Extra HD question

Just removed my Maxtor  40Gb 5T040H4  from my old PC, anyone got any idea if this will coexist with my new PC as a storage backup drive, & would I have to use IDE 3 for connection looks like IDE 1 & 2 are connected to optical drives.
Edit
Sorry correction just checked IDE 1 is daisy chained to DVD & CDRW
IDE2 & 3 are vacant.
Thanks for any advice

Sorted Guys thanks very much for the help, it made me laugh,   I started off with one 316 odd Gb drive but when I eventually got the correct drivers installed I almost wet myself to find 3 Hds.
All with information on them.
1 C 316 odd Gig
2 F 30 odd gig
3 G with 8 odd Gig
Took a while then it came to me, I Dos Fdisked the 40Gig drive just before I changed to the current PC Jeez, and I liked DOS
Had to use My Computer right click > manage to get rid of the partition

hey guys my physics teacher gave me an extra credit question to answer. judging by my grade in physics...i could really use the help. Why does the mac labtop use a 2 prong charger but the extension cord is a 3 prong?

Arent you supposed to do the homework yourself?
you need to read about the differences:

  • Current/Extra repo question

I have got a question about those repos (excuse my stupidity).
I always thought that current provides the stable stuff and extra is just additional, presumably newer. Now, there are two different mesa versions, the one in current being the newer one. Same holds true for xvidcore. Is there any way of telling what the difference is, except looking at the PKGBUILDs? What is the reason for them being there under the same name?

    As for the mirror:

    Shouldn't that be up-to-date?
there's a secret mirror before that.
And also, if I enter 'kernel26beyond' into the package search field at Arch's main page, it shows:

  • Extra Memory Question

Does the iphone have a microSD type card slot or something like that which will allow you to add some extra memory? Didn't see anything on the website, so I'm guessing no, but I just wanted to ask to make sure.

    No it doesn't.
The 3GS is available with 16GB or 32GB.

  • HT201303 Extra security questions... Help!

When trying to install Apps, it keeps asking me to help with security by answering 3 questions, but then won't direct to any page and keeps asking for my password and repeating... Help!!!

You might try to see if you can change your security questions. Start here, change your country if necessary and go to manage your account > Password and Security.
I'm able to do this, others say they need to input answers to their current security questions in order to make changes, I'm inclined to think its worth a try, you don't have anything to lose.
If that doesn't help you might try contacting Apple through Express Lane (select your country, navigate to iCloud help and enter the serial number of one of your devices)

  • Extra-Beginner Question:  Can you get a program to output PrintLn?

In other words, can I get a program to output its status in real-time, like this:

I know you can do this with Netbeans, but my thin client doesn't have enough room for it. Is there a simple java utility that does the same thing?
    Thanks for reading.

Netbeans just runs (Apache) Ant (3 MB or so if you don't include the documentation) so you can can try to see if that fits and run it from the command line. If it doesn't you'll have to run javac/java from the command line yourself.

  • Question for a class

Hey, I'm doing basic flash in a school class right now, and I
    have a question...
... there's a "vegetable term" used to describe
following/seeing the motion path an object is taking. Do any of you
    know what it is?

Not really being a pest - but I always thought that the
"proper" use of a forum is to search for the
answer forst - so...in theory, anyone asking the same
question that has been asked several times
within the past few days, should really not be awrded with
getting the extra credit, because in
reality, all these duplicate extra credit questions just help
bottleneck the forum's bandwith - an
improper use of any public forum - and, I now realize that I
    myself am being hypocritical for
replying and thus adding to the bottleneck myself.

  • Movie content will not sync with Apple TV (1st Gen)

I have some iTunes purchased movies which refuse to be sync'd with my Apple TV (1st Gen).  Storage for the ATV is external using FireCore (latest release), and I have added content since this issue began, but the same movies still will not sync.
I have tried syncing as 'Playlists' - my preferred, also ticking the 'boxes' for these items within the 'Movie List' on iTunes, finally selecting 'All Movies' - none work.
My iTunes Library lists 98 items.  Apple TV lists 90 items.  Both include iTunes Extras
This question/problem is also listed (incorrectly) under Apple TV and Photo's

I am also experiencing major sync issues with my recently purchased Apple TV which will NOT transfer any content (purchased or otherwise) over from my iMac (27" 2.66 GHz Intel i5 Core). I am running iTunes 9.03, and Apple TV OS 3.02.
All content plays on my Apple TV fine and I've had no trouble transferring purchased TV shows back to the iMac.
I was on the phone with Apple support for well over an hour about this yesterday: failed solutions included factory restores and direct iMac-ATV Ethernet connection. They decided that the Apple TV might be defective, so it was returned and exchanged. New Apple TV=same problem.
Incidentally, the first Apple TV was initially synced with a Windows XP machine running iTunes 9.01. No problems with syncing content from the PC.
I spoke with Apple support again this morning: we tried 2 factory restores, but could not get any content to sync from the iMac to ATV.
I also tried to sync from an older iMac G3 (OS X 10.4 and iTunes 9.03) with the same unsuccessful result.
Still waiting for Apple support to call back with more ideas. In the meantime, I've synced the ATV back to iTunes 9.01 running on Windows XP without any problems.
Very frustrating: there must be a major ATV sync issue that affects Macs running iTunes 9.03. I hope that Apple will address the problem and offer a fix.

