Extracting Windows Vista Files

Hi,
I'm that dork that installed Solaris 10 OS w/o partitioning the drive and I will agree with all of you that I torqued my system. I'm going to admit now that I'm a newly minted Electrical Engineer (graduated this winter) and my GPA wasn't shabby at all, so I should have had the common sense to take the installation a little more slowly and read more up on installation before doing it. I guess it was a last minute meltdown after all the stress of completing the degree (that may be an excuse, but maybe EE != CS skills).
So here goes...
I'm trying to extract files where a Vista partition should be to back before reinstalling Vista and maybe Solaris 10 the RIGHT way.
Vista doesn't show up on the GRUB and I DIDN'T back up my files (ouch). None of the personal files I had were really crucial to anything except graduating (and I already did ), but I had some files that would be nice to keep (Soundgarden songs, maybe some project files from school that I was proud of). I've been trying to get Vista to show up but the only things on the GRUB are Solaris 10 and the Solaris safe OS. I didn't partition my hardrive before the install, but there was an automatic partition that seemed to take place when I was installing the Solaris 10 OS from DVD. At present Solaris 10 is only registering 1GB of free hard disk space (which confuses the crap out of me. If that were the result of the install, then perhaps Vista still exists, but when I pop the Vista DVD in my drive, it tells me the 140 GB space needs to be reformatted, but failed to do so when I gritted my teeth and told it to reformat that space.)
So far as I can tell there are no help files associated with Solaris at the present moment so I'm not getting to far in analyzing what's going on in the system. There is a file analyzer which seems to get good results until it gets 60% into the file structure, then seems to produce an endless tree of repeating folders.
So any advice that would get me to those files before I commence with the washing of my hard drive would be really sweet.
Thanks in advance!
Matt

If memory serves me correctly, there was a question asked in the installation process that asked me how much disk space I wanted to allocate for the Solaris 10 install. This might have had to do with some optional programs offered from the DVD though. But even though they offered some of the optional programs (and I tried to opt for some of those) the DVD told me that I didn't have enough disk space to install any of them, so I went for just the basic install.
Sorry my memory is so sketchy, I must have been halfway delusional right after the semester ended.

  • My windows vista files are corrupted

Hi, I have many problems with my laptop because my previous hard drive mess up my window files.I can't do windows restore, time will change at least once per day, I get strange noises, if i have two or more browsers up for too long, the laptop would go to blue screen and shut down and i have other issues. I try to repair my window files with a program but it didn't work. My windows vista was preinstalled in my laptop and i only made a recovery disk 8 years later. My laptop was bought in 2007. I try to use windows vista that i downloaded from a site but there were issues and the internet couldn't work. I read somewhere that labtops with preinstalled windows need to use the windows from the company that made the labtop. Is it possible that HP can sell me the same windows vista i have on my labtop?. or is it possible that HP can sell me windows 7 that can work with my labtop?. I'm afriad that my labtop would explode .  I see that HP has product recycling and If I can't get the windows recovery disk, i wish to get at least $250 for my labtop because i payed $500 something for it. Few months ago I put in a new hard drive and fan in laptop which cost about $80 something. Thanks.

Thanks.Your asking for more then they can give you will be impratical for them to do for you if you expecting more from a older system. What you should try is see if they still have REcovery media for you system to REstore your system and if not your only choice is to buy a RETAIL Windows and reinstall the system drivers from HP driver site to get it back and working. If you going back to Vista it must match what was installed not what you like to install and also there are chance your Product Key is long worn off to use as well for any Vista install which is why the REcovery Media is the best way to go if you can still get them.. Obtaining HP Recovery Discs or an HP USB Recovery Drive

  • Windows Vista File Sharing?

I never had a problem seeing my Windows Vista computer from my MacBook, but my MacBook Air cannot see it. The only way to connect to it is via "command + k" and using smb://IPADDRESS.
I don't see that the MacBook Air has windows file sharing in the network preferences either... how do I fix this? I would like it to automatically show up in my shared items within finder.

I have a MacBook Air and have a Windows Vista desktop I need to transfer some files from. I am new to Mac's and so to be honest do not have a clue how to get the files via a wireless transfer. I assume there is a way and this topic already started would be a good place to start. Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. I have tried a few things based on the help in the computer and reading around the board but no luck.

