  • Extra ssd instalation

Maybe have someone some info about extra ssd instalation into 2011 model 27 iMac (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-i7-3.4-27-inch-alumin um-mid-2011-thunderbolt-specs.html) by apple support service?
I live in the Nederlands and would like to ask support by apple to help improve my iMac (still with Apple Protection Plan).
Is it possible? and how much does it cost? and how much time it takes? and most importance - who I have to call for this service?
    thx for any help

Apple does not upgrade hard drives after the computer has been purchased. You'll have to go to an Apple Certified 3rd party computer repair shop to determine the cost. If an un-certified shop opens up your iMac, your AppleCare will be voided.

  • Installing ssd in imac

installing ssd in imac--how do you do it?

The Sata drive has standard cables but the other end that plugs into the logic board has standard Sata connector but the power (directly next to it) is about half the size of the one I have, it looks like its the same size as the Sata Data. nonetheless not standard. I think I saw microSATA cables but even they has an extra bit that I didn't need.

  • Extra ssd in Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 72 SFF

    Hi.
Is it possible to add a extra ssd disk in a Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 72 SFF?

Regarding memory - buy Samsung / Hynix / Crucial - these are what lenovo mainly uses. Don't worry about latency.
No point in buying GPU that needs 6 pin connector to use with E72. Please check if you really have 180W PSU or 280W PSU (presuming it is tower). If 280W, you are OK. If 180W you ll have to replace PSU for use with discrete graphics. I would suggest GF GTX 750 Ti (check the length). Make sure you can return parts if it doesn't work for you ...

  • I have an Intel Core I7 iMac with an SSD. Does TRIM run on SSDs on iMacs? I was recently told it did not run on OSX, which is a bit alarming.

TRIM is supported on Apple-branded SSDs, but not third-party aftermarked SSDs.

  • Will Apple install an HDD later in a SSD i7 iMac?

If I buy an i7 iMac with the SSD only option, and then later want to add an internal HDD (which I would assume would be quite a bit faster, being SATA, than an external HDD via either USB 2.0 or Firewire 800), will Apple do so? Is it even possible to do (space-wise) via Apple or an authorized 3rd party?

I had the same question. I wanted to buy the 27" with only the SSD installed and shove one of my own 2TB drives in the empty 3.5" slot. The Apple store near me said they wouldn't do it. So i ended up ordering it with the SSD plus a 1TB drive (I couldn't bring myself to pay an extra $150 to double the hard drive to 2TB).
Who knows, maybe you'll get another answer from your local Apple store....
    Good luck!

  • Restore from time machine to SSD/HDD iMac

    Hi,
I had to erase HDD/SDD on my 2011 iMac with both SSD and HDD drives. The system was installed on the 256 GB SSD ("Macintosh HD) and the user accounts on the much larger 2 TB HDD ("Macintosh HD 2"). I was able to restore the SSD with the system, software etc. Also one smaller account that was previously on the SSD also made the cut. However, I didn't figure out how to restore also the contents to the HDD and whenever I've tried to use the Migration Assistant I was told that there is no need to restore the user accounts that were sitting on the HDD (in fact, Migration Assistant said that there is only "1 kb" to transfer). I've then tried to manually copy the user accounts from time machine (on a Time Capsule) to the HDD but I've waited for hours (my account is roughly 1 TB big) - only to get error messages about permissions. Same story happened when I tried to log into my empty user account and tried to use time machine to restore my folders.
How is this system supposed to work in the first place? Shouldn't the user accounts on the HDD be restored 'automatically' during a restore or when using migration assistant?
Look forward to hear from you.

That seems to mean, their home folders aren't on the OSX drive, so Migration Assistant doesn't need to (or can't) transfer them.
We've asked Apple to address this, but it doesn't seem real common, and would make the Assistants rather complicated, especially for newbies.
I've tried out many things I had come to get used to from 12+ years on the Mac
Yeah, it ends up being a bit of a conundrum.  That's why it's often best to leave the home folders on the Startup drive, but put the data on the HD.
I've made a note to try to find a better workaround for your situation (the Disk Utility thing is fine, space permitting).  I tried a bunch of finagles when I wrote that page, but maybe something will turn up with a fresh start.
Retrospectively, perhaps, it was a mistake to have the time machine backup sitting on a user account specific folder on the time capsule (named after my first name) instead of the standard "Data". Both the setup assistant after flatting the drives and reinstalling 10.8 and the Migration Assistant seem to have had trouble to recognise the password protected location.
    It does complicate things.
For the future I'd loved to know what one could do to streamline this should the need arise again?
What I'm thinking of is, if you still have access to the old Mac, to create default home folders on the SSD, point the accounts to them, so they can sign on.  Then either transfer directly from the old Mac, or do a backup and transfer from it.  Log on to each user account, copy the home folder, then redirect the account to that one.  Sounds promising, but there are a couple of "gotchas" there, I think.
I'll let you know, and revise that page accordingly, if I figure something out.
Thanks for the feedback - - it gets me thinking.