  • Is there a way to keep music & playlists on a server?

We've become a multi-computer household recently, but not enough for everyone to be on their own computer, so in my house you grab any free computer when you can. I want to be able to synch up my iPod with any computer that becomes free. I've learned how to move my library to an external drive, so my guess it's no big difference if that external drive is a served one. But is there a way to have the playlists and such served as well?
Extra credit question (not iTunes): should I even bother trying to run Xserve from my 233 MHz G3?

It sounds like you issue could be bigger than just iTunes.
You said that with a limited number of computers at home, you try and
"grab a free one." You've resorted to an external HD for you iTunes library
    and Photos, right?
I think I would try moving my ENTIRE user folder to the external HD - i.e. /Users/<name>. And attaching that HD evertime I wanted to use a computer.
*WARNING!! Geek Speak! Also, I've done the following with other Unix and/or Linux systems, but not yet with OS X. *
The way to do this is by creating the same user (a new account) on all computers, being careful to name the account exactly the same on each machine, AND making sure the UID/GID is the same on every machine for this new account (use Netinfo Manager to be sure.) You will need administrator access to to this, and PLEASE do this using a different local Administrator account than the account you are trying to create.
Once that is done, attach the External HD to the first computer. Using Terminal or X11, open a shell (command prompt window,) go to /Users and blow away the new user <name> folder with "rm -r <name>". Then create a symbolic link to the External HD's user folder using "ln -s /Volumes/External HD/Users/<name> <name>". This makes the "Users/<name>" file structure on the External HD look like it lives under the target computer's Users folder.
Since OS X is basically Unix, this should make all of your applications treat your data as if it existed physically on the target computer.
In normal use, make sure that the target computer is logged into a different account when attaching the external drive - AND BEFORE you login to your
"attached" account. Then logout of your new account before Ejecting the External HD.
This should give you access to everything in your User folder on ANY computer. Just a word of caution, all computers that you'd like to enable this on should have the same OS version, and application versions - else you could be trying to access a new format file with an older application - not ussually a problem with Macs.

  • Searching for a list of photos

From my Aperture library of many tens of thousands of photos, I exported a few thousand low-resolution versions to my wife's computer. From there, she selected a few hundred of those files that she likes. I thought it would be relatively straightforward for me to now recreate an album of the high-res originals in my Aperture library based on her selections. It hasn't been.
My strategy was to create a Smart Album and search for version names from the list of files she selected. I managed to create a long comma-delimited list of the filenames she selected from my Terminal. (Like this: S7302576, S7302662, etc.) The Aperture manual said that I could text search on multiple criteria by separating with a comma. However, now that I go to try it I see my strategy does not work. The search box interprets each separate version name as an "AND" search rather than an "OR" search. So of course when I search for more than one unique version name I get zero results rather than the group I want. So now I'm back to square one.
Does anyone have a better suggestion of how I could accomplish this? Anything better than using my eyeballs to manually search thru thousands of photos to recreate her "selection"?
ps: An extra credit question: Of course my wife had to make this project doubly difficult on me because she went ahead and changed the filenames on several of the photos in her selection, so I have no good idea whatsoever as to how I'd recreate in Aperture an album based on these, other than manually searching with my eyeballs. Any ideas here?
    Many thanks for any help!

Okay, I searched a little deeper and found a solution to my problem (I guess I should have searched for "horribly tedious"):

This worked but was much more difficult to do than it should have been. Come on Apple!

  • PC Build (Many thanks to Harm's articles)

