Extra screen, extra cpu useage?

Hi,
My Ti's screen is on the fritz, and I've hooked an old monitor up to it so its still working.
But I was wondering if running a second monitor somehow drains the CPU, and if so, is there a way of limiting the second monitors CPU useage?
For example, running at thousands of colours, using a plain coloured/B&W background.
Maybe putting the PB to sleep and using usb mouse/keyboard. Which would tie up 2 USBs, and it only got 2!
I've tried looking at the activity monitor but I can't get much sense out of it, so I thought I'd try here and ask instead.
I use my Ti for music, so everything i can wring from it the better.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, Ananda. Your question may be too unclearly worded for anyone to answer it successfully, but I'll take a shot.
Your Powerbook's central processor and video accelerator circuitry have to work to generate each unique pixel that is displayed for you. If you had two working displays connected — one built-in and the other external — and they were in extended-desktop mode (so the images displayed on them differed) the computer would have to work harder than if the displays were in mirrored mode (each display showing exactly the same thing). I don't think there is any way you can tell the computer not to send any signal to your dead built-in display, but you can set the display mode to Mirrored and thereby reduce the number of unique pixels that are being generated. Reducing the bit depth to Thousands rather than Millions of colors would reduce the amount of VRAM needed, but I don't know whether or not it would also reduce the processing load.
Putting the computer to sleep would spare the processor by preventing you from using it at all, and therefore doesn't really seem like a solution. Adding an external keyboard and mouse would have no effect on processor loading.

  • When i exit itunes, itunes.exe jumps to 99% CPU useage and eats memory HELP

as the topic says, on my pc, when i have itunes running, and i quit it, if i watch it in my system processes tab, the CPU useage jumps to 99% and it starts to EAT my memory up. Anyone have any ideas on this? After several minutes the process finally quits itself normally, otheriwse i end up ending the process because it has made my computer come to a hault.
    Any ideas?

If it's not Kaspersky, maybe it's some other
    program.
If you do these MSCONFIG steps, is iTunes OK?
Using MSCONFIG to troubleshoot conflicts in
    Windows
Nope, still no change.. I even uninstalled Quicktime and iTunes, tried the msconfig troubleshoot again, no luck. Is it just iTunes? My only concern, is that it wasn't like this always. iTunes used to work like a dream.
Now I experience a significant lag when I try to open another application after closing iTunes. Anyway, this is just plain annoying.. but I have an iPod and most of my music is ripped in AAC, so I have to live with iTunes.

  • 2-way video, CPU Useage

I have a 1.5ghz PowerBook G4 with 1.25GB of ram, and since upgrading to tiger have found that while in a 2 way video conference, running only iChat, my CPU useage pegs to 100% iChat uses around 75% of my CPU and the other 25% is taken up by system.
    iChat processes running:
    iChat
    iChatAgent
    vcencoder
This was never a problem under Panther, I was able to video and surf Safari, or iTunes, now it is impossible to even search my iTunes library while in a video chat.
Has anyone else had this problem? could it be some kind of memory leak or bug in iChat? or just H.264 telling me that the G4 is extingct?
I have tried restarting as well as lowering bandwidth limits. Any suggestions?

I am not using any add on's listed, i am using iGlasses, which is optimized for Tiger but nwo that you bring it up, i may try removing that and seeing if it helps. My modem is an AlcTel 1000, with a Netgear router with an assigned IP network and DMZ at my computer. It then runs to a linksys hub and then to my airport express, I have however connected straight from my modem, and it does not seem to be a performance issue so I don't think that should be a factor. thanks for the help i'll give it a try later.

  • How to check CPU useage ?

    Dear Team
I have one procedure which is executing daily two times(i.e morning run and evening run)
In morning run it's executing around 150 mins and evening run executing around 25 mins.
It's happening for all procedures executing in longer run in morning.
There is NO LOCKS, I have checked LOCKS while executing morning run.
I suspects CPU usage in morining run.
Could you please tell us how to check CPU useage ? AND also each session how much ultlizing CPU.
I'm using oracle 8i database, I know it's older version but my company is using oracle 8i

  • High CPU useage when more than 30 sessions logout/login

    Hi guys,
I got this problem for a long time.
Environment : RAC 10.2.0.5 . Oracle enterprise linux 4.8. Java B2C application with dbcp and oc4j dirver.
    Server type:Dell R815. 48 cpus 128 G MEM for each node.
Here's many of web application's connect to database and when one of them is down it will restart soon and try to connect to database again. Each one will try to get 50 connections concurrently in the first time.
So , when it happens ,the cpu useage of sys% will grow to more than 70 ,80 ,90% every time.
BTW, it also happens in more than 30 logout concurrently.
Could any one tell me what's the problem is ?
    Thank you very much.

