Extreme amount of dead pixels on 24" 2006 iMac intel

Currently I am in possession of an iMac Core 2 Duo model A1200 (24"), which has severe display problems. There are dead pixels all over the screen, and even when in text mode the same problems occur, but distorting the text characters. This is OS-Independent, as it happens on every OS I have tried on it. In addition to that, sometimes CDs/DVDs don't show any display when they boot, however the dead pixels are still there. I've tried swapping the original RAM with new RAM of same make/speed/capacity, and the same glitches still happen. The RAM I swapped in is known to be good, as it has gone through 7 passes of Memtest86 with no errors. The only two things I could possibly narrow it down to are the Optical Drive or the HDD. The HDD is failing (according to the OSX install disc Disk Utility), but that should not affect the display. I checked the internal display cable and it shows no signs of a break. I have tried resetting the PRAM, which did nothing to fix it.
Example of display problems (shown while running memtest): http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/8060/imacfaildisplay.jpg
Any help would be appreciated.

+However, the apple page does not seem to accept my serial number for some reason+
I would assume that it doesn't accept it because you are past your warranty period. You can still take it to an AASP for an estimate and/or repair.
As for the Apple Hardware test, it does not necessarily pick up 100% of all hardware problems, so it is not the "absolute" test to rely on. Did you run the extended test?

Call Apple's online store's telesales agents: 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775. For Lion you'll get a redemptions code via e-mail and need to DL from the Mac Apple Store (requires SL 10.6.6+).

It's not just iTunes you need to update...
You need to upgrade to Leopard v10.5.8 at the very least in order to sync, restore, and backup an iPod touch.
See iPod touch system requirements here.
Leopard is available from Amazon here.

  • Dead pixel in 17 inch iMac.

I just got my iMac G5 yesterday, and it really is the greatest computer ever, but I noticed that there's a dead pixel on my otherwise perfect screen. It's an extremely small white dot (smaller than a grain of salt), which is hardly noticeable, but it still bothers me when I do see it. It's borderline nitpicking, but I did pay good money for this thing. Does my warranty cover this?

At the Apple Store here in Las Vegas, I was looking at discounted iMacs a while back. G4s. They had two for a decent discount. One was a demo model, the other one was a return with 1 dead pixel. Otherwise, it was brand new. They were willing to sell it for $200 less, but after two weeks no one was buying. I asked what happened, if the original purchaser got a new one, and the rep told me they replaced the whole computer for free (he was the rep that did the transaction). He also told me the guy was there for about two hours filling out paperwork. Also, the whole thing had transpired three weeks before I was there, and they still hadn't sold the computer, just because of that one dead pixel.
The dead pixel was a red one in the bottom-right corner, about two inches from the side and one inch from the bottom.
I guess the guy was lucky?

  • How will Logic Pro X run with a 2006 iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.16 GHz, 4GB ram)?

I have a 2006 iMac 2.16 GHz, 4GB ram, Intel Core 2 Duo. I am not planning on using plug-ins, I am a beginning artist and Logic Pro seems to have more than what I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes it will.. I would recommend you use the combination of  Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and LPv9.1.5 (or 9.1.8 if you have to..) with that particular hardware to get the best performance out of it... I would not recommend running any OS X version higher than 10.6.8 as each new version of OS X from then onwards.. placed a bigger performance hit on the hardware... and frankly, less stability with LP9.
As to how well it will run on that hardware.. will more depend on the sort of loads you place on it.. depending on the type and content of the music you wish to compose... It will run and you should be able to create reasonable sized projects.. but again, it all depends on the plugins used.. the number of them... the number of tracks and so on... so to give a more precise answer is difficult.

  • Dead Pixel Lines Across My iMac G5

Hello. PLEASE HELP I don't know how to attach pictures here to show you what this looks like, but its about 12 inches across of non conforming pixels. One near the top of the screen middle, then two more lower middle half about the same in length. They go away sometimes, after a reboot, or when I change users. But they are there no matter which background I have up. AND also now it seem like there are problems with the same image distortion crap when I am using Safari.
PLEASE help. Is there anything I can do? or is this a hardware issue for sure.
I know the computer is not that new, but any type of warranty for this stuff?
Let me know if you have seen this happen, AND if you'd like to see pics to diagnose, let me know I can send them along.
    THANKS!

