Extreme 2008-003 Pulled Update - Recommended Action for its Victims?

Yesterday I reported that I was one of those who installed the Update 2008-003 before it was pulled:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8335614#8335614
I now realize that my early personal experience with this update is not as benign as originally stated. Throughout the day yesterday the AirPort Extreme connection to ActionTec DSL modem dropped inexplicably three or four times --- re-established by restarting iMac.
This morning, the connection could not be established after multiple restarts. But, oddly, connection to AirportExpress was made!?
I then attempt to reboot from a full backup (about a week old), and a solid connection was established. After an hour or so I again attempted to boot from Mac HD --- and it worked this time!
I fully expect continued erratic performance of AirPort Extreme throughout the day.
My question is what is the best course of action at this juncture?
(1) Restore from Time Machine
(2) Restore from Full Backup (SuperDuper)
(3) Leave things as they currently exist and wait for Apple to sort out this mess?

If Airport firmware was changed this may not help
(2) Restore from Full Backup (SuperDuper)
Ditto
(3) Leave things as they currently exist and wait for Apple to sort out this mess?
Best course, IMHO
Keith
I am not sure what machines were affected by this "update" but my 15" MBP seems to have survived without any obvious ramifications.
If anyone has used TM or SuperDuper! or CCC to revert to previous system, let us know if that fixed any issues.

  • Using Airport Extreme 802.11n to update automatic IP for Dynamic DNS ???

    Hello,
does anybody now if it is possible to use Airport to forward the recent IP address to DynDNS.com ? As most routers are able to forward the IP to a provider like DynDns eachtime when IP address is renewed . I have found at the Airport Configruation Utility in the manual configuration the following fields: Button Airport -> Button "Basic Station" next to the field Airport extreme name the Button "config" -> a new pop up opens and at the bottom I am able to activate "dynamic global hostname" and to fill in the user ID + password. But the IP address is not updated at DYNDNS.com
Has anybody experience with Dynamic DNS and Airport extreme ?
    Thanks in advance
    Stephan

You may want to try using the DynDNS update client for Macintosh. http://www.dyndns.com/support/clients/mac.html

  • Airport extreme 2008-003

Good evening (from Italy). I'm looking for a solution to remove the update in the subject. I need to work with my MBP and network it's totally blown up.
I cannot rollback with a backup in this case, 'cause too many data of my work allover hdd are changed, since I did the update, and I don't know if I can find them all, for a manual backup. I used just the software upgrade tool belivin' that updates were always sure... , but I was wrong.
Please help. And thanks in advance.

Make sure you do these in order (know you have already tried, but let's do it again):
    1. Repair Permissions - /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app. Start Disk Utility, select your HD and click on Repair Permissions. When finished, quit Disk Utility and restart.
Open System Profiler/Network/AirPort Card - do you see your card and its details? If no card is showing then you need to take your MBP to an Apple Authorised Service Centre.
    If the card is present:
    2. Copy the following System Preferences Files to your Desktop (HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration):
    - com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    - com.apple.network.identification.plist
    - NetworkInterfaces.plist
    - preferences.plist
    3. Delete the above preference files from HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration - you will require your administrator password. Shut down the computer.
    4. Safe Mode Startup - hold down the Shift-key at startup until you see the login screen. When logged-in, then go to System Preferences/Network/AirPort - click on the 'Network Name:' roll-button, select 'Join Other Network...', enter 'Network Name and select the security type you are using, and finally, enter your Password and click 'Join'.
    5. Click 'Apply', then exit System Preferences and shutdown.
    6. Startup normally and check your AirPort preferences.
Your System Preferences will be rebuilt - if everything works OK then delete the preference files you copied to your Desktop.
Did you use Software Update to install 'AirPortExtremeUpdate2008003.dmg', or did you download it and then install. If the latter, try installing the update again after doing a 'Repair Permissions'.

  • Update CSS stylesheet for ITS Mobile solution

    Dear all,
for a mobile bar code scanner solution i generated the HTML templates for the LM transactions and published a new ITSMOBILE service. So far everything is working finde.
To fix some smaller style issues on the mobile device i added the parameter ~ITSMOBILECSSINCLUDE and uploaded the corresponding stylesheet in SE80 as a MIME object for the service.
The stylesheet now gets triggered. But I want to do some fine tuning, therefore i changed the stylesheet, saved it and published it and the complete service.
But know the changes visible on the screen. They are visible in SE80 but when i access the stylesheet directly (/sap/public/bc/its/mimes/barcodeservice/99/mystylesheet.css) I only see the version I have uploaded initially.
Is this a bug? Do i have to do anything else after I have published the change file? Any ideas for an workaround?
    Thx in advance
    Florian

I thx for your reply. I solved my problem by deleting the cache in SMICM.
    Best regards
    Florian

  • Security Update 2008-003 Intel not installing

I installed MacOS 10.5.3 update successully but the security update2008-003 did not work. I downloaded the intel update and it starts ok until the HD chosen to be installed apperars. Even the Macintosh HD apperas with the red and X circle. What could have happened? Is there an error with the installer?

