Extreme & Airtunes

Ok, I know this should be easy, and I've searched but can't quite figure it out.
I changed to an Extreme from my Linksys router this weekend. Setup went fast and easy. Mac's, PC's and laptops all work great. But, for some reason, the base does not see the airport express base station (airtunes). I've read all the articles that are even close in the knowledge base but can't get the extreme to see the express. It just sits there and flashes it's annoying little orange light ):
I've done a hard reset on the express. Any idea's would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Joe

Let's double-check your AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) settings ...
AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - iTunes Setup
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
o Set time automatically: (unchecked)
o Allow configuration over Ethernet WAN port: (checked)
AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Network Name: <existing AEBSn's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
Music
o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o Enable AirTunes over Ethernet: (optional)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX

Does Airtunes ONLY come with Airport Express and Extreme? I have an old Airport card (not extreme) in my eMac and I listen to internet radio constantly. For the holiday's I'd love to listen to the Xmas internet radio stations over our stereo surround-sound speakers through our receiver in the livingroom and was just doing some reading about Airtunes, which sounds awesome. I just didn't want to go out and buy a whole new router (we use a wireless Belkin router) just to listen to it. OR..is there another way to send sound through our receiver? I DO have an iBook that I could hook up to the TV or the stereo.
    Thanks,
    H

Airport Express comes with a cable which connects to one of the inputs on your stereo receiver. It could be an unused one such as for a VCR ... or whatever you have available.
Then you need to configure your iMac to communicate wirelessly with the Airport Express base station using the Airport Setup Assistant. If you have an existing Airport network you define the Aiport Express as a client of that network.
I'd like to have my new iMac stream music from iTunes
directly to the living room stereo. This iMac is good
to go on that part. I'm clueless how to get the music
from the Express/Extreme/Airtunes to the stereo. What
to you use/do on the stereo end to make it work?

  • What is 802.11a/b/g/n mean?

I am interested in buying an airport extreme but Im not sure that it will work with my fathers emachine because I dont know if his has 802.11a/b/g/n.

See Note 3 at the bottom of this page for Apple's 'n' capable computers:
    http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/specs.html
"The 802.11n Enabler for Mac works with the following computers: MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo; MacBook with Intel Core 2 Duo; Mac Pro with AirPort Extreme option; iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo (except the 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac)."
    iMac Core Duo2   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   AirPort Extreme + AirTunes. 802.11n and 802.11b/g

  • How-to: Using Bonjour Browser as a troubleshooting tool

AirPort Extreme uses Bonjour (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bonjour/) to facilitate features like disk sharing and printing. You can use a Bonjour browser to see what features are active on your network.
    How does this help?
Many questons on the forum are similar to 'Where's my shared disk/iTunes/printer/airport?' A Bonjour browser can tell you if your disk/iTunes/printer/airport is present in your network. If the feature is not present focus on the device/feature. If the feature is present focus on your client computer.
    1) Download a Bonjour browser, e.g. I use this browser: 'Bonjour Browser' (http://www.tildesoft.com/Programs.html)
    2) Install and run Bonjour Browser
    3) You should see a hierarchy of features under 'local'. There maybe other domains in addition to local.
Here's some examples of Bonjour-advertised features:
Shared disks appear under 'adisk.tcp.' Under this heading you can see all your AirPorts with the disks you nominated for sharing, with IP addresses.
The base station itself is under 'airport.tcp.' Under this entry are all the base stations you have (b/g and n, AirPort Express etc ...)
The 'AirTunes' entry tells you which IP address is your AirTunes/AirPort Express device.
You can also see any file sharing, SSH, iTunes music sharing etc .. that may be offered by your client computers. I see my IP printer under 'Printer PDL Data Stream).
    Hope this helps your troubleshooting.

    Hi gino,
    Select -
where text CP 'Manufacturer' is right answer. If you get error on that statment, you would probably check the field that is used in where clause.
or  try the following statement. Hope this will helps.
    select -
    where text = '%manufacturer%'.
I think it will then become a performance issue. Explain it clearly that what exactly you want and where is this being used.
Do you want some thing like search help? Example: customer number search from any customer field. If so try to create a search help and add the same to your custom field.

  • Airtunes  with new airport extreme

i have a new airport extreme. my airtunes no longer shows up. how do i reconfigure the 2 express base stations to play airtunes?

I figured it out. I had to do a hard reset on the airpot express and renew the settings.