  • FireFox 4 and earlier versions will not install on my Windows Vista, 64 bit computer. The file downloads and the file extracts but I never make it to the installation wizard.

I have tried to download FireFox 4 and earlier versions from several different website, thinking the files might have gotten corrupted, and each time I download the file the exact same thing happens, the file downloads and the file gets extracted but when the extraction completes the small window dissappears and nothing else happens.
My machine is a Windows Vista 64 bit system and I've tried downloading the file with my 32 and 64 bit Internet Explorer but nothing seems to work. Can someone help me please because I would love to be able to completely delete I.E.

Hi, thanks for your Flash file info. Well you must have been doing it right, since all of your Flash files for IE and FF are correct.
The SWF plugin for FF and the SWO for IE are also correct.
You shouldn't be having any problems with Flash Player.
What you can try is to turn off the hardware acceleration feature. Go to any video, like youtube and right click on the video and click on Settings. Display Settings is where you will UN check hardware acceleration.
See if that helps. Let me know.
    Thanks,

  • I cannot transfer files from XP to Windows Vista notebook

    Hi,
I recently bought laptop with windows vista on it. My other computer has windows xp. I would like to transfer files from wndows xp to vista, when I do I am unable to open this. I also receive e mails that have excel (xls) files attached and I am unable to open them, Can anyone advise? Thanks for taking the time to read this.
    Message was edited by: angieos

How do you exactly mean: transferring files? Would you like to copy them to the machine with Vista?
And regarding the Excel (*.xls) files, you need Microsoft Excel which is in the Microsoft Office Package. That means if you have no Microsoft Office for Vista then you will need to purchase one to open and edit Excel files.

  • HT1414 I'm trying to restore from an earlier backup but my iphone only shows the most recent. I'm on Windows Vista and found the backup folder. If I delete the recent files, will it force the iPhone to backup from the next older file?  Why doesn't it show

I'm trying to recover a file and the app company said to restore from an earlier backup.  My iPhone only shows the most recent backup.  I've been searching the net for answers - I found the back up file and date sorted them (over 6mb of files).  How can I get my iPhone to restore from an earlier backup?
I am on Windows Vista so I don't have Time Machine.
I have backed up the backup folder so if I mess it up, I have it in a separate place.
Can I just delete all the files with todays date in that backup folder and have it forced to the next oldest date?
Why doesn't the iPhone show a list of the least several backups.
    Info:
    iPhone 4S
    Software version  5.1.1
Backed up to computer through iTunes (not iCloud)

As you backup the iPhone in iTunes, it overwrites the last backup. Files are kept as they are changed, so that would explain how you get different dates in your backup folder. The only backups that are saved and not overwritten are the ones done just prior to a restore. You do have the option to go back in time on a Windows computer, however depending on the last time you set a restore point in Windows, it could be back further than you are willing to go.

  • I can't eject ("files in use by another application") Windows/Vista Issue?

OK... so in the grand scheme of things, this really is NOT the end of the world... but it sure is super-annoying!! This is my first every Apple product (took a while to get on the bandwagon) and I was hoping for more stability and ease of use... I've called AppleCare several times and they can't help me figure this out... according to them it's a Windows/Vista issue (which DOES seem likely). I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Dell Dimension E521.
Here's how it goes... I plug my iPod in, which opens up iTunes and it syncs fine. I wait until the top of iTunes says "sync complete" and the face of the iPod simply says "Connected". Then I click on the "eject" button next to the iPod listing in iTunes. It pauses for a moment, then I look down and the iPod suddenly has those syncing, circular arrows, moving again and it says "Synchronizing- do not disconnect". And then a few moments later, iTunes gives me a pop-up that says " XXXX ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application"
So obviously, something else is connecting to the iPod and preventing me from ejecting it using iTunes, but I have not been able to figure out what it is!
Since it's something on my machine, I have tried the following:
    - shut down AntiVirus (TrendMicro Internet Security 2008)
    - turned off Windows Firewall
    - went through all the programs running in the task bar and turned them off
    - opened up Task Manager and turned EVERYTHING else I could see off
None of the above have made any difference. The workaround that Apple gave me was to go into Computer and then right click on the listed drive and select "Safely Remove" which usually works (the times it doesn't work, it gives a similar message saying the device was being used by another application and can't be removed, try again later). But 90% of the time it works.
I use that or the Eject option when I right click on that drive (not sure the difference, they seem to do the same thing). The workaround works, but I'd sure LOVE to get iTunes to be able to eject my iPod!!
Here's what I've done regarding this iPod and iTunes:
    - reset the iPod
    - restored the iPod
    - uninstalled and re-installed iTunes
    - selected and unselected the various things I'm syncing (currently: Music, TV Shows, Podcasts, Photos) to see if it was one of them causing the issue
NONE of the above has made any difference (and I've done each about 2-3 times, ZERO exaggeration).
I've called into AppleCare about half a dozen times now, hoping to get that one brilliant tech that knows more than the others... but no luck yet... so I thought I'd try this forum to see if one of the brilliant posters here can help me sort this out.
PLEASE- ANY help you can provide (or even just point me in the "right" direction of how to determine this) would be GREATLY appreciated!!
    Thanks so much in advance,
    SC

