Extra Stuff That Adobe Installs with Photoshop CS6

Just having gone through a test installation of Photoshop CS6 on a Windows 8 x64 virtual machine, I found it interesting that just after Photoshop CS6 went in Windows itself reported, through the Action Center, that a bunch of ''background'' programs were installed, and would I like to go into msconfig32 and disable them.  In short, even Windows thinks the stuff Adobe installs is excessive and potentially troublesome!
As I prefer AutoRuns to msconfig32, I acutally did go and disable the software which I do not need running, to keep the system lean...  It turns out that I actually AM able to disable just about every ''background'' program that Adobe installed, and Photoshop still works just fine.
Just to be clear, the only Adobe software packages I've installed on this VM are Adobe Reader and Adobe Photoshop CS6.
Here's a list of various modules I have disabled without apparent downside:
Programs started at login by entries in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run:
Adobe ARM (Adobe Reader and Acrobat Manager)
AdobeCS6ServiceManager (Adobe CS6 Service Manager)
SwitchBoard (SwitchBoard Server (32 bit)
Services started at bootup by entries in the registy key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services:
AdobeARMservice (Adobe Acrobat Updater keeps your Adobe software up to date)
SwitchBoard (Adobe SwitchBoard)
Task Scheduler Entries
\AdobeAAMUpdater-1.0-W8VMRP-NoelC (Adobe Updater Startup Utility)
In the context of a Photoshop-only installation, about the only downside I can see for disabling these things is that since the auto-updaters have been disabled, occasionally I'll need to check for updates manually (e.g., Help - Updates... in the menus, when I hear on the forums that an update has been released).
Many of these things run all the time, from bootup, whether we're using Adobe software or not.  It's no wonder people report that their systems "slow down" over time.
Adobe:  Please consider offering a ''Lean'' or ''Custom'' installation mode in which these things are optional, and provide clear descriptions of what functionality they provide.
Not everyone prefers to give up their system resources for a little extra convenience.
(and no, I'm not interested in posting this ''feature request'' over on Photoshop.com and hoping for votes)

Thanks.
I've just looked over my Windows 7 AutoRuns settings, and it's pretty much the same stuff I listed above but in slightly different places.  On this system over time I have installed multiple versions of Photoshop (Ps 6.0, Ps CS4, Ps CS5, and Ps CS6) and disabled the unneded parts as I've gone along.
Adobe programs I've disabled on Windows 7:
Programs started at login by entries in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run:
AdobeAAMUpdater-1.0 (Adobe Updater Startup Utility)
Programs started at login by entries in the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVers ion\Run:
AdobeCS4ServiceManager (Adobe CS4 Service Manager)
AdobeCS5ServiceManager (Adobe CS5 Service Manager)
Shell extensions in registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\AllFileSystemObjects\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers:
Adobe Drive CS4 (Adobe Drive Menu)
Shell extensions in registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Directory\Background\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers:
Adobe Drive CS4 (Adobe Drive Menu)
Task Scheduler Entries
\Adobe Flash Player Updater (Adobe Flash Player Update Service 11.2r202)
Services/Drivers started at bootup by entries in the registy key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services:
AdobeARMservice (Adobe Acrobat Updater keeps your Adobe software up to date)
AdobeFlashPlayerUpdateSvc (This service keeps your Adobe Flash Player installation up to date with the latest enhancements and security fixes)
SwitchBoard (Adobe Switchboard)
adfs (Adobe Drive File System Driver)
Networking layers started in registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order
AdobeDriveCS4_NP (Adobe Drive CS4 Network)
By the way, the AutoRuns tool I mentioned comes from here:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
Keep in mind I don't have the full Creative Suite, just Photoshop, and I am willing to check for updates manually.
Please understand that fooling with parts of the system like this can be touchy, and you might not want to attempt these kinds of operations unless you're familiar with Windows system management.  That said, Autoruns makes it pretty easy (just uncheck / check a box) to disable things and re-enable them.