  • Airtune Over Ethernet  with Time Capsule or Airport Extreme

Can the previous generation Time Capsule or Airport Extreme bridge an ethernet client to an Airtunes network?
Current Setup: I have an aluminum iMac wired to my Time Capsule; currently, I use the aluminum as a music server by connecting to several Airport Express clients over the the iMac's built-in Airport for Airtunes support.
Problem: I have 3-802.11g clients dragging my wifi network. I would like to dedicate the iMac's internal network to the g-clients so I don't have to use compatibility mode for my n-network. However, I will lose Airtunes speaker support when I use internet sharing over the built-in Airport. Airtunes does not appear to support the Time Capsule ethernet client.
    Nodes:
    -AE 802.11g (Airtunes only)
-AE 802.11n (Airtunes and USB printer)
-1st gen Time Capsule (Internet gateway, "creating network" 802.11 g/n,
-iMac 8,1 (Music server via internal wifi, wired TC client)
    -Macbook 4,1 (wifi client)
    -iPhone
-Canon MP620 (USB to iMac, wifi to Macbook)

    Further to Bob's comments..
A Gen1 TC will be using marvel wireless chip and your 2008 and 2010 Macbook will use atheros and/or broadcom cards.. Just open your system profiler and look for info on the airport. We find the mixture of wireless chipsets especially older draft N and later N products can give very varied results.
The very fact you are linking at 270 and not 300mbps shows some reduction from theoretical max speed.. and really to get over 100mbps with any wireless you need perfect setup.. matched wireless chips etc.
Do a test uploading and downloading a file to the TC to see if the LAN speed is better than internet speed.
In reality I think you are doing especially well.. we see loads of people complaining about slow internet here who are getting less than 10% of the speed they get direct when routed through the TC. And on most occasions the limit in speed is not really going to affect what you do, as the real links to the internet are not that fast.

  • AirPort Extreme + AirPort Express for AirTunes

    Hi there,
I've just unpacked my new AP Extreme station (v7.3.2) as a replacement for the AP Express (v6.3) and it works just fine. What I now have been trying for some hours is to set up AP Express for AirTunes, but it doesn't work.
I just want to add AP Express to the wireless network created via the AP Extreme not to extend the network, but simply use AirTunes.
I tried the guided set-up via the Airport Utility, also the manual one. I tried to create a closed and normal network. The problem is always the same: After the update of the AP Express station, the station can't be found and needs a hard reset to start just another try for a set-up...only the AP Extreme shows up.
    Any idea?
    Thanks in advance.

...I solved it myself this morning at about 1.00 AM, but this page was down, so I couldn't post my message earlier...sometimes its easier than you think: I just forgot to enter the MAC address of the AirPort Express under the "Access" menu of he AirPort Extreme. That was the reason why the Express couldn't join the network created by he Extreme. The rest is as Nee Kun stated above with one difference: Once the Express is plugged in, I of course see/access (frankly you cannot see it, because its "closed"=invisible) only one network, but in my AirPort Utility I can see both, Extreme and Express

  • Extreme, express, airtunes & no airport card?

I have a new Mac Pro on the way without an airport card. It will be connected to an Airport Extreme. My stereo is connected to an Airport Express for airtunes, currently via my G4 (with an airport card). Is it possible to connect to the Express via the Extreme on the Pro using Airtunes without an airport card?

Is it possible to connect to the Express via the Extreme on the Pro using Airtunes without an airport card?
Yes. The Mac Pro would connect via Ethernet to the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) which would pass the signal wirelessly to the AirPort Express (AX).

  • Airtunes kills AP Extreme (dual antenna) internet connection

I've got a brand spanking nex Airport Extreme base station connected to a cable modem.
In the living room, I've got an Airport Express which is connected to my sound system and to the base station over WiFi.
Everything works fine untill I stream music over Airtunes to the Aiport Express from any Mac on the (wired) network. The internet connection drops and can't be restored but by restarting the base station.
Anybody else seen this behavior and knows a fix?
Would downgrading the firmware to an earlier verions work for this base station?

Ok, so switching to Parallels cured my dropped internet connection problem.
Now, however, I'm back to the problem I had before I bought the Airport Extreme base station: streaming music to the Airport Express station (Airtunes) results in stuttering, intermittent audio from the Mac Pro. Gah! Can't anything just work like it should?

  • Airport express (g), extreme (n), and airtunes

I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere - I've read several threads here and on other support sites, and must admit I'm confused by what seems to be people's conflicting experiences of this set up.
I have a new Time Capsule with airport extreme n. This is my base station. I also have an old airport express g, which had previously been my base station and was also my airtunes connection to my hi-fi speakers.
I now want to connect my express g to the extreme n base station, so that I can continue to stream airtunes to my speakers.
How do I do this, without compromising the signal strength to the extreme? (I want to use TimeMachine to back up, and so I need the connection to be at n speeds.)
1 via WDS? if so, how to best do this?
2 via "extend a wireless network"? again, if so, how to best do this?
3 or is it better to buy a new airport express n (I gather that if both extreme and express are n, then I can use route #2 above very easily).
I would be very grateful for expert advice!
    Thanks in advance.