I am using windows Vista and having this problem also (not exactly, but iTunes gives pop-up that "files are in use"). Acting a suggestion from another answer in this thread, I clicked on Computer and selected eject...windows did warn me that the device was in use, but also gave me a CONTINUE button, which I clicked and it was ejected...had to go back to iTunes and eject the iPod there also, but it did eject

  • How do I share files from Windows Vista to a Mac with Lion OSX?

How do I share files from Windows Vista to a Mac with Lion OSX?  I'm having SO much trouble with this!  Any help would be appreciated!!!

In a finder window, under 'shared' you should be able to see the windows computer name, click on it and connect to it. I am assuming here you have sharing turned on and permissions granted on the windows computer.
Will add a note though, I have frequently accessed files from a PC on the LAN using XP, not vista.

  • I have a windows vista pc and want to use migration assistant to copy files over. From what I understand, it will copy over my user profile and settings as well. Is there anyway to just copy files?

Hey everyone, I just bought a new macbook pro 13-inch (late 2011 model) and I want to use migration assistant to copy over my photos, iTunes library, documents, etc. I know this can be done wirelessly or by connecting the two computers by Ethernet cable (windows vista pc --> macbook pro). Which is faster?
I also have heard that using migration assistant copies over the user file as well and makes it the new one on the mac. I would only like to copy over files, not user settings. How do I do this?
    Thanks!
P.S. I'm assuming that when my iTunes library is copied, the mp3 files are copied too. Could someone please confirm this?

I am using windows vista and I have 2 separate problems with my ipod touch:
    1. Itune recognizes my ipod and all the songs that are on it but not the photos.

    What am I doing wrong?

So you mean you can sync music, but not photos? How are you doing it? See if this articles helps you: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesMac/7.5/en/789x.html

That's not a problem. It is just like that! iPod Touch and iPhone cannot be used as a Storage drive. Apple removed this feature from this devices.
    Hope this helps!

Hi, my Ipod Schuffle (4 gen) dissapears from windows vista right after I execute Itunes, I've change the drive letter, erase temps in App data file, verified USB drivers, etc... Can someone guide on how to solve this?

If you want the shuffle to be always visible in Windows (outside of iTunes), you need to Enable disk use.
Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, select the Summary tab.  You should see a checkbox that says Enable disk use.  Check it and click Apply.
NOTE:  If disk use is enabled, you have to Eject the shuffle in iTunes, BEFORE you physically disconnect it.  If disk use is NOT enabled, you can disconnect the shuffle at any time, as long as iTunes is not doing something with it at that moment (such as syncing); the shuffle's light will then be blinking (to indicate DO NOT DISCONNECT).
So, unless you want to use the shuffle like a USB flash drive (carry random files on it), you may want to NOT Enable disk use.

How is this legal?   As long as you have the Product Key (from the bottom of a computer you paid for) for the corresponding version of Windows you download, it is perfectly legitimate and legal.

You shouldn't need to edit any of the files. The Windows 7 ISO is a retail, untouched version. It doesn't have a Product Key embedded into it.
You should be able to use a Windows 7 Product Key from the label on the bottom of the computer with no issues. The installation will ask you for a Windows 7 Product Key. The only exception would be if the Product Key were in use on a different computer. From my understanding, as long as it is not already in use, it should activate.
Please let me know if you have any questions on that