See this link for full details on camera support in Camera Raw versions:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2012/03/raw-support-in-lightroom-and-camera-raw.ht ml
    Snip taken from link above:
You’ll also note that ACR7, available with Photoshop CS6 beta, is lagging the most in updated camera support.  This is based on when we lock down or “bake” the code for each release.   Even though ACR7 was only released last week it was “baked” before Lightroom 4.0 and Camera Raw 6.7.  Similarly, Lightroom 4.0 was finalized before Camera Raw 6.7.  We’ll get Lightroom and Camera Raw in sync soon but in the interim, here’s the latest incremental support list for each product, relative to Camera Raw 6.6 and Lightroom 3.6:
    Photoshop CS6 beta with ACR7
    Canon PowerShot S100V
    Fuji FinePix X-S1
    NOTE:
ACR7.1 will have the superset of all currently supported cameras in ACR6.7 and LR4.1 plus a few extras.

I was just curious and hunting around ACR 7.1 and Photoshop trying our the features. Also I have found that LR4 RC2 has follows ACR 7.1 as far as lens profiles go working with RAW images, so there is some consistency.
Wonder what the difference is between a RAW rendered image in ACR versus a Photoshop rendered image. Given, I could be wrong here, that Lens Correction is based on the optics of the lens, focal length, and the characteristics of the sensor, so would they not be the same in ACR and Photoshop?
I think I need to go check out a lens profiler
    Cheers

There is one reason that I may go back into the Lens Correction Filter and that might be to fine tune some of the persective tools. With a large panorama much easier to see what needs to be done rather than view seperate images, and i have done that in the past. did not come to me until after I had hit the Send Button

  • Problem with Photoshop CS6. If I open a file using Camera RAW

I have a new problem with Photoshop CS6.  If I open a file using Camera RAW, and process it as usual, CS6 doesn't want to save it the way it used to.  I don't know if I changed something by accident or not.
Here's what happens now: After opening from ACR to CS6 and completinhg all of my work, I choose "Save as..."  The save as window opens showing the file name and format.  The default format seems to be .PSD.  I use the drop down to select .jpg.  The file saves normally as a .jpg.  When I go to close the image from, I get a new prompt asking, "Save changes to Adobe Photoshop document DSC_xxxx.NEF before closing?
I looked up at the file name in the bar above the work space and noticed that it does NOT change from "DSC_xxxx.NEF" to "DSC_xxxx.jpg" after I have saved the file as a .jpg,in my webesite  but it always used to do that.  This adds a few extra steps when closing a document and it really slows me down.
In fact, I wouldn't swear to this, but I think it used to save to .jpg by default, without me specifying this.
I don't see a setting in the preferences for what to use as the default file format for saving, so I don't know where to change it back.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

The Yosemite upgrade very often damages existing Photoshop installations.  Thank Apple for that.
You need to uninstall and re-install Photoshop, then apply all the Photoshop upgrades from scratch.

  • ATI Catalyst 13.1 - Not Good with Photoshop CS6 13.0.1

I installed Catalyst 13.1 last night.
On Windows 7 x64 and Photoshop CS6 13.0.1  I still see the GPU-based color-management issue noted in this thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1093163?tstart=0
    Some workarounds:
Configure Photoshop to Basic GPU mode and wait for a Photoshop update to potentially fix it so Normal or Advanced mode can be used again.
Uninstall Catalyst 13.1 and install 12.8 specifically (which works okay with Photoshop CS6).  After testing a bit further this is probably what I'm going to do.
There may be a problem with the reporting of the VRAM size to Photoshop.  I'm not sure what's up, but I have 2GB of VRAM on my ATI 7850, and 2GB was the full amount reported to Photoshop by Catalyst 12.8.  With Catalyst 13.1 in place, however, I see the following.  Worse yet, the number seems to vary.
Also, there seems to be a problem now with the implementation of the Windows power policy - specifically the power-down of the monitors on inactivity.  They do power-down when left idle, but then they power back up again in a few moments.
I have not found a workaround for this issue yet, save for punching the actual power buttons on the monitors.
I found no speed increase or other compelling reason to upgrade to 13.1 in any case.  I think that release must be all about gaming and nothing more.
My recommendation, at least until Adobe releases an update that works around the color black-out problem, is to avoid updating to Catalyst 13.1.
    -Noel

