It DOES NOT
work when I run it on my production server that then calls my
separate database server. I'm wondering if there is a timeout (non
CF) set somewhere on the productions server or the database server
or if there is some sort of limit to the amount of data you can
    transfer between servers?
I'm totally stumped now so any advice is greatly
    appreciated!

That didn't work for me and the page times out right about 5
minutes (300 seconds). I don't have timeout checked in the CF
Administrator so I don't think it is CF that is causing the
timeout. I checked IIS also and the timeout is set to 900 seconds.
Is there a possibility that SQL Server has some sort of
connection limit and I'm using too many cfquery tags? If anyone has
experienced a similar problem I would really appreciate the help,
    thanks.

  • Export to PDF from Book file is freezing

I'm trying to export books to PDF from the ID CS6 book panel.
Shorter books are exporting with no problem, but some of the longer ones are hanging up around page 380 or so. The Generating PDF dialog appears and shows that the export process is stalling; when I open the Force Quit Applications window, it shows "InDesign (not responding)".
I have a brand new computer, and have no other applicaitons running when trying to export, so the processing power should not be an issue.
Is there something I can do to solve this problem?
I need to use the Export Book to PDF function to get the TOC links to function properly in the entire exported PDF.
Thanks in advance, this is a huge problem, and has never happened in the past.

Thakns Peter, I had seen this thread, but it doesn't really address my issue. I've exported individual chapters from the book file, all with success, so I know there isn't a file corruption issue.  The problem seems to do more with memory allocation/usage.
I have tried: quitting and then immediately exporting the file, and even rebooting and then relanuching and exporting.  Both of these allow me to get a few pages farther along, but still not through the entire book.
I remember back in the day there used to be a setting for how much RAM/dis c space was allocated to a certain applicatino (I knowm it was a long time ago).  I didn't know if there might be something like this hidden somewhere

  • Cannot generate a pdf file in Framemaker 9

I have been struggling with generating pdf file while they were all in a book, but sometimes it worked. But because I needed to add a pdf that was created in Adobe LifeCycle Designer ES2 to the already generated pdf file and this newly added file would lose its date text boxes, I have decided to get rid of the book and generate separate files altogether. I have saved those files after I had deleted the book file and now I cannot create a pdf file no matter what setting or option I try. Adobe does not exactly make it easy to troubleshoot any kind o issue. Is there someone out there who has run into this kind of problem and found a solution to it? Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much,
    Simone

Simone, to elaborate a bit on what Arnis and Jeff are suggestiong:
After you make a .ps file, open Adobe Distiller, you should see a white area where any errors will be displayed while the file is being distilled. Now drag the .ps file into Distiller, or double-click on it, either way you should see the white message area begin to process the file.
In the bottom white box it will display page numbers as it processes the file. Watch to see what page number is displayed immediately before you see the error message. That will tell you approximately what page in your FM file is the culprit. Remember that the page numbers shown in Distiller are the "logical" numbers, from "1" on, not the actual page numbers you might have assigned in your FrameMaker document(s), so if the Distiller stops at, say, page 16, you might have 3 pages of TOC and then the first FM content file might start at 1, so the error would be around 16 - 4 = FM page 12.
So then go look at what content is on pages 11 or 12 in your FM document. What unusual kind of content is on those pages? Are there graphics? Inset referenced files?
Unfortunately testing Acrobat from Powerpoint doesn't have much direct comparison to FrameMaker and PDF because Office applications use a completely different process to create a PDF.

  • Images being resized in book file in FM10

    I'm using TCS3, FM10 in Windows XP.
When we generate books all of our images are being resized to 72 dpi.  Most of them are 150dpi in the source files.  What is causing this?

I think there's something amiss with your structure application. Try using the default app to see if things work properly.
When you insert an image and set the DPI, do the image/@width and @height attributes get set? This is what controls the image size. I haven't tested image resizing for a book from a map in default FM10-DITA (it works great with DITA-FMx) .. how are you generating the book?

  • How to number Figure Titles continously across book files

Currently in our book files, the Figure Titles restart at 1 in each book file. We would like them to number continously throughout the whole book, so that if there are 3 figures in chapter 1, the first figure in chapter 2 automatically starts at 4 (and if figures are added or deleted, the numbers update automatically when you generate the book).
Is this possible to do or are we forced to number our figures with a chapter preface (first chapter figures are 1.1, 1.2, etc., second chapter figures are 2.1, 2.2, etc.)

    It's very possible and easy.
    1. Assign a "series label" to the paragraph format that holds the autonumber
for your figures. I use "F:" for figures. For example, "F:Fig. <n+>.\sn" is
the autonumber format I use.  It gives a result such as "Fig. 3. " (I also
assign a bold character format to the autonumber format, to separate it from
    the caption text.)
    2. In the book file, select the files you want to be affected, right click
and choose "Numbering." On the Paragraph tab, set "Continue Numbering from
    Previous Paragraph in Book."
    3. Edit> Update Book to see the result.
    4. Done!
Series labels come in really handy. Some use separate series labels for
tables, photos, charts, etc., but that can become confusing to readers very
quickly. (Table 1 follows Plate 6?). It's easier and clearer to use a single
series label for all illustrative elements.