The task of creating a connection and session has to be serialised, and if you start a number of logon or logoff attempts simultaneously you can end up with a storm of activity on the relevant latches that has serious knockon effects. I am a little surprised that you're seeing this with only 30 - 50 connections, but possibly you only have a couple of CPUs.
I made some comments about this on another thread some time ago: Re: Overhead of having high value of processes (or sessions) init parameter
It's possible that you can configure the application server to limit the rate at which it tries to create or terminate connection - e.g. there may be configuration settings to say things like: "create no more than 5 at a time", "wait one second between disconnections". (Oracle has introduced some parameters relating to logoff storms - but perhaps they don't work in your version).

  • Clamd high CPU useage

I have an Intel Xserve running 10.4.11
I followed Alex's tutorials some months back and upgraded clamav, amavisd and spamassassin.
All has been working well and I have been pleased with the performance.
However I decided approx 6 weeks ago to move from using clamscan to clamd.
On and off I have been getting exceptionally high CPU useage from clamd which requires me to kill off the clamd process as everything almost grinds to a halt.
I initially put it down to using Carbon Copy Cloner at night, but it has been getting more frequent during the day to the point where mail was just being queued.
    I killed clamd again
    ran
    sudo /bin/launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.amavis.amavisd.plist
    sudo /bin/launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.amavis.amavisd.plist
but then all my incoming mail started going deferred
    so I again reloaded amavisd.plist
then ran postsuper -r ALL, to requeue all the mail. This worked for a few minutes then clamd started going high CPU again.
Also in logs I started seeing in mail.log
    Mar 25 12:30:50 fileserver postfix/smtp[147]: 502232589239: to=<[email protected]>, relay=127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1], delay=2616, status=deferred (host 127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1] said: 451 4.5.0 Error in processing, id=00791-05, virus_scan FAILED: virus_scan: ALL VIRUS SCANNERS FAILED: Clam Antivirus-clamd av-scanner FAILED: CODE(0x1801270) Too many retries to talk to /tmp/clamd (Can't connect to UNIX socket /tmp/clamd: Connection refused) at (eval 51) line 310. at (eval 51) line 511.; ClamAV-clamscan av-scanner FAILED: /usr/local/bin/clamscan DIED on signal 11 (000b) at (eval 51) line 511. (in reply to end of DATA command))
So I commented out the entry for using clamd in /etc/amavisd.conf
and rolled back to previous version of clamv.
I am now getting mail in, and although very brief high clamscan usage it is working, the queue has been cleared.
But now I am getting no logging in anything apart from one file, /var/log/asl.log.76
    this has thousands of entries
[Time 2008.03.24 22:08:47 UTC] [Facility local6] [Sender clamd] [PID 18032] [Message accept() failed: Too many open files;] [Level 3] [UID -2] [GID -2] [Host fileserver]
syslogd is also running very high CPU.
Has anyone any ideas what caused my initial problems and what I may have done now to break the logging. ???

    Thanks Alex
    will schedule downtime to upgrade.
    update
Reboot, again, of server cleared my logs problem (what a popular person I am )

  • Do i need an extra cpu to flash

Hi im currently waiting on some parts to start a new build and im wondering if ill need a supported cpu in order to flash my mobo to support my 6 core
    here is the build
    MSI NF980-G65
    Ultra LSP750 750-Watt Power Supply
    EVGA 015-P3-1482-AR GeForce GTX 480
    Seagate 1.5TB Serial ATA HD

    AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.8Ghz CPU

For that matter if it recently left the factory it might even have the latest BIOS on it. There is no way to tell until you get it. The sticker on the BIOS chip would tell you which version it has, if the last 3 digits are 130 (BIOS 1.3) then you're all ready to run with X6.

  • Blank screen after CPU upgrade for CQ60-119 series

    Hi all.
    The model:
I recently decide to upgrade my Compaq Presario CQ60-119TU purchased in 2008.
    The upgrades:
My son will use it to play some games on it. Yes I know - it only has an integrated 4500M graphics chip - but this should be fine for Spore.
Apart from changing from 2 to 4Gb of Ram I will swap out the 250Gb to a 640Gb hard drive. The CPU is also being swapped out.
Existing CPU: Intel Celeron T1600 (1M Cache, 1.66 GHz, 667 MHz FSB)
Replacement CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 (6M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)
The laptop manual states this CPU as the best spec'ed replacement CPU I can put in the laptop.
Prior to this I upgraded to the lated bios which is F.65. All was working well with the T1600 at this time.
    Problem:
After replacing the CPU and pressing the power button the laptop boots up briefly for a couple of seconds and then powers off for a couple of seconds. It reboots and stays on (CPU fan is running) but there is nothing on the screen at any time.
If I replace the old CPU and the machine boots up with the screen displaying text  so video  appears not to be the issue (well ...not broken at least)
Any suggestions on how to get this CPU to work or is the CPU defective? Thanks in advance.