  • Best way to transfer disk contents from dead Cube (G4) to new iMac (Intel)

Forgive me if this has been covered before - my search didn't find anything on this particular problem.
My (upgraded, but ancient) Cube finally bit the dust during a power surge/outage at the house. Actually, it was just the power brick that died, but I have ordered a new iMac to replace the Cube. My question is on the best way to transfer the data and info from my old hard drive to the new iMac when it arrives. I am thinking of buying a Firewire or USB enclosure for the Cube's disk (Western Digital 120 GB) and using it as an external drive at the new iMac. Since the Cube is effectively dead, I don't think I can use Migration Assistant, can I? And should this transfer be the first thing I do on the new iMac? I know that many of my apps won't run natively on the Intel iMac, but some will under emulation, so I want to save many of them (Cube was still a G4 PPC). I also want to be able to transfer my iTunes and iPhoto libraries, all my Office files, and other data without having to individually copy them all. Can someone suggest the best course of action?
    Thanks in advance,
    Joe Crabtree

    Hi Joe Crabtree;
Please remember that you are changing from PowerPC to Intel architecture so you will want to install all application on the new iMac and only migrate data files. Migrating applications from PowerPC to Intel is a known way to create problems with your new iMac.

  • 2006 iMAC intel core duo Kernel Panic + Black Curtain of Death

I've had this iMAC since 2006 w/o a problem. Lately been getting the "curtain of death" and screen to restart the computer. Saw similar discussions about these Kernel Panics. Brought the iMAC to Apple Store and tech thought it was a bad logic board and recommended not to fix it ($800+). I have trouble, as did the tech getting it to boot. Today I got it to boot and before it crashed again, I managed to run the Hardware Test from the original OS disc 1. This showed no problem in both tests. Did get the panic log (see below) can anyone make heads or tails of this? Thanks

If you attempt to boot from an external HD that is set up as a bootable clone and it fails to boot that almost certainly points to the Mac having a hardware. The bootable clone would have had to be setup prior to the failure. Many people (myself included) keep redundant backups, I would recommend doing the same when you have either repaired or replaced the current machine. Macworld runs articles where users describe their own backup strategies, I'd recommend reading them and then deciding which works best for your needs.

  • Dead pixels on late 2012 27-inch iMac

i've been using the default configured starry Galaxy desktop wallpaper since i bought my iMac 27-inch late 2012 and today i noticed a small light spot near one of the small stars on the left side of my screen, it is mostly noticeable standing up and looking down at it when windows are open on that side, i.e. safari, finder windows, and on lighter solid-color backgrounds. it looks like dead pixels as opposed to dirt to me, but i dunno.

If you have had this new iMac for longer than 14 days, you can no longer return it for a replacement.
You might be able to get a new, replacement LCD panel installed under AppleCare, if this bothers you or you are just going to have to live with it.
There is a certain amount of dead pixels that determines if the LCD is good or defective.
Every LCD panel is prone to dead pixels. The pixel can be stuck "on" (white) or stuck "off" (black).
If this is the only pixel that you found that is dead, then it maybe considered OK and not defective.
If you had the LCD replaced, there is no guarantee you wouldn't get a replacement LCD with another or a few stuck pixels.
In the near future or before your free year of AppleCare expires, I would strongly consider budgeting, purchasing and registering with Apple for the 3-year extended AppleCare warranty plan. You will need it.

