Extra Hard Drive

I am running a Mac Mini and have used Boot Camp to load both Mac OSX and Windowa XP. They work fine , each with about 30 GB of Hard Drive.
I now want to expand the Hard Drive capacity , equally for both Operating Systems. I have a free-standing 120 GB hard drive with USB. May I use that or must I get a "Mac-approved" one to avoid any mismatching. If so, what is the aproved model of a Hard Drive (about 100 GB)for use with the Mac Mini?
Please refer me to detailed instructions how to install the extra USB hard drive and how to partition it so that its two halves work, one with Mac OSX and the other with Windows XP.
Thank you for your help, Michael ([email protected])

How do I now get it to show also in "My Computer" as
"Drive E:", so that I can save and retrieve data to and from that drive, using the customary notation.
That's really a bootcamp question and you will get a better selection of forum users trying to answer it if you post it in the bootcamp forum:

I have a HP Pavilion g7-1219wm Notebook PC and i was wondering if there was room for an extra hard drive ? I'm thinking about maybe getting a 1 TB hard drive and run Win 8 on it and run Win 7 on the hard drive thats in it now because some of my apps won't work with Win 8. Thanks

No it only takes one hard drive:

You can dual boot Windows 8 and Windows 7 on one hard drive, however. Microsoft has made it harder than in past versions of Windows, but it can be done:

Well first you have to figure out what is wrong with the machine and solve that problem first.
Your post is very vague on what occured, and there are many types of "crashes" it really depends upon what see on the screen and what the hardware does, we can't see it to tell you, so you have to tell us.
I suggest you run through these user tips and provide more information about your hardware.

  • Fitting an extra hard drive to the Pavilion p6-2033de

I would very much like to fit an extra hard drive to this machine (SSD).  Can you tell me what I need to do ?  There does not appear to be an extra bay for another hard drive although there is certainly a spare SATA connector on the motherboard and a spare power connector.  Any help would be much appreciated thank you.

    Hi,
Your PC is not provisioned for multiple hard drives.
If you don't use your optical drive then remove it and use a 5.25" to 2.5" adapter.  You can always obtain an external adapter or enclosure for the optical drive.
Use a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter and fasten the SSD to the bottom of the PC.
This Dual 3.5" HD stacking bracket along with a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter might work.
You might be able to bolt the SSD to the area just above the hard drive. Try aligning the SSD from inside the fame to some of the existing holes.  This thread may give you some ideas.

  • Cannot rejoin partition in extra hard drive

I have a 3TB SATA hard drive that I just created a partion upon in order to install windows (with bootcamp).
This is an extra hard drive and does not carry the operating system OSX 10.8.4.
    I alloted 1TB for windows.
I was using bootcamp and all was going lovely when I recieved an error message that windows couldnt be installed.
So, I decided I would start over again and rejoin that partition and leave windows off of my computer for now.
But, here lies my problem, I can rejoin that 1tb and that 2tb back together. There are no options.
    Help?
I know you'll probably need more info. Just ask and ye shall recieve.

There are two issues, lack of support by Disk Utility in 10.8.4 for 2.2TB and larger, but new support in Boot Camp Assistant for 3TB drives.
The likely reason though that Windows can't be installed is you have to remove all other drives during install / You need to Windows to format and use part of the drive.
Normally BCA will want to use the whole drive if there is no Mac system on it. Windows would do better if it was the only OS using the drive and format just 1TB for instance and use the rest of the drive for other purposes so Windows is within the 2.2TB region.

  • New DV7T-How to add extra hard drive? (Resolved)

There are only 2 SATA slots. One is for the hard drive and the other for an optical drive (DVD/CD-ROM..). There are also 2 PATA/IDE slots for PATA devices. There is also a PCIe x1 slot so you can use this slot to get this: http://www.span.com/product/SATA-3Gb-SATA2-PCIE1x21-PCI-Express-x1-Card-1x-SATA,-1x-5x-eSATA-support...
which is a PCIe x1 SATA card which gives you another SATA slot for a SATA device if the slot is still empty.

  • Mac Pro, Creative Suites and extra hard drive query

I am seriously looking at purchasing a 15" Mac Pro this year - I know what specs I want, but I am curious as to what Mac users do re the extra hard drives? I am used to having a second hard drive on my PC for scratch discs for the Creative Suites including CS4. What do Mac users use for extra scratch discs? Do you use a removable drive? Apple tells me that I can't have any second hard drive in the Mac Pro or iMac, hence my query. (I will also be attaching my Wacom Cintiq 21UX to it as well.) Thank you.

Thank you Steve - however I use the scratch disc in both Illustrator and Photoshop and Premiere, hence it becomes a more general question.
In moving to a Mac I am trying to understand whether the drives work differently, or can you partition the main drive on a Mac and use those partitions for scratch discs?

