Extract a clip from a DVD

Yeah, like the Subject says, "Extract a clip from a DVD". How can I do that? And, I'd like the subtitles to be extracted as well. It's for my presentation thing. It's irritating if I have to search for a particular scene during the presentation, so having the clips in the Powerpoint is better. But the film I'm presenting on is a foreign one, so I need the subtitles to go in the clip as well.

You can select chapters, if you just want a piece of a chapter then rip the chapter and use iMovie or Quicktime Pro to take that piece out.

    Thank you for the reply.
Although what I posted in my post numbered 2 is interesting and useful information in the Premiere Elements ripping of VOBs from DVD-VIDEO, it is not answering your issue regarding a "read only" issue and did not target your specific "read only" message. Sorry about that.
The VOBs are typically read only files on the disc.
I have never run into a "read only" issue with regard to the Premiere Elements 10 Windows 7 64 bit Add Media/"DVD Camcorder or PC DVD Drive"/Video Importer. For that matter, not with any version of Premiere Elements with this particular feature.
When are you getting this message.
    a. When you click on DVD Camcorder or PC DVD Drive after Get Media
    b. When you click on Get Media in the Video Importer or other
Do you ever get a thumbnail for the VTS_01_1.VOB in the Video Importer? Is your burner drive recognized in the Source field of the Video Importer?
If you open and explore the DVD disc, go to the VTS_01_1.VOB in the VIDEO-TS Folder, go to the VOB's properties, can you remove
the mark next to "read only" and then have the Video Importer route work for you?
Also, if you copy the  VTS_01_1.VOB from the opened DVD disc and paste it to the computer desktop and remove the "read only" marking, can you then import
the VTS_01_1.VOB into Premiere Elements with its Get Media/Files and Folders?

  • HOW TO USE CLIPS FROM A DVD???

HOW TO USE CLIPS FROM A DVD???
i know this may be a stupid and obvious question but i can't seem to figure it out.
these are not copyrited dvds... mostly home movies and old home movies put onto dvd.
    thank you... much appreciated.

Studio X has given one suggestion.
    MPEG Streamclip is another:-
    http://www.squared5.com/
It is free but your computer may not have the QT MPEG 2 Playback Component which costs $20 from Apple as a download.
If you have access to an Analogue-DV converter you can use that. Also a DV camcorder which has Analogue IN.
If you have Final Cut Pro installed, you will have the QT component.

  • Pulling Individual Clips from Commercial DVD's

Looking for good (preferably free) software that'll allow me to rip specifics clips from a DVD movie in high quality for editing with in imovie. I used to use media converter boxes but do not have that sort of gear available right now. The higher the resolution possible, the better.
    Any ideas?

I don't know any free software that will do that. Cinematize 2 will, but it costs something like $60. It works really well - you can set your in and out points anywhere on the DVD, and import the file as DV in full quality. If you then make a DVD from it, it will look as good as the original. Of couse it's not free, and it won't do copy-protected DVDs directly (you can rip them with another program, and then Cinematize will work on the videoTS file).

Just do a search for Handbrake. That will do it for you.

  • I am making a reel. How do I take clips from past DVDs Ive made and place them into Final Cut 4.0?

    Anyone answering,
I am making a reel to show businesses what kind of work I can do. I am trying to take clips from past projects I have finished and place those clips in FCXpress 4.0. How do I go about doing this? Any advice on how I can do this will be a tremendous help for me.
    Thank you for your time!!

    Hi Jeremy,
You will have to convert the DVD video to QuickTime using either Apple DV or Apple Intermediate Codec.
Most people in this forum seem to use MPEG Streamclip to do this.  I have used it a lot it and it works great.
Note that in addition to MPEG Streamclip (which is free), you will need the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component if you do not already have it on your Mac.  It is available from the Apple Online Store for $19.  This needs to be on your Mac in order for MPEG Streamclip to be able to convert the MPEG2 video that is on your DVDs.
If it were me, and the video is standard 4:3 aspect ratio, I would probably convert it to QuickTime/DV; if widescreen 16:9  then I would probably convert it to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec instead.
After converting the video, select  an appropriate FCE Easy Setup to match how you converted the video in MPEG Streamclip.  Then import the converted file(s) and edit them into a new sequence.

  • Does anyone know how to pull a clip from a dvd but make it smaller?

I have downloaded a DVD taken by another parent and need to remove clips from that for a highlight film. It downloaded as 4 separate 8 minute clips for some reason. That's fine but now I want to pull specific sections from those clips and move them to the movie I am creating. When I do this, they retain the original size of the entire clip (1.61GB) when I really need them to be smaller. I have iMovie 5.0.2. Can anyone give me some guidance?

OK so it sounds like you have the content off the DVD and onto your computer, yes? If so, which format is the footage? DV, MPEG2, etc.?
You get them into iMovie ok? If so, then you just need to shorten the clip and export or use the smaller part?
Do you know how to use iMovie in general to trim and edit clips or is this your first attempt at iMovie?

  • How do I import short 'clips' from a DVD of a commercial film into I-Movie?

    Hi, tech wizards!
I have a copy of a commercial film on a DVD. I teach this film in my class, and want to 'snip' the pertinent parts of the film from the DVD and put them into Keynote -- to do that I need to, I believe, first transfer these 'snips' to iMovie. Leaving aside copyright questions (hey, I'm just a teacher!) does anybody know how to do this?
Right now I'm just playing the movie on my apple DVD player, and trying to figure out how to 'snip' the pertinent clips, and transfer them to i-Movie clips.
    Thank you!

borrow a miniDV camcorder with analogue-in
    connect to dvd-standalone player
    import sequences
    proceed with tape as usual...
there ARE tools to import digitally/"rip" copy protected material, in most territories of western hemisphere illegal to own, to name, to use...