You should be able to install a SSD drive without any problem. If you want to keep the actual HDD, note that you will have to use it as an external drive in an enclosure, or you can install it replacing the SuperDrive.
You can have a look for some SSDs in OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/ Also, here you have the steps to install a hard drive > http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+24-Inch+EMC+2267+Hard+Drive+Replacement/9 028/1

  • Mac mini w/ ssd or iMac w/ fusion be a better choice?

For editing, processing, & previewing tracks in Ableton and Serato Scratch Live when at home and general entertainment use (watching movies, iTunes, streaming, etc.).

I would pick the iMac because it will have a faster processor.  Plus with fusion drive you can really get a lot more space with some of the benefits of an SSD.

  • Samsung SSD for iMac 12,2

I have found this good price SSD by Samsung.

You do realize that that would Void your Warranty?

  • SSD in iMac

    Hello,
I am going to be purchasing a refurbished 2012 iMac 27" 3.4 GHz quad-core i7 with 8GB of RAM and 1TB Hard Drive. I am going to be upgrading the RAM to 32GB; though I am wondering if I am able to install a 1TB Samsung Solid State Drive within the iMac to swap out the Hard Drive? I would not be performing this on my own, I would be getting Futureshop or a proffesional company to do so. I am just wondering if this will affect the warranty with the iMac? Or if it would be better to invest in a PCIe chassis and purchase a PCIe Solid State Drive and run the iMac off that instead? If anyone has upgraded the Hard Drive with there iMac it would be great to get your suggestions. Also, if anyone has gone the PCIe Solid State Drive methiod I would love you advice/opinion on it as we'll. I feel like Hard Drives even at 7,200 RPM are a thing of the past, and I am a producer/mix engineer within the music industry and I the fusion drive and apple's hybride solid state drive is causing problems for a lot of people that use Pro Tools from Avid including myself. So if anyone could help or have suggestions it would mean a lot!
         Thanks,
               Cody

I agree with Mike Sombrio. Additionally, an external SSD boot volume, or even Apple's fusion drive (which contains a surprisingly large amount of flash storage -128 GB), would increase performance much more than maxing out your RAM.
Or if it would be better to invest in a PCIe chassis and purchase a PCIe Solid State Drive and run the iMac off that instead?
If that option is viable, yes.
I have a MBP late 2013 model, running on PCI-based flash storage. Here are my R/W speeds:

  • Replacing SSD in iMac 2011 (Not Just Another Repetitive Thread)

yo I have bought the Crucial M4 SSD 512GB [still in its box] to replace my Apple 256GB in my iMac. I've already done research into this and the temperature issues are isolated to the HDD only.
However, apparently the firmware needs to be updated to rev. 0009 from the Crucial website? Word on the internet is that there are issues with bootcamp booting up on this SSD+Firmware? Can anyone clarify if this is true?
Also, when Apple releases future firmware updates, it will undoubtedly override the Crucial rev.0009? Therefore, will Mac OS X fail to boot or will it run alright?
Any other issues that could potentially arise down the line with this Crucial SSD?
    Cheers and mucho appreciata!!
    oosk
P.S. I'd be taking to an Apple Authorized Provider to avoid voiding my warranty so I don't like to just give it a go coz, although I'd get a refund for the Crucial SSD if anything goes wrong, I'd still have to pay for their labour costs.

You'll need to work the firmware thing out with Crucial.

  • SSD Install iMac????

Hello, I just purchased a OCZ 240GB SSD VERTEX PLUS drive for my 20' iMac G5 2.16 Core 2 Duo. Im wondering if I can use my existing external hard drive that I use for Time Machine to restore all of my data to the new drive after installation? Help, not really sure where to begin.

Yes, but it's easier to make a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner - Home or SuperDuper! on an External Hard Drive and then clone back to the new Drive than it is to restore from Time Machine.

  • Add SSD to iMac 21.5-inch, Mid 2011

Hello can I add a SSD to my iMac 21.5 Min 2011 and if so what are the warranty implications, is there a step by step procedure avaiable?

In addition to Mike's response, the iMac must have the memory added in matched pairs.  That is, two side-by-side slots have to have the same size ram modules,  The over-under slots do not have to match in size but you cannot leave a slot empty.  You must have either two slots filled or four slots filled.
iMacs are even more picky than other Macs about their ram...you absolutely must use the correct speed ram in all four slots.