    Hello all.
For the past months I've been reading a lot about Hardware for building a new system. Actually it all started a few months back while reading Harm's excellent guide:A PC buying guide for NLE (mainly Intel)I also read  To RAID or not to RAID, that is the question and a few more of his great articles. I printed and marked it. That led me to read other forum threads, and other sites, and so I made my own list. It was a lot of work!!! I learned a lot! I'm not sure I'll do that for my next build, but anyhow I've learned a lot and I'm about to go to the computer folks as a more knowledgeable customer who knows what to buy. Thank you very much Harm Millard!
Anyhow, I'd like to hear a few opinions. Here's my plan:
A system for Production premium CS4 (will upgrade in a few years or when I feel there is a need, not right now), editing DV and possibly HD formats (not uncompressed)
    CPU: i7930
    MoBo: GigaByte GA-X58A-UD3R
    Ram: 6/9/12 GB RAM
    Win 7 pro.
    disk setup:
    1. OS &Programs  (500 GB)
    2. Backed up captured/imported media  (RAID0 2x 500 GB)
    3. Scratch (media cache, preview files). (Raid 0 2 X 500GB) exports?
    4. Projects, digital media, media created for the project, exports [(500 GB) or 1 TB?]
    5. Miscellaneous. (500 GB)
    Using these disks:
    · Samsung HD103SJ 1TB SATA 2 32MBSpinpoint F3 –
    ·   Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ,500GB,7200rpm,16 MB Cache
    GPU
    ·   nvidiaGTX-285/280/275/260/250
    Or
    ·   Nvidia9800GX2 or 8800gts
    OR
    ·   QuadroFX 580 or Quadro FX 1800
    My questions are:
    How much RAM?
    3x2GB Ram=6GB - Could that be enough?Is it true that if I want 12GB RAM I better buy a set of 12 and not 2 sets of 6? what about a set of 3X2GB RAM=6 + 3X1GB RAM= 9GB?
What do you think about my disk setup?
I planned it that way so that no crucial unrecoverable file would be on the risky raid0. I think perhaps to first export files to the raid array for speed, and afterwards, transfer to the non raid disk. Are the disk sizes right? 500 GB or 1TB for no.4 (projects, digital media and export)?
    GPU
A card that would be enough for CS4: Premiere,After Effects, Photoshop, Flash and the rest of the suite. No need for CUDA approved cards at the moment. I think open GL is relevant for After Effects. I still have to check availability and real prices on those cards. What do you recommend?
    Extra smaller questions of preference:
What's your preferences regarding an adobe keyboard vs. stickers vs. a regular keyboard?
What's your preferred monitor set up? 2 small ones or one big screen?
Is a Firewire 800 card useful for you?
Any opinions or comments would be of great value!!! Thank you all in advance!

As far as I know, CS4 does not use the GPU for much of anything... so any ATI card with enough video memory will work
nVidia and CUDA is CS5 only... read http://forums.adobe.com/message/2870496?tstart=0
For nVidia, the GTX 2xx line is "old" (the 285 is no longer made) and the GTX 470 is what is "usually" recommended now
For multiple drives in RAID, plus to allow for nVidia's power requirements if you go that route, you need at least a 1000watt power supply
My computer is described in my notes... no raid, but a GTX 285 http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/ADOBE.HTM

  • Sending mail from iPad Safari: How to choose the sender account?

In iOS 7.1 and whatever the most recent version of Safari is:
I'm on a web page and want to mail a link to the page to someone else.  I tap on the "Share" icon (the square with the arrow coming out of it) and get the overlay with the AirDrop icon, the row of Message / Mail / Twitter / etc, and a row of other stuff, and tap "Mail".  Up comes the usual mail form with an empty "To" field and a field marked "Cc/Bcc, From: [email protected]", where "[email protected]" is indeed one of my mail accounts and the one that I want to have the message sent from.  I enter my message and tap Send; the message is sent.
However (finally!), when I look at my copy of the message or the copy received by the recipient, I find that it's been sent not by [email protected], but by [email protected], which is another account I own and have set up on my iPad.  How come?  What happened to [email protected]?  For extra credit, why did Mail come up with [email protected] as the supposed sender (I have several mail accounts set up in my Mail client -- [email protected], [email protected], and several others)?  Any ideas out there about this?  Thanks!

Minor "aha": The answer to the extra credit question is that, down in Settings > Mail, there's a place to pick the Default account -- "Messages created outside of Mial will be sent from this account by default". So why isn't it?

  • Can I import a "folder tree" into an "album tree"?

I have organized a large set of photos on my PC into a nice "directory tree" or hierarchy of nested folders. The nesting structure makes sense since there is a clear hierarchical relationship amongst the photos, and there are so many of them. Viewing them is easy on my PC - I just navigate the folder structure and go into "Picture Viewer" in each folder to see all the pictures on a particlar topic.
Now, I want to do this on my Mac. Since we lack a "Picture Viewer" function in the iMac world (unless I go look for a freeware one), I am wondering if iPhoto can hold this kind of structure. Basically, albums within albums. I've tried to create a new one and move it inside an existing one and it doesn't seem to like that. Is one level the best iPhoto can do? If so, that is pathetic. The world is more complex than that. I am using iPhoto 2.0.1.
If it is possible, my extra credit question for whoever tackles this is "can I import the folder structure into iPhoto and keep the nested structure as a tree of albums?". Thanks.

iPhoto is for people who want a one-app solution for managing all their photos, preparing photo books, ordering prints, and preparing slide shows, and who are satisfied with two levels of storage hierarchy and very limited image editing options. This mostly means family snapshooters. You have a very primitive early version of iPhoto which was bundled at no cost with consumer Macs in its day. iPhoto 6 in particular offers much more organizational flexibility than previous versions, but it's by no means a professional photographer's tool.
I have nearly 100,000 photos stored on my computers. About 10,000 of them are in eight different iPhoto libraries. The best of my own work and my archives of historical photos are stored in folder hierarchies of my own design, not in iPhoto libraries, and I edit and sort them and prepare prints and presentations using them in Photoshop CS2, Adobe Bridge, GraphicConverter, ViewIt, and occasionally other apps.