  • Copying clips from personal DVDs

    Greetings,
I have a MacBook Pro and am using iDVD 6, or iMovie HD 6.03.
A friend made a couple DVDs of some footage of local mountain scenery. He would like me to splice the two together and burn them to one DVD, with some still photos as an interlude between the video clips.
The clips on one DVD are quicktime files, and I can import those. But, the other DVD has files that end in .BUP and some other strange suffixes.
Do I need some sort of DVD copying software? Is it even possible to do what I'm trying? Do I need to make a video of the DVDs playing on my television to a DV recorder, then import them?
    Any advise?
    Thanks!
    Mark in Boone

my preferred tool is the combo of Apple mpeg2 plugin (29$) + Streamclip (free)
.. buy&install the component, then launch Streamclip... it allows to select scenes (=setting in/out points) from a DVD an convert'em into dv-streams..which can be edited in iMovie...

  • Extracting just audio from a dvd

I have a couple of concerts on dvd and would like to be able to burn the audio to cd. Is there anyway to do this with in the macbook itself or with freeware? When I import the dvd's using mac the ripper they import as video-ts files and vob. I'm not good with this kind of stuff so I thought that little bit of info may help. Thanks in advance.

Mac the Ripper has the option to split out the audio track and/or the video track separately. Click the D button for Demux options. I'm not sure what audio format you will get from the DVD.
You may also want to convert the audio file into an alternate format, I haven't used this utility, but you might try:
    http://ffmpegx.com/index.html
Another alternative, which requires real-time playing the DVD, is to use something like WireTap to capture audio from the Mac.

    Good luck.

  • How can I import "extracted audio" clips from iMovie project into iTunes?

  • Extracting multiple clips from large .mov file

    Hi
For some reason this summer our camcorder has amalgamated all our clips in to one large 6Gb .mov file called "Private.mov". I can't import the separate clips into iMovie straight from the SD card as previously.
I can open the file in Quicktime and open each clip separately and then export it to a separate file and then import into iMovie. This works but as there are over 300 clips will take for ever. I can open multiple clips but can't do more than 10 at a time or it gets confusing on the screen as to what has been saved etc
Is there anyway of automating this and doing this in one batch or
What has gone wrong with the camera/the file this time?
    Thanks for your help
    Sarah

why dont you import the file direct into iMove which will create individual clips from the original file

  • Copying/Burning Video Clips from Cmrl DVD w/o Chapters

I've used iDVD to play a cmrl music DVD (without Chapters or menu). I have created video clips that I'd like to copy and burn to a DVD so I can play the
individual songs captured in the video clips. I'm new to OSX and the iDVD
application. I'm willing to buy Toast or MacRipper or other if necessary. Would greatly appreciate any advice anyone would offer. Many thanks, glenn.

    Hi D
You got a miniDV tape - OK
Do You have the Camera - and does it have a FireWire port
same as: (Digital in/out - FireWire (Apple) - IEEE 1394 - i.Link (SONY) - DV Terminal (by Panasonic)
Then connect with a FW-Cable 6-4 pin to Your Mac
    Set in Play mode
    Start iDVD
Select "OneStep DVD" or "Magic Movie"
Put in a DVD-R disk when prompted.
    Sometimes later - Ready !
I use Verbatim DVD-R disks and at an as low x no: as I can get eg x4 (x16 often gives problem
    with any brand of DVDs)
OK You've got iDVD08 - Here You can force the burn speed down to x1 in pref-menu. This gives
    less errors. I do so.
You can also go via iMovie. Use iMovie HD 6. When ready with edit. Close iMovie and drop or import
Your movie into iDVD. Select block diagram and drop Your movie block into the upper most left box.
Now You'll get a self starting movie. But it will end on the theme You selected.
Selecting an as simple menu is a good advice. I use "Bruched metal"
    Select burn.

  • Extract Clips from already burned DVD?

My mom is sending me a DVD that she has just created from a VHS tape. I would love to add some clips from that DVD into the project that I am making now in iMovie. Any idea how I can extract maybe 10-20 second clips at a time from this DVD and bring it in to my project? I have about 45GB of space available on my hard drive, and I am running Mac OS 10.3.9. Thank you!

a forum Search would bring up the usual reply..
DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    VisualHub (23.32$)
Drop2DV (free, requires installation of ffmpeg parts, google for it...)
    Cinematize >60$
    Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter

  • Extracting Clips from DVD...

Hey guys, Im going to be extracting clips from a DVD to put together a highlight film for a hockey player. What software will allow me to put in a DVD, extract the clips I need, and then put it into final cut express or imovie to create a highlight film? Also, I know some of the software comes in both PRO and a regular version, which would I need?
    DVDxDV? Toast?

It's not that complex. You get the MPEG-2 component and then you never hear about it again. The only thing that is a little tricky is finding the correct options to use in Streamclip, but we will be happy to guide you through that.
It's actually quite simple. All you have to do is open the DVD files using Streamclip, and then convert them to a Quicktime format FCE can use. When you have opened them in Streamclip, you can click Command-I to get the information about the files, and with that info we can help you decide on the settings to convert to.