Have a look here and you'll see that having the wrong mobo northbridge chipset (not compatible with the FSB of the processor) will cause the T9600 not to work. If you have the GL40 chipset forget trying to get this processor to work with your existing motherboard. If you have the GM45 chipset then your issue is probably something else.
Don't know what your chipset is? Download the free utiliy CPU-Z and run it.
FYI - The same model motherboard with the GM45 chipset is a 485219-001.

  • Numbers 09 version 2.1 pauses having high CPU useage

I was running numbers 09 original version on 10.6.8 OS without any problems.  I updated to OS X 10.10.1  and numbers stated having problems. It would start running slow only after about 30 seconds of data input.  the CPU usage would jump up to 97-98% for the numbers program.  So I then updated numbers(still on 09) to 2.1  with all the lasted patches. Still having problems. I started a brand new spreadsheet with 4 column and no functions simple data: date, 2 text fields, and a cost field in dollars.   Same slow problems.  I can take 30 seconds just to input 1 field.  I will type ahead 1-2 columns at a time, and slowly the computer will fill in the fields from the keyboard buffer.
My system is a MacBook Pro, 13" early 2011 (version 8.1) came with 4GB ram and I still have 85GB left on my hard drive.  I notice that numbers was having to swap with nothing else loaded. so I updated my system have 8GB of new ram.  Numbers no longer swaps, but still runs slow.  Right after I tested this I put in a 480GB SSD  drive in the system. The system is like greased lighting now, EXCEPT WITH NUMBERS.  Number is still exhibiting the same symptoms.  After starting numbers and adding data to just one cell,   Activity monitor shows.

    Faults 96270
    Machine calls 872945
    Unix System Calls: 87191
During the time it took me to enter the 5 pieces of previous data, numbers used up 31.14 seconds of CPU time sitting idle after only 1 data field entry.
    Thanks,
    Bob

Thank you for this very helpful tip, Hiroto and Jerrold.
Bob, I was having the exact same problem. I came here to post a question for help. I would be typing along in a cell, then suddenly Numbers would have a huge lag/delay. I would finish typing about 5 seconds before the text was showing up on screen
I even went to Genius bar thinking something was wrong. What did they do? Reinstalled Yosemite, saw the Numbers problem still persisting and said, well its probably time to update to the latest version (3.5.2).
All I needed was to be on the most recent version before the newest iWork suite came out. Thank you so much for the helpful link. After installing it, Numbers 2.3 is cruising along on my trusty 2010 8gb MBP.
    Thank you again!

  • Uneven CPU useage and revving fans...according to iStat?

    Hello All,
As with others, I've had the revving fan issues on my G5 for as long as I can remember. The other day, I installed the iStat Pro widget, which tells you information on what's being used in your computer, which fans are going what speed, temperatures, RAM useage, and such. According to iStat, whenever the fans are revving and I check, it's the fan and intake fan on 'CPU A' that's revving up to 1500-3000 rpm, whereas the ones on CPU B stay in the 300-500 range...and in terms of temperatures, CPU A is always at least 10 degrees higher than CPU B in farenhite. Is this unevenness normal in an dual processor G5? Does the second one kick in only when it's needed for heavy computing? Is GPU A being overtaxed, leading to the revving fans? And again, those randomly revving fans only seem to be the ones on CPU A. The drive bay fan seems to hover constantly at around 1000 rpm.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Dual 1.8

Hi. You could try installing Hardware Monitor
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/HardwareMonitor.html
which will give a more comprehensive picture of temps and fan speeds, etc. - and how they vary over time, and according to CPU loading. You can create probes/sensors for processor load and check that everything varies in (fairly) logical unison, at least.
Some fans and temps will be either almost unvarying or show steady progressive change, e.g. Drive Bay Fan; PCI Slot Fan (names may vary slightly in HM on your G5)
Most dual processor G5s will show some variation between processors - there are some, fairly historical, examples here
    http://macosg.com/group/viewtopic.php?t=1314&highlight=temperatures
some of which are greater than 10deg F. If, after observing the readings in HM for a while, you are still concerned, you could run the Apple Hardware Test, explained here
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/aht.html
or, if you still have AppleCare, download TechTool
    https://support.apple.com/techtooldeluxe/main?id=dl
or contact AppleCare, when you have some numbers, and see what they say.
Probably also worth checking that there is no fluff build-up in the cooling fins of the CPU heat-sinks.
No doubt you have tried changing Processor Performance to 'Highest' in System Preferences > Energy Saver > Options to reduce the Random Pointless Revving.
If you note the CPU loads in HM or use the 'Floating CPU Window' in the Window menu in Utilities > Activity Monitor, the algorithm for allocation of CPU load appears to be more sophisticated than it was in some earlier Applications that pushed one task to one specific processor.
Please post again if any of this isn't clear. Good Luck.

This is the second %100 cpu utilization message I see in less than 24 hours.
I recommend you start with the basics, and learn about about paint() repaint() logic, if you have to wonder why calling repaint() is not necessary inside of paint() you need to learn the basics first.
