Extract Albums and Tags from files and add back to Organizer

Had problem with computer and had to reload the Photoshop Elements 6 again and pictures located in my files.
When asked if I wanted to add the Tags etc I said yes. Although the pictures loaded the Organizer ok the tags and Albums did not load.
I see they are in the Documents Pictures files but don't know how to get them into the Organizer. Can some one tell me how please?

Albums are not stored in the photo files.The information is not in there.
If you can find your PSE catalog file, we can help you restore things. It is named *.psedb. You need to search your hard drive for it, and turn on the feature where Windows searches in hidden directories.
By the way, it would help if you explained the problem with your computer, and what operating system you have.

Extracting album art images to file

I have posted a few times on how to update ID3 tags, including art work. Now I have a question that is quite the opposite.
Is there a way to extract album art images from iTunes or ID3 tags to save to a separate file? I know I can do it one image at a time using the Copy from "selected item" image, but is there a way I can do the entire library easier? 1080 albums covers would take too long.

Hi there,
A script is just a program that's still in a semi-readable format. To use it you should first download it to your computer. When the time comes to execute the script just double-click on it like you would any other program.
The discussion went off at a possible tangent after your initial post so it might be useful if we're clear about exactly what it is you want to achieve. Robert's original script requires that you select a number of tracks in iTunes and then double-click on the script. When it runs it will save artwork with the same name as the track in the folder of each selected track. If you select multiple tracks from the same album then multiple images are produced. My modifed version saves the images as Folder.jpg and won't overwrite anything already there, i.e. at most one image produced per album. There was a minor error checking problem with the Robert's script which currently expects to run on iTunes 7.x but I'm guessing you'll be on 9.x by now. If you'd prefer his output format I can post an amended version. If neither script covers your needs explain exactly what it is you wish to achieve, e.g. if you want artwork for each album put into a single folder in the form *<Artist> - <Album>.<ext>* that would be quite easy to achieve.

PSE 13 "Import Keyword Tags From File" Fails

Whenever I try to do the above command, it fails. As shown in the attached figure it gets to 9%. Does anyone have any ideas on how to troubleshoot this error?

The PSE 12 Organizer and LR 5 use different file formats for exporting and importing keyword hierarchies. PSE uses XML format, while LR 5 uses a tab-separated format. If you're a programmer or technically minded, you could convert from one to the other using your favorite scripting language.
But the approach suggested by dj_paige can be modified to accomplish what you want without scripting, by copying the keyword hierarchy from the "upgraded" LR catalog that was created from your PSE catalog to your "good" LR catalog:
1. Make a manual backup of your "good" LR catalog: Lightroom Help | Back up a catalog.
2. In LR, open the catalog that you created previously by upgrading (converting) the PSE catalog -- you can usually get to that catalog by doing File > Open Recent.
3. Go to grid view in the Library by doing Window > Library followed by View > Grid (usually you're already in Library grid view, but just in case...)
4. Make sure the Keyword List panel is showing on the right by doing Window > Panels > Keyword List.
5. You should see the keyword hierarchy from your PSE catalog. If you don't, stop and post a screen shot of the entire LR screen.
6. Do Metadata > Export Keywords to export those keywords as a LR-format text file.
7. Open your "good" LR catalog by doing File > Open Recent.
8. Do Metadata > Import Keywords and select the file you exported in step 6.
9. All the keywords that were exported in step 6 will be added to the current catalog, and there will be duplicate keywords if there were already keywords of the same name in the catalog. Those new keywords will not be attached to any existing photos in the current catalog.

Is "extract tracks" and "add" and "add scaled" gone in QT version 7?

Looks like some of the functionality has been removed. Is that true?

No, they're still there. Add to Movie and Add To Selection and Scale (a slight rename) are still present under the Edit menu. Track extraction is now in the Movie Properties window.

Extracting the PICT resource from file ( DeRez )

Hi I'm trying to extract the PICT resource from a file, and I was wondering if DeRez is the right tool for the job.
I'm trying :
DeRez file -only PICT
but I get only hexadecimal output. I tried adding /Developer/Headers/FlatCarbon/SysTypes.r /Developer/Headers/FlatCarbon/Types.r but still only hex is outputed.
Pipelining it to Rez didn't do any good either.
Does anyone have an idea ? is there an easy way to convert this output to binary and have a nice pict file in the end ?

Looks like it may have written to a file called Rez.out, if you didn't use the -o option to specify one. Also might want to try echo $? afterwards to check the exit status.

At what point is it a good practice to Drop and Add back an Article for Transactional Replication?

We have transactional replication Setup in our company , a set of tables involved in replication needed to be reloaded on prod say about 12-13 Million rows .
We decided to drop the articles and add it back to replication so that a new snapshot for the specific articles can be generated and the transfer of data is fast and no breakage in the replication.
But what is the best practice or a threshold point for taking this route i.e dropping an article and adding it back ?
I mean
when Is it good to go this route i.e when the load is more than 10, 000 rows or 50.000 rows 100,000 or at what number do we start this process?

That is a function of horsepower and bandwidth.
If you do drop a table out rather than replicate a 1% change of its data, 100% of the table will need to be snapshotted which might cause havoc with users trying to access that table, and if you are running immediate sync all of the tables will need to be
resnapshotted.
With the Enterprise Edition of SQL Server you will be able to use a sync type of database_snapshot which will mean no locking, otherwise it could be painful. Initialize from a backup is also an option to save you the cost of a snapshot.