In all seriousness, I do prefer things that work.
For 5 years or so ATI was on top of the quality heap - long enough that I bought a 4670, 5670, and just recently a 7850 card.  However, the last 6 to 8 months have been markedly worse, and unless some kind of major turnaround happens, I am starting to think that ATI is moving down the list, making way for nVidia to dominate.  I have heard that AMD in general is having financial troubles.
In my long career in software engineering, having many PCs (and having run departments full of engineers with PCs), I have seen a number of different graphics manufacturers dominate the industry at various times...  Matrox, nVidia, ATI...  Maybe it's just nVidia's time to shine again.
Assuming you are speaking of "jumping ship" at a higher level to Apple, that thought has crossed my mind, but in all seriousness I don't think you lot have much better a time of it overall.  Reference recent Mac-only problems with Photoshop licensing/activation for example.  At the moment I enjoy the greater control the PC environment gives me over what I choose to integrate together.
Perhaps it sounds as if "things are bad" for me, but they're not really.  For one thing, Catalyst 12.8 really does work pretty well.  My system goes for weeks between reboots and I rarely get application crashes.  Testing these drivers is something I need to do to keep abreast of problems my own software customers, who use my GPU-accelerated plug-ins, may encounter.  Fortunately with the newest Catalyst drivers I've found no problems with my own software, which uses the GPU differently than Photoshop (in these modern times, it's a certainty that no two applications use the GPU in quite the same way).
By the way, I am no fanatic - In addition to two desktop Dell workstations and one laptop Dell PC, I have in the family a Macbook, three iPads, and an AppleTV.  Like I said, I like things that work.

    Hi,
I can't open D7200 NEF files with Photoshop CS6.I checked the updates and there are no updates available. What do I do?
    Nitin

For the time being, shoot JPEG images. At this time there is no support for NEF files from the D7200 in any Adobe product. It was released at such a time that it wasn't included in the last Camera Raw update. And Lightroom hasn't been updated either. Consequently, there is no DNG converter available at this time. We will have to wait and see what programs will be able to accommodate the D7200 when Adobe releases updates or upgrades that support the camera.

The file was corrupted somewhere along the way (assuming it was still readable on the Macintosh).
The platforms don't matter, but you still need file transfer that doesn't corrupt files...

  • Using Mac Mini with Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom

    Hi
I use Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 4 mainly as I am a photographer. It involves both programmes live and some huge PSD files kicking around. I would be interested in hearing from any one who does similar on a high end mac mini. I am thinking of getting the high end new i7 with 16g and an SSD.
    Any good ?

While it will not deliver 'blazing fast' performance, it has tested OK with Photoshop CS6 MGE recently and it has faired decently well in some benchmark reports. Since the OP insisted Mac Mini, I think he can go for it. Also, since his work demands more 'Photo-specific' editing, I guess he should be good. Not much 3D I assume!
    Here are some references:

http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-cs6-gpu-faq.html - HD4000 has been tested with CS6 by Adobe

  • I bought a computer with Photoshop CS6 already installed, but I don't have the serial number - can I still transfer this software to a new computer?

I currently have a MackBook with Photoshop CS6 installed. This came with the laptop when I bought it on eBay, therefore, I don't have the serial number for the software. Can I still transfer the Photoshop CS6 from this laptop onto a new one?
    Thanks

    No.
Whoever sold you the laptop should have removed the software first, or gone through the proper process to transfer the license to you. Chances are that they used it to obtain an upgrade, in which case it would not even to eligible to be transferred.

  • Need  help using color checker passport with photoshop CS6

    Hello all,
I'm having an issue using the Color Checker Passport with Photoshop CS6.  Here's my configuration:
Mac Mini using OS 10.8, but very recently updated to 10.9 (Mavericks).  My problem is the same on either OS version.
    Photoshop CS6 ver 13.0.6 64 bit extended
    Adobe Camera Raw 8.4
X-Rite Color Checker Passport ver 1.0.2
Canon 70D shooting RAW in sRGB color space
NEC Multi-Sync LCD monitor calibrated with Spyder 3 Pro ver 4.0.5
Now here's the issue.  I go through the recommended workflow and generate a profile with no problem.  Then in Camera Raw (after restarting all applications) I apply the profile to a photograph and instead of getting a nice color-corrected image my image has a greenish-yellow tint to it.  It's very noticeable and I haven't been able to figure out what I'm doing wrong, if anything.  I re-calibrated the monitor, re-did the workflow with other pictures, but still get the same result.
I greatly appreciate any help or ideas on how to remedy this.  I've sent an inquiry to X-Rite via their Support Web Page, but haven't heard back from them yet.
    Thanks,