  • Help! 2006 imac need Mountain Lion to run Photoshop elements

Hi, getting very frustrated : (
Have a 2006 Imac Intel; upgraded to snow leopard last year; now wanted to run Photoshop elements. Imac says NO. We needed Mountain Lion- ordered this online, computer says NO. Need more memory. So have bought and installed new memory (2gb + 1gb). Computer still says no, wont download Mountain Lion.
I just want to use elements!!
Any help appreciated, I'm not that computer savvy
    Thanks : D

The new version PSE will run on OS X 10.7 Lion.
    PSE 12 runs on 10.7- 10.9
Here are the system requirements for OS X 10.7 Lion.
To use Lion, make sure your computer has the following:
An Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later to install via the Mac App Store (v10.6.8 recommended); you can install without Mac OS X v10.6 by using an OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive, available on the Apple Online Store
7 GB of available disk space
    2 GB of RAM
To find out info about your system
Click on the Apple symbol in the upper left of the OS X main menu bar. A drop down menu appears. Click About this Mac. A smaller popup window appears. This gives you basic info like what version of OS X your iMac is running, the speed of your iMac's CPU and how much RAM is installed.
Click on the button that says More Info. A larger window appears giving you a complete overview of your iMac's hardware specs.
Highlight all of this info and copy/paste all of this into another reply to this post, editing out your iMac's serial number before actually posting the reply. This will tell us everything about your iMac so we may begin to help with your iMac issues.
If your 2006 iMac can run Lion then you can purchase a Lion install code here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
Before installing a major systems upgrade, it would be prudent to have a viable backup of your current system and important data in case something should go wrong with the installation.
    Good Luck!

  • 19 dead pixels in Isight camera of new 27' imac i7

Hi there, I received my new Imac 27" i7 yesterday. I was very happy at first as I could not find any dead pixels however when I used my Isight camera I was very upset. I found a total of 19 dead + stuck pixels in the isight camera making it really unusable, I was shocked with this. How is it possible for there to be so many? Has anyone else checked their isight cameras? If you put a black cloth over it or if you are wearing a black top you will be able to see them much better. This is my first post so I'm sorry if I am taking over someone's thread.
I'm sorry I have posted the same post in several different topics but I could not work out how to post a question at first.
Apple said they are sending me a replacement but I am scared that it will have other problems now. But how can 19 pixels be possible is what baffles me?

I'm really upset guys, I got my replacement and I waited forever for it. Now it is even worse:
    1. Isight has 16 dead/stuck pixels in it
    2. Screen has several dead pixels
    3. I have had a few issues with screen flickering/blackout
    4. The computer is extremely slow compared to the first one even after the software update and the same things done to it, in particular Imovie is pretty much impossible to use now with the amount of lag.
    5. Probably the worst as it is a physical defect: There is a tiny crack within the black glass border that I noticed straight away although it is small + The glass is not perfectly aligned so the silver chin sticks out on the left side.
Its going back, if next one is bad then I'm getting a refund for the time being. Oh and my first one was a week 46 and the replacement is a week 48 which was supposed to have resolved the issues...don't think so

  • Could some one help me with dead pixel on my screen?

I bought my Thinkpad X61 only a few days back. I opened it and found that there is one dead pixel in the middle of the monitor. Is there any possibilty that Lenovo would fix this? I know that I have to pay 15% of the purchage amount in order to return this peice. I would be really happy to return it without any costs. I talked to the service people. This is the worst service ever I had. No one is replying. One girl told me that the dead pixel goes away in a few days and It would be okey. It looks like if you order a laptop online, they send you laptop with defective pixels.

  • Dead pixel in my iPad

I was grievously disappointed to discover a dead pixel near the center of the screen in my iPad yesterday just before leaving to the U.S. from Japan.
Almost everything I have ever gotten from Apple has had a defect like this and I've had to fight fight fight to get it fixed each time.
But... I decided to see if I could get it replaced while here in the U.S.
So I made an appointment at the Genius Bar at the Apple Store at the Chestnut Hill Mall here in Boston and brought the iPad over at 2 pm.
The guy at the Bar was nice, saw the broken pixel and immediately said he'd swap it for a new one for me! So I was very pleasantly surprised and glad about that.
Then the new swapped one ALSO had a broken pixel - almost in the exact same area!!!
So he sort of sighed, but did a 2nd swap out for a 3rd iPad. This time we looked and looked (while impatient people were backed up to get help) and couldn't find a single broken pixel.
So fortunately this problem was resolved very nicely by Apple and I'm good to go. Using a 2 GB AT&T contract with an AT&T SIM card while I'm in the U.S.
I'm surprised that two iPads in a row had a broken pixel, and almost in the same area. But I was really pleased at the friendly, reassuring service I got at the Genius Bar.