If you want to use a pure 802.11n network, you will need to connect the AirPort Express (AX) via Ethernet to the Time Capsule.
If you connect the AX wirelessly to the Time Capsule you will be forced to use the slower 802.11g.
If you use WDS that will further cut that bandwidth in half, so WDS is not recommended.

  • Airport Extreme Base station does not 'see' Airport w/Airtunes.  HELP!

I just purchased and installed an Airport Extreme Base startion (802.11n), and it does not 'see' my Airport Extreme with Airtunes. I have already tried re-setting the Airport + Airtunes to the factory settings, but since I installed the new Base station software, I no longer have the Airport Express Sett up assisstant?!?
    What am I doing wrong?

Your Mac won't be able to communicate with your Airport Express until you reconfigure your Airport Express to join the wireless network now being created by your new Airport Base Station.
The "Airport Setup Assistant" has been replaced by the "Airport Utility". You can find that new utility installed in your Mac's Applications->Utilities folder.
    What you should do now:
    1. do an factory default reset of your Airport Express.
    2. plug the Airport Express (temporarily) into power in the same room as your Base Station and your Mac.
    3. on your Mac, run the Airport Utility. It should "see" your Airport Express. Click on the Airport Express icon, click to continue (your Mac will switch wireless networks temporarily), click Continue, and follow the instructions for configuring the Airport Express so that it "joins" the existing wireless network created by your Base Station.

  • AirPort Extreme (n) connecting Internet, but not Printer or AirTunes

I have had a new AirPort Extreme (n) network for about 6 months, installed with the newer utility etc. Connected was ADSL Internet and a printer. Also a previous-gen AirPort Express/HiFi playing AirTunes, all on the single network, "hosted" by the Extreme. All working well.
Suddenly, the computer won't recognize the printer connected to the Extreme, yet the ADSL wireless internet still works! The Network also doesn't recognize the Express connecting AirTunes either!
Going into the utility, a scan for local AirPort Base Stations reveals NONE, not even the Extreme which is clearly transmitting my ADSL! How can this be???
The computer recognises the printer normally when connected via USB.

Are you sure that you are connected to your wireless network or are you perhaps connected to a neighbor's wireless network?

  • Streaming AirTunes to Airport Express via Extreme

I hate to beat a dead horse, but I've read thru multiple threads about this issue and done just about everything indicated with no luck. Used Airport Extreme for a wireless network with direct WAN connect to DSL and LAN to printer, wireless to the iMac and can connect fine with my PC notebook via the wireless network. I've tried to add Airport Express simply to stream AirTunes to the stereo system in the next room, but keep getting flashing amber on the Express. I've used soft, hard and factory resets, started over using Airport Utility to add the Express to the existing network, using the tech article cited in one of the streams. To avoid interference even tried setting it up plugged in next to the Airport Extreme. After factory reset the iMac can find the Express but when I try to add it to the existing network set up on the extreme it no longer finds it and the light starts flashing amber again. What am I missing here?

Aw, that's what I thought, thank you for confirming Rudegar. Back to the drawing board..

  • Airport extreme needs airtunes!

i think it's ridiculous that airport extreme does not have airtunes. this is a real sticking point with me. why should i upgrade to 802.11n when my airport express, which is a measly 802.11g will stream to my stereo. this means if i got the extreme i would still have to have the express right next to it. there potentially could be times when i'm trying to view something and i'm accidentally logged onto my slower express rather than my faster extreme. makes no sense. do an update mr. jobs and include airtunes, and 1 more usb plug at least.

COULDN'T,T AGREE WITH YOU MORE. THE EXPRESS IS SUCH A GREAT PIECE OF EQUIPMENT, AND TO HAVE PURCHASED STATE OF THE ART 'N' TECHNOLOGY JUST TO HAVE IT SLOWED DOWN TO 'G' WHEN STEAMING TO THE EXPRESS, MAKES NO SENSE TO ME EITHER. BUT ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL , I MUCH RATHER SET-UP AN APPLE NETWORK THAN THE OTHER BRANDS. THERE IS A TRADE OFF WITH WHAT YOU CAN CRAM  INTO 1 BOX AND STILL KEEP IT SIMPLE WITH EXQUISITE DESIGN.

  • Airport Extreme/Express AirTunes Config

Is it possible to run Airtunes from an Express into my hi-fi where the iTunes library is on an external HDD connected to the Extreme via USB or Ethernet without the Mac running the iTunes application. Does the Mac have to be switched on?

You must have a Mac or Windows computer running iTunes streaming the music to the AirPort Express (AX).