Security Update 2008-003 is included in 10.5.3. If you have 10.5.3 installed then you have all the contents of the 2008-003 security update already.

  • [svn] 2773: Update excludes list for JBoss and WebSphere.

    Revision: 2773

    Date: 2008-08-07 04:35:10 -0700 (Thu, 07 Aug 2008)
    Log Message:
Update excludes list for JBoss and WebSphere.
    Modified Paths:
    blazeds/trunk/qa/features/excludes.properties

JGroups is an open source project that allows processes to send messages to one another. LiveCycle data services uses it for its messaging implementation (basically it configures the server to multicast messages to all the listening clients...even in a clustered environment across different LAN/WAN).
In most cases the default configuration will work fine, the problem is that if you are running a firewall on the server (or your local machine...i.e. windows firewall) the ports that JGroups uses for its communications can be blocked. In a local environment its easy enough to disable windows firewall and bounce your server to get things working.
In a production environment you need to open the ports that JGroups is using. These settings are in the Global Administration settings (as mentioned by WorkspaceUser above). If you export it and look at the JChannelConnectionProperties you'll see the ports its using and you can set your firewall to allow communication to those ports.

  • AirPort Extreme Update 2008-003 disables airport

After working perfectly since I received my Macbook Pro on Friday, I was notified yesterday there was a Software Update called "AirPort Extreme Update 2008-003". Not thinking twice, I installed it while I was at work, then when I went home and rebooted, I could no longer turn on my airport (just the spinning beach ball). Then in network preferences when trying to turn airport on, it freezes up the system. I then have to force quit and force the machine to power off by holding down the power button. The only way I have been able to get airport to come back on is by creating a new location in network preferences called "Home". If it gets switched back to "Automatic" I can no longer turn Airport on anymore. Also, even though I can turn it on using the new location, I am no longer able to connect to the wifi network at work at all, and it fails to see as many wireless networks in our building as it did before.
I realize now after reading at several blogs online that this update was almost immediately pulled and is no longer available. Is there any way to undo or revert back to a previous state before this update or do I have to wait for a fix. Or, if necessary, should I use the DVD that came with my system to totally do a system restore of my machine?
    Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Uninstall Airport extreme 2008-004 update and go back to previous version

    Hello
This morning I installed the airport extreme 2008-004 update. Since then, I have not been able to access the internet when my VPN (Check Point) is active. I can access the internet if I "stop" the VPN. I use a Netgear WNR834M router and I have not had problems between this router and the AirBook before. Even when I am unable to access the internet, it appears that I am connected to the wireless network. I have stopped and started modem, router, and Mac several times, to no avail.
I had a good deal of trouble with a VPN before, and rather than attempting to fix this, I would like to just uninstall the update and restore what I had before. Is there an easy way to do this?
    Thank you very much

    Warren,
If you haven't yet, try these suggestions. They have worked for others.
*_Slow & Dropped Internet Connection After Airport Update_*
The suggestions below have recently helped others after a System or Airport update. Consider each topic separately, If one does not resolve your issue, move on to the next one.
    *Reset/Change DNS Settings*
    Launch Airport Utility.
    Select Airport device on left.
    Click "Manual Setup".
Select "Internet" from the toolbar above.
What's listed for "DNS Server(s):"? Try putting in these servers from OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click "Update".
Next, on all Macs affected, launch System Prefs --> Network Prefs.
Select the service you usually connect with on the left (Airport or Ethernet).
    Then click, "Advanced...".
    Click the "DNS" tab.
What's listed for "DNS Server(s):"? Usually "10.0.1.1" will be listed first in gray. This refers back to the settings in the Airport Utility.
Nevertheless, it doesn't hurt to add the DNS servers noted above here as well.
    Click "OK" then click "Apply".
    Finally, reboot your Mac.
Now see if you have internet access all around.
    *Reset Airport Service*
Launch System Preferences --> Network Preferences.
Highlight the Airport Service on the left.
Click the Action menu (tiny gear button) in the lower left.
    Select "Make Service Inactive".
    Then select "Make Service Active".
    Click "Apply".
    *Delete & Add Airport Service*
Launch System Preferences --> Network Preferences.
Highlight the Airport Service on the left.
Click the “-” button in the lower left to remove the Airport Service.
Next, click the “+” button and add an Airport Service.
    Click “Apply”.
Note: Removing the AirPort interface resets your preferred AirPort networks.  You will need to add preferred networks again.
    *Reset Network/Airport Settings*
    1. Go to Macintosh HD --> Library --> Preferences --> SystemConfiguration Folder
Drag the following files to the desktop:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    com.apple.network.identification.plist
    NetworkInterfaces.plist
    preferences.plist
    Restart your Mac.
    Go System Preferences --> Network.
From the “Location” menu select “Edit Locations”.
Click the “+” button and name it “Home” or “My Network”.
    Click “Done”.
Highlight “Airport” on the left, and verify that your network appears beside “Network Name”.
    Click “Apply”.
    Click “Advanced…”.
Click the “Airport” tab, and add your network to the “Preferred Networks”list.
Click “OK” and then click “Apply” once more.
Now see if your connectivity issues are resolved. Later you can Trash the .plist files you dragged to the Desktop.
    *Archive & Install*
As a last resort, an Archive & Install using your Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) installation DVD will usually resolve this issue. Then use Software Update to bring your system up to date. It appears that reapplying the recent updates in this condition, does not cause the problems to return.
Let us know if any of the above suggestions helped to resolve your connectivity issues.
    Cheers!