    Yes, extraordinary bad luck.
While I haven't had problems with my desktop Macs (iMacs) or my iPhone 3G, every other mobile/portable device I ever bought from Apple, going back 20 years, has had something go wrong with it, usually from the start, often multiple times. Examples:
    - Duo: the screen had multiple broken pixels and needed to be replaced from the start.
    - iBook: the wireless card (then an option) was set improperly and wasn't working. Needed to be sent back for repair.
    - PowerBook G4: broken pixels needing replacement from the start, keyboard problems requiring top case and kb replacement. Also, that model had a really poorly designed cover that never closed properly (the famous wiggling cover problem.)
    - MacBook Pro: Failure 2 times in 3 years of my trackpad requiring replacement; broken pixels requiring replacement; hard disk failure requiring replacement. Two replacements of mother board! The last one 2 months after my AppleCare warranty ran out, but Apple fixed it anyway. Keyboard needing replacement. I'm using it right now on my trip to the U.S. and it's still working after almost 4 years, but it definitely has taken advantage of the AppleCare warranty multiple times. And I'm not a rough user - I almost never take it off my desk, except on travel.
    - iPod nano: Don't even get me started on that one. The screen was tilted (big discussion thread here) - they sent me 3 replacements, one worse than the other. I finally had to go to the Japan consumer affairs agency to force Apple to give me a refund. Which they finally did, with an apology and a gift certificate to use at the online store.
    - iPad: broken pixel needing replacement, followed by a 2nd iPad with another broken pixel needing immediate replacement.
This is just what I can remember off the top of my head.
Unless I am unusually unlucky, my own sampling over the years tells me that while Apple support is great and they take care of the problems after the fact, they definitely have quality issues coming out of the factory to begin with.
I always have to "mentally prepare myself" before buying an Apple product because I know I am very likely going to have to invest a certain amount of time in dealing with Apple support and getting things fixed afterwards. Eventually it turns out ok each time, but just knowing I will have to deal with it is stressful.

  • What is the minimum number of dead pixels?

Hi. I recently purchased an Apple LED Cinema Display. It's very beautiful but i have found one dead pixel. The reseller refuses to change or fix it because they can offer assistance only for more than 4 dead pixels. I called Apple and they said me that "one pixel is accetable". In my opinion, aboslutely NO!
Does anyone had his LED display changed with only one pixel dead or stuck?
What is the minimum amount of defective pixels to ask for assistance? Some say 4, other 7...
    Thanks

Apple replaced it. When I booked the appointment with my local Genius as requested a phone call prior to the appointment. During the phone call the Genius was very professional and courteous, and told me that he would be replacing it as an exception and that strictly speaking the 24" display could have up to 9 dead pixels before they would consider it a defect. Never mind this though as they did replace it without any hassle.

  • Dead pixels on 2014 refreshed 15" Retina MacBook Pros

I am a long time Apple user and I own a few Apple products including a White MacBook. Recently, I ordered a top of the line refreshed retina MacBook Pro through the education store and it appeared to have a few dead pixels. Sure the defect was very minor. Not noticeable for most people. But I am extremely sensitive to such anomalies. When I drop $3.5K+ on the absolute maximum configuration (15" rMBP, 2.8GHz, 1TB disk) that Apple has to offer on these notebooks, I expect ZERO defects. Anyway, I returned the rMBP to Apple and ordered a new one. It too had a few dead pixels. I returned that too. I was very frustrated. I thought about this for a while and suspect that it's because I bought the notebooks at a discounted rate from the Apple Education store that they are selling these "A" grade screens rather than the A+ grade ones. I have ordered a third notebook not from the education store. I'll see what quality display I get with it.
FYI, the first notebook had a LG display while the second one had a samsung. Both had very similar pixel anomalies. I would gladly pay full retail if I get a flawless screen as I'll be spending over 14 hours staring at it. For someone whose going to drop $3.5K on a notebook, $300 don't matter much.
