Extra RAM installed

I just installed 1 extra GB RAM into my new iMac. I did everything accordingly to the instructions in the manual.
Now, my iMac does not recognize the increase of 1 GB. I am puzzled. What should I do?

Two possibilities;
1. have you seated the RAM firmly, so thay you heasr a click when it's in?
2. the RAM itself may be bad, if it is firmly seated, send it back to the seller and ask for a different stick.

  • Extra RAM + install concerns

I've taken my iMac into an Apple approved computer repair place to get my RAM increased. At the same time the shop are installing software for me. I assumed that this would be straighforward but they requested my Admin password the other day. I asked why they couldn't do the install in Safe Mode but they insisited that they need the password.
I was reluctant to give them access to my Mac like this but couldn't really refuse it.
Am I being stupidly paranoid or should I be concerned?

It's unusual for the repair place to ask for your password, but it's not unheard of. Did they explain why? Normally, installing new software requires an admin's password so I wouldn't worry too much.

  • Extra RAM install on mac pro early 2008

    Hello,
I have purchased and installed 8GB of ram in my mac pro. In addition there was 4 slots of RAM there already. These are 4 x 1GB totalling 4GB of RAM. With the 8GB that will make 12GB in total. However my Mac Pro can only see 10GB of RAM. I have placed the original 2 slots of (2x1GB) RAM with the new 8GB of RAM on the upper riser and the two slots of 1GB on the lower. The lower is not being detected at all. This is despite me moving them around in different slots. What is the answer? I know the RAM is operational and I know the riser trays are fine, my conclusion is that I am not placing the remaining 2 G in the correct slots. Well if anyone can help. I have seen the photo on support community of where you place RAM additional RAM and it still does not recognise the lower riser RAM.

  • Problem installing extra RAM

    Hi,
I recently decided to increase my RAM. I have an iMac G5 with iSight ( Power PC ). I bought a memory module from the online Apple Store here in the UK, by clicking on the model ( under Memory ) and selecting the 1 Gb module - 533 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM ( it made no specific mention of the PC2-4200 compliancy but I assumed it was the right one given the route I followed ). It duly arrived and I installed it by following the manual. However, on checking About This Mac the extra RAM was not registering, ie still showing the original 512 Mb RAM. I called Apple Tech Support and we tried a few things like resetting PRAM etc,but no change. Eventually, I was put on to sales and arranged to retunr the module and get a refund. I got the impression by the way the conversation went that this was not the first time this had happened.
So, no extra RAM. Anyone tried to install extra RAM in an identical model? And, if so, did they get their module from Apple? I'm assuming this is nothing to do with the fact that I have a Power PC model and the current models are all Intel?
Any help and/or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

Any RAM can be faulty, and I suspect the one you got from Apple was. Go online and Google for PC2-4200 (533MHz) DDR2 SDRAM memory. Kingston is a good brand and should come with a lifetime warranty. Most RAM from sources other than Apple is cheaper as well. The RAM you bought is correct for your model, and make sure that when you instal it, you hear it click into place.

  • Installing 2x1 Gig extra Ram

    MSI P35 Neo2- FR
    2 x 1 Gig Ram
    Windows XP
    Video 8000GT  one Gig Ram
    Intel Dual Core E8500
    Bios 1.8
    Newbie --
I am thinking about installing 2 x 1 Gig extra Ram, I understand that Windows XP 32 bit, will only recognised a total of 3 Gig. Does this mean that the system only operates of 3 Gig of Ram, all be it 4 Gig of Ram is inserted?

    You could buy 2 x 512Mb modules......
You will not really see big increase in performance for day to day tasks. If you edit photos or do media work then yes you will see speed increase.
On a sidenote:- Did manage to acheive 3.5Gb seen buy XP pro, by dropping to a 64Mb graphics card.....

  • Do i need extra RAM to install adobe design standard cs5.5

I have an iMac bought mid 2010 snow leopard 10.6.8. I am looking to buy adobe creative suite design standard CS5.5, will I need extra RAM?
    I hope not!
I only really need photoshop, illustrator and indesign, so my other question is can I just install these from the package?
    Please help anyone!
    Thanks.

No, I am saying the three programs that you want to use in the suite, if you are planning on using all three programs (at the same time) then it is possible your system could slow down, then a RAM upgrade will help.  Give it a try it may work out okay.
Yes, I know how to backup separate things on to another external hard drive.  Just connect the hard drive make sure it is formatted for use as a Mac hard drive. Open disk utility and click on the hard drive at the bottom of the window it will show you the partition map scheme, it should be GUID Partition Table.  If not then you should format the hard drive but clicking the erase tab and the selecting Mac OS Extended (journaled) from the format drop down box.  If you are going to use the drive to transfer files from Mac to PC then you should select MS-DOS (FAT) the only problem with this format you will not be able to copy file larger then 4GB.  Then just open the find and drag and drop folders and files to the external hard drive.

  • Satellite U200-181 - How to add extra RAM?