  • Does it support 2 (one extra) Hard drives? "GT70 2OD-831XBE"

    Hi there,
So I found this laptop that I really want. Why? Because 4700MQ and GTX 780M...
BUT it has only one hard drive (7200rpm 1TB), and I would love add my 256GB SSD to it.
Question is.. Can I? Is there room for one? Does it support an extra hard drive? I have seen "GT70 2OD" models vary from 1 to 3 hard drives..
I have to ask it here, on this forum because the googles doesn't know the model number "GT70 2OD-831XBE". The BE stands for Belgium and means it has an Azerty keyboard (yes sadly enough I need it, I live there). Oh btw this one doesn't have an operating system pre-installed. I have no clue, but maybe that's what the "X" stands for?
You can check out the website for the specs (written in dutch, but I think you can manage).
If you add 'www' than this is the link: laptopshop.be/product/410408/category-180904-msi-laptops/msi-gt70-2od-831xbe-azerty.html#product_specifications
I really hope you guys can help me.
    Thanks.

Thank you very much for your response darkhawk.
So either way I will always be able to fit a 2nd hard drive in there?
Because there is only one hard drive in there, which means there is a free bay physically (wether it is for SATA or SuperRaid 2).
Are there GT70 models that don't have 2 bays? (This was my initial question, I now notice it was confusing.)
And yeah if there is a 2nd slot it probably won't be SuperRaid 2 (which is good in my case ).
This will be my first MSI laptop so I'm very new to the brand, the used hardware and model numbers.
    Thank's again!
    A GT70 is a GT70 is a GT70.
Basically, no matter what GT70 (as of writing this...keep that in mind) it is, it will have 2 x 2.5" bays. In some cases, 1 bay will be taken up by a SuperRaid/SuperRaid 2 (older models like my 0NE came with SuperRaid, newer 2OE's and such come with SuperRaid 2) card, in others it will be an open/free slot.
As I said, it will have 2 bays no matter what. I'm just not sure if the 2nd bay will be SATA or SuperRaid. Most likely it will be SATA, but I can't say with 100% certainty.

  • Extra Hard Drive case for M90z?

    Hi,
I'd like to know if/where I can buy an extra Hard Drive case (the blue caddy holding the HD) for M90z.  It would come in handy for quickly switching multiple HDs I have.  A quick search on Google says that the part number may be 3QQU8HFLV00, but I didn't see any seller as trustworthy.
    Thanks,

Hi, you need to know if the drive is IDE/ATA/PATA, or SATA, and Firewire is far better than USB...
The old ATA cases are getting hard to find, here's a SATA case...

    ATA...

Here's a universal way if it doesn't need to be bootable or require speed...

Which actually works for any drive.

  • Can i replace the optical drive with a adapter to house an extra hard drive

will it fit and will my computer run faster if i have it ?

It isn't going to do anything with the speed of your computer.  It will give you more storage so you can store more things, but nothing with the speed of the overall computer.  What would speed it up is to get a faster hard drive then the original one installed which can load data faster, however, putting in a second one isn't going to unless it was faster and you had the OS installed on that one.

  • Why don't extra hard drives show up in finder window?

I have an older MacPro running 10.7.5 with 4 internal drives. Just this morning the three extra drives do not show up in a finder window under "Devices." I used "Disk Utility" to verify all three and no problem was indicated. I checked "Finder - Preferences and under "Devices" all 4 boxes are checked. I unchecked them, closed the window and then rechecked them to no avail. One of them is my backup disk. When I attempt to enter "Time Machine" I get the message "The Time Machine Disk cannot be found." What could cause them to disappear. I have not tried opening the case, removing the disks and reinserting them.

Might be corrupted Finder preferences ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac. See if external drives mount in the Finder.

    *An i-rocks IR-4300-S USB 2.0 4-port hub
I will Buy this all for under $80 from Newegg.com.
    The Links Are Here:
    The MASSCOOL: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145751

My questions is, is it worth spending the money to have an extra 82GB of HD space, get rid of my PC for ever, and be able to burn DVDs?

Well, I bought the MASSCOOL and the USB Hub just about 5 min ago. So next week, when I get the money, I'll buy the Syba. Also, Peggy, the Syba is FireWire 400, but there wasn't a 2.5" enclosures that used FireWire for under $15 Shipped, so USB 2.0 will do. Also, the rest of the USB devices I had already owned, so it wouldn't have made a differance. I will report back when I order the Syba, and when everything is installed. Also, I am out of USB ports, so I am going to order a seccond hub with the Syba, I will get the same one BTW.

To access the DVD drive bays, open the Mac Pro case and simply pull the drive bay assembly out by the handle.  Don't pull all the way out, because the drive is connected to a cable.