  • What next.... (Security Update 2008-003)

    Greetings all,
I know that there are numerous threads here already about this problem that many of us seem to be having. Mine is similar so I will try to explain with as much detail as I can. Please read the whole post because I have followed most if not all of the advice I've found in replies to this topic and nothing has worked thus far. My desktop (Gigabit Ethernet G4 running 10.4.11) is the unit with the problems, my laptop (15" Powerbook running 10.4) is running fine and has pulled field medic duty in trying to fix this. I've been able to successfully Target Disk the desktop from the laptop and all my files are still there, the bugger just won't finish starting up. I explain in detail below.
So the other night I downloaded and installed the Security Update 2008-003 via the Software Update pane. All went well, no error messages or hiccups. I restarted the computer as necessary and it gets all the way to the end of the blue progress bar on the "Starting up Mac OS..." stage and hangs. I waited a long time and it still just hung. Sound familiar?
I know many people have said that this is due to pre-existing problems or messy systems but I run maintenance on mine fairly regularly and it was working strong before the update.
Here's what I have tried so far:
    • started in safe mode or at least I tried to, i held shift but it still got to the same place and hung up so maybe I didn't hold it at the right time? I held it after the chime until I saw the grey apple screen with the progress clock
    • put my desktop into Target Disk mode and connected to my laptop, I ran Disk Utility and repaired the disk until everything came out clean. Repair/Verify Permissions, however, was grayed out (more on this in a second).
    • Ran Disk Warrior from the laptop on the Target Disk desktop drive. It recognized it and attempted to run a clean up but I kept getting an error message saying it is too severely damaged and can't be repaired. This even after I had run Disk Utility with a clean bill of health.
    • I tried resetting the PRAM several times but it didn't help.
    • started in single-user mode and ran "fsck -fy" per some unix commands I found on the forums. it came back clean numerous times. I also tried running repair permissions via the same screen but the cursor would just jump down to a blank line and nothing I input would do anything.
    • held option during startup to bring up the startup disk selection screen. It loaded but the little stopwatch just spun and wouldn't let me select my second hard-drive as my startup. That would've solved a ton of problems right there as the second drive never got the update and I've used that to fix the first in the past.
    • with the desktop targeted I ran terminal in the laptop and tried the unix repair permissions command from there but it gave me some jargon about the command and a line about ownership of the drive and wouldn't do it.
    • finally, I put my desktop into target disk mode, and started the laptop from the OS installer CD. I ran Disk Utility from the laptop on the desktop and I was able to do both Repair Disk AND Repair Permissions. The disk was fine, the permissions had some fixes but came back clean on a second pass. I figured this would fix it all but, alas, no dice. Still hanging at the end of "Starting Mac OS...".
Is there something I am missing or anything else I can try? As I said all the files and info are still there because I can get to them just fine via the Target Disk mode, it just won't finish loading the OS. My other issue is that I have a second hard drive in the desktop and the Target Disk mode only mounts the primary drive. The second drive is my backup drive and I need to be able to access it.
Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated folks, thanks so much!!