    Hi
I've enjoyed my U200-181 very much, but would like to have some extra RAM in addition to 512 Mb installed by default. How can I do that?
How many SO-DIMM slots available? Are there any disassembly instructions?
    Thanks in advance

changing the memory is very easy.
    1. pull off the black strip above the keyboard (it just snaps in place)
    2. remove the 2 screws
    3. pivot keyboard forward being careful not to damage keyboard cable
    4. remove 2 screws on big metal plate on the right.
    5. remove plate to expose 2 x ddr2 200 pin sodimm slots.

  • Extra ram cause restarting problem on g7-2325dx

I have g7-2325dx with 4gb ram, and when I attach extra 4gb ddr3 sodim ram from best buy, the laptop shows error messages leading to restart. When I restart it, it will work for about 5 minutes and error message will show up again restarting the laptop. So I decided to get rid of it.  Is there anyway I can put this extra ram without causing error messages?

    Hello Chris,
As mentioned in post #2 (by Pepe) try updating your BIOS first. Btw Could you let me know the error message you were receiving? Also did you try installing the 4GB (new*) memory alone in the slots and did it boot up if you have tried?
Moreover, in order for your laptop to recognize 8GB of memory you need to have a 64Bit of operating system as 32Bit recognizes a memory of 3 - 3.5GB only.
My theory is either the 4GB module maybe defective or it maybe due to the use of generic brands. Sometimes some Generic (OEM) brand memory will not work. In case you need to test the memory, then you can test it using  memtest86 (click here).
You can send back the memory to bestbuy and instead try buying from crucial, memorystock, corsair, G skill, OCZ. Kingston.. you can find the memory in the above websites.
Following is the exact specs of the memory which your system supports - 4GB DDR3-1600 MHz, PC3-12800 SODIMM (HP MFG # - H2P64UT#ABA)
    Good Luck with the upgrade
    Best Regards,
    John

  • Windows 7 and extra ram

I want to share an interesting experience with fllow iMac users.
I bought a reconditioned mid 2010 iMac 27" a couple of months ago. It came with 4gb of Ram but I decided to mac out to 16gb with four pieces of 4gb Transcend which worked fine. I also upgraded to Lion. With this config, I was unable to install Win 7 Ultimate 64, Win XP etc. (All original full versions). I then tried to revert to Snow Leopard but failed. I was on the phone to the nice Mac folks and they suggested I lug this 27" back to a dealer here in Hong Kong which is a nightmare with all the traffic. I was preapring to do this and thought I better put the old Ram back in so the techs don't fault me for using the wrong hardware. So I replace the ram and then have one more try at reinstalling MacOSX and it worked. I then added Win 7 and the whole family of Office Software. This was going fine. I then decided to add the extra Ram and then Win 7 would not boot again - MAC OSX was working fine with all kinds of combinations of RAM. I tried to repair it and inserted the original Ram but it did not work. I am now thinking of trying to add one piece at a time and see what happens.
The thing I can't work out is why MAC OSX accept the ram and not Win 7.
I saw a lot of old posts about this but nothing current so I thought I had better put something here for folks to consider.
If you have a similar iMac and upgraded with OEM (non MAC) ram and you are running fine let me know. Perhaps Win 7 in bootcamp can only accept MAC ram or needs new drivers for OEM ram.
If you know about issues and solutions, please share.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
are the 8GB shown and used in OSX ?
Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test yet ?

  • RAM install leads to weird problems

I installed extra RAM in my iBook G4 about 2 weeks ago. Since then everything has sort of been acting up, especially Mail, Safari, and Photoshop, as they quit frequently. I also have received 4 error messages saying that OSX (the operating system, not a program) has unexpectedly quit and I must restart my computer??? Needless to say, I am freaking out.
Has anyone heard of such a thing?!
    Anything would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Nancy
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Nancy,
Your iBook is having what is known as a Kernel Panic. Bad memory can cause these symptoms and seeing that these issues started after you installed the memory it is reasonable to assume that the memory is at fault.
When you remove the memory does everything operate as it should? If it does then you will need to contact the place where you bought the module and ask for a replacement.

  • PSE 11 not recognising extra ram on an iMac

I have an iMac which had 4 gb of ram. Photoshop defaulted the usage to just under 3 gb. I installed another 8 gb of ram but PSE fails to recognise the extra ram
so I can only get it to use 3gb. If I reinstall will it recognise all my ram? Will I still have all my photos on the organiser?

    Hi smudger1939,
PSE won't recognize the extra RAM after 3072 MB. As it's the highest which a 64-bit application can use. So even if you install even another 16GB of it. I won't be able to use that one. However, it's a benefit when you are using several applications parallely. The extra RAM will be used by other applications, and will not hamper your PSE performance.
So if you want to increase the performance of PSE, reduce the history states. You can also refer to this kb article for the same:

  • Extra RAM

Hi guys, quick question about the 15" Superdrive Powerbook. Is it easy enough to install extra RAM? Would I have to go to a professional or could I install it myself? Cheers!