Reloaded originals, how do I get albums and books back

I installed iLife 11 and it was a nightmare. I tried to revert back using Time Machine and still had trouble. I finally had to create an empty library and import from the Originals folder.
Is there a way to retrieve my albums and old book projects? thanks

No - they are part of your iphoto library and can not be restored separately - only as a part of the entire library
The only way is to restore a good library and reconvert it - update iPhoto to 9.0.1 first and look at iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - for assistance if that still fails to properly convert

How to re-read metadata from file in Photoshop Elements 11 Organizer?

I am currently testing Lightroom 4 and Photoshop Elements 11 as a replacement for my old softwarestack due to a new DSLR.
In Lightroom I can read and write metadata directly from/to file. In Photoshop Elements Organizer I have found an option to write tags to files, but none to re-read the metadata after the files has been imported to the catalog.
I would like to use Lightroom as primary organizer for import/tagging/basic corrections. But Lightroom does not have some nifty things like face/person recognition and SmartTags, so I need the Photoshop Elements Organizer to do that. The target workflow would be:
DSLR -> Import to -> Lightroom -> tagging -> basic corrections -> write tags to file in Lightroom -> import to PSE organizer -> person recognition -> smart tags -> image edits -> write tags to files in PSE organizer ==> tags can now be re-read in Lightroom, so I get the PSE organizer changes to Lightroom.
And that is the problem: If changes were made after this workflow in Lightroom, PSE Organizer does not know that until I can re-read the metadata from the files. If I press "write tags to file" in PSE organizer all newer Lightroom tags will be overwritten with the old tags from PSE organizer.
Does anyone knows a solution for this problem? Or should I file a feature request for both programs?

You can now do a lot more in the metadata panel in PSE 11. If you select a thumbnail in Organizer and click the three small dots it will bring up a dialog for the metadata fields. To add information to many photos all at once, select all the thumbnails, click the information tab and then click the button marked Add IPTC information. You can then choose to append new information to all of the selected items or to overwrite.

Delays after editing photo and going back to organizer in Macbrook Pro

I am getting a one minute delay when I edit a photo and close out of editor to go back to organizer. I have a new macbook pro retina. Never had the problem on windows. The rest of the elements processes are very fast on this computer.

Check to see that the autoanalyzer is off (organizer prefs>media analysis) and that organizer is through generating thumbnails. That can tie things up for quite a while if you recently imported a large number of photos.

Unlink Tag from File Name

Hi,
I use iTunes on my Mac, and lots of my songs have international characters. I chose letting iTunes to organize my files, so I have folders and files with international characters as well.
When I export my playlists to m3u8 it works fine, but some softwares cannot recognize international characters on file path and thus the playlist import process will fail.
Is there any option to keep using iTunes to organize the files/folders, but without using international characters from tags? The only way I see is do NOT use itunes to organize the files - so I would have to manually keep the folder/files names without the characters that I don't want.

When you select the preference to "Keep organized..." there are no options to control how it works. You can accept it the way it works, or you can uncheck the option. Personally, I dislike how it works (and you have provided more reasons not to like it) and always keep it unchecked.

Extract single channel information from file group

Hello All,
I want to perform a repeat operation on one channel of a large number of multi-channel files.
As a simplified example lets say I want to calculate the max value in channel 1 for each file in a group. I then want to place these values in the row of a new channel in a new file. Has anyone a similar example file I could modify or suggestions on how to do this? I am working with TDMS files.

I had a very similar approach, so here's another example in case it helps. This example loops through all files in a specified directory, and if the file is a TDMS file, it loads the first channel in the file and calculates the maximum value.

If you can calculate the channel maximum value (or whatever property you're interested in tracking) during the acquisition and saving of the file, you should store that entity to a TDMS channel property. This would allow you to run queries on the property across all of your files and then very quickly load the results as a channel into the Data Portal.

Lost itunes in format need to download and add back the music on my (just purched and apps) back on newly downloaded itunes

Had backed up my iphone 3gs with itunes. But lost lost itunes due to virus/format. Have most of the music (not all) backed up by partition and external drive. Not sure how to back up apps to a local folder on the other side of the partition. Want to get itunes back and back up my phone and hopefully get my apps and purchased music back. If I download itunes and sign in and back up the phone will it put everything back or will I loose it. Have not downloaded itunes yet. Got photos off by just plugging in the iphone and using transfer wizard. Need to know also how to back up apps to a local folder. Definitely going with iclouds after this but still want to know.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
Have you failed to do this?

I might have messed up my files and now have the big exclamation mark on a lot (but not all of my iphotos) My document folder was full of photos and I tried to organize it by putting it into a separate folder but now I can't see my photos :-( please help?

Hi there, I have the same problem as I've read on some of the questions posted although the answers hasn't been much help to me with regards to the big exclamation mark on iphotos when I try to open my photos. For some reason my photo files was stored in my document folder and you can imagine how that must have looked, very unorganized. When I tried to move the photos from there to another file that is just for my photos. Now I can't open them in iphotos and although I tried to undo my mistake it still doesn't want to work.. is there any way I can find all the images on my computer and fix my problem by storing them somewhere else without damaging the files?
Please help me find all my photos as I would be shattered if I were to loose any...

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

When I create an album and then try to watch it in slideshow, I get only a black screen with a white title. No photos come up. Also when I click on an individual photo in the album, I get a white exclamation point on a black background but no big photo.

The white title comes up briefly but then no photos, only a black screen. Also when I go back to the album and click on a thumbnail, up comes a big white exclamation point on a black background instead of the enlarged photo. Any idea what's going on?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
