Extracting Music Files From Ipod

Im Ready To Get Another Ipod. But I Don't Want To Lose The Music I Didn't Purchase, That Are In My Ipod. I Already Transfered Purchases From It To My Library.
But The Majority Of The Music I Have From My Ipod Is Not Bought.
I Remember Doing The Same Thing A While Back, When I Would See The Files; ex. F00 In The Ipod Files. From There I Copy It To Another File.
But Recently My Computer Had To Be Cleaned. And When I Put My Ipod In And Check The Ipod Files... I Don't See The F00 Files, But The Music Is Still In My Ipod.
Is There Anything I Can Do To Get the "Non-Purchased" Music From My Ipod Into My Library?
Thanks For Reading

There are various programs available in order to do this...they have been mentioned on this site numerous times over the years so a quick search should find some recommended results.
Here is one such thread that gives some ideas:

Hope that helps.

You can't use iTunes to transfer music from iPod to computer unless that music was purchased from the iTunes store.
If so, see: How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod or iPhone to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Try iPodDisk. This is a program designed to transfer music from iPod to computer.

  • How do I copy my playlists (not actual music files) from iPod to iTunes

Hello all - I have two hard drives. One for my music files and one for everything else. My "everything else" hard drive crashed over the weekend. This is also where I had iTunes installed. I have all of my actual music files on the other hard drive, so thats not the problem. However, my wife, son, and myself all have iPods - each with its own "playlist". Is there a way to copy the playlist from the iPods to iTunes. I had iTunes setup to automatically update my iPods with any changes to the playlist. Id hate to have to recreate the playlists from scratch.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks for the quick response, wow, I'm gonna need to take a few days off from work having to email myself 391 times! Appreciate the help

  • Transfer music files from ipod to laptop

After a nasty virus attack I have had to re-install all the software on my laptop including itunes. Now I need to copy the music files on my iPod back to itunes. I understand that if I just sync the two I'll wipe the iPod because itunes is empty. So, the right way is .... ?? Thanks

    Hello there,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link after the Apple support document below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

  • Restoring music files from iPod

No backup made of the libraries through iTunes, but have a backup of the computer that has crashed. Can the backup files from that pc be transferred to the directories on a new computer?

    The 30GB is a decimal.
The size shown on iPod Settings-> About or thru iTunes is binary.
If you divide 30GB by 1024, those numbers are with two different numbering systems.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60955
"One more thing about iPod disk size
In iPod's About menu, the hard disk size is reported as slightly less than the technical specifications for the iPod. The same is true if you connect iPod to your computer in disk mode look at the info or properties window for the disk.
Why the difference? Most hard disk manufacturers measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 million bytes (1000 * 1000). A 4 GB disk, therefore, is one that holds 4 billion bytes. Computers, including Windows computers, Macintosh computers and iPod, measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 048 576 bytes (1024 * 1024). The difference in these two calculations is what causes the drive to appear as 3.7 GB on a computer, but actually be a 4 billion byte disk."

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • Backing up music files from 60GB iPod (directly) to an external hard drive

I'm interested in backing up all of the music that's currently stored in my iPod. First off, I suppose it would entail knowing how to locate the music files within the iPod, and then figuring out how to upload.
One step I'd also prefer to avoid is to have to copy my music onto my laptop (to iTunes) and then reroute to the external hard drive. Would it be possible to just route/copy the music directly from iPod to external hard drive? I don't think I have enough memory to house all of my 30gb worth of music all at once on my computer, so if I do end up having to go through the laptop, I'd have to download in batches.
Ultimately, I'm just trying to avoid having to download all of my music files from my CDs again. It took me two months last time, which is way too long an ordeal.
Any help/ tips/ previous threads on the topic would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Dell Inspiron   Windows XP   5G 60gb iPod, 4G 40gb iPod, 4gb iPod Nano

Senuti won't work on Windows, it's for Mac only.
Try Yamipod. This is a similar free program which works on both Mac and Windows that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