Here's the link to Apple's instructions on how to add extra ram:
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/pbg4/pbg415fw800mem.pdf
You may want to open it up to see what you have now....1GB may mean that you have two slots filled already....the factory 512 and another 512. If that's the case, then you'll need to remove one, or both, to add one or two 1GB cards.

  • HT1270 Where do i buy extra ram memory? and prices

I need to buy extra Ram memory for my new laptop, from 4 gb I want to go for 8 g. Where do I buy it and who installs it?
    Thanks

OWC and Crucial are the best sources for Mac compatible RAM.  Process are on their web sites.
RAM can be user installed.  Look for installation videos on the OWC web site.
Note that retina MBPs cannot have RAM upgraded.
    Ciao.

  • Is the RAM installed correctly in my 'new' Mac Pro 1,1???

Hey folks, just picked up a used Mac Pro 1,1 2x2Ghz on ebay earlier this week to replace my 2Ghz dual core G5..
Im looking at adding some more RAM to the machine and am wondering if the person I bought this from even has the ram installed correctly.
When I opened it up, the 2x2GB sticks were both in the first two slots in the bottom memory tray. Luckily I had some RAM I planned on putting in it right when I got it out of the box (and then found out my 4GB of DDR2 SDRAM doesnt work with it hehehe), which required me to go look it up online before I even plugged the thing in, so I moved the tray with the RAM in it to the upper slot like the article I read said it was supposed to be..
Now I just read the Apple support doc that pops up when you click the Upgrade Memory link in the Memory tab in System Profiler and am confused even more..
Am I supposed to have both of those FB-DIMMs on the upper tray or do I need to move one of them to first slot of the lower tray??
Also, I noticed in the installation pictures, the top tray is pictured as being installed upside down, so the RAM in both trays is right above/below one another, but both of mine are right side up..
My Mac looks like everythings fine, system profiler shows me both DIMMs in tray A and isnt complaining... Gave Logic Pro a nice run the other night and havent really run into any problems or a KP yet.. Been reinstalling my recording software like crazy and no problems yet either..
Just wanted to make sure how its really supposed to be installed in case I could possibly end up frying something down the line..

See even the first two links posted have conflicting information.. According to OWC, I should have one 2GB stick on each riser, but that second link with the memory configuration pictures, the last config for the 4GB shows both 2GB sticks on riser A (thats actually the doc I was referring to earlier that I looked at when I first got the Mac) so I figured I was ok.. None of those options show one stick on each riser..
And again in regards to the way the riser is installed.. Apples own memory upgrade doc does indeed show the top riser installed upside down so the heat sinks are facing each other.. But every actual picture Ive seen, and OWC's own installation video shows them both installed right side up.. Now that I think about it after watching the OWC video, the riser cards are keyed, so I dont see how it would fit upside down in the first place..
I dont know I guess Ill just leave it like it is. I should be getting a pair of 2GB DIMMs hopefully in another week or so when money permits so Ill have both risers in use anyways..
Maybe mine is a later 2007 version of the 1,1 or something and there was a revision done??? Wish you could tell the actual date by serial number instead of just the timeframe the model was in existence hehehe.

  • I just had more ram installed in my 2009 mac mini and now there is no audio at all.

    Hi all,
I have a late 2009 Mac Mini which I update to mavericks. This was not a great idea. The performance has been aweful since upgrading. I finally looked into adding RAM. I was told by the Genius at my local store to buy RAM on line and bring it back to the store for install. I had the Ram installed today and I am satisfied that things function much faster now.
The problem now is that the computer does not make any noise. I have speakers plugged into the headphone jack but no noise comes out. When the system boots up, there are no beeps or tones audible. The speakers were all working earlier today when I unplugged everything to take the mini to the store. I also plugged the speakers jack into my phone and they work. I was able to connect a bluetooth speaker and play music through it.
I have tried to reset the PRAM but I"m not sure if I was successful. The instructions I have read for PRAM reset say hold keys until second chime is heard. I heard no chimes at all.
I am a novice when it comes to computers but I am good at following detailed instructions.
Any help would be graetly appreciated!

Yes, this was an Apple retail location.
I made an appiontment thinking that they would sell and install the RAM. When I got there, the genius looked up the specs for my mini and said they did not sell what I needed. He explained that the mini was older and out-dated. He looked up the specs on what RAM i needed and suggested that I purchase it elsewhere and bring it back for them to install. He suggested that I purchase a new computer but I couldn't justify spending $600 or more. I am a very light user and would only be wasting money on a newer set up.
It was when I returned that I was informed (by a different tech) that Apple would not be responsible for any damage that might occur during the replacement.
I decided to proceed anyway thinking that an apple tech was less likely to do damage than I was.
After taking it in the back and swapping the chips, he brought it out, plugged it in and proceeded to open a bunch of Ram hogging apps, graphing software, and internet sites. I was happy to see that the performance was greatly improved and the spinning ball was not dominating the system.
After I hooked it back up at home and tried to play some music, I realized that there was no sound.