    Update:
I also looked in the system.log file and found this repeated numerous times at the end:
launchd: /system/library/coreservices/loginwindow.app/contents/macos/loginwindow port /dev/console exited abnormally: segmentation fault
    Below it, this:
launchd: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping
Interspersed among the lines about the loginwindow were other inputs, most notably these:
The following startupitems failed to properly start:
    /library/startupitems/symdcinit
    -execution of startup script failed
    system/library/startupitems/fibrechannel
    -execution of startup script failed
Again, are any of these files ones that can be trashed and will be rebuilt by the OS when it starts? Or can copies be dragged from my healthy system to the failing one to overwrite them?
IF you are fully backed up AND the two systems are running the same version of the OS on the same architecture (e.g. both PPC or both Intel) then you could try dragging items from the laptop to replace. Alternatively, you could use Pacifist to extract them from the install disk or from a later OS update where available.
I would create a directory /Library/StartupItems.disabled and drag the contents of /Library/StartupItems into that folder. Nothing there is critical so disable all of that stuff for now. I would do the same with /Library/LaunchDaemons.disabled and /Library/LaunchAgents.disabled if applicable. Then do the same with any corresponding folders in your user Library.
You'll still need to replace the FibreChannel item because that's system and presumably important.
I'm thinking, though, that the number of errors you're seeing probably indicates an archive and install would be the best option.

Scrolling going in delayed/slow/jerky 'waves' motion (not smooth & fast), Right-click box very delayed/hangs in coming up, Text typing lagging/intermittent, activity extremely slow/delayed when pointing mouse over anything, changing from tab to tap extremely slow. Bascially EVERYTHING has become sooo slow, delayed, lagging etc. I have tried ALL possible checks (extensions, add-ons, plug-ins, download history, cache, cookies) & viewed nearly ALL the FF help sites. Is this a sudden/recent bug?? It doesnt only happen with Facebook, but EVERY window I open!!

I've personally not seen this behaviour since Firefox version 2. It however re-appeared for me in 3.6.6 and 3.6.7 (current) and it's bloody awful. Makes everything I do take 50% longer ..... great for efficiency in the modern world.
This 3.6 branch is so riddle with flaws which seem never to be fixed. Each fix / update brings with it more problems ... worst of all I see version 4 is already in development but they cannot even get 3.6 right ??? WTF ????
Mozilla must stop chasing version numbers as has become the trend in the software world. Fix an existing version to perfection then start working on a new branch of the product.

  • AirPort 2008-003 update: 802.1X connection broken

At work I use a WPA Enterprise secured WLAN with PEAP authentication - this configuration doesn't work anymore after the AirPort 2008-003 update. (Maybe that's why Apple pulled it back.)
My WPA2 Personal network at home still works fine.

You might try this. Drag the following three items to the Desktop:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

If any one of them doesn't exist then drag those that do to the Desktop. Restart the computer. You will need to open Network preferences and reconfigure your settings so be sure to note them down in advance.
No guarantee, but some have reported this fixed the problem with the update.

  • Mouse probs in 10.4.11 ppc since Security Update 2008-003

I have the Logitech S530 mac wireless keyboard/mouse combo running on my Cube with 10.4.11. Its worked perfectly right up until I installed the latest updates:
2008-05-28 20:34:40 -0500: Installed "Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update" (2.1)
    2008-05-28 20:37:29 -0500: Installed "Security Update 2008-003 (PowerPC)" (1.0)
Now the mouse rapidly becomes unresponsive, it also will suddenly start acting like you "grabbed" something and start dragging it around the screen, moving the mouse to a spot and clicking in say a web form or something and clicking will not result in the cursor appearing in the box. I wiggle my mouse like mad a few times and it will suddenly start to work again for a few, then out of the blue it will start acting up again.
I tried reinstalling the Logitech Control Center, and thought it had fixed the problem, but it started up again a little while later.
Anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on how I can fix this problem?

Have you tried the usual Disk Utility maintenance?

after beginning instalation of security update 2008-003, at the "optimizing system stage", the computer started heating up (to extreme levels) and became stuck completely - except entering and leaving sleep mode when i shut the lid, there is no response i can get.
what can be the reason of this and what can i do about this?

    Welcome to the Forums.
Did you repair disk and permissions, before doing the Security Update?... If not.
Boot from Install Disc, and select your language. From the Menu Bar Select Utilities>Disk Utility
After selecting your Mac OS X Repair Disk and reboot.
Then, from Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility, Repair Disk Permissions.

Thanks for the quick response Nikhil.
Our SPF 2010 server is relatively small to many setups I am sure. The list with the issue only has 4456 items and there are a few associated lists, eg lookups, Tasks, etc see below for count.
    Site Lists
Engagements = 4456 (Errors on this list, primary list for activity)
Tasks = 7711  (All workflow tasks from all site lists)
Clients = 4396  (Lookup from Engagements, Tslips, etc)
Workflow History = 584930 (I periodically run a cleanup on this and try to keep it under 400k)
Tslips = 3522 (Engagements list can create items here, but overall not much interaction between lists)
A few other lists that are used by workflows to lookup associations that are fairly static and under 50 items, eg "Parters Admin" used to lookup a partners executive admin to assign a task.
